We found the service to be really nice, the atmosphere nice and open, the food was hit or miss and the price can be considered a bit steep for a single taco. Some hits were definitely the MXN Street Corn (grilled sweet corn, guajillo, cilantro, bone marrow dukes, queso fresco) which is essentially elote and had some nice smoke flavor to it. Also great was their Wake Up!! taco (chili & coffee smoked brisket, apple, anytime slaw, blueberry ghost pepper crema, flour tortilla) which had layers of flavors and texture to it. Both were big winners for us. The not so great was their poke appetizer which was pretty small and one note in flavor. The same can be said about their Bulgogi taco (Ribeye, kimchi, peanuts, cilantro, steamed bun). The Dubai taco (chicken tikka, green curry raita pickled grapes, red onion saffron tortilla), while not our favorite, was more enjoyable the previous two items mentioned. Some interesting takes on tacos, some of which aren't tacos at all, but rather buns. I felt there was some more thought to their menu than simply trying to make hipster tacos. In a positive sense, it does not have that kind of a feel. There is more of a global perspective in what they're trying to do and I give them credit for it. Tempura fish taco highly recommended!! Beet, cabbage, lime mayo, and radish - perfect flavour and texture, easily a 5-star. The brisket and avocado tacos were excellent too. I thought the octopus taco was a bit salty, the octopus was tender though. You can order single orders to try a bit of everything, it works out to be about $6 per taco depending what you order. This place is located centrally in downtown, a joint to the Hilton. It's a fun hip space w large outdoor seating and very spacious. Overall, I was thoroughly satisfied w the meal though I will say it was kind of expense ($70 for two: 2 drinks, 4 tacos, & 3 appetizers) but loved all the food The drinks were delicious! I had a Pismo Punch and it was sweet, and smooth. Just visited this establishment with a group of Yelpers and our entire experience couldn't have been more awesome. I love the unique tacos that Austin Taco Project has to offer. They have something for every one and for every dietary restriction and definitely for every kind of craving. The salmon poke was seasoned to perfection and that is exactly how I love eating poke. Their bacon blended deviled eggs were delicious and creamy; the perfect bar snack. I loved the onion dip served with chicharron, however I did ask for a side of flat bread to dip, and I am glad I did because that dip was extremely delicious with the flatbread. Perhaps they can start including pieces of flat bread with their onion dip? The lamb taco was well seasoned and juicy while the Vietnamese chicken had the perfect combination of creamy and spicy. We ordered the lavender lemonade, however I couldn't taste much lavender in it. This was probably the only thing I didn't enjoy as much. The pièce de résistance was the Trio of Stuffed Churros dessert. TBH I would probably come back to Austin Taco Project just for that. The Mexican dipping chocolate that came with was divine. If this is what churros are supposed to taste like, then I have been eating the wrong churros in the many years of my existence. Piggybacking on other reviews management laid out the red carpet for the AA UYE as they reserved the entire patio section for us, comped our parking, and staffed two great servers who kept up with our another round & more food requests. Booze: Decent beer selection and some mighty fine craft cocktails. I agree with another AAer that they were short on the alcohol but it lead to more cocktails and the ability to enjoy the rest of the evening. I sampled a classic margarita (on the rocks no salt) and it point on, for me. This was not the sour mix you typically get at a chain restaurant it definitely ranked as a craft cocktail. I'm visiting Austin for work for this week. I got into my hotel, my room wasn't ready, and was immediately on the hunt for some good Mexican food (when in Texas) in the meantime. Naturally, I searched Yelp and made my way over to this place. Very quintessential hipster Southern ambiance with some top 40 jams playing in the background. Because it was only a little after 5pm, I was one of the only ones in the place. But luckily for me, I made it there during happy hour. Started off with a house margarita (usually $10, but $5 for HH) - so delicious, perfect blend of tequila, salt, and whatever else goes into a margarita! Then dove into the Whatataco and Baja x Austin tacos, and the Smokeadilla (half off for HH too.) HO-LY SHIT. The food was out of this world. The tacos were stuffed to the brim with fresh ingredients and sauces, while the Smokeadilla was a delightful Southern twist to the quesadilla. I don't think I took a breath that entire dinner. And because I checked in with Yelp, I ended up getting one of the tacos free, too - YAY! My waitress was attentive, friendly, and just all-around easy to talk to. I truly enjoyed the grub at this place. Tacos were my sandwiches growing up. Does that make me a taco snob? Yes and no. I am picky, but my taco enjoyment tends to go towards the simple and cheap. Sometimes I allow very interesting and tasty taco creations to change that standard taco love and this place has done just that! Overall, it appears that everything on the menu at this place is pretty tasty and worth a try. Didn't dive into the desserts, but others in my group that did and enjoyed them. Plenty to drink in terms of