This is a great place, but Austrian village only takes cash as far as I know still. Authentic German atmosphere.

I am so sad to see the Austrian Village close. This was a favorite restaurant from childhood to now. When we lived in 19111 the village was a two or three times a month. Since then once a month for sure. Many birthdays and too many funeral lunches were held here. There is no equivalent to the village and it will be sorely missed. read more

I wanted to really like this place, but aside from their selection of German beers I'm just not thrilled with it. Don't get me wrong, all the food I had here was fine, but it was nothing spectacular. In fact, I would say their sides seem to be a lot better than their entrees. The potato salad was probably the best thing I had here. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. My most recent visit was the first in years and this place hasn't changed one bit. That might be some of the charm this place has. The interior makes you feel right at home like you're in someone's dining room. Now for the food... I always get their birch beer to drink and it's just on another level. Definitely way better than what you can get in stores. This time I started with the cheesesteak egg-roles and the buffalo boneless wings. They were just okay, but I also recognize this isn't the place to get those sort of things. Where they shine is in the main course! I always get the stuffer schnitzel parm. Just a quick note: As part of our efforts to support local businesses during Covid we got cheeesesteaks here. Both their chicken and beef cheesesteaks are very good and it's a much easier process then driving 20 minutes each way to Dalessandro's. Are the steaks as good as Dalessandro's? Nope. Are they damm good anyway? Is the ordering and pick up process much easier? Do you avoid MAGA idiots exercising their 'right' not to wear a mask while in a line and ignoring social distancing? If you're a first time dinner I highly recommend ordering the Schnitzel (My personal go to order is the Super Schnitzel which comes over a bed of mushrooms and topped with crunchy onions and cheese) with a side of Spaetzle topped with gravy. It's taken decades for us to try Austrian Village. Not sure why. Maybe because I'm not a meat eater and I simply expected it to be all pork, beef, brats, and blood sausage. But they do have chicken and that's what we got. One of our party was thrilled. She doesn't like anything remotely spicy, even the bland mushroom sauce that came with her chicken schnitzel, which she ate dry and enjoyed. I found it all to be of high quality but very low flavor. Sorry! Great portion size, but so bland! Maybe that's what their clientele demands? Next time I get the schnitzel with mushrooms, grilled onions, and cheese. The spaetzle was much appreciated by the crew member who was clamoring for it. I thought the coleslaw was very good. I really want to try the German potato salad next. Came here with friends on a Friday night and we where greeted and seated promptly. The restaurant is nicely decorated, clean and has a European vibe. Our Server was friendly we ordered the following: App- Pretzel with Beer Cheese- Pretzel was great the cheese was too thin and lacked on flavors. The Happy German- 1 Bratwurst, 1 Knockwurst, 1 Kielbasa, 3 slices of Pork Belly, 1 homemade bread dumpling served over Sauerkraut. So yes he was a "Happy German" the plate was very good and the dumpling was amazing you can tell everything is homemade here. Stuffed Schnitzel- which is a Cordon Bleu- stuffed with Ham and cheese served with Spaetzle and Red Cabbage. Flavors where spot on and she enjoyed it. Parmigiana Schnitzel- topped with cheese and tomato sauce served with fries. This meal was great as well. Hungarian Goulash- Served over Spaetzle I opted for Mashed Potato and Spaetzle. The Goulash was ok but was too runny almost like a soup. I enjoy my gravy thicker and my mashed potatoes where cold. Dessert- Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream- Pretty good we enjoyed it since it was big enough to share. Of course we enjoyed the German Draft Beer from Hof Brau Haus. The Austrian Village is one of those places that each time you go to, you wonder why you don't go there more often. I have been coming here as long as I can remember and each time I always leave feeling satisfied and way too full (with leftovers in hand). The decor is a little old fashioned but it makes it feel more authentic. I have been to Austria, and this place reminds me of some of the resturants there. That being said, the food here could hold its own to some of the schnitzel I had in Austria. Schnitzel is thinly pounded meat- usually veal, that is lightly breaded. If you've never had schnitzel you are missing out! The Austrian Village offers lots of different variety's of the dish- my personal favorite is the mushroom schnitzel that comes with gravy/mushrooms on top or the super schnitzel which has cheese, mushrooms and fried onions. The sides are just as good- I always go for the german potato salad or spaetzle, which are basically just (delicious) noodles. read more

