Hard to believe, but I've been coming to Avalon for the last 10 years. I love the Aveda brand and their products. Let me rave about my favorite people: Selene: is my go to for my color. I've been coming to her for 2+ years and always get so many compliments on my color. Selene is a sweet person and puts a lot of care into her clients. Sam: Sam has been cutting my hair for several years. He's such a sweet person and it's been fun watching him grow into his craft. She's very experienced and a true professional through and through. She cares about the integrity of your hair. Will do what you ask for and stands behind her work. She's also very kind and has a calm, and relaxing demeanor which makes my 3hr appointments that much better. Zoe the assistant is an absolute sweetheart and also did a great job. She's fun to talk to as well! They are EXTREMELY FAIR on price here and honest. I have spent up to $1400 on foils in the past at celeb salons in LA and left with better results HERE for a sheer fraction of the price. Major bonus points scored for the rinsing bowl chairs! They're actually comfortable and your neck won't feel like it's breaking while being processed/rinsed! Dahlia cut my hair and she was absolutely amazing!! I love how we first had a consultation -- where she asked me to show her how much i wanted off (everyone has a different interpretation of inches when it comes to hair!) and then brought my haircut to life. The hair washing bowls were very comfortable and I felt extremely safe with all of the COVID protocols in place -- disinfecting stations between use, masks required, plastic barriers put in place, and many more! I'm giving Amy the honor of my 400th review as a Yelper because she has just made my day with this haircut! It's interesting how the world goes round. I love the objectivity of Yelp in the sense that you will get to see honest experiences and how they vary from one patron to the next, perhaps one day to the next. (So... it's subjective to each user's personal experience, and objective in sharing even those experiences that contradict one another!) I know what it's like to get a bad color job - I've been sent from a salon TWICE by the same stylist before with nuclear neon Barbie nightmare hair, charged full price and told "you look great" through lying teeth - only to have to go find someone else to fix it. Reading another review on here of the poor girl whose color was done poorly and went to Floyd's to have it fixed, I find myself having a very opposite experience from her's - thankfully! Last year I had a very very bad haircut done at Floyd's that took me a very long time to grow out. In fact, it scared me away from letting anyone touch my hair at all for a while I was so unhappy with it. Yesterday, I needed a pick-me-up and my dead ends needed extermination, so I looked up a West Village salon with a good rating, ended up calling Avalon, and Amy had an opening. So, on a wing and a prayer and a dose of courage, I thought I'd risk a new salon and a new stylist. My requests are always the same: Add some side bangs, frame the face, feel free to add layers, I want body on top and in back if possible... leave the length as much as possible while trimming the dead. It's honestly not too much to ask. And Amy delivered on all fronts! I'm so completely happy with this haircut. I appreciate a stylist who is easy to talk to and down to Earth, which Amy is. I appreciate that she specializes in cuts, and that she's interested in the style I want - when I told her that I don't blow dry my hair to style it every morning and I like to be lazy with it, let it go wavy, etc., she made sure my cut would hold up to that. She didn't pressure me to buy products, didn't try to book the next appointment while giving me the cut, she didn't try to get me to color it. She just delivered exactly what I had asked for quickly and expertly and really casually. It was just a great experience. Kelly, a colorist, washed and prepped me before the cut, and I always appreciate knowing that they have specialists in a salon - if you want your hair colored, a colorist will do it, then when you want it cut, a stylist will cut it. Having a stylist who was great at cutting experiment on my hair with color was what got me in trouble years ago, and having a stylist who didn't listen to what I want in a cut has landed me very bad hair cuts most recently. I was so happy that this experience gave me nothing to fret about! Overall, Amy gets 5 stars and she'll be seeing me again! Worst Salon experience of my entire life. The staff is stuck up and outright unkind. I scheduled an appointment for a cut and color and was chewed out by the colorist for me not giving her enough time to color my hair. I didn't schedule the amount of time it was the receptionist, but that didn't seem to bother her. She ripped me a new one for 20ish minutes while coloring my hair and then continued to be unkind for the remainder. My hair was fine. It wasn't a bad a job or an exceptionally good job. But the customer service was so incredibly horrendous I will never ever go in that building again. There are so many great places in Dallas find literally ANYWHERE else. I visited Avalon salon about a week ago, looking for a new stylist to help me grow my hair out of a pixie cut. They paired me with Nancy and I could not be happier that they did! Nancy is kind and attentive and made sure that she understood exactly what I was trying to achieve with this cut. I will never be recommending this place to anyone. I scheduled my appointment over a week in advance and day of, we had a random ice storm which caused me to run behind. I called at 11:10am trying to find the location as I was a first time customer and did not want to call while I was driving due to the weather being so bad. Whomever was the receptionist just asked if I could be there in 2 mins and I told her I was walking trying to locate the business. I'm 7 months pregnant and was trying to waddle quickly as to not slip on the ice. I finally show up at 11:17 to be told my stylist would not see me and I needed to reschedule. I completely understand keeping an appointment but due to weather it was not my fault. I may have not even been as upset if the girl wasn't so rude about it. I have NEVER been rescheduled so quickly by any hair salon and never been treated so rudely. Again, I understand time constraints but maybe you should teach your employees to show some empathy. read more

