Last night my mother and wife had dinner at one of Philadelphia's only German restaurants. I ordered the sauerbraten, my mom order Hungarian goulash, and my wife had the bratwurst platter. The sauerbraten meat not tasted odd, as if something might be fundamentally wrong with it, but it was as totally unappetizing as I could possibly imagine. My mother's goulash could, and I say this literally, indistinguishable from dog food. After I tasted it, I felt I need some kind of purgative to cleanse my system. The bratwurst were not quite as awful as the other two, but their consistency was far to "mushy" and bland. The meal was, in summary, disgusting. The ambiance of the place was dark and musty and cheap. I think I've said enough. On the bright side, the food was tellingly inexpensive, if not cheap (that raised serious questions in my mind) and the service was friendly. read more

I cannot verbalize how much I love the food at the Austrian Village. Just the thought of it causes the onset of hunger. I, an Italiano, married into a German family and find that I really love the food. Now, I am no connoisseur of German food, but the food at the AV tastes mighty close to homemade German food to me. And, my wife and her family agree. The AV is not known for its ambiance and it is a little out of the way (in Rockledge), but it is certainly worth the trip. The menu is full of classic German dishes - red cabbage, knockworst, bratwurst, etc. I usually get the sampler plate that has a little of everything on it - and then block my calendar for the rest of the day to prepare for the ensuing food coma. The beer selection is good and includes a few Hefeweizens - wheat beers - like Paulaner and Fanziskaner. You can't eat German food without some good beer! WARNING: they are cash-only! One time, I had to walk across the street to the ATM at Blockbuster video and was nearly flattened by traffic. That's what I get for never carrying cash. If you find yourself in the Northeast/Rockledge area, I would def stop in for some good German food and beer. read more

Went here for 30+ years. Then moved away and did not get back for 10 years.. till tonight. Its better then I remember! The food, decor and prices and waitress staff is the best there are. Te waitress that waited on us remember us from years ago. Oh and she has worked there for 42 years. That kind of dedication is non existent at any of the 'modern' restaurants. If you are looking for a real-time "Throwback Thursday," or retro experience on any day, then Austrian Village is worth checking out. The decor certainly evokes the 1950's or 1960's, but what will transport you is the Polka music and the septuagenarian and octogenarian dancers, some in ethnic costumes. We were surprised and charmed to see the dance floor fill with all-decked-out couples who clearly had many years' experience dancing together. At AV, I had my first taste of schnitzel (with mushrooms). It was lightly breaded and extremely crisp. The accompanying mashers and green beans were good. The Mister ate rouladen, which he noted was not as good as his mother's version and which were much larger than mom's petite rolls. The garden salads and rolls were unremarkable (not a fan of soft rolls), I would ordinarily award a "3" but the unexpected bonus of live music and cute dancing couples compel me to award a "4". read more

Me and my soon-to-be hubby stumbled across this place ...literally. We are always looking for some place new to try since we eat out a lot. We saw that it was German food, so we thought "how bad could it be?" It did not disappoint. We may not have known what everything on the menu was but it all sounded good. The best part for me was that our waitress even had a German accent. This place was very cute and authentic. I ordered their mushroom snitchel stuffed with ham and cheese, it was awesome!!! And for dessert we order their cheese cake, we saw the table next to us get it and it looked really good. The cheese cake was one of the best ( sorry hun) cheese cakes ive had, it was really smooth and creamy! This place has great German food! I love their schnitzel and never order anything else as a main dish because it's just so delicious--perfectly cooked, crispy and golden brown on the outside. For sides, they have amazing potato salad (vinegar-based) and their red cabbage is the stuff of dreams. I'm also a fan of their spaetzle. For dessert, you can't beat the apple strudel--they make it in-house and it really shows! The place is very casual and has a neighborhood feel. The staff is very kind. My husband and I try to stop in when we are visiting relatives in the area and the staff always makes a big deal about how honored they are that we come from far away to eat there. Love this place! The brats are glorious - very tasty and apparantly the whole menu is very traditional, as well. They have great beer choices and polka dancing on the weekends, which is a blast! If you don't know how to polka dance, just have a few more beers (stop before you lose the ability to count to three, which is important for polka) and you'll be ready to join in soon enough. This is the kind of place that I like showing off to my out-of-town visitors. It really highlights the cool neighborhood-y vibes that make the Philadelphia region different from most other towns. read more

