I have been going to Autowise for the last 4 years and I have always had excellent service and transparent transactions. I have 2003 Honda element with over 200,000 miles so I am in there at least for an oil change if not some other random issue that comes up with a car old enough to drink. Anyways, took the time to write this review because of how they treated my mother-in-law and her Kia Soul. She drove up here from LA this spring to help out our family for a couple of weeks and she started experiencing her car randomly shutting off. I told her to bring to Autowise and see if they can figure out what the issue is. Long story made fairly short... they had kept it for a few days to test drive, fix another known problem and get some advice on the issue but they were not able to figure out exactly what it was. This is what impressed me - they never talked my mother-in-law into fixing what it "could be" but instead recommend her to a Kia dealership. They opted to lose her business so she could actually get her car fixed! People are often trying to get every penny out of us, but Autowise, Mike and his whole, did not. This review is overdue because I've taken my Ford Explorer here twice already and both times they've exceeded my expectations. The first time I came here was because the AC wasn't working and my engine kept overheating. It turns out that it was the water pump that needed to be replaced. They explained to me the labor and how the water pump was deep in the engine and that it wasn't an easy fix. Since this is the family car, I just needed it done so I approved the estimate and they got to work. I think it took two weeks or maybe less but it was back to normal and I was driving it with no issues. While the car was in the shop, I did my own research about the water pump for my car and it matched pretty much the explanation they gave me. I'm going to continue to take my car here for any issues because their customer service is great and honest. read more

I've been servicing my cars here for several times now. In the beginning I rated them a five star. However over time their workmanship has became questionable. They made an error on replacing my left axle. Something with the cover was left loose and grease was left spilling around the area. At least they repaired it no charge. Another incident on the same car at a different time, I had my breaks repaired. The breaks work but now my front and steering wheel vibrates when sudden deceleration. It never did that before! We are new to the area so we had no personal experience with any of the options. The owners are a husband and wife who clearly take pride in offering great service. They both speak about cars the way a pediatrician talks to you about your sick kid. I know that sounds crazy but they seem to really care and there was no effort to upswell me a bunch of crap I don't need. The price was super fair and they notified me as soon as it was ready. Went here due to brake problems. Steering wheels and brake pedal shook when braking. Was told from here that front and back brakes needed to be fix and that they would do it for 600$. Unreal price, so I looked for other options. Instead I went over to Guaranteed Motors and Brakes over in Fremont and they fixed up my car for 125$ and told me that there was nothing wrong with my back brakes at all. I started going here because they send coupons for oil changes in the mail. They seemed fine, for a while. Then they started telling me I had all these problems with my car. I fell for it the first time and paid about $400 to flush my transmission fluid or something like that. Later on, when I talked to someone else, they told me that Toyota even recommends not doing this. The next time they said I had a leak somewhere (i forget exactly, it was a while ago). This was also going to cost about $400 to fix. This time, I was a little smarter and took my car for a second opinion (to T and L Automotive, they're awesome!). It turns out I don't have any leaks and my car is in excellent condition. I called them, extremely upset of course and they wanted me to bring it back to them for inspection. Why would I ever go back there? I guess I should, but I'm so traumatized, I never want to go back there. It's about 6 months later now and my car is still in excellent condition, so obviously they have no integrity and I guess they get new suckers by mailing out coupons, so they really don't care about their reviews. read more

