Same day response and repair during -5F weather with a crippling snow storm, days before Christmas, we're sure to make me rate Autopia 4 stars. But I'm learning The Autopia crews performance is common for this repair shop. So Stan and the crew push my rating to five stars. Day of service, my daughter called to report her older Buick was struggling to accelerate and the service light was blinking during her 6:45 am commute from Home near the U to Richfield. We agreed she'd attempt to make it to Autopia, a shop she's used and she and her sister trust. She called first, but no answer. Secretly, I thought "this is going to be a nightmare". Of course, I remained skeptical. We stuck with the plan to meet at Autopia. Could my daughters" "Stan" and my daughters" go to auto service shop for years, really be that responsive. Major snow storm, located near Uptown/Kenwood, roads still need to be plowed. Even if Autopia had a rack open, would the price be close to reasonably priced in such an emergency situation? Upon arrival, my daughter shared Stan called her back while she was driving. She hadn't left a message but Stan saw the missed call. . When I met Stan, he not only addressed my daughter as his customer, but connected us with daughter #2, his original customer from our family. I thought that level of service was dead. Later that morning, Stan called to report the car needed the mouse nest removed from engine area, gnawed wires replaced and a major tune up (the tune up was expected as it's been 90K miles). Of course I'd rather not part with $000 of dollars during the holiday season. Yet the price was within expectations (and in line with on-line repair estimators). As Stan predicted, the repair was completed on time. The car is running fine. Stress minimized. I now understand why my daughters insist on going to Stan anytime their vehicles need a repair. This Dad is grateful there are human beings like Stan out there who are genuinely interested in their customers and provide solid car repair services, at market rates. Recently had a good experience with fixing windshield wipers here so, I thought it might be a good place to get a detail of my car done, since it was a service that they advertise. Do not get your car detailed here. There is no detail involved. They vacuumed my car and that was about it. Did not take the seats out, barely steamed carpets, didn't touch the headliner, found old jelly beans and a spoon in the side pockets, stains not removed, inner windows greasy still, just horrible work in general. Jump online and search car detailing and you'll understand. I paid upwards of $200 bucks for a carwash my nephew could have done for $20. read more

Want to throw a shout out to Stan and Autopia here in Uptown off of 24th and Hennepin Ave. I had gone there before for an oil change and he had suggested to monitor my serpentine belt. At that time he quoted me $119. This past week I noticed when I would start my car, that it was the belt making a louder start noise. So I called Stan and he remembered me and said, yeah bring it in. I'll take care of it. Did not think they would be open given the COVID19. Stan replaced my Pontiac Vibe serpentine belt and called me my car was ready. Not only did Stan give me a better deal than most (I had done some price shopping prior), he me the best price and even through in a car wash. Thanks Stan, my car runs like new again and you didn't have to wash it, but you did. You went way beyond the extra mile and I so appreciate your honesty. On January 5th, they improperly replaced my break pads. Later that week the caliper dislodged causing my breaks to malfunction while merging onto hwy 61. Damage was caused to other parts of my car, and a different mechanic stated that i was lucky. After exchanging emails, calls, photos, receipts, they agreed it was their fault. Now it has been 2+ weeks and they refuse to answer my calls or return my messages. They seemed nice and I assumed honest, but unless they make this right, I highly recommend going someplace else. read more

Friendly, honest neighborhood shop. I've been visiting Autopia regularly over the last year for service. The owner Stan always recognizes me as a customer as he works the front desk. My typical visits are for an oil change or routine maintenance, but once I thought I had a busted tire and the Autotopia team was able to inexpensively patch it easily saving me a good chunk of change. Highly recommend giving Stan and the team a visit. I trust that my car is in good hands. read more

I've been using Autopia for a couple of years now for my full synthetic oil change. I've always been able to use a Groupon for the services and I never receive any hassle from the company for doing so (as often the case with business that use Groupons, I'll never understand that). They offer appointments as late at 4:30 pm on weekdays and also have fairly flexible Saturday availability as well. I appreciate that when I pick up my car they explain the services and are always quite transparent. read more

