So Aurora Avenue is a thing. Tempted by streetwalkers, massage parlors, and Home Depot, you're in a vestige of old Seattle. But wedged amidst all the "hard wood," is this cute-as-kittens donut shop. A spot of wholesomeness in a track of desperate orphans and addicts. You walk in, and it's, what's the word, homey. The menu is in that 1980s rounded font, there are chips in the tiles, you get the picture. Donuts are actually good, but even if they're not from time to time, the idea of this place is too powerful to ignore. Nestled in next to a number of other businesses, you will find THE place to feed your sweet craving for that delicious little (or big) treat...the donut! Anything from the traditional Old Fashioned, to Powdered, to Glazed, to Jelly or Cream or Pudding Filled you can get. If you've read my other donut shop reviews, you know that I love all things fritters...jelly...and sprinkles! I get my fix here at Aurora and fill that craving every time I'm there. A new one I had this last time was the Boston Cream donut! I'm a huge fan of B.C Pie, so I was intrigued with this Vanilla Pudding and Chocolate Icing charm. It was delicious! The other things that my wife and I love about Aurora is that 1.) their donuts aren't overly sweet, so you don't get the "lump in your stomach gut ache" after eating a couple; and 2.) they don't go stale quickly, so you can enjoy your dozen over the course of a few days. That's of course if you can contain yourself that long! Ha! They also have coffee drinks and an ice cream parlor in house. This review is a long time coming. Aurora Donuts, you are the bomb. 3 months ago, my boss decided she wanted 300 pink donuts in 5 hours for a party at work to celebrate a project launch. The only problem? No donut shop near my office with a pink donut. Off in the car I went to buy any kind of pink looking donuts possible as fast as possible after I spent an hour calling many places who all said they couldn't deliver on the short notice and didn't have any for me to pick up either. I went down 99, remembering passing Aurora Donuts. I went in with my crazy request. The sweet gal and man working were surprised but up for the challenge. They had some sprinkles on hand that qualified, but the shop keeper offered to frost all of the 100 plain cake donuts he had pink for me if I could wait. I said I was happy to do that. After about 15 minutes, they had all 100 donuts frosted, boxed or bagged (I took the last box they had that day). The shop keeper, feeling sympathy for me, asked if my boss was out to test me or something. I said no, this is how she rolls. I went to pay and ordered a soda since I was very thirsty as I had been to a grocery store just before this and cleaned them out of what they had too. The owner told me the soda was on the house for my trouble - wow!!! - and then he asked the gal working to help me carry all the pastries out to my car which she was happy to do. WOW! After I had to go to Krispy Kreme for the rest and the party began, I only ate one of Aurora's donuts, and it was good. Not the best donut I've ever had, but it was tasty. And I don't think I've ever had such service from a bakery/small business of any kind like here. I also want to note that while I was standing around waiting for the avalanche of donuts to be frosted, there were some patrons hanging out in the shop. They were clearly hanging out for a couple hours because they felt comfortable there and knew they wouldn't be told to leave. They were elderly or handicapped, and I could tell they were regulars. This donut/ice cream place was a second home to them, a reprieve from the world. How refreshing and wonderful that the people who own Aurora Donuts are the kind of people that they are. I would say this place is middle of the road. It's kinda cheap, but you could get cheaper and the same quality at a grocery store, if not better quality control at the grocery store. And if you want quality Krispy Creme is right down the road. The service was neither not exactly rude, but certainly not friendly in any way. And the creme filled doughnut was not filled right. I'm all about supporting the small business. Like most everyone says, sure there's a Krispy Kreme just down the road, but trust me you will love these donuts. One downside is the location, Shoreline apparently used to be nice... Until of course the hookers moved in and it all went to hell. I work out of my car alot and have meetings all over the city, of course forcing me to spend a considerable amount of time around the Shoreline, and specifically good ol hooker road, side of Aurora Ave. Location aside, this is a great little shop. Obviously it used to be a Dunkin Donuts shop, but now it's become something of a brand, with a Baskin Robins connected to it of course, then again I come here for the donuts. What sets this place apart from the greasy (Krispy Kreme) and the frou frou (Frost) is the donuts are classic and good. The kind you'd find at an old school Dunkin. These donuts don't aspire to be slathered in greasy frosting nor do they have delusions of grandeur to be a glazed with chocolate milked from the teet of a swiss cow. Just good ol donuts for a good ol price. A few highlights! The strawberry filled sugar dusted donut is my favorite jelly donut. The filling is really flavorful but not overpoweringly sweet. Their classic maple bar is delicious, moist, and has the perfect amount of frosting, and the manager's special is divine, a chocolate cake donut dusted with powdered sugar. Also, they have a pretty good maple/bacon bar... Absolute truth I tell ya. The service is always stellar, the guy who run it really lives behid the "service with a smile" credo. A great one stop shop for a donut and a coffee. I don't make it out here as often as I'd like... Cute retro doughnut shop located right off of Aurora (hence the name). After trying a few of the doughnuts, you need to try their cake doughnuts! The yeasted doughnuts are good but nothing out of the ordinary. But boy are the cake doughnuts and old fashioned doughnuts are fantastic!