Being from out of state, for years, everytime we are in the area, we stop at the austrian village. Surprised that they had changed the times of operation to 3PM which puts us right into bad traffic situation. Since the prices doubled you would think the food also is better quality. Being from austria, i know what a schnitzel tastes like. I got a breaded thick pork jop with no flavor. if he was a specialized cook he would know that the veal, pork, etc. needs to be pounded thin and flavored. Austrian Village is back - woo hoo! This is just a quick updated review to say things have reverted back to their original goodness at Austrian Village. Homemade yummy mashed potatoes? Check! Delicious soups? Check! The original recipe for their Black Forest cake? Check! Creamy coleslaw? Check! Recently hubby has had various sausage and veal dishes and declared them better then ever. I've had the broiled chicken and it was very tender and so nicely seasoned. As you can tell from my list above I love the side dishes as much or more then the entrée. Add in the good beer, great service and reasonable prices they've always had and you really can't go wrong. read more

My parents live around the block yet I haven't really been until tonight. It's usually the place they go to for funeral luncheons since its generally not too crowded. It's an older crowd with what it seems like regulars. Waitresses are older and the one we had wasn't the friendliest (sarcastic remarks and such - I asked her to explain sauerbraten and she gave the same description as on the menu; thanks I can read). What we had: - Bread that is given to table is nothing special - white dinner rolls (not warmed) and some slices of rye bread with containers of butter. 2/5 - Spatzel side for the baby - comes out plain and they ask if you want gravy 3/5 - Snapper soup - always hot and ready to come out. I wasn't a huge fan but they were so 4/5 - Wurst platter appetizer, which included 3 types of sausage (choices are chicken apple, kielbasa, bratwurst and knockwurst - we chose the first 3 and enjoyed the first 2 the most). 4/5 - Crab stuffed mushrooms- they enjoyed (I'm not a mushroom fan). 4/5 - Schnitzel parmagiana - wasn't pounded as flat as other schnitzels elsewhere and the fry wasn't as nice, but it was okay they said. 3/5 - Super schnitzel (with mushrooms and *fried* onions). He thought grilled onions would've been better. 3/5 - Beef rouladen- a bit dry (so good thing there's gravy!). 3/5 - Hungarian goulash, a beef stew in a paprika sauce and I chose that over spatzel (all entrees come with 2 sides). I asked for my spatzel to be the appetizer one (onion and cheese). Goulash had good flavor but meat could've been more tender. 4/5 - Sides were pretty good: german potato salad (vinegar based, served cold), red cabbage (warm and good flavor), homemade sauerkraut Our party seemed more happy with the appetizers and the sides than the main courses. Service: 3/5 quick seating but not the friendliest servers Atmosphere: 3/5 They have events like oktoberfest and I hear have polka dancing? They also have beer stands when Rockledge has the block parties/car shows etc Beer selection: 3/5 They have an okay selection - not as wide as Hop Angel down the street So, it was okay. I like Hop Angel up the street better - a bit younger, more hip, bigger beer selection and they have a braised short rib sandwich that just melts in your mouth. The wings and garlic fries are pretty nice bar food at Hop Angel too. Enjoy :) But, meal was only $90 for the 4 of us and the portions are pretty big (we didn't order alcohol so that was probably a big factor). read more

