I brought my vehicle in to have service. A new transmission new front end and suspension. I was advised and told that I needed to pay up front. And this was a judgment call. Because there are family owned businesses, and they were judging me. I am a mixed-race American. Who has been judged many times but to be judged by a local service provider. Who was going to be working on my vehicle is an outrage. The service center states that they will charge you half up front for any service that is to be done so that they can purchase the parts ahead of time. Had two tires replaced here - they did not move the tire pressure sensors back into the correct wheels after insisting they rotate the front tires to the back, so now my car registers the front wheels as the back and vice versa. They also said they had to replace the tie rods which was supposed to fix a squeaking when turning which never went away so I am not convinced they even did anything. Due to the tie rods being replaced I had to pay for an alignment, which is normal. Lo and behold, a few months later my car is vibrating on the freeway and I have to pay for another balancing and alignment elsewhere. On top of it all, I am not one to be mad about quick service even at the expense of friendly customer service. However, they were straight up rude. They said I had to get xyz replaced, and when I said I had to think about it, they asked, "Why?". Why do you think? I am a college student, I don't have several thousand dollars to shell out on command for repairs, give me a second to think. read more

My kids live near here as students at UofM. They are the closest repair place; so they ended up having them look at a problem. This repair shop tried to bully them into getting unnecessary work immediately and warned them not to drive back home because the car wasn't safe. Fortunately they came home, and the actually necessary repair was literally hundreds of dollars less than the unnecessary one quoted. And the car had been perfectly safe to drive! read more

For food, I'm all about being spontaneous and trying out the undiscovered gems. But when it comes to car care, a Yelp snob like me requires at least 30 reviewers and 4 star ratings for a place to be considered as acceptable for me to depend the life of my car on. I admit that University Service fell out of my radar at first. But when the weather is as unforgiving as it has been (gotta love the subzero degrees, eh?), I didn't have a lot of options since my two front tires decided to give up their short-lived yet tormented lives in the parking lot of Target. I called University Service to see if I could get my flats fixed within the next 3 hours and was told that it'd be finished within an hour if I took it in within the next 15 minutes. After fishtailing my way to the place, I grabbed a hot cup of coffee and waited for the service to be done inside their small store. About half an hour later, I was told that I'd have to change both of my front tires. I personally wanted Hankook all-weather tires, but since they only carried Coopers, I had no choice but to pitch out $99 a pop. With another hour passed by afterwards, my car was ready to go. Overall, my tab came out to be around $269. I'm not sure how other places charge for tire changing services, but I'd say that it's a pretty decent deal since the mechanics there had to work in the freezing condition. Overall, not too shabby for a relatively quick service. I might consider returning there for an oil change again in the future. read more

Dan is the man! I have been coming here for 2 years now and every time I go I have become accustomed to expect nothing less than great service and courtesy from Dan and the other workers. He truly understands that people have lives and schedules outside of just getting their oil changed. He goes out of his way to make sure you are accommodated. Because they are open until 10:00 makes it so easy to work things around your schedule. They make sure to explain everything that is going on and are as honest as they come. It really takes the headache out of going to a service center. I was once having issues with my tires getting balanced. I had gone to a Firestone to get new tires and they didn't balance them correctly. I then went to my local Jeep dealership to have them rebalance them and still my car was shaking. I became sick of going to the chain service shops and thought I would try out University Service. When I got there I told Dan what had happened with the two dealerships before and he said he will personally check to make sure that his guys balanced my tires correctly! read more

Honest mechanic with fair pricing and will always help you understand what's being fixed. I've been coming to University Service ever since I moved to Minneapolis in 2013. One of the things I like most about it is that they're open until 10 at night during the week. There is nothing more annoying than having to leave work early in order to drop off or pick up your car, and they're the only place I know of that solves this problem. Their turnaround is super fast and they'll always try and save you money when they can. They're located right on the University campus, so it would probably be pretty easy for them to rip off a bunch of young adults who wouldn't know any better. I can honestly say though that I've always seen them treat everyone with total respect and do their best to educate their customers. If you get the chance, talk with Jason. Pretty sure he's the owner and is the nicest guy ever. He'll always ask how your day is going and generally seems to actually care. A tip I would say is to walk across the street to Blue Door Pub and grab a burger and drink, if you're getting something quick done. Under 4 dollars for a happy hour pint if I remember correctly too. Just let them know you'll be nearby and they should have it finished in no time. read more