This is a tough one for me. I was enticed to this place by coupon mailers for basic auto services, and I always love giving local and family owned businesses a shot before chains and corporations. The owner, Mike, and his wife, Lori, were so wonderful, genuine, and honest every time I went in there that I was hooked for years. Every issue I always brought it to Autowise, and they always seemed fair and honest. One time, Mike (the owner) even cut $50 off the signed price quote because the repair actually went a lot fast than they had expected. It's that kind of behavior that made me love them and keep coming back. Love Mike & Lori. However! The last couple times I went I dealt primarily with the other Mike, I guess he is their service manager, and my experience has not been as warm and genuine. He talks fast and really pressures high price repairs, even when I only wanted an oil change. I often feel bullied into things that I'm not really sure I want or need and know that I can't afford. After 3 trips to Autowise and feeling uncomfortable with Service Manager Mike, the final straw happened. My Honda Civic had a real hard time starting. A few times, jumping it would work, but then one day it just completely died in a gas station parking lot. I called my father-in-law (owns a body shop, general car guy) and said that based on what I was describing it was probably the starter. Called a tow-truck, and the driver took a look at it, tested the battery, in under 10 minutes said "it's probably a bad starter," towed me to Autowise, and told Service Manager Mike "it's probably the starter." Mike handed me paperwork that said "tow-in diagnostic $231" which is the equivalent of two hours labor. I thought "they'll cut that down, right? They've been fair before, right? No big deal, right?" Wrong. In the end, the price they gave me for the part was expensive but fair. And the labor they charged to replace the part was expensive but fair. But you're telling me that my father-in-law said it was the starter over the phone, and the tow truck driver said it was the starter in the gas station parking lot, and yet it took your team two full hours to determine that it was in fact the starter before you even started working on it?? I got towed in, I can't drive away. You've got me complete control of the situation, and I feel like you abused me. It won't happen again. Thanks for everything, Autowise. I was basing my loyalty on the rep of the old owners and was giving the new owners a chance. Get rid of the manager who's rude and this place over priced for repairs. WTF? I'm done with this company. I am not going to give "ZERO" stars because Lori is actually really nice. I am giving one star due to the other reviews...scammers. We have been bringing my boyfriend's car here for quite some time. Basic oil change recently, they said we needed to replace the thermostat with the housing, flush the cooling, quoting us close to $420. Okay, whatever needs to be done will be done. They had also stated that the car was not to be driven until this problem was fixed. If we drove it, there would be a high chance of the car overheating and "our engine would get messed up" Already I was annoyed that day since they kept our car overnight, letting us know 10 minutes before they close. For almost a month, my boyfriend was using my car, making it quite an inconvenience sharing a car. Finally, when we decided to get this "problem" fixed, we stopped by a different auto shop closer to our house.... this is where it gets good.. They plugged in a machine to read the "codes" that Autowise had read. All codes were completely deleted!!!! The tech checked the housing that apparently needed to be fixed, and it was not damaged NOR needed to be replaced ASAP. The car was not in any form of "not being able" to drive around. When he did quote us the housing replacement, it was not even close to what Autowise quoted us!! The tech was also surprised to see how much Autowise charged us $200+ for a diagnostic test. The fact they said our car was in no condition to drive is what got me so mad. Also the fact that we couldn't drive it unless we got it done is absolutely ridiculous. MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the place your dad always warns you about. First of all, don't bother going alone if you're a female. I initially went in for a diagnostic, and within 20 minutes Justin had me dropping 450 dollars to replace my spark plugs. Not knowing any better, I agreed and left my car there. They had my car from 1:15 till 8:30, and when I came to pick it up, he was telling me about all the terrible things wrong with it. I told him I'd wait to have the repairs done, I just wanted to get my car home. As soon as I pulled out of the driveway, the car was shaking, running terribly, and the engine light was blinking at me obnoxiously. Needless to say I was furious. The next morning my dad and I went down there and the first thing they tried to tell me was that they drove the car. Lie. There's no way on this earth that these dudes drove my car, because theres no way they would have let me take it home in that condition. He then tried to tell me that it was a problem that he advised me of, and I reminded him that the car ran fine before I brought it in. Now I don't know much about cars, but I'm no dummy, and I'm pretty sure that if you bring a car into a shop running fine, it should leave the shop running fine. Eventually the problem was fixed, but Justin never once admitted to the problem being related to a mistake made on their end. Also, those spark plugs? I checked with a dealer and found out spark plugs on my car only cost $8.50... They charged me almost 20 dollars a plug. They also tried to replace my air filter for 100 dollars, but I soon figured out that air filters aren't more than 11 dollars for my vehicle and took my father 10 minutes to replace himself. Basically: Justin is a lying, manipulative salesman willing to take advantage of every potential person that walks into that shop. Needless to say, don't go there, unless you like wasting money. read more