Do not use these guys for repair or storage. My car was stored there for the winter, at some point they drove (mileage was over when I stored), and they damaged my front fender, and wheel. They attempted to paint the front fender, this was obvious due to paint bubbling and severe orange peel. They also charged my credit card twice without my permission, they were supposed to call for card to charge. I was also overcharged for the repair they did (I was quoted a price before repair). I'm filing a complaint with the Attorney General's office. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! read more

I brought my vehicle in for an overheating concern and Autopia was able to diagnose it within 1-2 hours, and then completely fix it the same day. The price was fair and lower than expected for a new radiator. Great, friendly communication throughout the whole process, and I only dealt with one person so I never had to repeat the issue to someone new. The guy working at the front desk was very nice and friendly. I appreciated he wore a face mask for covid-19 before the mayor's city-wide order was put in place. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Wish i could rate this place zero stars... I called to have Autopia tow my car. I was quoted 70 dollars for the tow (which was a half mile away) and after the tow, they charged me 120!!! Then they charged me another 120 just to look at my car... I told them i needed a few days to think about fixing it due to the high price i was quoted (750+) on top of the tow and looking at it. My car was towed in on a Saturday morning and they didnt look at it till Monday, not telling me that they tack on 35 dollars per day for every day they have it! So by the time i was ready to have another mechanic look at it, they had a bill for me for over 350 dollars!!!! This place is truly made up of scam artists and thieves... Upsale seems the by word here. Yes I took in a good (loss leader) oil change & tire rotation offer. No long wait but I did have an appointment and there is a no res drive thru right across the street. Upon picking up my car, with no tire rotation done besides driving it to the lot! I was given a $1.400 est! This car was worth maybe 2 grand. I paid for my oil change and took the estimate to my regular mechanic. He wisely hid the estimate from his employees to see how they compared. Yep over 1/2 was un-necessary bill padding and much could easy wait. I have been going to Autopia for the last several years on and off. The first few times I went there they offered competitive rates, even if they did try to get me to spend money on things I thought were unnecessary. But in the last few months I have had two really bad experiences - and I will not be going back. First, they misdiagnosed an issue and then tried to charge me a ton to get it fixed again, without offering to give me credit for the money I had already spent "fixing it" the first time (they eventually gave me credit, but didn't apologize for screwing it up). Next, they tried to price gouge me when I got my car towed there and it wasn't drivable. At first I trusted them and told them to go ahead and do the work, but on the advice of some friends I later checked around. They were charging me $950 for something that should have been ~$500-550. Don't go here. I brought my car in for a 90,000 mile check up - basically, a diagnostic of what should be done to keep it in good stead. I asked them to pay special attention to the brakes, since my last inspection (3 months prior) had mentioned that pads were low. The two sales guys spit back at me ALL of the possible things I could do at 90k, which would cost $3,000+. When I asked about the brakes, they said all 4 were fine. When I asked them to confirm that (given my concerns and all), they returned and said I needed 4 full pads and rotor replacements ($700+), and that I should do that ASAP because it's winter and simply not safe to drive my car. When I picked up my car, I asked for an itemized estimate and their professional opinion on what I should prioritize since $3,700+ in work isn't something I can afford immediately. The said they couldn't do that since they don't give estimates. Let me repeat: THEY DON'T GIVE ESTIMATES. I paid them $132 for an inspection, and they expected me to sign up for $3,700+ (ballpark figure, of course) in repairs. They don't give estimates because "something might change", which is, DUH, the definition of an estimate. I can't help feeling like I was treated like an idiot because I'm a young female with a nice car. They belittled me while describing the repairs they wanted me to pay for ("really? you don't hear that noise? it's very loud") and threw a "complimentary" car wash at me when I was obviously annoyed. There was a helpful saleslady who worked at Autopia 6 months ago, but she's no longer there. This story ends with my calling another shop, describing what happened, and that person guessing instantly that I went to Autopia. I spent $300 on repairs at that shop (with a free inspection and estimate), my brakes are fine, my car is safe, and these people suck. read more

