First time at this location and was happy with our visit. The place was a bit busy for early dinner but the owner/server was very quick and friendly. We've ordered the 2 pieces Alaska Wild Cod with Fries and Coleslaw. Serving size was big, so much freshly cooked fries and coleslaw was good too. The Fish was so hot, doesn't smell and delicious. ...after listening to the staff argue in another language for 10 minutes while everyone else watched on...I paid $30 for 2 pieces of fish and chips... (but that wasn't the outrage)... I see that they provided a small 1Oz cup of tarter sauce and when I asked for another one, they wanted to charge me $1.00 BUT... if i sat down in the restaurant, squeezed the entire bottle of Tarter sauce onto my plate for free?????? Found myself all the way out in the boonies once upon a time, and stopped at this place. Wow what a gem, and too bad its an hour away! This place is old school family style. It's simple and unassuming, the prices are a good value - especially if you can spring for the all you can eat - 16 bucks for cod? what a deal. The batter itself is unlike any fish and chip I've had - it doesn't become floppy or thin. It remains crispy and crunchy through the whole meal, and it keeps the fish inside moist and tender. Ketchup and Tartar provided in large squirt bottles to your hearts content. Definitely come and give this a try if you're in the area... Hate to say it, but I'd say it beats out Steveston's best even. read more

Popped in near closing, but they accommodated us. Food was hot, fresh, and great tasting. Unassuming place - old family run restaurant. The whole place could use a remodel, but none of that mattered at all. Back to the food. We had ling cod and halibut with fries. Big pieces, crispy tasty batter - not oily at all. Fries were crispy and tasted like - hello - potatoes! Caesar salad had sunflower seeds in in, lettuce was crunchy and overall, a good replacement for the fries. Although the tartar sauce was in a large squeeze bottle and you could use as much as you liked, it was generic flavoured. Could have been a bit more pickle flavoured, but, with ingenuity a few of us squeezed it in our plates and added a few drops of vinegar - and voila! Overall good price, good portion, great quality, great service, 80s cafe atmosphere. The qualifier for a good fish and chips meal- how you feel after, and we felt good. No heavy sore gut, no heartburn, no belching - so that's a good deep fry! read more

When I'm in the mood for fish and chips, I'm looking for a nice fillet of halibut, served over a handful of french fries that taste like potatoes. I want the fish to be firm and to flake when I cut it; I want the batter to be crisp and dry to the touch. I don't need a lemon wedge, but I want my fish and chips served with malt vinegar and table salt. Sadly, like Celine Dion and Stephen Harper, fish and chips disappoints more often than not. Too many places buy Sysco-style pre-battered, fry-from-frozen, industrial omnifish that comes out of the kitchen sodden and textureless, like a brown, fillet-shaped dishcloth fresh from the sink. Pubs and non-specialist restaurants are a typical source of this sort of substandard fare. Austin Fish & Chips, on the other hand, makes some surprisingly good fish and chips. They hand-batter their fillets and fry them in the same fryer that is responsible for their french fries, which probably contributes to their excellent taste. Their fish is well cooked but not over-cooked and their fries are crisp and mouthwatering; their cole slaw could use some help but you didn't go there for the cole slaw. The fillets are served over a mound of fries and come with the obligatory wedge of lemon and dab of foul tartar sauce, but malt vinegar and salt are readily available if you ask for them. Don't worry about the Fisheries Act violations; the fish the owners bought may have been illegal but a nice halibut is a nice halibut, whether you bought it from a respected wholesaler or from the back of someone's F150. Austin Fish & Chips is everything a fish and chip shop should be and nothing more. By the way, the secret to not burning your mouth on the clam chowder is to blow on it a bit. read more

I really like halibut fish & chip they offer. It's so tasty and the texture is just unbeatable. I had on occasions drove all the way from Vancouver to Maple Ridge just for its fish & chip. Like the other users commented, fish and chips are usually more dissappointing than not. However for this particular Austin Fish & Chip, they consistently meet my expectation of deliciousness. First time coming here and it's a great place! It wasn't such a busy time when my partner and I came in, and we were able to be seated right away. The woman attending to us was very polite and definitely contributed to a great experience. We got fried pickles as an appetizer, and afterwards,​ we both had the $6.75 snack-size​ Fish and Chips (comes with two pieces of Halibut and fries). Both dishes did not disappoint! I have eaten at this Austin Fish House for 5 years now, and I always enjoy the food. The fish on the Cod dinner is cut thicker than most places and it is moist and flavorful with a crunchy batter coating. I always get my chips extra crisp, because I like them darker than most people do and they hold up any topping including full on Poutine. The coleslaw is mixed fresh with you order with a choice of creamy or vinegar style dressing. Try the deep fried zucchini, always one of my favorites and never frozen! The restaurant is simple and clean, and the service is always good with servers who are more like family than employees. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a great fish and chip dinner for a reasonable price. Take the whole family! Everyone will enjoy the meal! read more

Watch out prices on the website are not the same at the restaurant. And they won't honor it...said they forgot pass word to log into web site to change pricing......not impressed at all. There food is good....but not telling customers what the correct pricing is is very unethical and disappointing..especially since I like to support local biusiness....will not be going back any time soon. read more

Really looking forward to some good fish & chips today, so we headed to place that used to be great. Haven't been in about 6 months, and will not be returning ever again. Chips tasted either reheated, or as if they were sitting a long time. Fish was nicely battered and cooked, but very expensive for such poor quality. We ordered two 2 piece Cod, and the portions are about half the size they used to be for $12.50 each. Plus they now charge for what used to be free, Tartar sauce & Coleslaw. Even though we ordered take away, no napkins or utensils either, which we didn't notice until after we had left. It sucks when a place you used to count on locally goes down the tank, but this place is pretty crappy now, and I will never go back. read more

We went in there the other day to have supper in the evening. The first thing since we open the door the whole place smelled like fish factory the grease smelled like it hasn't been changed in a very long time. We had to leave before we ordered because my wife started getting sick because of the smell. We definitely will not be going back there ever again until they learn how to learn how to do food safety. read more