I went there for lunch on Friday . It was our first time going. The people working there were nice and the bartender let me try a few samples of beer. I found a German beer that was very tasty. I returned here for dinner on a busy Saturday night, and was able to score a seat at the bar. The beer selection was fine, including the local fest beer from Victory. I had the schnitzel here, which is made with pork rather than veal. Very simple but well cooked. Could have used a touch of lemon. The spaetzel and gravy along with green beans were the sides. My friends raved about this place so much i had to check it out. I was not disappointed AND was even overwhelmed a bit by how great it was. First of all, you get there and the decor is charming for the theme. The bar offers so much variety and the staff were incredibly friendly and nice. The menu is small and completely worth every penny. It is priced so reasonably with incredible portion sizes that my mom and I split a meal and were STUFFED by the end of the evening. We happened to get there when they had the band playing. A nice live band that played everything from German to Italian to Spanish even some classic American music. There was dancing and everyone in that place was so friendly, including the customers! Someone even came up to me and offered me a cookie! I was a little leery about the food. The reason being is that German food is not known for its high flavor profile and my own palette is more Italian leaning. Imagine my surprise to find a DELICIOUS meal! You could tell everything (Maybe not the soup) was homemade. I read a comment that complained about the spaetzle and the schnitzel and may I just say I had a very different experience entirely. The schnitzel was so juicy and full of pure flavor that you could taste everything! And the spaetzle was a wonderful side. I loved the German potato salad and the cabbage was incredible! My friends and I had an incredible, wonderful time. We all had a nice glass of Riesling, and a piece of cake which was amazing! You better believe if you are looking for a fun, friendly evening out full of REAL food, this is a neighborhood CLASSIC that everyone should visit at least once. Whenever we get the urge for wursts, rouladen, schnitzel, and kraut...we head to the Village. So authentic, fresh, and delicious, like the dishes have been prepared exactly the same way for decades, so consistent! Old school neighborhood comfortable hang out. Nothing fancy but very inviting. Lively bar area with outstanding German beers on tap and in bottles, Hofbrau, Dinkelacker, Warsteiner...spirits and wine as well. Seating area is managed by watchful servers, quick and friendly. Great to hang out and watch a game on their flatscreen by the bar or enjoy an incredibly satisfying Germanic meal when you get the urge. read more

I had some somewhat huge expectations for the place because it had some good reviews. I ordered a few things off the menu and I have been disappointed. First the meal was somewhat bland. I tried adding salt but because it's already cooked, it's kinda hard to add flavor to something that was about an inch thick. Also the meat was pretty dry and the potato salad wasn't my favorite. I like the sausages but other than that I probably won't be getting anything else. The service is also preeeeeettttttttty slow. They're moving around constantly for sure but not much attention was given to me and my siblings. read more

