I just recently was able to give LIWEI a try, using a Groupon for a facial. My facial was with Queenie, and she was superb at her Craft. My facial started off with a cleansing ritual, very gentle very thorough. Followed by a lengthy facial massage which I cannot stress enough. We do not realize how badly we need these things to take care of our skin. I am so grateful that I have the opportunity. Followed by a steam session with light extraction, and then some oil, and then Queenie began the Gua sha treatment and then finally a cold mask and I was left to relax for about 10 minutes with that mask on. the entire session was just over an hour and it was 100% worth the value. We left with remnants of mask/tissue paper in our hairs. Thorough clean off doesn't exist here. It is what it is. Visiting NYC and I came here with my partner for a 1st-time facial (TikTok hyped), hoping for a relaxing experience--and unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected. When we arrived, my partner was shown a pamphlet and given facial options. But when I expressed we were there for their 1st-time $49 facial deal, I received a mean mug like and was told--very abruptly and loudly "YOU CANNOT" because I "have acne." She traced the perimeter of her forehead with her finger to demonstrate where she noticed my acne was. Yea ok, not necessary from someone who's not even doing my facial . I felt like I was being pushed into the acne treatment ($80) simply based on my skin type, even though I was coming in for a relaxing experience. Mind you, I don't even have acne with pustules on my face. I have some dark spots and merely 3 beneath the surface ones on my forehead that shouldn't be popped anyways! My analogy to my personal facial experience: it's like going to a restaurant deliberately knowing I want the veggie salad on the menu and being told I must order steak just because I'm a carnivore... My esthetician was more gentle with her verbal communication and explained why she recommended an acne-targeted treatment. I appreciated that. But even with that care, the facial included painful extractions and high-frequency zapping that left me tense--not relaxed. I also didn't receive a facial massage because I have sensitive/acne prone skin--which I understand not wanting to disturb my skin BUT I received a very relaxing facial massage last month (in June) where I live. My skin condition's no different between last month and today ‍--just a difference of place and person treating my skin. Ultimately, this wasn't the facial I came in for. I was eager to leave after my initial interaction. The estheticians are focused on directing clients rather than good ol' plain listening. There's language and maybe a cultural barrier. I've had better, more respectful facials elsewhere--even those tailored to my acne-prone skin. The LLB team should consider balancing skin expertise with sensitivity and customer choice moving forward.