How does this place keep getting customers? Every online review most rate it poorly!!! I took my truck in for a routine job. Easy enough for any tech to do. I was called 3 times each saying it's going to be more money. Finally i said. Okay stop the job!!! I'll take it someplace else!! They refused saying it was in pieces. Wow. Finally after 9 days it was ready. (Had to rent a car). It was a shocking amount I could have put the money down for a brand new truck!! Update: I've made no progress. The issue has now been unresolved for a month. Please don't waste your time with this shop. These guys are absolutely untrustworthy. I'm definitely not being paid to say this and I think I've only left one other review ever. They told me my foreign car needed nearly $2000 worth of maintenance after a standard checkup. Since I don't know much about cars, I agreed to pay so I could have my car back. After doing some research and consulting with another local shop, it was clear these guys were just straight up dishonest. And now, after calling and going there in person for an explanation, the "manager" won't call me back. It's been over two weeks. No phone call! I can't even get an explanation for the charges and why another company would disagree to the point of suggesting I say something. They routinely show up in City Pages or other local online publications as a "best of" or "most trustworthy". It's no longer true. I'd agree with another reviewer and suggest Amigo on 36th and Lyndale. They've been great with my wife's car. read more

Don't ever go to Autopia. Had a coupon for an oil change, tire rotation, vacuum, and full diagnostic for like $35. They didn't do the tire rotation or vacuum. And of course, their diagnostic revealed that my car needed $3500 of repairs. Told them no and on my way out, I mentioned to a woman grabbing a pizza next door how awful the place was and she agreed and shared an anecdote of how her husband took his car there and they repaired a bunch of things without asking and tried to make him pay for it. I also took my car to my regular mechanic who charged me $500 for what was listed on Autopia's invoice for $2000. Hard to believe this place is still in business. read more

Dave called to address my concerns and earn my confidence back in his business. He was unbelievably sincere, candid, and professional. Of all the reviews, negative or positive, this was the first time I've actually had a representative reach out to me. This reach out showed that he was a truly observant and caring businessman. This is a rare quality in today's market. After profusely apologizing for my disappointing experience, he offered me a free oil change in order to demonstrate that he cares about his customer's satisfaction. I took my car in for an oil change. Steven at the front desk said it would take two hours minimum. I thought that was odd since I can do it in my fathers shop in 30 minutes (My parents live far from the cities so it is no longer worth doing it myself). I dismissed it as I thought maybe they were busy (at 7:30am)... However, after I got it back, the clutch no longer worked like it had when I brought it in. It was now slipping. I brought it back in and they said they would check it out for a fee of course. I drive this car very delicately. The clutch was fine before I brought it to them and now it's worn out. There is no explanation for how that happened within the two hours they had my car. The oil change was fine and they failed to vacuum the inside like they had said, but the outside and windows were washed. Overall a terrible experience and I wouldn't trust them with my car and will share this experience with all my Minneapolis friends to warn them. read more