Stay away!!! They BUTCHERED my hair!! I told Dusty I want a light trim she took over 12 inches off and gave me nasty choppy layers I'm so embarrassed everyday!!! I waited weeks to write this review to make sure I was being fair after the initial shock wore off. TERRIBLE more so than It was initially. I am a model and entertainer and she literally ruined my hair. Then they tried to charge me when I was literally in tears! I honestly feel abused by her. What she did is assault, and ruined my livelihood. Plus gave me an attitude and said 'it'll grow back and you can wait extensions' as she rolled her eyes at me!!! Her license should be revoked! After deciding to chop of my long locks, I went to a different salon and ended up with a haircut that made me regret cutting it off at all. My mistake was not coming to Avalon in the first place. I made an appointment with Heather and I will be coming back anytime i need a touch-up. Heather is really sweet and she took her time with my hair and explained what the other stylist must have done - she didn't even throw shade! She was meticulous with fixing my hair and was truthful about how there would be a weird spot in the back of my head that just needs to grow out unless i wanted to get more cut off the bottom. I appreciated that she didn't make the decision to cut it without asking me first. She is a true master at her craft! I just had my second visit (if you can call it that) to Avalon Salon after 6 years. I recently moved to the Uptown neighborhood and I thought I would try this salon again since I liked the way they did my blow out years before. I made my appointment on a Sunday and added all the details to my calendar for today's appointment. After a lot of juggling with my schedule I was completely prepared and excited to have my hair done before going out of town for business. I showed up at the salon at 4:08 for my 4:30 appt. (I like to be early in case there are ever any issues). The receptionist wasn't overly friendly when I walked in, she barely said hello and just asked for my name. After typing my details into the computer, she said that my appointment did not exist. I asked her to check again and try my maiden name as well and she still could not find my appointment. After asking a few times how this could have happened and what we could do about it she said she simply did not know and there was nothing they could do today, she said that no one would be available to cut my hair today and that they could do it another day. I explained that I was going out of town and couldn't come back and that I planned my entire week around this appointment but she didn't make any effort to help resolve the issue. The most she said that she would do is leave a note so that someone would be aware of what happened. I come from a background of hospitality and I worked in a very high end salon for many years, if there was an issue with an appointment, the issue was escalated to management or a salon leader immediately. I understand and respect the schedules of hair stylists and I don't expect anyone to jump for me but I do expect some respect in return. In short, if I make an appointment and for some reason someone on their end screwed something up along the way and my appt is no longer in existence, I would like more than to be told there is nothing that anyone can do and the issue will be noted. This was a disappointing experience and I, unfortunately, will not return to Avalon Salon for future haircare needs. I heard that Dear Clark is great and I will going there instead. read more

Went in for a cut and color today. The cut was fine, but I was pretty disappointed with the color. I went in for a consultation weeks before, and the colorist said the color was completely doable after I showed her a picture of my desired color. I had a black to blondish ombré, and I wanted to go more violet/red with caramel highlights. When I went in today, the colorist didn't seem as confident or attentive to the desired color. After the wash, my hair just looked chestnut brown. Partly because she didn't bleach my hair. It barely had any red tones, lacked vibrancy, and was unlike the picture I showed her. I just wish I would have had a better idea of what I signed up for since the color is alright-- just not what I was expecting since this color feels one dimensional. She said after a few washes the red would come out. I hope so since it was quite the price to pay for an alright feel after the whole experience.Yet, it doesn't make sense because she never bleached my hair. You're supposed to bleach dark hair when you color...I feel sketched out and a little tricked. 1 UPDATE: I called in and they were very flexible to do a color correction free of charge. You can do this as long as it's within a 14 day window 2 UPDATE: I didn't get to go back in because of my schedule, but they were trying to be flexible for the most part. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back just because the color service was not good at all. read more

