Our check engine light came on and we have an extended warranty so we took it to the shop that was…read morerecommended by our warranty. Things started getting weird when the shop said they would call and they didn't. This happened 3 times. Then they said that they found work that needed to be done. They told us things were really bad, but provided no misfire codes they just said it was not running well. We had not noticed that it was not running well. Then he said that our catalytic converters were misfiring like a "mofo". He asked one of the techs to run the codes and this took over an hour. They could not find our keys. I offered to let them use our other set to get the codes for us. Then Lee was very unprofessional and was talking about how he was going to have to have a conversation with another tech who they suspected locked them in the tool box. He showed us the computer and it said that the catalytic converters were bad and misfiring. When he showed us the computer it said "(000 misfires)". Meanwhile the mechanic found that the transmission was leaking and that was approved by the warranty. Later in the week while they were working on that they found some other issues. While they were waiting for the warranty's answer they put the transmission back in and charged us for 3 hours of labor. Upon talking to the warranty company we found out that they approved to pay for those 3 hours as well so they were double charging. The warranty decided to cover it to cover us as their customer. we were later charged $268 in admin fees for 4 emails between the owner and the warranty company. The warranty company sent us time stamps on that conversation and it did not take all day like they said it did. On top of an admin fee and double charging we were charged $292.80 for them to clean the mud off the bottom of our truck, bolts "that were no longer usable", lines and fasteners, and removing dirt so the bolts would be flush. They also charged us $20 per bottle of cleaning supplies and they cleaned it using break cleaner, which is like $4. They said they gave us a discount, but their numbers were never matching up. It also took them 4 hours to run the numbers. We were told the vehicle would be done at noon and we called a little after noon to get an update. They told us they were still crunching numbers and taking the truck for a long test drive and it could be picked up in about 45 minutes. Over the course of the test drives while they had our truck they used close to a half a tank of gas. We got there around 1 and they were still running numbers. The owner showed us all of your emails and made himself sound good for "going to bat for us" even though we said we were cc'd on the emails. Then he gave us a tour of all their work to make themselves look good. He also admitted that our catalytic converter did not need changed. The numbers were not ready until a little before 4. Over the course of us working with them Lee mentioned multiple times how horrible warranty companies are and how he believes they are a scam. There were definitely some shenanigans going on at this shop. On top of this there was a little bit of cash in the center console that we forgot to take out and it is no longer there. Thankfully it was only like $25. There are multiple reviews stating that things were stollen. They have signs saying they are not responsible for lost or stollen valuables while the car is at the shops. We were assured that our truck was ready to go and should run great. They knew we were going on a trip across the state. We took off for our trip and the engine light came on when we arrived at our destination. We went to run the code and it was for the part that they had fixed. We called them as soon as they opened and told us to take it to an AAA certified mechanic in the area. They were thinking that the truck likely needed more transmission fluid. They said that torque converters come pre filled, but when we talked to another mechanic they said that is not true. We took it in and they determined that the transmission was shot. They also were trying to figure out the exact work that Top Tech did and upon looking at the invoice we got they told us we got ripped off. We asked Top Tech to communicate with that mechanic and they refused to call. We called Lee a couple times and he kept saying he would when he was not busy. The other shop that it was at called our warranty company and they decided that we likely could baby it home. Since Top Tech did not contact the shop like they said they would. We just paid the bill even though they said they would cover it, but they stopped communicating. We got outside Missoula and broke down. And then we took our truck to a mechanic that my family has used for years and they determined that the transmission was shot. They looked at the transmission and noticed that Top Tech should have also looked at some of the lines connecting the transmission because those were leaking.