They did the job after my car was towed there, but damn I should've been more careful about where I went (I had to pick a place quick since my regular place was booked full for the holiday weekend) - they way overcharged me and didn't finish it up carefully. Got a second opinion at a better place close to where I live, and even they thought I was robbed. I am surprised to see all the negative reviews of Autopia... I have been taking my car there consistently for seven years and only have had good experiences. 1) After a very frustrating and expensive multi-month "trial and error"-style guessing game at Borton Volvo's service, I decided to try Autopia, which is right in my neighborhood. They listened to what I had to say and provided a thoughtful plan for how to resolve the issue, saving me time, money, and stress. 2) As many others have noted, they provide top-notch customer service and have always been very good at talking through their various service recommendations, the implications, and the top priorities with me. They allow me to decide which work to do and which to defer and keep a record of recommendations to help prioritize in the future. Plus, they have chocolate and coffee in the waiting area. 3) In preparing for a cross-country move, I decided to sell my 2002 Volvo. I took it in to get serviced prior to putting it up for sale to make sure it was in the best condition possible. I explained my goals for the service and asked for feedback on my car's overall condition and performance. Because of Autopia's thoughtful care over the years, I was able to sell my vehicle for over Kelly Blue Book value in only a week! Thank you, Autopia! Have been going to this place for the last couple of years. I have also frequented other shops in Uptown and can say this place is honest and customer oriented as it gets. They are always upfront with all charges and will not do any work before getting your approval. Like any other business they will offer up sell repairs/maintenance - but they always break it down to must have/need/nice to have. Instead of complaining like the rest of reviewers on here, maybe you should seek to understand better what maintenance should be done. The same people who complain about high maintenance costs and declines them then turn around and complain when the repair cost is now going to be twice of the maintenance cost. Do yourself a favor and skip these corporate uptown hustlers. I had the dealer of all places tell me that the work Autopia wanted to do on my car was completely unnecessary. This place is a scam, and I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it. They wanted me to pay $1,400 to replace 2 suspension components that the dealer wanted to charge me $650 for. No joke. Don't be fooled by the nice staff at the front desk. These mechanics must be working on commission. Their business model seems to be to overcharge on unnecessary work, maybe not even do the work, and then when you call them out they give you a little gift certificate that's good for labor only and not parts or shop supplies. Not trustworthy!! Refused to honor a purchased coupon- paid $55 for a variety of coupons that "never expire" about 15 years ago for free/reduced oil changes and more. Had hardly used any of the coupons because the coupon card was misplaced. The company said that it was issued by the prior owner of the business and refused to honor it. When you purchase a business, you buy both assets and liabilities. This is the same as a gift certificate in my view and speaks to how they treat their customers. I won't be returning. Legitimate warning: Do not take your car here. They don't know how the tire pressure monitoring system in cars works (the lights that warn you if your tires are low and which one) and will screw it up on your car. Either that or they're screwing it up knowingly but being lazy and hoping you won't notice. I took my car here and had my tires rotated. I kept wondering why the tire pressure monitors were reading low on the wrong tires and then I figured out why. Originally when I took my car there one was broken and reading --. After it read -- on the same tire... I figure whatever, maybe they didn't get around to rotating them, I didn't really need them rotated, it was a cheap groupon, no big deal. Then I went back and asked them to replace the broken monitor, which read right front: --. So they replaced the right front monitor. When I left two tires were not working. One read 00 and the other --. The shop owner or manager assured me that the system can be a bit goofy and that it would reset and read after a few drives. Well that didn't happen. So I did my own research and found that the monitor system works like this. The pressure sensors send out a signal, and the computer picks them up. They thing is the computer can't sense which tires where. You have to manually program which monitor is where. Well that made it all clear. That's why when I left the tires were reading the same, it wasn't that they didn't rotate the tires, it was that they just hadn't re-paired the sensors to the right location in the system. Well herein lies the problem. Because they didn't pair it correctly I replaced a working sensor, they threw out my working sensor, and I still had a broken sensor. I thought maybe I'd get lucky and they'd still have the part and it could be swapped out. I called... No such luck, didn't even get to ask. I called to explain it and half way through explaining what I thought had happened and why (explaining how the system working even thought they're an auto shop and I figured he'd know but just making sure we were on the same page with what happened) he stated angrily, even though I had been very pleasant the entire conversation hoping it would help me get cooperation and a good solution, "I have to go I'll call you back" and hung up the phone. He called me back and tried to tell me that rotating the tires wouldn't effect the reading. That you don't need to repair them when you rotate them. I explained again that no, you do have to, thinking maybe he just honestly didn't know, even though that should be an area of expertise... you know being an auto shop and all. He's response being "you paid for a $30 oil change and tire rotation, what do you expect. We've never had a complaint like this before." Well most people wouldn't realize that this is going on. I wouldn't have if I didn't have a broken sensor and just paid $125 to replace a working one. I took my car in with a functional tire pressure monitoring system and left with it mismatched and screwed up. You shouldn't leave an auto shop with you car malfunctioning. And if you do they should take accountability. I of course mentioned that to which he states, "I don't know what you want me to do about it. You bring me your car which clearly has a lot of issues, we replaced the monitor you told us to, I can't help you I have to go." His tone changed from beginning to end. To not knowing how it worked to saying it wasn't their responsibility. Either they don't know what they're doing or they do cruddy work and lie about it. Either way disgusting. Didn't even attempt to right their wrong it take ownership. I would never recommend you go here. read more