Great place, reasonable and friendly with a bar! I've traveled to Austria and Germany and it has that atmosphere and food. We eat there regularly and they have a room for special events. My father had his eighty-fifth birthday party here last year and we are returning for his eighty-sixth! next week. The staff is so helpful and they have great bands and the place is just a lot of fun for the whole family. This place has fantastic German food and craft beer! There is so much good food that I can recommend. Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Schnitzel, etc. If you like that stuff, try the Farmer's Feast Special. I get it almost every time. The service is not the best. Whether you are seated at the bar or at a table, it takes a really long time to be served. There also isn't much of a young crowd there. I honestly have not been to Austrian Village since December of 1990. Until then, I lived in Somerton, worked in Fox Chase and ate their often. So my two stars is a menu opinion rather than a recent experience. I lived in Vienna in the early 70s and remember Schnitzel a la Holstein (cutlet with a fried egg, anchovies and caper sauce), pousta salat (Hungarian coleslaw much like Philly pepper hash), gulyas suppe (goulash soup), bueschel mit knoedel (white veal stew over a boiled dumplng) and palateschinken (hazelnut crepes with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.) I remember having the Holstein schnitzel at Austrian Village in 1990 but it is no longer listed, along with many other authentic cultural draws. Maybe since The Old Brauhaus on Oxford Ave. closed, they became complacent without the local German competition. The current menu sadly reflects more of American bar chow than the fine Austrian cuisine of the 70s and 80s.I guess like most Chinese restaurants, they have Americanized and cater to the American palate but, Ach mein Gott!, did it used to be great! read more

It's been awhile since we were at the Austrian Village. I do remember they had live entertainment (meaning oompha bands) on Friday and Saturday night. Does anyone know if they still have entertainment? Hopefully oompha bands, as it was a unique departure from the standard classic rock entertainment or lounge performers. Not that I am degrading that type of entertainment (I'm in a classic rock band myself!), but it was nice to go someplace a little different with a unique type of music to match their unique menu. read more

I was impressed. I had the stuffed schnitzel and my kid had the bratwurst. The German Potatoto Salad, and the Sauerkrat were the absolute best I have had anywhere in America. These people do German food right. I mean really. If you are into this type of cuisine you will not be disappointed. It was in line with any traditional restaurant I visited in Munich. The beers on tap are all generally awesome and in line with what you might see overseas with a few American exceptions. I like much of the décor, the crests and the murals, however some of the establishment is a little dated. The bar, however was very cool. Many of the patrons seemed older and looked to have been regulars. I could tell they were regulars by the care the waitresses took in delivering their food and in their personal interactions. The waitresses are good people and seem to care about their customers. For the most part the prices seem low. I mean I got out of there for 36 bucks, two entrees two beers and a iced tea for my kid. I would go back. It is not overly fancy, however, if it was packed like the beer halls in Munich, one would not even notice some of the dated décor, that décor would become part of the ambiance and part of the story the establishment tells. If you're looking for delicious, authentic German food this is the place! We don't visit Philly as often anymore, so it's a real treat to go to the Austrian. I live in Los Angeles and can't find a place that even comes close for good German food. I think about it all the time :) read more

The AV is one of the VERY few remaining Austrian/German restaurants worth any note in the Philadelphia area and it is a bit of a hike from downtown Philly, but oh so worth it. The Goulash is succulant, the Schnitzel is devine and the Farmer's feast could litterally kill you (because you cannot stop eating till the plate is empty and it is a large plate). Do not let the old people scare you off either they can dance most of us youngins under the table (youngins is defined as under 40 at the A.V.). The fact that they do not accept credit cards is not an issue since the prices are just down right crazy. Dinner for with a pitcher of Good german beer will usually cost less than $20 a head. read more

