When I first walked in I could tell immediately Aurum Maui was special. I found myself in a warm, comforting atmosphere full of enticing yet subtle scents. Natasha as hostess is kind, convivial and greets you with a full aloha welcome. I was seated and promptly assisted by Justin who had a vast knowledge of the menu and was well educated in accommodating gluten allergies. I chose Aurum for its ethically sourced ingredients as well as its conscious decision to provide truly gluten free options. Justin answered all my questions and provided good suggestions. I chose two dishes. The first was a visually stunning citrus cured Kona kampachi crudo in a delectable broth. It was a delight to all of my senses. Undefinable and mysterious. Light and flavorful. It is one of my all time favorites of any restaurant anywhere; that is saying something because I have been blessed to eat well in some lovely countries. The second dish was the pumpkin soup with coconut cream, mint, and pepitas. This was deeply satisfying, round and full bodied but not heavy. It felt gratified and satisfied. Tonight we went to try the Aurum Maui at Wailea to celebrate my 65th Birthday and I must say my friends and I were disappointed. Server- we asked if they give a Kamaiana discount and she said yes and it's 20%. We got our bill and she didn't give us the discount and so we asked her for it. We found out that it is Only 10% NOT 20%, so that was misleading. Then there is a 3% Employee Benefit that is a mandatory NOT an Option with our billing!! Again we were not told about it in advance. This was disappointing as Kamaiana we try to give business to the restaurant but it's crazy expensive. Our server was nice but did not do a good job in explaining and giving us the wrong information. Food- the appetizer were good and came out really fast. Our dinner however took a Long Time. My friends and ordered the same food but it felt like forever to come to our table. Surf and turf dish was good. Ambiance is okay nothing special. Overall, my friends and decided that we will not come back again for dinner as we feel that it's overpriced and service was just okay. This restaurant just opened 2 months ago in Wailea. We took our friends to give it a go. We had reservations at 1800 and were seated promptly. We noticed the restaurant was extremely noisy measuring 84 decibels. We could hardly hear each other across the table. The acoustics of the restaurant were not good! The ambiance as well as the spatial arrangement were modern and contemporary. The seats were comfortable with minimalist design. The service was attentive , comfortable and friendly! The appetizer fried chicken breast with gouchang sauce was dry. The farm salad was phenomenal and tasty. The beet salad was also excellent. The fried curries cauliflower was crispy and lots of flavors. The main entrees was smashed burger was okay and nothing to raved about! The ahi sandwich was not inspiring nor spectacular! The catch fish of the day was kampachi serve with radish puree and vegetable which was super delicious with lots of flavors however it was serve cold. Lastly the farm raised pork was well presented with bold flavors however it was serve cold and send it back where it was reheated thus making the pork tough and chewy like leather! They gave us a complementary apple banana cake with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzle with caramel pepper which was sweet and savory. We each order chocolate ganache bar topped with fresh strawberries which was delectable. The mango lilikoi was delicious but would be better made in an ice cream. The chocolate chip cookies was truly not a cookie more like a cake serve with strawberry flavor milk. We were not impressed with the culinary flavors of this restaurant especially serve in cold food. We were excited to see a new place with a friendly name (we have been to a sister restaurant in Steamboat, CO) and this location blew us out of the water!! TLDR; good vibes, amazing food, and friendly and knowledgeable staff with a passion for the food and drinks they are serving! I started off with a 1944 Mai Tai (recommended by the host who seated/greeted us) which was everything I was looking for in a cocktail (normally more of a whiskey/old fashioned drinker) this spin on a Mai Tai was both extremely boozy with just enough sweetness and banana taste that it was the perfect tropical combo for me. My wife got the Faux Spritz and the Pimm'sless Cup and they were the perfect NA drinks for her to enjoy the tropical fun. We had the Rolls and Meatballs for appetizers. The meatballs were incredible, the harissa and tzatziki sauce give it the exact perfect Mediterranean flair, and the rolls were amazing with the crown jewel that is the decadent honey allspice butter. For dinner I had the Paniolo smash burger and to say it was amazing would be an understatement. The mix of local pork and beef with decadent Maui onions were so tropically unique while also giving me those home midwestern vibes. Comfort food meets island flavor! My friends and I decided to check out Aurum since they just opened and we were excited to check out Chef Taylor's new spot! My group ordered a bunch of appetizers for happy hour: fried chicken, house rolls, loaded fries, okonomiyaki, cauliflower, and meatballs. Some were better than others. After happy hour, we moved into their regular menu and ordered the gnocchi, pumpkin soup, tomato salad, smash burger, kanpachi, lope's farm pork and the lobster roll. Besides the tomato salad and the kanpachi, everything else fell flat. Either the presentation of the dishes was subpar, the flavors were mediocre or the main component of the meal was overcooked or under-seasoned. I personally ordered the lobster roll, and I must say it was the most disappointing meal to hit before me. I was most excited for it and I couldn't take another bite because it lacked flavor. But the most disappointing part about the dish was that it was very small and the lobster was presented on a hotdog bun! For $32, I expected the lobster roll to be better than that. Besides the food, the service was great. Our server attentively checked up on us. However, drinks and food took awhile to hit the table. The ambiance of the restaurant was my favorite part of my dining experience. The restaurant has been beautifully renovated and I love the vibe throughout my time there. It might take some time for me to revisit, but I'll definitely come back to try the food and drinks again. The kampachi and the smash burger were two great, very different choices. We tried both the tomato and the bibb salad, and they were flavorful and fresh. Try the gnocchi and KAUA'I PRAWN OKONOMIYAKI for original starters. Also, we were comped the night's soup selection, butter nut squash, and we'd order that again on our own. We had a wonderful dinner here past Monday. A relatively new restaurant in the Wailea shopping center. Food is creative. Chef and spouse are owners. Treat you like royalty. Started with garlic black hummus with garden fresh veggies for dipping. These veggies are directly from the garden. Winter radishes, turnips etc. Our server brought extra to finish off the hummus. Chef prepares pork dishes off the whole hog. I had spicy pasta with chunks of pork belly in a sauce featuring chili flakes and parsley. Delicious. My wife had fish collar with a turnip creamy mash. Excellent. Wines by the glass are priced fair. The owners are focused on providing great food with friendly efficient service. We'll be back on our next visit to Wailea. read more