I took my car here for a second time for oil change because of their ongoing coupon. It'll cost $22 and and some change for a bunch of service they claim they perform (wheel rotation, check fluids, change oil filter, etc.) that are also offered by most, but hey, it's within walking distance so I go for it. Three or four months ago, they did the same thing to my van, and made recommendations to replace air filter, cabin filter, serpentine belt for a little less than $300. I walked away with my oil service done and went home to replace my own damn filters for around $35. I was skeptical about the belt. Brought it back this time around, & they made the same recommendations not knowing that I already replaced my filters just 3 months ago. And this time they tried to sell transmission service when I only have 82K miles on it. Already had it done a couple yrs ago at the dealers (which I really shouldn't have since Honda doesn't even recommend it until you reach $120K). So, completed this 2nd oil change with them on 11/10. I also have a problem with my steering wheel shaking when I tap on the brakes @ high speed, so I suspected a rotor problem, but wasn't about to trust this place with this problem. Was just @ T&L Transmission few minutes ago to inspect the brakes and having the rotors replaced now for a much reasonable price than I was quoted by other places. Showed me where the problem is, and asked them to check belt, and saw no signs of cracking or dryness that Autowise pointed out. Mentioned just having oil changed a few days ago and they pointed out my oil filter--definitely not changed just 4 days ago (see picture). BTW, had the rotors serviced by an out-of-town dealer just 2 years ago & problem came back in about 5-6 months. Didn't have time to research & was concerned about the unsteady brakes/steering wheel while traveling, and damn dealer just resurfaced my rotors instead of replacing them which is more expensive. Back to Autowise... don't think that they actually do all these extras... I'm even wondering now if they actually changed the oil! Forget their coupons & do your own oil change next time, or take it to Walmart where they won't try to sell other services for problems that don't exist. read more

Avoid this place if you don't know much about car maintenance and are not comfortable turning down most of their "suggested" maintenance items. This place is conveniently located for me. And the customer service has always been great. If they say they will fix something, they'll fix it and if they don't fix it correctly the first time (these things happen) they'll usually do any subsequent tweaks for free. They have also fixed some things for free that they could have easily charged a lot more for. They have always presented me with a list of "suggested" maintenance items, but I took the time to familiarize myself with these items and asked them direct questions which they answered truthfully. I'd say that we did not follow up on 90% of those suggested items in the past. For big ticket items I usually get a second quote and have rarely found it to be that far off. So, I've paid $350 on a $300 repair because I know these guys will fix it and stand behind their work. However, due to work, I can no longer take the car in, so it is my wife who has been dealing with them lately. The "suggested" list doubles in size when she takes the car in and they are a little bit more insistent. This is really starting to get annoying and a bad way to do business. Anyone taking their car to them should be warned. Giving out coupons for cheap oil changes and then following up with a list of "suggested" maintenance items is a pretty transparent tactic actually. It's not surprising that there are so many negative reviews on Yelp. read more

I was in the Bay Area last month and made a grueling drive up there from SoCal when my AC went out. I thought alI needed to do was charge my AC which was not the case. It needed an AC flush. When I took my car in I noticed that they do free brake inspections as well. I requested one. Thankfully I did because it my brake pads & rotors needed to be changed. I love that they offer shuttle service. I helped me a great deal. Olaf, Lori & Mike are all great. Any time I had questions they explained everything so well. I highly recommend them! read more

When this location was still D&G, while Dan and his brother (Gary?) were still running it, and even when they ran it after it became Autowise, this was a trustworthy shop with skilled people. Based on that, I took my car there a couple more times thinking that their "friend" who had taken it over from them (they went to Texas) would be just as good. Nope. And this last time was the last straw. Over $1,000 later to fix a computer sensor (which was not available to show me when I picked the car up THREE days later), I found the car out in their dirt lot with the windows OPEN, no indication that the mechanics had used any paper between them and the seat, and the fuse block cover (on my Previa, that's the entire center of the dashboard) was upside down on the passenger's seat. The car wasn't even buttoned up. Not only that, they appear to have copied their "recommendations" from a previous visit where they claimed I needed a new battery (so I bought a new one, which was installed and only a few months old) and several other things that I had checked at my previous mechanic (much better, but farther away) who told me that those things were in good shape and not needing repair or replacement. I will not be taking any of my vehicles back to Autowise. They're sloppy and untrustworthy on the whole. Nice enough people in the front office, but there isn't any real management going on there. read more