I've been going to the Austrian Village for over 35yrs and the only thing that has changed are the flat screen TVs. The food, the beer, the service have been consistently awesome! It's not fancy, it's not gourmet, it's just authentic, gut satisfying German food! Start off w/ the snapper soup & any of the ice cold German beers on tap. All the schnitzels are excellent paired w/ spaetzle & red cabbage....you can't go wrong! Always check out the specials, yesterday it was Hungarian Goulash over spaetzle w/ kielbasa then topped w/ a fried egg! I've been wanting to try this place for years. I've lived in the area and never really took the time. While the circumstances for me going here was tragic, I must say they did a great job. The food was absolutely delicious and everyone was very respectful. The roast beef is absolutely delicious! It is basically like a home cooked meal. Comfort food. I definitely want to go back and hopefully it will be for a better reason. In the past they only accepted cash but now they do take credit cards which is more convenient at least for me. This is my parent's favorite old haunt, and they've been brining us back here whenever they can for as long as I can remember. It's been years, though, since I've made the trip, but when we found ourselves in the neighborhood, my parents couldn't resist bringing me and my boyfriend along for lunch. I no longer eat meat, so I had to pass on the schnitzel. Luckily, there were plenty of pescatarian-friendly options, and I went for the blackened grouper. It was a huge piece of fish, cooked well, and I had a double side of spaetzle with brown gravy, which is too good for words. My mom also insisted on a side of potato salad, and boy was I glad she did - it is hands down the best I've ever had, with good mustard-y flavor (none of that mayo soup BS). My bf was very impressed, and thoroughly enjoyed the "special" schnitzel. You can bet we'll be back the next time we're in town. read more

It's an ok German bar. If the best is the Brauhaus on South Street I'll say Austrian village is average. Nothing special about it. It's better than a dive bar. There is no single women here. I love this place! Whenever I would visit family growing up I'd make them take me to the "AV" at least twice during my visits. The previous review was spot on. Food is authentic, beer is fresh. This is not a hip place to go and be seen...which makes it cool in my book! This is the real deal...clientele does lean toward the AARP crowd, but that just speaks to the value to be found here. Big Lesson here: CASH ONLY! Like most cash only places there is an ATM out front, but save yourself the charge and bring cash...good thing is you don't have to bring much ;) I've had an amazing Lamb special here and keep my eye open for it every time I go, but the old stand-by is just pure heaven. I have been coming to the Austrian Village ever since I was "das Mädchen." I have to say, growing up, I remember hating it here. But that might have had more to do with adolescence and going out to eat with my parents than anything else. A whole bunch of years later, this place still exists and looks EXACTLY the same. Paper placemats and napkins, cute old waitresses, plastic cups of soda. My parents, up until a few weeks ago, still went here every single Thursday for dinner with my grandmother. Sadly, grandmom passed away last Sunday and Friday marked the celebration of her life. Where better to have it than an authentic German restaurant that she frequented often, and loved? One of the co-owners sat down with me and my father and planned the luncheon, no nonsense. I have to say, for 75+ people arriving all at once, the service was stellar. Salads were brought promptly to the table, pitchers of beer were rarely empty. They even prepared a plate of veggies for my vegan friend. I would never have thought a place serving brats and schnitzel could accommodate- and satisfy!- a vegan. The food is not amazing. I think the mashed potatoes are instant and the green beans probably come from a can. But it still tastes good. Everyone at my table raved about the weiner schnitzel and cleaned their plates. Another friend decided to order outside the preset menu and get a side of German potato salad. So did I. This potato salad brought tears to my eyes because it tasted just like my grandmom's, the very woman whose life we were celebrating. It also brought me comfort. Last night my mother and wife had dinner at one of Philadelphia's only German restaurants. I ordered the sauerbraten, my mom order Hungarian goulash, and my wife had the bratwurst platter. The sauerbraten meat not tasted odd, as if something might be fundamentally wrong with it, but it was as totally unappetizing as I could possibly imagine. My mother's goulash could, and I say this literally, indistinguishable from dog food. After I tasted it, I felt I need some kind of purgative to cleanse my system. The bratwurst were not quite as awful as the other two, but their consistency was far to "mushy" and bland. The meal was, in summary, disgusting. The ambiance of the place was dark and musty and cheap. I think I've said enough. On the bright side, the food was tellingly inexpensive, if not cheap (that raised serious questions in my mind) and the service was friendly. read more
