It struck me odd when some old man (Rich) started asking me what exactly I wanted them to check in this pre-purchase inspection. He asked me "do you want us to drive it around or do you want us to treat it like I were buying it and check the windows and AC?". I asked him "Don't you have a checkoff list or pre-determined 'per-purchase inspection' checkoff list?" He began getting irate with me and eventually summarized with the question "so what do you want me to check on it?" I told him "I don't want you checking anything on this vehicle, but thank you for you're return call" (it took 3 calls over the course of an hour before I got a return call). If I had to guess, he was not committing to a precise list of checked items or cost for the test and the inspection so that he could hold onto the vehicle for several hours and charge me for the time it took him to tiddly wink around. EDIT: Apparently the owner (Rich) reads these, because he left me a follow up voicemail a couple days ago "I just wanted you to know you're a fucking asshole".

I spoke with Rich on the phone and was really enthused about his knowledge and passion for the 914. I explained to him that I'm a confident field medic and would be doing a lot of the work myself (a.k.a. he wasn't going to get any billable man hours for much of what I wanted done) and yet he still spent a lot of time speaking with me at length about different 'land mines' to watch out for as this was my first Porsche (I've had old Triumph GT6 Mk III, BMW 320i's and still have my '72 Bavaria) I went down and on a rainy day he came out and looked at my 914 and gave me many tips about how to dial it in (again at no financial gain to himself) and really saved me a lot of time, money and aggravation finding it all out for myself. I've just come across a 2.0 engine which has been sitting around for a few years and I plan to drop it in place of my 1.8. Larry, again spent a lot of time telling me about the 2.0 and what to expect etc. and gave me a great feeling of confidence that this would be a great switch over. So far I am very impressed with H.P.H. I'll write in again after the drop in is complete. J. Andrew S.
