Glad we found CA Auto Service (Alex) who was willing to service my 20-feet long conversion van motorhome for all kinds of work that I needed done before a long road trip: brake fluid flush, transmission fluid change, spark plugs replacement and tune up. I told Alex the steering wheel felt unstable with poor control, and he discovered the idler arm in the steering wheel system has a loose bolt under the engine which was a safety hazard. It's a 25-year old van, bound to have old parts falling apart, thank goodness he found the issue! He was able to replace the idler arms on the spot at a very reasonable price. All in all, very honest, professional and reasonable pricing. Most other shops flat out rejected to service my van stating it's too long for their shops, but Alex offered to help and went above and beyond. Granted, I did my research ahead of time since it's my first 1995 Roadtrek motorhome with Dodge engine (100k+ miles) so I wanted to know what maintenance was needed and provided some of the parts myself (e.g. my preferred brand fluids, etc.) After the servicing, the auto transmission drives smoother, the brake feels more sensitive, and the wheel feels more stable and safer (i.e. it doesn't sway left and right like it used to when driving at high speed). As a bonus, I asked Alex about fuel injection cleaning, and he said it's pretty easy to do it myself, perfect for my love of DIY! read more

Orlin and alec are the best. They just opened up and I went to them via facebook. These guy are so good. They repair anything and they will actually explain everything to you as the repair it. And if theres anything else you need done they will tell you why it need it needs to be done. They dont give you the usual bs. These guys actually know what their doing and not some itt tech or boy that works at firestone. I got my driveshaft and tie rods done for under 500$?!? Where do you find that? They let you sit in the office not to far away and they explain every step. It feel like your own friend is fixing your car. They also did not mind to use my fluid and explained what they did as they worked. On Friday noon I left on a trip to Vegas and of course my alternator had to die on me. The good part is that it happened 10 min after i left and i was able to drive back to the shop. This is a VERY late and overdue review but one well deserved. I've taken my A4 Quattro to California Auto only a few times. That said, I've come back because of the easy-to-speak-with, highly knowledgeable, and exceptionally proficient skills of Alex. As my car is quite modified (K04 turbo with APR 1-4 mode ECU file mapping, intake, FMIC, custom exhaust, ST Suspension coilovers and rear sway bar, 034 engine, transmission, rear diff, and rear subframe mounts/inserts, X-Brace) one tends to become more discerning when having work done. Not a lot of shops are as eager to dive into a modified car, understandably so given the multitude of variables they can present. So, unless said shop is familiar with not only the car platform, but what's out there aftermarket wise and how they alter the car's makeup. With that all taken into account, I've never once sensed any hesitation or reluctance from Alex. In fact, he's definitely an enthusiast which is a big plus as it was clear he'd had previous experience with them so it makes diagnosing and formulating a plan of attack much less cumbersome. So, don't let his laid back, easy going manner fool you. HE KNOWS HIS STUFF! Though the shop is small, I've always felt that I was attended to and estimates/availability are very reasonable. You never feel like you're getting a pitch or being upsold on something that may not be warranted. What you will get is s fair, honest assessment, what it will entail to correct and soonest availability. So, if your an Audi/VW/BMW owner who's looking for a well rounded, easy to talk to, straight shooter in the Fremont area who knows their stuff and is mod-friendly, come give Alex at California Auto a try! read more

Usually I go to Import Car Specialist which was next door to this place. Mike was an awesome car tech, but this review is not for him. I needed my Jetta repaired right away as it was leaking coolant. Since Import Car Specialist is closed, I decided to go to this shop because they had a BMW e30 in one of their bays. After speaking with both Orlin and Alex they took my car in right away and got to work. They immediately discovered the source of the leak and informed me of how much the repair would cost. My car was ready the next day at a very reasonable price. After this, I think I will starting taking all of my cars here. read more