I won't dwell on past experiences years ago but keep it in the present. Now that the gas pumps have been updated replacing the noisy beeping monsters this is a quick serve efficient place. Typical small convenience items inside and you either have to pay in advance or swipe a card at the pump. Air hose on the side and a repair service. This place caters to the growing student population in the area. It's been years since I've had service done here as I have my place to go now so I can't comment on that. The service bays do appear to be busy all the time so it at least looks like there are repeat customers. read more

DONT GO HERE (unless you want to throw away money.) I came here first as it was really close to where I live. I came in to do a overall look over of my car. When I came back, they said that I would need a $700 complete brake job. Their quote included $500 in parts. After this exorbitant quote, I decided to take my car elsewhere for a second and third opinion. Both said that I only needed pads. I ended up paying $125 for the fix and even tipped $50 for their trouble. In conclusion, this is the second time University Service has over quoted me. The first time was with my old Buick and a Powersteering problem. They prey on college students and young people who do not know much about cars. Although, I do admit the free quotes are nice. UPDATE: University Service tracked me down and called me about my previous review and how I said that they "were just trying to get money out of students' pockets." I guess they at least care about their public opinion. Note to University Service: This review is not coming down no matter how much you try calling me and telling me to do so. Ta-ta for now. What happens to me after 9 inches of snow? My windshield wipers decide they don't want to work anymore. I called in to set up an appointment as this shop was highly recommended by a co-worker. They were willing and able to get me in the next day. Yay. I could go down the street and have lunch at Crescent Moon (yum!) while they worked on my beast. 1.5 hours later they call to tell me the wiper transmission needs to be replaced. Ugh, worse case scenario and a few hundred dollars. Pros: - Very friendly staff, Jason was awesome to work with. - Pricing seems reasonable - Free wi-fi - A vehicle to use to run errands if they just need your car for a couple of hours - Longer weekday hours 8am - 10pm Con: - They indicated a 2 hour window repair, it took nearly 4 hours - at the end of the two hours they indicated the wiper arm was rusted. That discovery should have been known about before the 2 hour mark. - No weekend availability (maybe not a con but a tradeoff for the longer weekday hours) I do need new brakes in the next couple of months and will be returning to have them complete here. read more

Amazing quick service. Tire fixed, oil changed, radio fixed, wheel lug nut fixed all in record time. My car was picked up by their tow truck after I had a flat tire in the freezing cold without a spare tire the quick response really impressed me. I was having an issue with my car window in that there was a gap somewhere between the window and weatherstripping even though the window was able to roll up and down just fine. I strolled in on a Sunday I believe and this was one of the few places even open. They were able to see me right away and stated flat out that they charge a minimum of $75 to take a look. If any parts need to be ordered and related labor needs to be performed, that costs extra and is not included. I decided to let them have a look and luckily they were able to address the issue, though they couldn't make promises that the weatherstripping problem might crop up again. However, they managed to remove the door panel and remove some screws that were in there and they also tightened up some bolts that were loose. They also made sure the window was properly in place. In the meantime, I was hanging out at a pretty legit coffeeshop nearby that was full of UofM students. It's called Black Coffee & Waffle bar. Before I could even finish my coffee, Uni Service called me saying the car was ready. Since I was just settling in the coffee shop and was getting into a relaxing rhythm, I asked them to rotate the tires - it was actually about time for that to get done but I really just didn't feel like leaving the coffee shop at that moment. They said no problem and to return in 30 mins. Everything was carried out rather seamlessly. The damage in total came out to $100 but I find that reasonable for the problem they addressed and especially their prompt and professional service. read more