beers and cocktails. Yes the prices are downtown prices, but they by no means are not worth it. The guys in this kitchen know what they are doing and the chefs are definitely not afraid to play with flavor combinations to get to the delights you'll find on the menu. It's hard for this Mexican heritaged chef to back $5+ tacos, but this place will be visited again next time I'm with friends in that area. I tried the phenomenal poutain tater tots to share and there were more than enough to go around. The 2 tacos I tried were also very tasty and filling. I came here with a group if picky Yelpers, and I don't think any of us were unhappy with what was tried. I've eaten here many times over the past few years; however, things have continued to decline. The food is decent, but service and staff are almost nonexistent. Granted it's tough to find people to just show up for work. If you're in the hotel and ordering takeout you may as well just ask them to give you what they think you want. We all know that Austin is famous for its tacos, the real decision is where you are going to go for them. I looked to Yelp to see the closest taco place between our hotel and where we were going with the highest rating. Austin Taco Project was one that came up and it didn't seem as though we needed a reservation. When we arrived, we realized we were in a Hilton. Unsure about our decision now that we knew it was a hotel Restaurant, we still proceeded to go in and check it out. Hotel restaurants are notorious for not having the greatest food and also having the highest prices. We also saw that the restaurant was not very busy but given that it was a little bit early, we didn't read into that too much. We weren't necessarily greeted by anyone, we just made ourselves look helpless and lost enough that someone finally asked us where we wanted to sit. We looked around the bar area that had limited seating, and the main dining area and we decided on the latter. Our server came over to us to take our drink order. I got the seafoam which was a tequila drink served up, and my colleague got a margarita. My colleague only wanted to do an appetizer because she wasn't too hungry so she got the corn dip which I tried and was pretty good. I got the Carnitas tacos and they were delicious. They didn't come with anything, but it didn't really need to. The food was good and came out very quickly. The service was OK, ultimately she wasn't very engaged and just wanted to get to the point of taking our orders. The prices were a little bit higher because it is a hotel restaurant, and I do think that if we did a little bit more research into the Austin Taco game, we probably could've done better. I don't know how to write a review that would depict how actually perfect Austin Taco Project is, but I'm gonna try. First of all, it's open late. And that's something that's so necessary to me. It's decorated very colorfully and modern. It was just pretty to look at. That was one of the first things I noticed. Our server was Jamieson and I've never had such an informative server before who wasn't annoying! Haha. I enjoyed listening to him explain everything. He was so helpful and gave us his opinions on anything we asked about. I respected him for how knowledgeable he was. The two drinks we had were amazingly made. I would trust those bartenders to make me anything. The street corn was honestly so authentic. (I added hot sauce to mine and sort of wished for salt but still.) I'm also a big fan of deviled eggs and theirs was probably the most flavorful and balanced I've had. Our tacos were on point. My personal favorite: Wilbur n Huevos. I BASICALLY DIED EATING IT IT WAS SO GOOD. My fiancé got the Baja and also loved it. And then the Assistant General Manager came by, spoke to us, walked us around the place to show us all these extra rooms they have, and was so friendly and personable. When you immediately walk in the door, you're greeted with friendly faces of hosts dressed in casual attire with a modern speakeasy feel; spectators, bowling shoes, bow ties, suspenders,- all surrounded by an updated mid century-mod decor was definitely a refreshing change of scenery from the previous resident (rest in restaurant heaven, Liberty Tavern). We were sat at a corner banquet near the door. Table was an adequate size for tapas and cocktails, however, there are also larger dining tables available as well. Our server, Justine greeted us promptly, took our drink orders and provided a kid's menu (yes, a kid's menu! A nice surprise.) I ordered a "Feeling all Prickly", which was not only refreshing, but gorgeously garnished with flowers and is the perfect hue of radiant orchid. Hubby ordered a "Paloma by the Sea", which he loved; The sea foam added to the top gave a nice salty bite at the edge of each sip, that was a unique touch... and our daughter had the iced tea (which is unsweetened, by the way) and she enjoyed it. Moving on to appetizers, which were ALL winners in my book: MXN street corn is amazing- fresh, grilled corn with a delightful, buttery crunch Korean Nachos are fantastic- a flavorful Asian fusion in the form of stacked nachos- A MUST! Smokeadilla- Smoked brisket in a quesadilla...Need I say more?! All apps went well with the variety of hot sauces that ATP offers (by way of Houston's own Bravado Spice Co.).