You'll like this if: You're in the Addison area and looking for serviceable BBQ with a full bar. You won't like this if: You're looking for the kind of elite BBQ you can find at the best spots in Texas; you don't like your meat with heavy smoke. The Details: #1 - Loaded Fries: Yeah. That's not a great sign, right? When the best item on the menu at a BBQ place is a side. And, honestly, the name is even a misnomer. A "loaded" potato usually has a lot of toppings. The fries at Snuffer's have bacon, jalapenos, cheese, etc. But my "loaded fries" here had cheese and my choice of meat (I got the jalapeno sausage). Don't get me wrong. Meat + cheese + fried potatoes is pretty good. But it's not loaded. #2 - Jalapeno Sausage: BBQ is subjective, to some degree, and personally I want every place to have a good pepper-cheese sausage. This was just a spicy sausage. It wasn't bad, though. #3 - Pork Ribs: They were decent. They didn't fall off the bone--which is a positive. They weren't overly smoky. They were probably not ribs I would go out of the way to get. But they were serviceable. The Line: There was no line when I went (Saturday evening). A few people were at the bar. But that's not to say there wasn't a wait. They don't cut your meat at the counter here or serve the sides in front of you. You order at a counter (everyone was friendly) and it comes out later. Other: Considering how many restaurants and people are in Dallas, it's kind of shocking how there are areas in the suburbs where have to drive 20 miles to find superior BBQ. Addison is one of those areas. You can go to Frisco or Plano. Or you can wait in the absurd line at Cattlelack on the two days away they're open. That's it. That's your options. Blu's on Preston has potential, but it's not there yet. And Austin's is nowhere near. I'm not expert in how to prepare great BBQ, but I do know what's good and what's bad. Even if I can't put a finger on why. This is somewhere in between. As previously stated, BBQ is a subjective experience, so you may prefer this over other second tier joints and that will probably be entirely dependent on whether or not you like smoke. The brisket and turkey aren't smokeless roast beef like you find at a lot of mom & pops around town (and Dickey's and Sonny Bryan's). The problem is that it is TOO smokey. And I LIKE smoke. Give me mesquite over mild hickory flavor any day. But this is the bad smoke. And I would suspect it comes from cooking too slow and low. Again, I'm not an expert in process. But the brisket and turkey that I had tried tasted burnt. Plus, it had big globs of fat that didn't render at all. And I think that's what happens when the coals are smoldering. read more

Always willing to try a different barbecue place and happened upon Austin's Barbecue while staying at Home2 Suites by Hilton. It was probably less than 2 miles off of Belt Line Rd on Addison Rd at Keller Springs. Nothing fancy from the outside and your average bbq place on the inside. It was dark and low lighting. The menu was on a chalk board above where you place your order. I had a hard time understanding it totally, so I just said what I was looking for which was a plate with sliced brisket, potato salad, baked beans and an extra side of mac n cheese and a roll and drink. The plate was 19.95, the extra side was 3.50 and the large 32oz drink was 3.75. They did not charge me for a roll was just a packaged roll. Overall, I enjoyed the meal. The potato salad was a mayonnaise based and creamy chunks of potatoes. The beans were a bbq flavored base of pork n beans. The macaroni n cheese was creamy but not real cheesy. The sliced brisket was plentiful. I counted 7 slices of brisket on my plate. It was dry but the mild bbq sauce helped with that. I tipped at the register but probably should not have considering I pretty much waited on myself for everything. So, with the tip my bill came to 36.59. A bit much for one person but live and learn. Now, y'all know the quickest way to start a fight in Texas is to declare ANY joint as "the best." But I can unequivocally say this is the best in Addison right now; and probably the last ten to fifteen years (I still miss Solly's - IYKYK). When they first opened, I wasn't that impressed. It was good bbq, but pedestrian. Since then, it's just gotten better. I asked them two years ago to cater a lunch for my brother's co-workers. My brother died very suddenly/unexpectedly and his work colleagues were hit hard by his loss. They were so nice to me and I knew they loved him. To show my appreciation, I sent them lunch (including dessert) from Austins. They did a magnificent job, and I'm still grateful. So, try them for catering. I was reminded how good they've gotten when I practically swallowed that slider whole, even without sauce! For a holiday, it was a steady lunch crowd and no one minded a few minute wait for their plates. It's nice and cool, full bar, a little country, but not obnoxious. The food shines here. It's a bit pricey. Even for very good. I ordered a pound of chopped brisket just for me (and the furry f'ers I live with) at $25. I got it home and I have to say, it looks like a very generous pound. My office is just a few blocks away and the smell from their smoker has been calling my name since they opened. I finally stopped in yesterday and picked up an order to go. Even though I have worked in this immediate area since 1996, I had never been in this place since it had been a sports bar/pilot hangout previously. I was pleasantly surprised with the welcoming interior. The woman working the counter was friendly and helpful. Since the place was not busy (it was about 11:45) and I saw the owner, I tried to get his attention to make a comment and give a compliment. He was "too busy" to talk to me, but the young man working for him was very friendly and served as a good surrogate. I got my order in a short time and went back to my office. First, I did not get the correct side items (remember, they were not busy). I had ordered cole slaw and what the blackboard called black eyed peas. (Turns out it is really BEP salad, not BEP.) Instead of the peas, I got potato salad. The cole slaw was good; I did not care for the potato salad at all. But the star of the show was the sliced brisket. It was excellent. "Moist" without even requesting it. The sauce is very good, neither too sweet nor too vinegary. I will be back, but probably just buy meats by the pound to take home. read more

I love whatever they marinate the meat in its git like a smoky pepper taste. The ribs were really tender and the chicken was so moist. AND they give you HUGE portions. For sides i had baked beans which were tummy and greens that were perfectly cooked. We chose Austin's for our Christmas lunch today. I called in yesterday and ordered, and we picked it up today. Turkey was perfect. Nicely peppered, moist and flavorful. Brisket was really good. Not greasy at all. Pulled pork was also moist and had a good, smoky flavor. Sauce is good. Mac n cheese, creamy and fresh tasting. The one who ate the slaw loved it.