On our way out of town for my son's state baseball tournament, we blew a tire. University Service happen to be the closest on a late Friday afternoon. We inquired about 2 new tires and were given an estimate of 2-3 hours and $402. We discussed how we had a 90 minute drive ahead of us and were hoping to see at least part of the baseball game. With no choice, we agreed and headed to the Blue Door Pub (their suggestion while we wait.) We returned to the service station after great service and a great meal, and saw our vehicle had been moved. To our excitement, it had two new tires on it! They had driven to pick up the tires instead of waiting for the courier. They were amazing and so kind to us. In less than 60 minutes, we were on our way to Rochester. We were extremely impressed with the service we received and the kindness we were shown. We live 45 north of the station and will be heading that way for any future tire needs. Worth. Every. Penny. Brought my car to University Service due to the window coming off the track and dropping into the car door. It should have been a simple fix, taking about 10 minutes to take the panel off the door and looking to see if the window regulator was broken. They said it would take an hour to two hours, even though I made an appointment. I asked them if they would be able to try to just get the window up without taking off the door panel. The guy I talked to said he would be right back, and I'm that time he moved my car out of the garage. When he came back he handed me my keys and said he wouldn't be able to help me. The staff was extremely rude, and if I treated people like that where I work I would be fired on the spot. Please consider any other place before going here, there are so many other auto repair places in the area where the staff is much friendlier and get the job done for less. read more

The place is convenient, I'll give you that. However, their knowledge about cars and parts quality are questionable. They do charge a hefty "diagonstic fee", but then end up doing a bad, at best a mediocre job. For my case, they simply put in a wrong specification sensor in my car! I mean, how hard can it be to go to an auto parts website and punch in my car's model/year? Anyway, they also don't consult you on the parts they are using, i.e. whether you want an OEM part or whatever aftermarket stuff they are providing. All in all, I had to take my car to a different service center later on to fix this blunder. read more

I had a great experience here. I'd taken my 2001 Accord to the Honda dealership because it was overheating - they told me that to even do a diagnostic to find out what was wrong, it would cost me $64. So, I went to Jason at University Service on a friend's recommendation. He charged $40 for the diagnostic and when he determined I needed a new radiator, credited the $40 to the repair costs. I asked Honda what they would charge for a new radiator - they quoted me $300 over what University Service did! I dropped my car off at 5:00 pm and had it back by 2:00 the following afternoon, and my final cost was $4 over the estimate. Jason did not talk down to me or give me that "woman-in-a-car-place" feeling that I've had so many other places. I am a convert - I will ALWAYS get my car serviced here from now on! read more

Took my car in for an oil change and asked them to check my front left wheel. Jason is great to work with and very , professional, belongs in a better company. Seems too ethical to work in this place. Dan (the manager) came out to tell me I needed $760 in brake work done. Sorry dude, my car only has 27k miles on it. I left there and bought pads at Brake & Equipment for $46, had my brother do them in 30 min. They won't be getting my $ anymore. I will not recommend. read more

I came here to get my headlight bulb replaced. When I arrived I was quoted $150, and the mechanic said it would take 8 hours for my car to be done. I asked him to explain how installing a quick, $10 part costs $150, and he couldn't give a good answer. I went down the street to Gorsche and explained my problem, and the mechanic dropped everything he was doing and replaced my headlight on the spot. Don't waste your time or money with the crooks, and just go down the street. read more

The business came under new ownership earlier this year so I went back to check it out again. This time, the service was excellent and I was presented with estimates to get everything else fixed on my car when I came back to pick it up after my oil change and they let me know everything they had to fill or fix. I brought my car here because I've heard several good things about University Service, but was incredibly disappointed. Even though I'm a young female who doesn't know much about cars, I do know when I need to go elsewhere. My muffler was loud one day, so I brought my car to University Service to get a quote and figure exactly what was wrong. I was told that it would cost over $400 to 'do the job right,' and in addition needed several other things done to my car -- including new brakes. Luckily the price tag drove me to get a second opinion and I ended up getting my car fixed for $96 elsewhere (this included parts and labor). Also, the new mechanic told me that it was obvious that University Service didn't even take my tires off when they determined that I 'needed' new brakes. I have never written a Yelp review before because I generally chalk a bad experience up to the fact that we're all human and have bad days, but I do feel that University Service made an honest attempt at taking advantage of me for profit. read more