Got a call saying "AC inception will be additional charge of $175".. Seriously? Just for an inspection you will charge me $175? What about the repairs? DO NOT GO HERE! I went in for an oil change because I got a coupon in the mail for a $19.99 oil change. When I went to pick up my car, they told me there was something wrong with the steering. They quoted me $750 for the repair. They told me it would be really dangerous for me to drive if I don't repair it right away. Their scare tactic worked. Then they called me the next day, and said while they were test driving my car, they found something else wrong. This time with a sensor and will cost me another $100. If I don't change the sensor, the car will not work. When I finally picked up my car, the guy said, "your car is as good as new". And they tried to overcharge me $50. Well, after two weeks, the car started making funny noises and the steering wheel was vibrating. I took the car back and they claimed that this time it is the alternator and it will cost me $450. I will never go here again. Beware, and don't get scammed! Especially, if you are like me and know nothing about cars. read more

I have to agree with the other reviewers. Very nice people to deal with if you get to talk to the owner, Dan. Dan is a really nice guy. The others are either indifferent at best and disinterested at worse. Also they (not Dan) always seem to want to sell you some services, you know "by the book". I believe they are trying to be a premium service but IMO this area is probably not the right demographic. The positive is that they have a pick up and drop off services which is convenient for me.... However they are VERY very expensive. I go there for oil change because of the monthly 'get to know you' program. I would only recommend them if you are only doing an oil change only. Be prepared to be convinced something else is wrong with your car. I really want to like this place because it's local and the owner used to work at 76 on Fremont Blvd and Tamayo, and want to keep the tax money local but sadly, the people he hired (at least the ones I dealt with) does not have the same mentality as Dan. I received a coupon for oil change from the mail yesterday. I decided to use the coupon and called them this morning to make an appointment. I was told to come at 11 am which I did. They told me it would take about an hour or so to do the oil change and perform an inspection of the vehicle. I told them to check the brakes if they get a chance. They offered a free shuttle which I took advantage of. The shuttle service drove me back home which was 2 miles away. The driver was excellent and followed all the traffic laws which was very comforting. I got a call back a couple hours later asking where the wheel lock key was located so they can check the brakes. I told them to check the front compartment and the tool case behind the car where the tools are for fixing the tire. Unfortunately they could not find it so they were not able to check the brakes. They also reported that they saw my radiator had a leak and needs to be replaced. They gave me an estimate for it. I told them I will think about it and make an appointment in the future. They said ok and told me my SUV was ready. I rode my bike to their shop since it was only a couple miles away. When I arrived they showed me a photo of the radiator leak and warned me that I can get into trouble if I don't get that fixed. I told them I will keep that in mind. The coupon was for 17.95 oil change but I paid 27.95 since it was a larger engine and needed more oil. I did get a 12 dollar discount from the regular price. When I arrived home I checked the oil and it looks new. I tried to check the filter but could not determine if it was replaced. I should have marked the old one prior to going. I checked the radiator underneath and I did see the leak they mentioned which matched the photo they showed me. Overall I was satisfied and will likely take my SUV back for the repairs they recommended. read more

First off, the only reason I am not giving them a 5 star rating is I hate paying for car repairs cause I'm a broke ass baby mama. Having to pay for car repairs when you can barely afford the basics in life sucks butt. Anywho, I never had a problem with them. A friend of mine who has been going to them for years recommended them to me. The last time my car was with them was in May 2010. They did a complete diagnostic on my car which cost $225.00. But they found the problem and didn't charge me for additional labor, just the part they needed to replace which was an additional $30.00. Yeah, $255.00 is still a lot of money but they fixed the problem and did a complete inspection on my car, noting any other problems they saw. The only other problems they saw (knock on wood) was that I needed new tires. They could of lied and said my doohickey and thing-a-ma-bob needed replacement and charged me $500.00 to replace them. They also came to get the car from my work and picked me up when the car was done. How cool is that? As for the person that complained about them raising the price of parts that were replaced, that's how all businesses make their money. When you buy a car, you don't pay the price the dealership bought it for. They have to make a profit off the purchase/service provided. read more

I happen to love this place. I bring my car in for oil changes frequently and haven't had any problems... Yes they recommend work that needs to be done but that's any shop looking to keep your vehicle maintained. I decline the work and they don't hassle me. They have a shuttle service and drive me home so I don't have to wait there. Who else does that? Not Midas. Plus they remember me! The owners are very friendly and personable. They can't be that bad; it's always packed with customers' cars. I recommend coming here instead of an oil changing franchise. read more