-- the jalapeno green apple is excellent. The apps are all shareable [or not] size ;) Now for the main attraction...because, let's face it,.. we really came for the TACOS! As if the attire, decor, drinks an apps weren't enough to send this artist's aptitude for creativity over the top, the mere sight of the works of art they call tacos sent me soaring, y'all. [insert taco dance break] The three of us took turns trying each taco ordered. After her first bite, my daughter decided to toss the kid's menu aside and join our sophisticated taco-tasting party. Lineup: My top three: The "Wake Up" taco. My favorite. I loved the "apple anytime" slaw and the "blueberry ghost pepper crema" = party in your mouth! The Dubai- My 2nd favorite. It not only smelled great but the flavors in this colorful creation go so well together and the sweetness of the grapes was a perfect finish. Baha x Austin- My 3rd favorite: Beer battered fish with flavorful garishes to boot. Light and fresh yet deliciously satiating . Our daughter loved the Whatataco (yes, a taco that tastes like our infamous Texas-born burger, basically). She went to school the next day telling her friends about it. Hubby loved it too; To sum it all up, there's food here for everyone's palette. Bravo, Austin Taco Project! The menu was well thought out and creatively articulated yet simple...not over the top and fussy. I absolutely adore the concept and atmosphere. I can't wait to tell all my friends about it. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I kinda have to in this situation. Let me start by saying our service started out great. Our server was friendly and helpful, but after our meal we kept waiting for our check in an almost empty restaurant. It took the hubs and I walking to find our server to finally get the check. To his credit he was super apologetic... The dinner itself was not great. They had run out of Brussels so we ordered chips and onion dip which was fine. Nothing great-basic chips and dip. Think Ruffles and the white dip you get from the jar at the grocery store. We ordered the elote which was good, but nothing I would come back for. In terms of tacos we got three different kinds: The brisket, the chimichurri, and the Moroccan. The best was probably the brisket which is not saying all that much. The beef in the chimichurri was tough and the Moroccan had little flavor. I couldn't finish the chimichurri or the Moroccan. There are so many taco places around Austin that are great I would not recommend if you are in town visiting. I'm not sure if we just happened upon this spot on a bad day, but I know we won't return even if we go back to Austin. read more

I don't know even where to begin with this review. I was a hangry little girl craving tacos after 9pm with a group and checked out 2 yelp taco places that said they were opened. Trekking through the humidity we found out they were both closed so of course I was hungry, grumpy, and sweaty. This little shop was in our HOTEL, and we never thought to eat there so we ended up going. Ambiance is beautiful and the staff is amazing JAMISON (I hope that's how you spell it) was a wonderful server even with our huge group. This is NOT your average taco shop, this is a world culture taco place that brings you different flavors from all over the world. So you don't have the options of carne Asada taco or chick taco but random flavor pairings I tried the P.E.T.A taco and it was beyond incredible, it was a vegetarian taco although I'm not a vegetarian it just sounded delicious. Even their octopus Thai taco was new flavor that I personally enjoyed! Our server recommended poutine with was the hit of the group. Great price for quality flavors. Creative and tasty tacos, but pretty variable in terms of size/value. I ordered the poke appetizer and the Bulgogi and Good Morning Vietnam tacos. Everything tasted solid - the marinade on the poke was sweet and savory, and the presentation with crispy lotus roots on top of daikon slices was interesting. The bulgogi was a tad salty but generally got the flavor right and was complemented well by the sour kimchi. The good morning Vietnam taco had caramel chicken and pickled veggies, and it was my favorite of the three because they salty and sweet sauce mixed with the acidic vegetables and spicy chilis created a nice balance. It was also my favorite of the 3 because it was far and away the best value - a decent sized taco with plenty of meat for $4. The other items were quite small - the bulgogi taco was served in a soft bao that was about half the size despite costing $2 more. And the serving of poke was on the small side as well, considering it cost $8 and a full pole bowl is only about $11. I ended up ordering another Good Morning Vietnam to fill up. Good fish tacos, good guacamole and salsa....but I can't tell you anything else about the other three appetizers we ordered because they never made it to the table. We ordered apps, drinks, and tacos. The server brought us a basket of primarily broken chip bits, salsa and guacamole followed by our tacos five minutes later. Still no apps after an HOUR of waiting- even though we kept being told they were coming. Eventually after sitting there for so long with empty glasses, and half eaten plates of tacos, we just got up and hunted down a server to cancel the three apps and bring our check. The poke was amazing, and the pickled daikon was an unexpected nice touch. It added a great texture and flavor to the poke. The Mexican corn was ok, and a little heavy on the mayo, but not bad. Where they really shine is the tacos themselves. The oc-Thai-pus taco was amazing. The flavors reminded me of eating a good Thai curry. Mmm... The good morning Vietnam was also another winner.
