19 Mar 2025 The husband wanted BBQ, so I checked Yelp. Zeke's came in at a review average of between 4 and 5 stars. The counter person was very welcoming. She was taking care of a to-go customer picking up their order, taking an order on the phone and greeting us. Very impressive. She was the only person other than the kitchen staff. She's taking orders, serving the folks staying to eat (us) and then bussing the tables. Whew! We both ordered the brisket special: brisket and two sides. I had the green beans and potato salad; the husband Mac and cheese and creamed corn. The sides are excellent. The brisket while good, was a little dry. But hey, we were there about 45 minutes before they close at 8pm. I used the bbq sauce on my brisket. I usually don't bother with sauce, but since the meat was a tad dry, I did. The sauce is tangy sweet and delicious. We saw one customer taking a couple of pints of the sauce to go. He must like it. The plates also come with two slices of white bread, the small cup of sauce and a condiment cup of pickles and peppered onions. It was the perfect amount of food for $10.99. There were other specials available with pork or sausage. This was a pretty good first visit and we would go back. It's about two blocks past the back of St. Mary''s University on Culebra. Continuing on my trek to try different BBQ that our city offers, I visited Zeke's. It is not much to look at on the outside, but since I was taking my order to go exterior appearance wasn't too much of a concern. I couldn't get an idea on how big the restaurant was as I only occupied the counter area and the seating near it. I walked up to the counter to place my order. The friendly lady running the register sensed that I had not visited before, and offered a couple of samples of brisket, mac & cheese, and creamed corn. I ended up ordering the 3 meat plate and half a sausage link. My two sides were beans and creamed corn. My 3 meats were brisket, turkey, and pork ribs. I was pleasantly surprised by the great smoke flavor in each of the meats. However, it wasn't as pronounced in the brisket. Their bbq sauce was really good although the meat tasted just as good without it. I really enjoyed the creamed corn. Only disappointment was the beans as they did not have much flavor. Our first time here and it was so so. The bbq itself was more reminiscent of North Carolina bbq. The sauce sweet with a vinegar after kick. The mac and cheese was minimal, Church's chicken has better but similar. The potato salad tasted store bought but mix with more mayo in-house. The pinto beans had the strangest taste to them as if the taste of the metal from the pot mixed with it not being wash correctly giving it an oily metal taste. Definitely not an experience worth repeating. The warning should have been the George Strait playing when you walked in. Slightly-Less-Than-Average BBQ joint. I had the 2 meat plate with brisket and turkey. The brisket had a good flavor, but was dry (and I asked for moist/fatty brisket). The turkey was gloriously average. The mac and cheese was pretty good, but the spanish rice was a bit of a let down. To top it all off - the ice machine was broken and they were out of iced tea! I wanted to try a new barbecue restaurant and saw Zeke's wasn't far from me, had a good rating and great health score so I figured I couldn't go wrong. When I walked in, the woman behind the counter asked if I had been there before, showed me the menu and took my order. I ordered the sampler and watched her go into the kitchen. I thought she might start helping to prepare the food, it seems like this might be a mom and pop business but she did not start preparing food, she came out with samples of creamed corn, green beans, beans, barbecue sauce and brisket. I paid and the man in the kitchen asked how I liked the brisket, I gave him a thumbs up and told him I preferred the moist cut over the lean. When my order was ready, I wasn't expecting it to be in two separate bags but it was. The sampler is a lot of food for a more than reasonable price. The sides: The beans are very good, the rice doesn't look like much but is really good and the green beans are absolutely great. I like creamed corn a lot but I'm often disappointed when I order it but that's not the case here, considering how creamy it is, I'm guessing it's homemade and I can tell it's definitely not the canned stuff. The mac and cheese is not for me, I'm really picky about mac and cheese and usually don't order it out and wouldn't have to have this again. I like coleslaw a lot and it's another side that usually disappoints me but it's really good here, it's like an upgraded fast food coleslaw it's hard for me to tell if it's homemade but I know that I haven't had coleslaw like that anywhere else. The potato salad is also good and seems homemade but it's another one of those sides where it's hard to tell. The meats: The turkey is great, I don't normally order turkey from a barbecue restaurant because it's usually dry, that's not the case here even though it's turkey breast. The chicken is really good, it's another thing I don't normally order because it's tends to be be dry but it is not here and it has the most smoky flavor of all the meats. The pork ribs are really good and so is the brisket. The sausage is so good, I'm presuming it's homemade since I have never had any sausage like it. I don't usually leave such lengthy reviews but Zeke's exceeded my expectations and there is so much food on the sampler. I would support this business again and again. read more

We read some good reviews about this place and decided to give it a try - lucked out and found a hidden gem! We had the beef ribs, pork ribs, moist brisket, turkey and sausage. All were really good but the moist brisket was the star - not too fatty, fell-apart tender and very flavorful! So good we had to order another 1/2 lb to have right there and then. Sides were delicious as well - especially liked the green beans, Mac & cheese, pinto beans and cream corn. Zeke was very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. I recently visited Zeke's when I happened to be in San Antonio for my son's AF graduation. We had a party of 6 and we decided to order the family tray which included a pound of all their meats and 4 large sides. All I can say that everyone was very happy. Sundays are for new Bbq spots. So I stopped into this little west side gem! We were the only ones here at the time so we got excellent service and food was out quick. They had football on so that was nice and I loved that they have tea, lemonade, koolaid all free refills! The food was pretty tasty. I enjoyed the ribs the most they were big but cut differently. They gave us bread so I made a brisket sandwich, (we got mixed brisket) I poured bbq sauce on it and it was A1. The Mac and potato salad were okay not my favorite but I did still eat it all lol. Unlike most places lately where the to-go packaging now seems to swallow your meal be before you've even had a bite because of "shrinkflation," where portions are getting smaller due to inflation, Zeke's served enough for two of us. It's clean, family-owned, and reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and attentive. In fact, it was my first time, and Lucy was on it. She gave me samples. She said, "I want you to leave with what you already know you love instead of getting home and not liking it." Now, while the food it is not quite the BBQ level of 2M's, it's definitely a delicious experience and definitely worth trying. It's a wonderful little find on Culebra Road within a short distance of Barrio Barrista and La Sorrentina Italian Restaurant, which are other must try westside gems.
