I had to get my car smogged and this was the cheapest place to get it done in Elk Grove, and I also had a coupon. I stopped in, they were reasonable as far as how long they took to get it done. They send your smog certificate to DMV automatically, a plus in my book. They provide a drink and a snack for free if you want it. FYI, If you have a bigger car, truck, van - they charge 10 dollars extra. I was charged 38 dollars. Still pretty cheap compared to other places that does smogs. read more

Haven't smogged here yet but talked to a guy named Benny, I think, about my last smog experience, and how they just gave me papers and said 'here you failed, fix these parts and then come back.' That's it, no explanation, but then I asked this guy a few questions, and he just shut them down with all this information for me, why it failed, what could lead to it, what they check for, why the numbers mean, this guy was awesome. He's the reason I'll be coming back to get smogged. So far 5 star service. read more

Brought my daughters 95 Lincoln in for a failed smog diagnostic at Auto Start, on a Friday morning was not ready until noon Monday. Brian called us and said it was recommended the we replace the three catalytic converters, and to clean the EGR system $1500 in work. He asked if I wanted the work done I said no I want to get a second opinion because I have no check engine light on. He is not a friendly person at all. They don't give you the information to back up the work they are telling you needs to be done they When I came to pick up the car I asked for a print out of the readings of all the test they have done. All they gave me was what they recommend , no testing results $125 for nothing. The owner Benny called latter that evening and left a message. When I called back he said to bring it in he wanted to check something else that it might not be the catalytic converters. He told me to bring it in the following Friday. I called Friday morning to confirm to bring it in and he said the smog machine was down and would call me when it was fixed. Im glad I called because I would have just brought the car in. Its been a week and Benny never called me back. That was a waste of $125. I was also told by another shop the have never seen all 3 catalytic converters go out at the same time and that if a cat was bad a check engine light would come on. Trust me you do not t to bring your car here for a diagnostic. I will update when I get a second option and see what's really wrong with my car. read more

my vehicle is worse than when i brought it in. paid top dollar and gave 2 weeks to work on it and now everything is falling apart. they seem to be decent on mechanical but electrical is a whole nother game. don't bring your vehicle if your vehicle is over heating. read more

Found Auto Start on Yelp when I was looking to get a smog check for my car. I talked to Benny and he said to bring in the car in a 1/2 hour. He asked me if I had a coupon. He said there were coupons on the Auto Start website and I could print one out there. I brought my car in and it was smog checked within 15 minutes. The total price with the coupon was $28.00. That price included the smog check and the certificate. They electronically submit to the DMV. What a deal! The staff is friendly and the waiting room was clean with free snacks and beverages. I would definitely recommend this place for smog checks. They also provide other automotive repair services. read more

Got the smog job just fine...the check service technicians were very personable and the job was done in less than an hour. However, during our conversation, I mentioned that I'd like a few other things done. They stepped up to the plate and said "yes, we can do that, and for much less than you'd pay at a dealership.". This was a week and a half and 3 phone calls later, no follow up or follow through. The basic smog service, they're good, I'd recommend them. Anything else...good luck! read more

After shopping somewhere and when I went to drive home suddenly it was hard to turn the wheel and even driving strait felt like something was wrong with my car. I pulled into a parking space and noticed that something was leaking, there had been a huge puddle where I had stopped and an even bigger puddle where I had been parked. I asked around on Facebook for recommendations of mechanics. One of my friends suggested Autobody expressions (I had been to them for body work when someone had tried to break into my car and they were excellent, but I didn't think they did engine work. However, I called them and they said they send clients that need engine work to Autostart, so I called Autostart. It was a big mistake. When I got back to my car the next morning (it was too late the day before to call someone), I noticed the ground that had been covered in fluid the day before had dried up, so what ever had leaked was water based because there wasn't any oil residue. I decided to try to drive the car and I had no problems turning the wheel or driving, so rather than wait the 3 hrs the tow company said it would take, I drove it to the mechanic's shop (approximately 7 miles away). They are located off waterman road, which is off Grant line. Just as I was approaching the Grant line exit I noticed my car thermostat was off the chart, and my engine was extremely hot. By the time I got to the shop my engine was smoking so bad. Brian at the shop began to look and see if he could see anything obvious, but once I told him the leak was water based, he immediately looked to the area where the water pump would be and it was clear that would have to be replaced. What wasn't clear was whether my engine overheating caused the damage to the water pump or whether the water pump damage caused the engine to overheat. Yes, we had to determine which came first. Additionally, they needed to determine whether the overheating may have cracked a gasket. Brian was clear we had to fix the water pump to determine whether the overheating damaged the head gasket. I told him I understood and said to go ahead with it, then I left my car there at about 11-11:30 and asked him if they would be able to tell me by the end of the day if I had cracked the head gasket. He said yes. I returned to the shop at about 3pm because I had left something I would need in my car, at that point he repeated that the water pump would need to be replaced before they could do the test, that the replacement of the pump would be about 400, and the test would be about 100. He could get the part that day but didn't have a mechanic that could replace it, so I had to wait till the next day. The next day I heard nothing from them, so I called at 12pm. Then they tell me the part they ordered is different than the one I had on my car because Ford changed the way the make it, and it would be an additional $98 dollars. I told them to go ahead, and again I asked if they were going to be able to tell my by the end of business. When I didn't hear from them by 4pm I called. He then said his mechanic would be working on it late but that he would call me once he was done. I called at 5:45 and then the mechanic finally told me that the pump had been replaced and they did the diagnostic test and ran it for an hour and there were no signs of a cracked head gasket. The next morning I went to pick up my car, then the mechanic tells me upon first start my car idols low for a short while, and did I want them to look at that, I said no. Then he tells me that even though it passed the test when he ran it the night before, it could still have a cracked head gasket because sometimes it could take a month or so to show up and that I should be looking for leaking coolant every morning. He then offered to run the test again that morning. I said I don't understand if you ran the test last night why would you need to re-run it now. When I left the shop I noticed my breaks were working a bit funny. I decided to add brake fluid and that solved the problem, then my radiator was smoking just a bit, so I looked at the reservoir, which I knew had been more than half full when I dropped it off, suddenly it was almost gone, so I filled that up. I drove to Chico and back and still have plenty of coolant in the reservoir. They should do better to keep clients informed on the progress of the vehicle, they should not charge extra for their mistake, and they should not tell clients they will have their car worked on, and then not actually work on it that day. Particularly when the client is wondering if all that is needed is a repair, or if they need to buy a new car. read more

horrible place. i would never recommend this to anyone for any reason. there has to been anywhere better then this place. they are over priced. never give a straight answer. keep your car way too long. and can't seem to fix the problem it was originally brought in for but charge you for things they say are not related to the original problem. i've taken it in 4 times for same problem. stay far away from here. read more

Great and speedy service! Brought my car in about a month ago for a smog which failed due to having cleared a code the day before and not having completed a full drive cycle. Came back today after getting some sensors replaced and they retested for a reduced rate. They even checked the systems computers to make sure they were on-line prior to smogging so I wouldn't wast my time and money again if a full drive cycle had not been completed yet. They had my '81 Toyota 4WD truck for a week and still couldn't fix it to pass smog. Hardly ever got a callback on the status of my truck, had to do all the calling myself. Including their $120 diagnosis, I had to pay an additional $242 to get the truck back from them so I could take it to another shop that got the truck to pass smog in 3 hrs.