Short answer: You will NOT be disappointed with your visit to VW Billings!…read more Within 30 minutes we had a deal and a handshake on a used 2012 Passat TDI! Not the kind of thing you see very often at all in the car biz. Everything was at my pace and didn't feel obligated to rush into something that I didn't want to. Bought the car at a killer price (a price LITHIA told me was way to low and impossible). Eric Tipton (sales), Laraine (internet manager, and Anna (financing) were all fantastic INCLUDING the sales managers. This was my first VW but i feel that if it were any other brand i would want to give the first shot at this dealer because of there outstanding performance great attitude. Great job VW Billings, Keep up the good work!! N. Belden

One tire registered at 141 psi on their color coded handout, but they weren't worried about it- since it was 'just the computer'. I assume they didn't fix the tire because they wanted to sell me 4 new ones - mine 'almost' didn't pass. The personnel I interacted with were very professional and helpful, but I came away with the impression that the business model is more about helping make money than it is about helping the consumer. I will need new tires soon and be taking care of needed maintenance, but not from a place that takes 3 hours to do nothing.

The lady at our hotel's front desk recommended top tech. I called after 6PM on a Saturday evening and got the owner, he told me to bring my car to his shop. He confirmed that I needed new rear breaks and explained that he's not technically open on Sundays unless it's urgent. The labor is double time as well. At that point cost didn't matter because I needed to be back in Minneapolis on Tuesday for work. Daren went above and beyond to get us back on the road. All of the necessary parts were readily available and the job took less than four hours to complete. Daren took the time to explain exactly what went wrong with the rear breaks and he explained everything he did to fix them. Daren even bagged up the old parts so I could take them into the Toyota dealer who "checked"my breaks before we headed to Montana. I could tell he was as miffed as I was over the Toyota dealers "break check." Daren truly saved us from being stranded in Billings until Tuesday. I highly recommended Daren and his team. Billings has a gem of a mechanic.

We bought an RV--a Winnebago View on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis--and we lovingly named it…read more"Wombat." We adore the little tank, like seriously, to death. Then, for the last two weeks, Wombat and I got into a real toxic relationship with the onboard "good vibes" system. We went to Mercedes twice. Same story both times: a bunch of charging, a bunch of "we'll look into it," and absolutely no real solution--just money leaving the building at warp speed. So I convinced my hubby: "No more Mercedes." He agreed, and we went private. He found Quinn at European Performance. Quinn promised us a diagnostic on the DEF for free--which, naturally, my husband grabbed like it was a limited-edition coupon that might disappear. Mercedes in Billings wanted 2.5 times what everyone else was charging, so even the savings felt emotional. We pulled in, and before I could finish my seatbelt rant, Quinn had Wombat backed out and connected up. He ran diagnostics fast--like, "where did the time go?" fast. And here's the plot twist: the problem wasn't some rare unicorn issue. It was stuff that's extremely common on the Sprinter chassis... the kind that apparently no one can find or fix consistently. Fun, right? Quinn worked some magic, we got it sorted, and now Wombat is back to being the road-loving weirdo we know and love--no more drama, no more countdown, no more mystery warnings. So if your Sprinter chassis is throwing a fit go see Quinn. He'll get you back on the road without the repeat crash-and-paycycle. Wombat says thank you. And honestly? So do we.

Unfortunately, I have to say something because wow... I have taken my car in to these guys and they have done a good job fixing the things that I have paid for them to replace. However; here's the upsetting part... I took my car into them 3 times in a row telling them "it's running funny", "it's acting weird", etc. I also give them a little info... "while I was out of town I changed the spark plugs myself. You might want to start there, in case I did something wrong as I am not certified but they are. They assured me it wasn't the problem. They even said "It was driving fine, no issue." and to "keep driving it around until something popped up on the dashboard". Love that for me. Even told me that it "sounds" like and is "probably" a piston ring which would be a $8,000 fix. Went on a 1,000 mile (one way) road trip it almost gave out 35 miles before the destination. Thank you to new friends, I knew someone to help me. 15 minutes later... he SHOWED me that I, in fact, had forgotten to tighten my spark plugs. Also, thank you to my friends... even after pushing the car as much as I had... with a little bit of cleaning and proper putting it back together... compression test was perfect and she was running like normal. Beats $8,000 motor replacement... just saying.