Fellow yelpers you failed me. Your reviews did not mirror anything close to the experience I had. I went in to get my hair cut and colored. I showed Lee the colorist 3 photos and explained I wanted a natural look with a blend of light blond colors. Instead he bleached my hair all one flat color. It came out looking like ratty doll hair. To make matters worse he kept rambling at how great it looked. I don't know if he was actually seeing my hair because it looked horrible. After the coloring they sent me to someone else to get my hair cut. As I walked past the other patrons they all have me that look like "oh my god your hair." So clearly it was as bad as I thought. I showed the stylist a picture of the cut I wanted and she said no problem. She started to cut my hair and I noticed she was following my old style cut NOT the new style picture I showed. After she finished the cut I figured she'd dry and style it. Instead they blow dried it flat with no attempt at styling it. It came out looking flat, stringy, with a horrible helmet color of yellow-orange. I went to Floyd's barber shop the next day and had a girl named Mari fix it. She looked at the pictures I had showed the guy at Avalon and she said no problem. She did it exactly to my asking. Never again will I set foot in Avalon and I will not recommend it to anyone. They charged me a total of $320 for a horrible color and cut. Avoid this business! read more

Jennifer listened to what I wanted and was super cool and friendly. The receptionist gave me a tour of the salon and spa and some Aveda tea. Overall a great experience. I just moved to Dallas from NYC and was looking for a local salon, desperately needed a cut/color, which brought me to Avalon. It is an Aveda salon. When I walked in I was sat down on a bench and was not told anything else. I waited about 20 minutes, even though I was on time for my appointment. Finally, they provided two separate stylist to color and cut my hair. The first person who colored my hair did little to no consultation, luckily I get simple partial blonde highlights and am pretty verbal about what I want. Once I was done, I was told to go sit on a bench again with no explanation and with no one monitoring my highlights or letting me know what was next. I was confused and the woman next to me was receiving actual service (like I have read about but did not get). she had coffee constantly brought to her and was checked up on- leaving me feeling unattended thinking my hair would most likely fry off. The girl who cut my hair was great- the only reason I said I would give the salon a second chance. SO, the next time I went back I had a similar experience. They offer wine? I would never know because I was never offered any drinks or asked how anything was. I only went for a partial and a trim and the guy who colored my hair put a toner on it- not asking if I even wanted it or bothering to tell me it was an additional charge (never had a toner before - had no idea what it was). They removed the cost, but now I will have to get a toner put on my hair every time I get it done! Not what I wanted since I have naturally blonde hair and tend to go longer in between cuts and can get away with roots. The salon removed the charge since I was unaware of what was going on, but not everyone is a stylist and would know that a toner is additional, etc. I give Sylvia 5 stars for the haircut because she is great, but everything else was a disappointment. read more

Seeing how it's International Talk Like A Pirate Day, and this pirate plans on lootin', pillagin', drinkin', and wenchin' tonight, bikini-clad and in celebration from the decks "El Diablo", I thought perhaps I should further celebrate my pirateness by getting waxed. Avalon Salon offers many services besides body waxes; they offer nail treatments (that's manicures and pedicures to us common-folk), massage therapy, body scrubs and facials. They also have a full service hair salon. I was waxed by Melody, who is professional, friendly, and a great conversationalist. Not only did Melody do a fantastic job, but the time really went by quickly with her. For a full leg and bikini wax, I was charged $85, which is pretty inexpensive. However, and this is my one complaint about Avalon's waxing service, their prices are not fixed. When I called to book my appointment, the call center told me that the prices of a wax would depend on the location and the employee providing the service. Now I can understand one person may have more certifications than another, and therefore, may be more expensive, but when did location start to figure into a price? The person on the phone told me the prices would range like so: Half Leg: $40 Full Leg: $85 Regular Bikini: $65 Extended Bikini: $40 - $45 Brazil: $65 So, yes, I was pleasantly surprised that my wax job only cost $85. However, why did my job cost less? I don't know the rhyme behind Avalon's price reasoning, but I ran outta there like I just made out with loot. Avalon is overpriced and has horrible customer service. I use to go to the Uptown location regularly to get my eyebrows done and occassionally my hair. Every time I've had a cut here, it was just so-so. For the price, that is uncalled for. I stopped going to Avalon because the customer service was horrible. I once went through an entire waxing session listening to the esthetician complain that her schedule was going to be behind because of my appointment. I arrived there on the dot, but the front desk girl was too busy to assist me. There are plenty of salons in Dallas with better service, at a better price. read more

I was a regular customer for a long time at this location. The former salon director did a great job with my color for 5+ years, but the colorist who took over with my hair never did a great job. I had to have her correct it every other visit, and eventually went to another Avalon location, and now to a different salon altogether. The West Village location is a mess. The owners haven't updated anything since this place opened 10+ years ago. The stylists' cabinets are banged up and dirty. The vinyl baseboards are filthy. The orange chairs where color customers sit while processing are uncomfortable and stained. The towels used to be black, but now they're bleached and stained. Some of the fixtures in the restrooms are missing, dirty or broken. The spa area no longer has regular manicure service, so they just have boxes piled and stowed in that area. I'd been there recently for awesome massages with Tracey, but she recently left. Seems like there are different people at the front desk nearly every time I've gone in. What used to be a fresh, clean modern salon and spa has really let itself go. read more

