The second night we were in the Destin area we wanted something laid back. No frills, seafood, a bar, and some good food. We landed on Austons after checking them out online and on Yelp. It's located in a small stripmall, next to a Winn-Dixie. They do have outdoor and indoor seating. We walked in and were seated. There are a ton of TVs, live music, and a beachy interior. After looking over the menu and it being Friday, which for means it's Lent, so no meat. Which was perfect because I opted to get their fish sandwich, lightly blackened with a side of pepperjack cheese grits, and a lemon drop. My husband had their special, which was the gumbo, and a club sandwich. My little had the kids mac and cheese and a side salad. My husband's gumbo came out and let me tell you, had it not had meat, I would have eaten it all up...it looked so good and he couldn't stop raving about it. My lemon drop came out and was delish...tart, sweet, and went down easy. My little loved his mac and cheese and ate it all up. My meal came out and the fish was perfectly blackened, flakey, and delicious. The cheese grits were creamy and delicious. Service was quick and friendly. They have a variety of items on the menu, their prices are fair, and they also have a happy hour, with money off certain apps and $1 off drinks. We stopped in Austons on a rainy day for some oysters. The restaurant is super cute and clean, and we were seated immediately by a sweet man working there. The oyster sampler was delicious! I enjoyed the Rockefellers, and my husband liked the chipotle ones but warned that they were very spicy! We also got southwest egg rolls and they were good. My grilled grouper sandwich wasn't great. The fish had no flavor and the bun was stale. My husband got the blackened grouper sandwich and his seemed a little better. Still a stale bun though. We had a fantastic time here at Austons on 98 during the week. I highly recommend that you come by early to avoid the rushes. The service here is great. The staff is easy to work with and comes with recommendations for your seafood/bar food experience. We of course are tourists, but it looks like tons of locals come by here as well. Which always let you know that it's a great place to eat. For appitizerswe ordered the local oysters and man oh man they were fantastic. We also tried the oysters with their Mignonette sauce, and I'm glad I did. It added just an extra hint of flavor to make it even better. In addition to this we ordered the little neck clams, and fried calamari. Which were all great. The calamari wasn't super heavy breading and came out just right. For our main courses I ordered the Patriot's lobster tacos which were loaded with lobster. The wife ordered grilled "Who dat" scallops which came out perfectly. As for their beers on tap! Wow they have a lot of local flavor. Which is great since I use the "untapped" app, which they are also a part of. The waitress Chantly H seemed annoyed with our table of 10 from the beginning. The food was good, but not enough to rave about. At the end of dinner when we were done paying our 3 separate checks, she decided to make a rude comment about the tip I left her on my card and said it loud enough for all others outside to hear. First of all she doesn't know me & I usually tip on card & cash because I know some waitresses rather have cash, but once she decided to embarrass me I clearly was not leaving her more $. I am all about amazing customer service and she delivered poor service and judgement all while trying to enjoy dinner while on family vacation. Chantly, you are clearly not happy and I suggest you find a new job or another career possibly where you can make more money and that does not involve people. Who would have guessed that this sports bar located in a strip mall would have such incredible food. If you are football fan, this is the place to catch your team on huge screens. And if you are a beer lover, even better! They have over 100 different beers on tap. My IPA was delicious. One a weeknight in October they were packed, so expect a wait as this is a very popular spot with the locals and probably returning tourists as well. Start your meal with the steamed crab claws, a delicacy in the panhandle and the mussels if they are a special are fabulous too. Was looking for an inexpensive seafood restaurant whe passing through Destin. This was recommended. I ordered scallops and my mom had shrimp and grits. Both were tasty. I would not say this was inexpensive though. Both meals cost around $25 each. I am always skeptical about ordering scallops because so many places charge you a lot of money and give you so few scallops. I did not have that problem here. The scallops were good and they gave me enough to be satisfying. Mom's shrimp and grits were also good (I.had to steal a few bites). The grits were creamy perfection. The blackened shrimp were good but not spicy at all (this was great for me because I do not like spice). The jalapeno hush puppies are spicy if you get a bite with a piece of jalapeno in it. Ordered the broiled oysters with garlic butter and Parmesan to start and they were delicious, they came with some bread to sop up the juicy garlic butter. It would have been better if it were toasted but still good. We split the fried and blackened shrimp entrees, both were good but I preferred the blackened. The veg of the day was black eyed peas and they were yummy. My boyfriend liked the jalapeño hush puppies and Gouda cheese grits, I thought the grits were just ok and the hush puppies were a little too well done so I guess it's a matter of what you like on the sides, good place to go for some simple seafood in a super laid back atmosphere. We went here on a whim for dinner while in the area on vacation. The atmosphere was cool - literally and aesthetically - and there was a very good musician playing in addition to many large screen tvs with sports on. The food was excellent - lobster tacos, lobster roll, and cheese grits as a side were stand-outs for our group! Don't sleep on this restaurant that is tucked into a strip mall. We were here on vacation last year, enjoyed it eating at Auston's and decided to make a repeat visit this year. This place has a nice, beach vibe but is also a sports bar which was great since we wanted to keep up on March Madness. Our server was super friendly and attentive and made sure to check in with us often. We ate on the early side so it wasn't crowded, but I feel like this place might get overlooked for some of the bigger, flashier restaurants on the main drag. Our party of 5 paid 2/3 of what we'd paid to eat at the Surf Hut the night before, but with essentially the same types of food and more alcohol and I thought the food was much better and the servings much bigger. The Big Papi pork rinds were amazing! Their oysters are fantastic as well! We ordered them broiled as an appetizer. The fried oysters were big and delicious and there was a healthy serving of them, too! We also had the fish and a couple of chicken sandwiches - all good! I ADVISE NOT EATING HERE! Go anywhere else! I am a big fan of seafood spots so please trust this review. The food and service is horrible! let's start with the scallops. I cannot stretch this enough DO NOT consume them. When I first bit into them it had an unbelievably strong smell of sour ocean salt water. I I tried them and gagged them into a napkin! If I wanted to eat a ball of ocean water and dirt I would go hop into the ocean and do that for free! I would actually rather do that because it would have been a better experience than eating at this establishment. Let's now talk about the server if you would even call him that because he was the worst. He did not do anything of service at all, was rude, and was just straight up horrible at his job. He should maybe consider switching jobs! The live music was good but that's the last thing on my mind when I'm getting depressed from the server and sickened by the food! I wanted to say something in person but writing this review to keep someone from reliving this nightmare is worth more than any amount of money!
