Came on a Friday night. Got there when they opened at 5pm, along with many others. Seating is limited but comfortable. The food was delicious. The reason for the low review is the attitude of the servers at the bar. I followed this wine bar on Instagram and expected a friendly group. When I went up to the bar to ask about wine, I started with my usual greeting "Hi, how are you tonight?" I got a curt reply: "Fine. What can I get you?" Typically people will respond "How are you?" in reply. I felt dismissed as a customer. When I then asked for a Cab, I was given two choices to try--very similar to each other, without asking me what I liked in a wine. It felt as he made up his mind about me on the surface and thought I wasn't worth talking to. We spent nearly $200 on dinner and wine so I believe I should have been given more respect as a customer. I was here when they first opened about 6 years ago and the service was great. I am really saddened that they have developed an attitude that they are too good for some customers. read more

If I could pick 0 stars I would. Awful. I went out on Valentine's Day with my two friends. They denied us a table and said because my friend was drunk. We hadn't drank a single glass of wine yet. Absolutely awful. I wish I could remember the bartenders name. We drove out of our way for this place to get treated with disrespect. He said to my friend "I'm a bartender, I know". It's my neighborhood wine bar, and I've been coming here regularly for about 18 months. I can drink wines here that I never see in wine stores from regions I didn't know grew wine grapes. The way the wine experts here work is to ask what you'e in the mood for and then proceed from there, and tonight I ended up with a Gamay (the grape you associate with Beaujolais) from Chile that was exactly the light but serious red wine I had been looking for. I've never had a wine I didn't like here, although by the nature of the business you'll be drinking something that you like better than the wines they offered you previously, and I've made some pretty outrageous requests. What's particularly good about Augustine is that the kitchen is better than it has any right to be. Miguel, the chef, is a genius. Of course the tater tots everyone mentions, but a terrific salmon tartare, a wonderful tomato and peach salad in season, and even some vegan dishes. This place is a sommeliers wet dream. Best wine by the glass selection I have seen anywhere, simply because they have all the classics, some weird stuff, and a ton of really old vintages available. I've seen bigger by the glass lists that were very good but can't compete with the number of rare wines and older vintages that Augustine's carries. Plus the staff is excellent. The only reason I took a star is that this place is amazing and beautiful but the music didn't go with the ambience and atmosphere. Not that I wouldn't suggest or go again, quiet the opposite , however if I could hear something more connecting to the atmosphere, it will feel great. The food was pretty good but nothing I need to go back for. My biggest gripe was with the bartender. Pretty rude... after pouring a small taste of two cabernets (that I did not ask for) and me telling him that neither one was working for me, he sort of snarled "Well, what would you like?? Something with more fruit?? Or bolder??" Not unreasonable questions, actually, but said in a tone that should not be used on a customer. Dude, I didn't ask for the tastes and I'm more than OK with just ordering from the wine list... but if you put two sips in front of me and I don't like either one, I may as well tell you that, right? I'm not an oenophile (in fact, I think that's sick and I'm glad they get beaten in prison) and maybe there is some protocol memo I missed regarding ordering wine in a wine bar. But I've been in hundreds of bars (I'm trying not to sound proud of that) and have only met a handful of bartenders or servers that have talked to me like that. What a little gem! Sort of a nondescript wine bar along Ventura Blvd., but the wine selection makes up for the location. The real high point of this spot is that they sell some really rare and old wines by the glass. I don't know where they get them, but definitely focus your attention on these (they are listed on a black board in the bar). I tried several different wines I had never had, and then spent hours on the internet looking for them to buy more, but to no avail. A wonderful departure from the usual wine selection at most wine bars! And the prices were very reasonable considering how rare these wines are! I just had a selection of charcuterie and and cheeses with the wine, but they have a reasonable looking menu too. Augustine Wine Bar was like an answered prayer :) I loved the place that I went two straight nights. Great wine selection, bartender was very accommodating, knowleadgeable and helpful. When i ordered at the bar and asked for suggestion he patiently let me taste not just 3 but like 4-5 selection until I settled for the one that was perfect for my wine craving those two nights. Another thing that I love was the white cheddar and black truffle salami (i'm a sucker for truffles) with dill pickles! It was my 1st time trying truffle salami and I absolutely loved it! I love this place! My partner and I were on the lookout for a wine bar after a phenomenal show and he found this great spot. It's on the corner of Ventura and Sunnyslope in Sherman Oaks. Walk in and you'll find a very relaxed wine bar the likes of which are difficult to find in Los Angeles. I lived in Santa Barbara for five years and Augustine is very similar to the type of wine bar you'll find there: casual, unpretentious, and approachable. (If you ever find yourself in Santa Barbara, Les Marchands is just like Augustine.) It's dimly lit, with great music and comfortable seating. Also, the bathroom is one of the cleanest and most pleasant smelling restrooms I've seen in a bar! We took a seat at the bar and were immediately served glasses of water and offered menus. We ordered a charcuterie plate with the Brillat Savarin, manchego, and wild boar salami. It was served with jam, a slightly spicy mustard, pickled peppers, black currants, cashews, and butter. While eating the server offered to get us more bread, too. Everything was excellent quality for $18. We also enjoyed our drinks very much. Both times I asked for the waiter to recommend something and he was able to find what I was seeking: a phenomenal Chenin Blanc from Santa Barbara and a crisp Pinot Blanc from the Santa Maria Valley. My partner ordered the Lambrusco and then a Syrah, which he thoroughly enjoyed as well. All in all, I enjoyed my experience here. Four drinks and a plate for $75 is pretty reasonable, and I'm thrilled to have a spot near my house that reminds me of a place I miss dearly :) read more