I live in uptown Dallas and have been looking for a good colorist.... I am naturally blonde and prefer myself as a brunette. Every salon I have been to, before Avalon, I explain how blonde I really am and warn them they must compensate so that I don't have hot roots and EVERY time they rush me, rush my color and I have ended up with hot roots. This time I decided to go to Avalon on Blackburn and Mckinney bc I pass it everyday on my way to work. I called and was scheduled with Michelle Key as my colorist. She really listened to me, she was so polite and knowledgable and hospitable. I was in a time crunch and told her in the beginning what time I needed to be done by.. Not only did she listen to me about my hair and where i wanted to go, but she also had another stylist help blow my hair out with her so that she could make sure to get me out on time. My color looks amazing!! so rich and so right on!! I will definitely be going back to see Michelle and I definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a fantastic colorist. read more

Best massage in town. Great value. It's the only place I go in Dallas, and I only go to Cara Lily. Her hands are strong and rather effective. Sometimes I still walk out with a few kinks, but to be fair I give her a lot to work with, and we only have an hour. Angela is amazing! I was a control freak when anyone was cutting my hair, giving specific instructions on what I wanted. When I first started going to Angela she was very understanding and worked with me... I had a really bad cut cut I had a few years ago. I have really thick and curly hair that stylist love to take thinning shears to. With Angela's help, I have finally grown out the horribly uneven layers and i am now very trusting of angela and her expert judgment when cutting my hair. I will have been seeing her for almost a year now. I always get complements all day when I leave her chair! She also did a brazilian blowout for me on my last visit which was amazing! it changed my life.....it now takes 20 min to dry and straighten my hair where as before it took about an hour. To top it all off Angela is so sweet and fun to talk to that my time in the chair goes by so quickly. I give this place four and a half stars because I once went here for a haircut when I was looking for a stylist and had to shell out $100 for a haircut. Yes, he was once of their master stylists or whatever but it definitely wasn't worth that much money. HOWEVER, I've been visiting Patricia at Avalon for brazilians for a couple years now and she ROCKS. She is totally awesome at waxing and she really takes a personal interest in her customers--even though she was promoted to salon manager, she still continues to do aesthetician stuff (thank god, I don't know how I'd replace her). The facilities here are very relaxing and I freaking love the teas they have in the waiting room. I've only had someone else once (Melody? Melanie? something like that) when she was out on vacation, and it was slightly uncomfortable because she made no effort to converse with me and get my mind off of exactly what was going on on the table there. She was just as good at waxing but yeah...crickets....I'm sure some people prefer that though. So if you're looking to get intimate with a salon, I suggest you give this one a try. read more

This is the second time I've been to this location, and I honestly can't say anything bad about it. Granted, I only have my hair cut here... No color or other spa services so I can't review anything else. The appointment slots tend to fill up faster on the weekends, so just be aware you will usually need to book your appointment earlier in the week if you want a Saturday time. But I noticed that they just added an online booking option, so that is an added convenience in my book! The girls at the reception desk are always really friendly and helpful. On my first visit I saw Adrienne and this past time Laraine cut my hair (don't judge me, I just can't commit when it comes to hair stylists!). Both women did a great job, and I was in-and-out in less than an hour. I love the Aveda products they use, and my hair always smells so good when I leave. Parking can be a little tough int he West Village, especially on weekends. So you should probably just save time and immediately head for the parking garage. I went in for two 90-min massages right before I took the bar exam. Vanessa did a wonderful job! I fell asleep on the table both times, which I have never done before. The atmosphere is lacking a little in the waiting area. You can hear the sounds of the hair salon and the couches were stiff and not cozy. They did have tea and water available, however. It is not the full relaxation experience you would get at a full-on spa, but the massage itself was so good (and so reasonably priced) that it was worth skipping the fluffy robes and comfy couches. Definitely go see Vanessa! She is sweet, friendly, and very talented. She went the extra mile to make sure I was relaxed before I took the bar exam. I was already a big fan of Aveda salons on the whole, so take that as my caveat emptor. I really enjoyed my first trip to Avalon and will be back. The service was excellent and I felt like everyone at the salon was making sure I was comfortable while I waited. This is my week for wash & blow outs...seriously,,.was here for the OU-TX shootout and my Sooners lost so I am still a wee bit upset. My hair was looking pretty dull and needed the skills of a professional. The Hilton Anatole recommended this place. super cool area complete with this amazing gluten free bakery kitty corner across the street. Seriously great desserts! I was at this salon TWO TIMES in three days. After my hair was exposed to deep fried butter and stinky corn dogs, along with the humidity, i needed to go back again. Prices were very reasonable: $45 and $50. Bonus: offering of wine. That was the clincher for me. That was an $8 savings right there! My hair was shiny, swinging and my boyfriend loved it.
