    Dessert!
    Dave L.

If you look back over my reviews, there are not a ton of 5-star reviews. On my first, but not last, visit to Author's there was virtually nothing to complain about! We went to one of their limited dinner services. I had called the day before and reserved a table. When we were quickly seated at a table by the entrance, I admit being suspect of how our visit would go. The hostess asked if the table was alright and pointed out a heater by the table. Not only did it keep us warm, it made our table feel cozy. Despite it being very busy, I'd describe the restaurant as being a great place for a special date. Our waiter for the evening brought great energy. His timing was great and his knowledge of the food served was helpful. Without hesitation he suggested the Napolitana (which was phenomenal). He also made the restaurant less pretentious than I had assumed it would be and it definitely wasn't pretentious). We ordered the empanadas and beet salad as appetizers. Great picks and I'd return just to get the empanadas! As previously stated, I had the Napolitana. My dining partner has the quinoa bowl but added chicken to it. No complaints for either. We finished with two desserts suggested by our waiter. Although truly full from our meal, we polished off the tasty treats. I'm going back, just disappointed I've haven't visited it before now.

    Cafe Batido - hot

Visiting Appleton for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food scene is, and Authors Kitchen + Bar was a standout! We enjoyed it so much that we ended up eating there two mornings in a row. The Café Batido is a must-try--the caramel tastes homemade and adds the perfect touch. I ordered the Cheese Risotto Cake, and it was easily one of my top 3 breakfasts ever! On day two, I had the Huevos Rancheros, which was equally impressive. My friend tried the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the Braised Short Rib Benny--both were absolutely delicious. The restaurant has a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, and the wait staff were wonderful. I'd return to Appleton just to try some of their dinners. Highly recommend!

Both dishes were amazing, coffee hot, staff friendly. Would go back next time we are in Appleton!

We had a fantastic brunch here recently. The staff were friendly. They have a nice bar area and several tables inside. The short rib benedict was phenomenal. Great flavor and portion size. My daughter enjoyed the cheesy scrambled eggs and bacon. The salmon BAA sandwich had great flavor as well. We will be back.

This is an updated review for my first lunch outing at Author's After dining here for dinner on several occasions, I decided I needed to give their lunch menu a go. Again, I can't rave enough about their food. I decided to try out their special of the day which happened to be the braised short rib on risotto. This meal was stunning and I'm glad I tried it. Also, the drizzle of balsamic on the eggs Benedict added the perfect touch. Per usual, we tried one of each of their daily empanada flavors. These are my favorite appetizers offered at authors. Even when trying a new flavor we are never disappointed. Service is always excellent and you can never go wrong with any of their recommendations.

Do yourself a favor and get reservations to this incredible, family owned, local eatery! We were fortunate enough to snag last minute reservation for one of their rare evening dinner services. Seriously this was the highest quality, best tasting food we have experienced in the Valley. From the Bourbon Old Fashioned to start the night, to the risotto cake and empanada apps, to the melt in your mouth beef short ribs, or the handmade truffle gnocchi, all the way to the warm berry cobbler for dessert, this was a true culinary delight. Our server was prompt, friendly and even a bit comical. Every restaurant needs staff like her! (Sorry I misplaced her name, I'd love to give a public shout out because she deserved it.) The vibe is warm and inviting. Thank you for making an all to rare family dinner night so memorable. We look forward to our next dinner experience at Author's.

They have an upstairs tap room, an arcade, and a bar and restaurant downstairs. The service was all-around incredible. The employees were warm, friendly, and professional, and they seemed to know exactly how often to check in without interrupting our meal. They spaced out our drinks, appetizers, and entrees just the right amount. Our server Andrew was particularly great. We had a soda flight of their craft sodas for a super super reasonable price, and every single soda was spectacular. We're spoiled in the craft soda department by virtue of living in Wisconsin (Sprecher, Potosi, etc), but this was definitely the best craft soda we've had. Even the wacky flavors like blue raspberry were rich and flavorful--they didn't taste overwhelmingly artificial. I cannot recommend their soda enough, although I imagine their craft beer is pretty good too! We also had a delicious mocktail, which always goes a long ways in impressing us. All of our food was reasonably priced and so, so, fresh and delicious. The Bavarian pretzel with the beer cheese was heavenly!! We loved our entrees as well. Even something simple like the fries were perfectly done--fresh, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside I don't think we could have asked for a better experience. Everything we had their was top notch, and despite the number of things we ordered, our bill was not very high at all (about $50 for a mocktail, a craft soda flight and a soda pint, an appetizer and two entrees.

They were extremely friendly and accommodating and had no problem getting all of us taken care of. I kept it pretty simple and got a burger and a beer. The burger was really good and everything came out well, especially considering how many of us there were. What really stood out though was the service. One person in our group is extremely picky about how she likes her steak cooked and ended up sending it back three times. Each time they were friendly about it and genuinely seemed more concerned with getting it right for her than being annoyed about having to remake it again. For us to come in with 25 people on such short notice and still have everyone be so friendly and accommodating was really appreciated. It was a Trio Diavolo, a trio of protein with squid pasta, and a red sauce. I didn't understand that the proteins were diced bits that were stirred into the red sauce pasta. I actually thought the protein was separate from a side of pasta. It disappointed me because I generally dislike seafood in red sauce, but honestly, that wasn't their fault so I still gave them a high rating. Service was friendly and playful. Pretty efficient and seemed to like their job. It is a beautiful restaurant with a pretty amazing view, even if the water is at very sad low levels. Maybe this is natural, I've never been here before. All of the wildlife/birds really enhanced the experience.