I heard about this spot from wine professionals who own and dabble in the art of wine. One owns a vineyard and one comes from a wine family, both in different regions of California. As they said, this is the best kept secret in wine bars and tastings in Los Angeles and is beyond stellar. I'm amazed and buzzed quickly by the Sanford & Benedict 1980 Pinot and can't say enough. Great date atmosphere! Dim lighting makes for a very romantic setting. They have an impressive wine list and some rare vintage wines as well if you're looking for something a bit fancier. Seating is limited so I'd recommend getting here early in the evening before it gets too busy so that you can hold down a table. I don't get it. All of these 4 and 5 star reviews. I readily admit to being a wine snob (or wine geek, if you prefer) so this review is colored by the fact that I have been collecting wine for close to 20 years and have enough knowledge to be dangerous. First visit was on 3/6. Interesting list of very old vintage wines on the chalkboard. But, is anyone going to spend $40 - $50 on a glass of wine because it is old and french? Unless you have been collecting bordeaux for 30 years and know every vintage, one would have no way of knowing the quality of the wines listed. The entry level list of wine was fine. Lots of different varietals, all at reasonable prices. So, lots of basic and average quality recent releases at fair prices and an interesting selection of older wines on the chalkboard, but absolutely nothing in the middle. No higher quality options of any kind were available. No wines by the bottle were available. I don't get that at all. You can't bring wine. I don't get that either. I prefer Italian wines. The entry level Italian wines, a Sangiovese from Tuscany, and a Nebbiolo from Piemonte, were barely drinkable. There was nothing on the chalkboard from Italy so after tasting the first 2 Italian wines (oh, there might have been a Barbera on the list, but I don't prefer that), I was out of options. We ordered the cheese and salumi tray. It was excellent. Great choices. We also had the kale salad and beef cheeks sandwich. The kale salad was inedible. So salty, we returned it twice. The sandwich was totally over sauced and we could not finish it. The tater tots were crispy and hot, but ordinary. So, why was the wine bar crowded? Big list of craft beers. A lot of 30 somethings looking for a cool space to hang out and have a nice glass of wine or craft beer. Nice decor. Interesting crowd. That part of it worked. And, the bar had only been open for 15 days. But, if you are looking for a serious glass of wine other than ancient french bordeaux, this is not the place. No higher quality chateauneuf-du-pape, no brunello, no barolo, no burgundy, no high end spanish wines, nothing other than entry level wines. So for me, this is not the sophisticated wine bar for the valley that I was hoping for. The mid-palette, high quality bottles of wine that sell retail in the range of $30 - $60, was completely missing. Further, if you wanted to splurge, other than a wing and a prayer from the chalkboard, there were no choices. Perhaps, the demographics of the valley don't support that. I'm not sure. A great addition to the Valley's burgeoning culinary scene, Augustine is located in a non-descript area of Ventura Blvd, directly adjacent to a used car lot. There is no evident sign, and it's very easy to miss - probably exactly what the proprietors have in mind. This is not meant to be a 'scene,' and it's definitely atypical for the Valley. This is a quality venue, and it is obvious the the owners took particular care in everything from location to decor (piano from 1912, legitimate vintage wine bottles, well-heeled furniture). The wine selection is out of this world - selections ranging from the 50's and 60's all the way through the classics of the 80's and 90's, as well as modern vintages. It's quiet, it's dark, and it's the perfect place to have a romantic drink or mature conversation over good wine; the bartender/somm's are knowledgeable and ready to help, so come prepared with questions - or just an insatiable curiosity and thirst. You will be taken care of. If I have one compliant, and albeit it's minor, the chairs accompanying the tables in the front seating area are too low and make the patron that is sitting in them feel like a child in comparison to their compadres. A very pleasant bar for a casual night out. Seating/ordering is a bit inconvenient. The best situation is to find a seat at the bar and go from there. Regardless of where you sit you have to place all order at the bar (no waiters). The staff was knowledgeable and helpful with picking wines - we tried a bunch before deciding what to move forward with. The food was good as well and complemented what you're drinking. Will definitely go back for another casual night out. It is a bit hard to get seating but once you do you're golden and can enjoy - I would actually encourage bar seating here. read more