Saturday Night in Germany When my wife and I were in Germany several years ago, we were taken by our hosts to a great restaurant in the Mosel valley. It was just amazing how much it reminded us of the Austrian Village. In the best ways. Except the Village doesn't have eel soup nor any venison. I still can't get over our host having eel soup, but that's another story. Sadly, the Austrian Village is now one of the only authentic German/Austrian restaurants in the Philadelphia. Happily, it seems to be doing fine, although the majority of the clientele does seem to be getting a bit old. But this speaks to the authentic Germanic influence of the place, I suppose. The beer selection is not as good as I'd like, but the German beers are really fresh, and the tap is always very clean, and if authenticity in German beer means anything, it means fresh and clean. When our German friends visit the US the eschew German beers because they are not fresh and local. When you travel to Germany, you'll find you can't even get a Bavarian beer in Cologne. Beer is supposed to be fresh and local. Well, of course, we Americans love to have German beer with our German food, so the Austrian Villages limited selection but fresh and clean will do. Try the Dinkel Acker Dark. The food is pure good traditional German fare. Great schnitzel. Get it with the mushroom sauce. The farmers feast has a knuckle and lots of wursts. The sauerbraten is authentic. The sauerkraut is simply as good as available The potato salad is perfect. Try the spaetzle, and someone should order the bratwurst (this is not Johsonville Brats!). We happen to love German food, and this is the best place around here to get it. Very large portions. Reasonable prices. I know the prices have gone up some, but it's still very reasonable. It looks like a German restaurant. A bar on the side, rows of tables leading up to the dance floor. Unfortunately, dancing is now only on Saturdays, so that is when you should go. Polka and waltz with great accordion bands and lots of old Germans who will smile when you try to dance. Just follow the circular flow and you'll be fine. Many of the servers are German, and will tolerate your attempt to speak Germlish, and will give you advice on traveling to Germany. Sadness. We had just left a review of what we thought was a traditional German Restaurant when we stumbled on the Austrian Village right around the corner. A German Beer Hall atmosphere, the Warm, service, made me homesick for my German Mother. Still full from the other place, I literally forced my guest to try the Spaetlze and Red Cabbage. Both traditionally made and Seasoned. The Brats were excellent. My guest finally got to try Traditional German Food. The desserts were German and REASONABLY PRICED! Our excellent Server told us to come back again on a Saturday Night for Live German Music and Dancing. WE WILL take her advice and try some of the other German Delicacies. I ordered the meatloaf special which turned out to be a greasy mass of meat with NO seasoning and vegetables that tasted like they came straight from a can. They may cut corners on the quality of side dishes, but the main entrees are SO good and SO affordable (especially for a German place - they're so often overpriced!) that it's always a joy to eat here. I have had two experiences with the Austrian Village - neither of them good. First I made the mistake of bringing my mother and stepfather here when I first moved to the area. My stepfather is Swiss-German and makes the best spaetzle I have ever tasted. I was embarrassed at what we were served here, so much so that I wanted to crawl under the table as we ate. Both of them were good sports about it, but I vowed to never come back again. But alas, I had to as a funeral reception was held here that I attended. Iceberg lettuce only salad, chicken noodle soup with one noodle in it, possibly made from Lipton Cup-O-Noodle and the dryest schnitzel I have ever had. I guess I am spoiled from authentic German cooking, but this definitely comes nowhere close. read more

Wow. Best Reuben I have ever had and I work in Manhattan. They make their own corned beef. The cole slaw and German potato salad can't be beat. We ate at the bar and the staff was so nice, especially the bartender. The best place in the region to drink good German beer and eat good German food. Don't go there if you are in a rush or you love hotdogs. But definitely go there if you love German sausages and frankfurters, as well as schnitzels. Don't go there if you love Budweiser - go there if you love Warsteiner and Hofbrau. Period. read more

Went there for dinner, it was highly recommended and my expectations for savoring German/Austrian food was also high. What a disappointment. I have the snapper soup and them a Goulash. They were totally tasteless dishes, no salt, no species, no nothing. The German pasta was okay and the German potato salad was too acid. Perhaps I was expecting real German food and I found an Americanized version of German food. Delicious authentic German food. Place is decorated as you would expect for a true German restaurant. Our server was kind, attentive and sociable. My favorite dessert? Their apple strudel, don't skip it! No wait in a Saturday night but from what I understand they have been in the community and many many loyal customers as well as adding new ones like myself :) This is the only place in the area that's a go to for authentic German food and beer. read more

The burgers here are awesome! I know this is a German spot and burgers are not exactly German food. The bread that's served is really good too- not sure if it's homemade or not. The crabcakes & stuffed mushrooms are usually really good, but the last few visits, they have been very mustardy (a little too much mustard powder).