I felt my clutch going out on my 93 civic on my way to work and yelped the nearest auto shop. This shop came up so I stopped by for a quote. Alex looked at my car and suggested I needed a new clutch. I trusted his diagnosis and went along with the replacement of the whole clutch system. A couple hundred dollars and a few days later my car was ready. The clutch felt like brand new. I drive a MINI Cooper S and noticed the clutch started chattering and slipping. I saw the great reviews for this place and that they specialize in European cars so I gave them a call. They were professional and got me an accurate quote quickly. The quote was very fair and I decided to go with them. When dropping off my car I noticed that the repair area was very clean and organized. You can tell they are passionate about what they do. When I picked up my car I was shown the old parts and explained what was wrong with them. They even took photos of my car during the repair and showed them to me :-) It took them longer than originally quoted, but I know that the clutch/fly-wheel replacement is labor intensive and MINI's are a pain to work on. They were kind enough to give me a discount because it had taken longer than expected. Bottom line up front: I found that they were willing to grossly overcharge me for repairs that costed only a fraction of the price elsewhere ($2000 here, $85 dollars at High Street Auto). Dishonest and disappointing, with unrealistic time frames for completed repairs. Avoid if you can (you certainly can). Pros: A good base point, so once they quote you here, you can go elsewhere and see just how much cheaper it would be to fix your car. Cons: Prices, inefficiency, lack of professionalism, dishonesty, and overall dissatisfaction with their service. Came here about three weeks ago to fix my car. Had AC problems, squeaky brakes, a blown taillight, and my car would shake violently when driving beyond 60 mph. Dropped off my car here since I live close by, and was told to come back in half an hour for a quote. Came back, ended up waiting an extra hour and a half, with no one else in the lobby and only one other car in the shop. Was told that my AC system had to be completely replaced, brake discs and pads same story, front bumper and blown shocks/struts were what was "probably" causing the shaking (the mechanic said he didn't notice any shaking...despite my telling him that I noticed it for the past few days). I was quoted a $2000 price tag for my car, and that it would take several days to order everything and replace/repair. I asked the mechanic to give me a print out of everything, but he said he couldn't. Instead, he hand-jammed everything on a little notepad, while pecking away at his keyboard with his index fingers (and dramatically raising his eyebrows occasionally) to show he was looking up the "least expensive parts that can be used" that were still of quality. The mechanic gave me a snake's grin when he slid his quote to me and said that if I make up my mind on the spot about going with the repairs, that he could see what he could do about a discount. I quietly (and disbelievingly) left with the thought that I wasted half my afternoon with this place. I called another repair shop that I had my car serviced at before in the past, and found that they were much more professional, reasonable with their assessment of my car, actually took the time out to show me what was wrong (as opposed to just making me sit in the lobby while making of show of an inspection), and gave me recommendations for what I can do. I ended up replacing my tires, based on feedback from the new shop, instead of replacing the front bumper/shocks/struts from California Auto. That fixed the shaking immediately. The new shop, High Street Auto, ended up repairing everything else on my laundry list for $85 dollars. I literally saved myself a rent payment by trusting my gut feeling and going to High Street. Do yourself a favor. If you live close by to this shop, California Auto, take the time and go to the other side of Fremont and visit Terry at High Street. Put the money you save into something worthwhile, because you will end up saving quite a bit. read more

A while back i had the AC fixed on our Yaris, i think both Alex and Orlin are intelligent enough to fix complex problems. I think the main thing to look at when you are trying to find a good mechanic is to figure out if the individual is capable of thinking through a new problem they come across, California Auto Service i think is capable of doing just that. I have not known them long enough to tell you that i give you my word they will remain forever as good as they are, but i think they just may be. For years, I was committed to bringing my car to the dealership for service, but I've grown tired of having an oil change appointment stretch out to 2 hours. I decided to give a local repair shop a try and went to Yelp to check the ratings. After finding C.A.S., I thought I'd give the place a try and got there 45 minutes before they opened Saturday. Alex was already there at 9:15 (they open at 10:00 on Saturday) and kindly took my car early even though I told him I was prepared to wait, not wanting to impose if he had something to do before officially opening. We talked while he went about changing my oil and filter, and I felt he was not only knowledgeable about my car's make and model but also a man of integrity; I mentioned what issues the dealer found with my car, and he concurred, showing me the actual part needing repair and giving me an explanation about why a problem existed. In this case, it was a CV boot that holds grease against the axle, and he showed me the tear. I was given a quote and I'll make plans for the repair at a future date since I'm comfortable with Alex doing the work. The shop is located a short walk from Suju's Coffee, so you can drop your car off and have a cup of coffee and read while you wait. Competition from neighboring auto repair shops keeps C.A.S.'s prices fair and I feel the customer service delivered by Alex puts this shop high on my list for a return visit and a recommendation to fellow Yelp users. Ken BTW, per your recommendation, I got my tires changed that same day. They looked up my records and I got 70,000 miles off a 60,000 mile tire with even wear. I guess a good time to make a judgement about a place is when things go wrong. As this place was convenient to us we chose them for some work on our car. The quoted price was no better or worse than we expected. So, we went with them. They did the job on time and communicated with us clearly. Things did not work out and we started having new problems straight after they finished. So, we had to take it back for a re-do.