Took my car here for an oil change (with complimentary car cleaning). After an hour and a half I told them I had to leave and they said they hadn't had a chance to clean my car yet... Get in my car and there's still ice and snow on it and the "miles to service" setting wasn't reset. Which makes me wonder if my car was even serviced at all... I took it back to get it cleaned (twenty minutes out of my way) and they didn't even vacuum the back seats or offer any apology for the inconvenience. I had to remove my vehicle from here and bring it to a competent mechanic. My head gasket was bad and I told them that's what I thought it was. They were more interested in breaking my bank than properly troubleshooting the problem. For example, I knew due to the Check Engine Light which cylinder was misfiring. They wanted to replace all spark plugs and ignition coils. A quick 10 minute search on the internet made me realize there is a much more efficient way to troubleshoot this. They know how to change an air filter, but that's about all I would trust them doing! read more

my husband and i had my VW serviced several times off of a casual recommendation, and i really wish i had read the yelp reviews before giving them my business. BUT, im seeing them now and totally going to agree. these guys sneak every chance to nickel and dime you. long story short- the front desk people are suuper nice, but it misrepresents the shop completely. we had a few oil changes here, which led in to "obvious repairs" recommended on being done. i knew there was a few things on my car acting weird, and the price was high but understandable for all they had to do, so we had them "fix" everything. can i have a moment now to hit myself on the forehead and say "Stupid! stupid! stupid!" the car ran better, everything was fine, next time we brought it in for an oil change, suspiciously ALL of these issues had magically arisen with my car, as if the $2,000 i gave them did absolutely nothing (please, i have an older car, it's been dented and rusted, VW's are fickle, but...it's not a total P.O.S yet). we just told them we'd keep it in consideration (AKA start looking for second opinions) but, what made them lose my business was when i had my headlight burn out. my husband was working out of state, and it's not like im feeble but im awful when it comes to cars. seriously, deer in headlights clueless. (but punny!) i brought it to autopia to have it changed, and im SO glad i reviewed my service agreement before i signed it- they wanted to charge me almost $90 to change my headlight. seriously??! i flat out refused, but their reason was because "VW's are hard to access, and we need to take all of this out before we do this, and then....blah blah", and also that they needed to charge me for the time it takes (Which is apparently an hour?) i know these cars are a little more challenging to work on, i've been told that many times, but my husband has changed my car's lightbulbs before in our garage, for less than $20 and in like 10 min. i've gone to valvoline and had an oil change AND a taillight replaced in 30 minutes for around $50 ( i just wanted to support more local business) . it's just ridiculous, i know it's not that hard, i just didn't want to do it myself. i complained, they knocked it down to $50 which i agreed on but was super annoyed about. anyways, my husband and i were lazy with price comparison and second opinions, and they totally ate it up....for a few months at least. it was totally our fault, but lesson learned. i feel really awful writing a bad review, but this place really warrants one. if it were just 1 off time, i'd overlook it no problem, but there were numerous. if you have auto-body issues, go to oscar's in whittier, and honest-1 for oil changes. read more

