    Ballard Lox Bagel

    - [ 5/5 ] Atmosphere Bright interior, small number of seating (similar to their Fremont location). Single occupant bathroom. No line at all, which definitely contrasts from the Fremont location. - [ 3/5 ] Service Alright. The lady at the cashier didn't acknowledge us Or give us any welcoming, just kind of stood there waiting for us to order. The guy making our bagel was nice and enthusiastic though! - [ 4/5 ] Food We got the Ballard lox on a salt bagel - warning, it's pretty salty! (But I love salty bagels). My partner got his with spicy scallion schmear. Good portions. Bagel on the harder/chewier side. We paid around $35 for two bagels + tip. - [ 5/5 ] Location/Parking Great, validated 2 hour parking right by the shop. Located near University Village.

    Ballard lox on sesame

Parking is no problem (next door garage permits 2 hours with validation); service is excellent (super friendly and efficient); coffee is very good. Bagels... tbd. We came in at 8-ish, around opening time, and despite the sign out front that proclaims "HOT BAGELS," the bagels did not seem all that fresh? The everything bagel was warm-ish, but the sesame was cold and the seeds were remarkably untoasted (despite the browning on the outside "skin" of the bagel itself). Filings were tasty on the Ballard lox and the OG (although I am not a huge fan of the steamed egg brick - I wish it was a fried egg, but that's a personal preference). My real beef is with the bagels themselves. They're just not the equal of some of the competitors in the immediate area - a bit stodgy, lacking in bounce/chew... they're not Hey Bagel. However: they do offer bagel sammies, which HB does not! So it's really a matter of what you're in the mood for. I will be back to give BB another shot - who knows, this might just have been an early-days-at-a-new-location experience?

My bagel was soft on the outside and chewy on the outside and very fresh. The scallion cream cheese was yummy.

Kind of reminded me of pickles but I think a lot of people who don't like pickles might prefer this! Service was so nice, asked if I had been before and it was my first time so I received a 10% discount. That being said it is on the pricier side, a regular chicken sandwich is ~$16 and the sliders were ~$11. Aside from the sauce in the sandwich, other sauces are 99 cents each, not sure about the amount you receive. There weren't any combos, as far as I'm aware, so a side of fries is also extra. The restaurant is combined w a drinks spot, it's pretty cozy inside and the decorations were very nice.

There were long hairs - MULTIPLE long hairs - literally encrusted into the breading that the chicken was fried with. I almost vomited after it got stuck in my throat (which is how I found it - I admittedly don't usually inspect my food super closely, but I also think I'm in the majority there.) After extracting the revolting piece of long hair attached to the chicken out of my esophagus, I inspected more closely and found more stuck in the breading. I couldn't eat the food without taking all of the crust off, which would defeat the purpose of fried chicken. I was also so nauseated afterwards that I couldn't eat anything, anyway, especially from the place that served me that. Yes, I did notice that the workers didn't wear hair nets. Maybe that's on me? But what was most upsetting is that I emailed them about the incident and NEVER heard a whisper back, let alone a suggestion of compensation for my inedible order,

They have so much outdoor seating, on both sides of the cafe, which I really like. Way more than downtown. Food came out super quick too. My go to order has always been the Mr Breakfast plate, it's super hearty and full of great breakfast foods. However, the price has increased exponentially and quality has definitely gone down. I used to pay around $15 for this plate and it included bacon and now it's $17 + an extra $4 to add 2 pieces of bacon. (The bacon is totally worth it though). The potatoes recipe need to be completely refined, or they need to offer a substitution option for them. They are overly soft and they don't have nearly enough seasoning. That was the only thing that remained on my plate when I was done! and the soft boiled egg tasted a little off to me, like it had been sitting for a bit long. Other than that, the Turkish eggs and chopped chicken salad were very fresh and good. Staff were super nice when ordering at the counter, coffees and pastries were good as well. Overall I will come back here, just would like to see some quality changes with the Mr Breakfast as it used to be very good.

So I'm sad to see the decline in this establishment. Upon entering I immediately noticed the worn upholstery in the booths. A serious makeover is needed. So trashy. But I get it times are hard. My food arrived on a chipped plate - time to throw it away folks. The counter server was very friendly as normal so that's a definite plus. However the BLT I ordered looked like they threw all the ingredients on the toast with no real prep. The tomato jam was not jam but pieces huge chunks too big to eat. While I'm glad they aren't skimping on the ingredients it was piled so high that it was challenging to eat. I ended up eating it in pieces with my fork and as such lost the tastiness of a combination of the flavors as it quickly became a deconstructed mess. A huge plus - the Seattle Fog was probably the best "London" fog I've ever had !!! Bravo. Not sure I'll come back again this visit. Maybe I'll check it next summer to see if improvements have been made.

The food selection is solid: sandwiches, hearty breads, and a variety of desserts. I tried the brioche and the pistachio tart. There's an outdoor patio and a second floor, so you can usually find a spot. Nice weather? Go for the patio. Need to focus? The corner seats upstairs are your best bet.

First thing to mention, kudos for their longevity. They are coming up on their first decade next summer. The cafe decor also held up pretty well, including the large glass fixture from the ceiling. Seattle Sunshine Coffee also outlived Ventoux that I had mentioned in my prior post. The barista and I compared my 2016 stamp card to the current design, just had a few slight different nuances. This indie cafe had folks onsite, but not packed. There was still room available whether seated along the sidewalk, main seating area, or the upstairs mezzanine. Some convos to be had, but most of the cafe clientele were on their laptops or reading. Pastry case was well stocked with the wholesale variety from Macrina, plus the usual bevs and cafe fare. I enjoyed my near two hour onsite visit. The only thing I wished is that I had brought a hoodie. The AC was jacked up. and of course, I had savored an iced mocha. Hopefully my next cafe detour won't take nine years though between visits.