Because of their frequent coupons, this is the only place I bring my car for an oil change. The staff is extremely friendly and my car is always returned to me in excellent condition. I don't know about the checks, but the tire rotation that's included with the oil change always gets done because they ask me for the key to my wheel locks. They have never tried to charge me for anything extra on my car. Plus, they have a shuttle that will take you home and pick you back up when they're finished. I love that. Based on other reviews, I'll be on the look-out for a screwing over.. but so far this is my go-to shop. read more

I have been bringing our company cars here for a few months now. I am very happy with the service. I usually talk with Lori, and she is always very nice! And when I talk to the others working there, they are jsut as nice! I have never been pressured into repairing anything on the vehicles. They do make suggestions, but it's never "do this repair or your car will break". I am glad that this shop is here and I hope my company coninues to let us use them! A couple days after posting my review here, the owner (Mike Sellar) asked me to bring my car if the noise/vibration problem persisted. I laid out all the difficulties I had from trying to resolve the issue with his manager (Justin H.) last time. Justin required me to pay for the labor again when I requested for another axle replacement as the one installed might be defective. I also told him that his mechanics used a wrong engine oil type (10W30 instead of 5W30) for my car. Because I was tired of having arguments with Justin, I took my car to Pennzoil to get another oil change. Mike agreed to replace the axle at no cost and issued a voucher for a free oil change. Hence, I brought my car back to his shop for another axle replacement and picked up the voucher. The noise/vibration problem when driving at a speed higher than 70 mph has been resolved. Yet, Justin H. still did not want to admit that the previous axle was defective. He even told me a lot of bullshits, trying to convince me that it was the transmission problem. This guy was also the one who refused to perform the axle test and claimed that the test was invalid & unsafe. Well, to start, they pamper you with shuttle rides to home, but they make up for it by the 'EXPENSIVE' labor of $120/hour while you can easily find labor as cheap as $60/hour at many decent Auto-repair shops. The cost isn't the only concern. Crappy customer service also adds to the kitty. I took my car to them a few days before 4th July weekend with some issues in the Braking system. They fixed it of course and also did some other stuff with the bill of around $600+. However, the same day, when i took my car home, i realized the Air-conditioning wasn't working anymore. I called them. They told me to bring it in. They never admitted that they 'broke' the Air-conditioning. Rather they told me that they need to diagnose the issue and will cost me 1.5 hours (~$165) + the parts (if any). So basically they meant to charge me for something they broke...! Needless to say i took my car back and swore never to go back again... Beware...I can see 15 customer ratings on yelp with Average rating of 1.5/5, That should tell you enough. read more

THESE GUYS ARE TOO SLOW!! Went in for an oil change because I had a coupon. It's nice that they rotate your tires, check your fluids and let you know what needs to be fixed. I waited an hour and a half for an oil change and maintenance checks. AN HOUR AND A HALF, even though I HAD an appointment. I did not like this. After reviewing my car, they insisted that I get new brake pads (which, from reading previous reviews, they ALWAYS "RECOMMEND"). They also recommended that I purchase new front tires, which I too noticed was necessary. However, I have been waiting for my car for 4 hours. FOUR hours for a tire change and alignment when I could have just gone to PEP BOYS who was offering me $35 less than what Autowise offered me. It takes about an hour for an alignment and maybe ten minutes to put on one tire I DO NOT recommend these guys. They take their sweet time trying to "fix" your car. They tell you the job "will be done in a couple of hours", but you don't get your car back until 4 hours later. Just so we're clear the definition of a "couple" refers to two NOT FOUR. A good thing about this place is that they are willing to drive you back home or anywhere else you'd want to go while your car is being worked on. I am definitely not wowed by this place. I rarely write reviews but BE AWARE! No matter what discounts you could potentially get to take ur car here, stay away. They damaged my car and then refused to service it with no explanation. The Volkswagen dealership made it clearly evident to me. They never rotated my tires, claimed I did not even purchase new tires (even with proof of receipt they don't want to service it) and my entire family has been going here for years.