I was lead to Autopia by a co-workers recommendation who lived in the neighborhood. After recently moving into the neigborhood myself I decided to give Autopia a try. I had recently purchased a used SUV from a private party two months prior and was told that the belt needed replacing. I decided to give them a try on my co-workers recommendation. I also worked with Dave as a few post below noted and thought he was great to work with throughout the process until I got the call of what "needed" to be done to my SUV. On top of the belt needing to be replaced(which I knew going in), Autopia came up with $2k+ more of work that they stated should be done sooner than later including hoses, struts and your normal plugs & filters. Knowing the private party that I bought the car from took good care of the SUV previous, I inquired to see where they got it serviced. I was able to get my hands on the servicing history for the past 5 years and the most recent item in April was the belt. Long story short, I couldn't afford to spend $2,500 to get my car repaired. I decided to get a second opinon at the place it was previously serviced. The service dealer did a full inspection and only noted one small item that need to be fixed but mentioned that it was nothing major. I was sick to my stomach thinking that I needed to put $2,500 into a car I recently purchased. In conclusion, it pays to get a second opinion. Although Dave was professional, helpful and cordial throughout the day I had my car in the shop I would not recommend Autopia unless it was for a normal oil change. And Dave I do not need a phone call or a free oil change as you offered Jon a couple months ago. You have lost a potential new customer and I also told my co-worker to not give out Autopia recommendations anymore. read more

I took my car to them because the check-engine light was on. I agreed to a $59 fee for them to look at it. They called me a few hours later with an estimate of ~$4000 in repairs (the car was worth ~$2000). I was very clear this was unacceptable, and I just wanted a bandaid on the expensive problems. The check engine code was not serious (emissions), but they neglected to turn it off. They did nothing mechanical to the car, and charged me over $100 for the visit. They did vacuum the the front two seats, and clean the windshield of the car, but that wasn't the service I needed. Despite their alarming diagnosis on my car, it is running fine thousands of miles later. read more

Not horrible, but I won't be going back. I took my Honda Pilot here when the check engine light came on and it was running sluggish. The people here were nice and helpful, but the price I was quoted on the phone for inspection ($60) wasn't what I was charged ($110). They said I'd need to pay $1500 to get my car running again... to replace all my fuel injectors. I took it for a second opinion to a Honda dealer to find out that it was the wire connecting the fuel injectors that was bad NOT the fuel injectors. This ended up costing me $200, instead of $1500 at Autopia, which wouldn't have even fixed the problem. Autpoia's diagnosis wasn't wrong, they just didn't correctly identify the problem. I don't think they are dishonest or unreasonable. They were just simply wrong about my car... and it almost cost me $1500. I can't afford that type of honest mistake, so I will not be returning. read more

Rip off. Total rip off. I brought my new Mazda in to have some work done - and they used fear tactics to scare me into getting additional work done. The next time I was at the dealer, they told me that the maintenance schedule didn't require ANY of this work to be done. I too feel like a sucker. I talked to the manager who gave me a crumby labor certificate. Yeah right, like I'll ever take my car in to this joke of a business again. Steer clear of these money-hungry thieves. I had to take the car BACK to get their work done right. Even then, the dealer had to fix their horrible workmanship. Screws were loose, the bumper was scuffed and they almost stole my mats. I'm lucky I noticed they were missing or I would have never seen them again. Highway robbery seems apt here. Their brand new part failed on me. They seem to prey on unsuspecting uptown youth, who aren't knowledgeable about their vehicles. Very sad and disappointing storefront for what I believe to be a criminal operation. I agree - they must be paid on commission. DO NOT TRUST THESE THIEVES WITH YOUR CAR, NO MATTER WHAT. TRUST ME. THEY'RE THE WORST. read more