We went here on a Friday night with some friends. The downside we experienced immediately was that there was very few areas for a group of four to sit. They have several booths that hold only 2 people. We ended up outside on the patio and after running into friends, attempted to have 6 of us sit and chat (it was a tight squeeze). Wine - huge selection with the cheapest being $11. They will let you try several wines before deciding. We had two rose wines. Food - small portions. We had two cheese plates with a total of 4 cheeses and 2 meats. All good, but small. We also had the olives, nuts, carrots and tater tots. Valet parking, nice staff and great ambiance. read more

The wine bar that you have always wished for. The servers behind the bar are experts. You can geek out with them or not. You can also tell them what you are in the mood for and they'll make a recommendation and give you a taste and let you decide. I have had wines from the list, but my fav is the chalkboard specials. If you like wine, you'll find something on there you may not ever get a chance to taste again. It adds up pretty quickly. My advice is to start with something from the board and then return to the list. I have seen people complain that they have to go to the counter to order everything. It is the most efficient way to hear about and taste what you are getting so it was no big for me. They bring the food to your table. Oh yeah, the food. Again have them pair your cheese and charcuterie with what you just ordered. The other food won't blow your mind, but you get enough choices and flavors that something will be good to pair with. They use seasonal ingredients and have become more thoughtful about pairing. I had a beet salad that was really good along with their selected cheese and charcuterie. As a former resident of Sherman Oaks, I was really excited to hear about this place and finally come here. It was great except they don't take reservations so in lamens terms that's code for maybe you will get a seat or maybe you won't. So on Saturday, that's a hard no. We resolved to sitting in a tiny table outside with a heater because a couple celebrities were taking up half of the front of house. Not that I have issues with celebrities, but they say "order at the bar"..: and they definitely got table service, waited on hand and foot. As far as seating, they have tiny tables to the left only for two. One sad table in the rear back of the bar for 2-3 and a couple tables outside. I loved the cheese and charcuterie plate my group shared, but if you're paying 40$ for cheese and meat plus another 140 on wine in one sitting you should get table service despite not being a celebrity. The order line gets backed up, immensely. They have more space for tables, but don't utilize it. This could be for fire code, but who knows. I would go back, maybe. But unfortunately feel like we were jipped out of the ultimate experience we could have been provided. read more

In twenty years of being legal age to drink, I've never left an establishment without leaving a tip. Tonight was the day. My interactions from the beginning were not the best first impression, from the indifferent response from the person behind the bar to the interaction with Karrine. Her lack of knowledge of wine to her asking for my 'credit' card to swipe( she proceeded to not following the same requirement to any other patrons after me, mostly white individuals), and her under-pouring the glass of wine I ordered- while she, and the two other bartenders pouring the normal 6-9 ounce per glass, to other patrons. Finally, last call came, and they could not be in any more of a hurry to shut down and get home. I walked to the bar, where I engaged the male bartender(didn't get his name) I asked if they had a Borolo in stock, to which with such indifference in response- a very curt and dismissive [NO]. I asked for the check, and to my surprise, the under-poured glasses(s) of wine came out to $19.00 each.- oh.. Before I forget, they are more concerned with bigger parties (more money in tips) than quality. ENJOY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Maybe if you have a lighter skin tone, the service will be superb. read more
