Have not been back to Austin for awhile. For those wondering, there are three Austin House Fish & Chips locations, two are franchises and one original. Guess which is the original one? You know the feeling of greasy aftertastes when you consume deep fried food from McDees to KFCs to any even diners, the inflammatory hotness, the inflammation in the roof of the mouth and tongue? Swollen gums? This is usually caused by poor quality ingredients or re-using of rancid oil for deep frying. Result is discomfort and or general unwellness. The reason I bring this up is, after eating at Austin's, I have zero negative aftertastes and zero signs of inflammation. For lunch I ordered the 3 piece wild cod fish and chips. The chips is nothing fancy. In fact slightly over cooked. Some on Yelp says chips is frozen-could well be?!? But the fish....the wild cod... is fantastico. Thinly battered flakey firm fish. We were part of a big group of friends catching up over fish and chips. Service provided by Cindy was quick, efficient and friendly; everyone was served at the same time. Food was good, great fries - no burnt or soggy fries, wild cod and halibut was fresh with good batter and the coleslaw was a delicious lemony finish to the meal. This has always been our favorite Austins location. Please give the new owners a chance to settle in. read more

Very disappointed. They recently had an owner change and they are not cooking the fish long enough. I asked them to cook my fish a little bit longer as I found it was undercooked last time. I went to pick it up, they told me if it looks wet when you get home just put it in the oven and cook it some more. They obviously didn't cook it longer as I requested and it was undercooked when I got home. I had to re-cook it. I get takeout so I don't have to cook. Very disappointing as I have been going to this restaurant for approximately 20 years and every time the fish was cooked perfectly. read more

Food was godly, my soul ascended and I'm not even much a fan of sea food but this was delicious, the service was incredible, the ladies were checking how good the food was about every five minutes and we bought the all-you-can-eat deal and it was no problem to fill it up so amazing deal, the ambience wasn't chaos but not fully peaceful. Austin House Pitt Meadows is the only one that delivers wild fish in affordable price whilst serving it in the best possible thin batter, freshly fried on order, with unlimited fries. Because I am on a low-carb diet, I asked to substitute fries with coleslaw and it was done - no questions asked. The coleslaw is very basic so it is NOT a feature. The fish size is at least double of other establishment that sells wild-fish & chips (Pajo). I brought along my food scale and the average wild cod piece weighed in at 4.5oz per piece! (see photo) I am also very keen on observing what food cause body to inflammed (sore gums). I have to report both my husband and I did not experience any inflammation that we normally do when eating fish & chips in other places. As a recipe developer, I know the use of low quality, repeatedly reused and oxidized oil in deep-fry is a major cause of inflammation. So, I know Austin House Fish & Chips at Pitt Meadows did not cheap out on changing their oil. The fries are hand-cut, and has authentic potato taste rather than starch and flour filler in it. My husband and I are into eating REAL FOOD, therefore, the fries here fits the bill (as opposed to Mcdonald's fake fries where we are just eating flour). I usually do not spend time writing review but because this is THE BEST fish & chips I have had, and seeing that there is so few recent reviews, I wish to do some justice to these owners who have the right philosophy of serving high-quality whole real food, reasonably priced. Decor: Since all the money is probably spent towards buying the highest quality fish and maintaining good oil practice, I can absolutely overlook the older worn look of the very clean, well-kept place. Afterall, I am here for the fish, not for fancy place. Caveat: This is a franchise business, so what is excellent here does not mean will translate in another location (Coquitlam). We eat here all the time. They have really good Wild Cod and chips. Usually the lunch special is from 12 to 4 and very tasty and affordable. Located in a busy plaza so parking can be found further away as it is near a busy Starbucks and Small theatre. Try them out. read more

We always enjoy fish and chips. They do English-style fish & chips (and a selection of other seafood dishes as well), and do them "good"!! When we're 'around that way', it's where we head for lunch or dinner. We've always found they provide good-sized servings of both the fish and the chips, 'piping-hot' to your table, along with a rather decent cold slaw on the side. We've dined in several times, and have enjoyed doing their take-out a few times as well, when seeing and/or staying with friends in town, or by ourselves at a nearby hotel. I've gone to this place since I moved out to Maple Ridge in 2008. Sadly, it seems that this place has gone downhill since then. Recently the fish has become a little more greasy, tasting a little burnt, and the chips aren't that great either.
