I always wanted to come here for the past few months but just didn't find the right time. Finally this week, I called and lucky to get an appointment for today. This is my first visit. The esthetician, Joanne aka owner did it for me. She is so professional and gentle. Since this is my 1st visit, she explained the whole process to me prior to doing it. She then analyzed my skin. She provided the best service I ever encountered at a spa that I went before. The place is so cozy, clean and the decoration is awesome. I have already make my next appointment. It has been years since I been to Crystal Palace for a treatment. Partially due to the pandemic but mainly because of scheduling. A lot of the health guidelines have been altered so if you are seeking an appointment, please call the office in advance for details. Basically, due to the social distancing and other restrictions, there will be a limited # of slots. I had to wait a few weeks to get the date/time that I wanted. I was also put onto a waiting list when an appointment was canceled so I can take that time frame. Therefore, it is definitely a lot harder to get an appointment, but was the wait worth it? - oh hecks yeah. Once appointment is made and confirmed - there will be clear directions (please read email) sent to you, with straightforward steps. There are new additions like you cannot wear your shoes upon entering and sanitizing is down to a tee from the moment you step in to the pen that you touch. Fear not, germs are probably not gonna make it past the threshold of this facility LOL! No other clients can be in the same facility when you are present, to make the best of all safety precautions. These are just a tidbits of the new going-ons and it probably takes about hmm.. maybe extra 15-20 seconds of your time - and if that block of time is too tremendous for your schedule and too burdensome for your busy life, then maybe it's best to find somewhere else that comprises less of these troubling steps.. you know, these steps to help save a life or two.. or to save a trip to the hospital.. you know how that goes. I mean, come on - if someone is willing to do the extra work to do all the cleaning and germ-annihilation for you, I do not see why that is even a bad thing. But my point in bringing all this up is to shed some light on how businesses have been impacted by the pandemic - and now there are more expenses and extra work incurred to not only fulfill customer satisfaction but to add on the safety component. It entails more expenses from an owner who has to use disposable everything, and the time/effort for maintenance, and keeping track of the constant changing guidelines with CDC, and other requirements. The disposables include everything from brand new sandals (oh yes you get to keep them too at the end of your service), to the bedding used. It is a big to-do yet to the owners, the health concern for all is a priority. I also am publishing this part of the review so that many businesses utilize the same methods and care for their customers and employees. Crystal Palace can probably be a paradigm for all other businesses (not just in the skincare field) to follow in how they make it work for their clients and themselves. Joanne, the skincare specialist (best of all time ever), was able to introduce new products (not selling them) for the skincare treatment. Although this introduction of new products/services/type of treatment is not a new thing - it is always great to know that there are always something different to try out. Some people enjoy the same old same old - which works too (just need to make that clear in advance) but it's also refreshing when it is a break from the usual routine (as with anything we do in life!). read more

I started coming to Crystal Palace Beauty in the middle of covid (2021) after not getting a facial for months. At the time, my skin was at its worst state due to stress and mask acne. I decided to give this spot a try and I've been coming back monthly ever since! This business is a one woman show. Joanne is the only person here doing facials, and I just wanted to take a moment to talk about how sweet and genuinely caring she is. She has fixed my skin, and it has never looked better. Joanne has never made me felt self conscious about my skin and genuinely cares to improve it. Joanne also asks if you're interested in product suggestions which is nice because i feel like other facial places try to upsell you products and packages. It's not the case here; because I said yes and asked for product recs, she suggests some for me. (And i still use and love all the products she recommends me). In terms of her facials, she never rushes and has great attention to detail. She is also extremely clean and hygienic which i really appreciate. Her facials are a bit longer but totally worth it. I always feel so relaxed coming here. She makes a point not to engage in conversation during the facial so she can focus and you can truly relax :). Love Joanne's facials. She has an incredibly sweet demeanor and works really hard. I'd give her 6 stars if I could for her facials. Scheduling is a nightmare however which is why the overall is just 3. She goes out of town for two months in the summer during break out time and is hard to book an appointment with if you suddenly break out. You have to wait months. Another hard part is her assistant doesn't speak English very well and takes a really long time to ask a question. Things happen, but to reschedule is so difficult, and they have raised their prices now. For the same price I can go to a higher end in midtown, so I no longer go here. read more

Hands down the BEST facial I have ever had. Joanne and Ivy are a wonderful team together. The entire experience so relaxing and peaceful. They make you feel so pampered. Oh and if you are worried about extractions, don't be. Joanne is an expert with extractions. Every time I leave my facial, I head back home to my boyfriend and I am not embarrassed or worried about what my face will look like. You cannot tell extractions were done on my face. Crystal Palace Beauty is a hidden gem, I selfishly almost don't want to leave a review for fear that it will be harder to book appointments. This is the best and thorough facial that you will find in NYC, and certainly for the affordable price points. I spend on average about 1/2 as much as I did at Christine Chin & Ling Spa. Joanne is so thorough and caring and has magic hands- for me, the extractions are very delicate and not painful at all. Her regime has changed my skin, and I am so thankful to her. I'm one of those guys that actually does facials once in a while since I like to treat myself. This place is small and hard to find for new customers since it hidden in Chinatown. For first time customers, it is located right next door to the bank. So go inside and go up into the 8th floor. Ring the door bell and start you time to relax and forget about the stress. My skin felt so dry from the winter weather and since I need to relax my aunt recommend to this location. My aunt has been a long timer customer of the skin care genius Joanne. The location is small and can only fit two customers at a time. So a day at Crystal Palace requires an appointment (48 hour cancellation policy or you pay for the service). The overall experience is relaxing and refreshing. One of the best traits of Crystal Palace is that all customer are handled by Joanne with the help of her lovely assistant Ivy. I highly recommend that if your having skin problem such as acne, scars, breaking out and etc to come here. Joanne take the time to understand your skin and she knows that each person skin is unqiue. If you are a first time customer Joanne will listen to the skin care products that you use and your daily regime for your skin. Then she will recommend product that could be used to have a glowing skin. You will noticed the difference in your skin after coming here. A hidden gem in NYC. Every time I change apartments, my skin changes. Woopdeedoo... This of course leaves me panicking and searching on yelp for a facialist to fix the problem and I have finally come across one that I believe will be my regular facialist for a long time. Joanne is amazing! She really takes her time and you can tell that she cares about her clients. During my facial, she took the time to tell me step-by-step what she was doing and why she was doing it. After the facial, my face felt more toned and less puffy (as she performed her lymphatic drainage massage during the procedure). I have been a customer since its opening... 2003 or 04, and I've never looked back (or anywhere else) since! This place change my family's life. This is not one of those franchise/chain facial places in Chinatown where facials are 30 bucks and each time you visit your face is handled by a new facialist whose credential is questionable. I go to Crystal Palace for facials and once in a while microdermabrasion. Personalized service is ALWAYS by the same lady who is the owner. I wish I can show you my sister's before & after picture but she would kill me. My sister's once problematic skin (blemishes) improved significantly in 6 months after 1st visit, and her skin is so smooth now, no one would believe that she used to have endless pimples. The owner also does back-care. My sister needed to get rid of the red bumps/ pimples on the back before slipping on that bridesmaid dress. The result of the back care was remarkable. Ok, my sis gotta take some credit on the result because the first few visit she went every two weeks, and would religiously follow the care instruction Joanne advised. You do have to be patient and follow her instructions. Besides my sister, my male and female cousins all get their facials from Crystal Palace. Thank You, Joanne! A look at my skin and she was able to tell what my problems were. Everything was explained clearly while she was working on my face. I have very sensitive skin and can't really take pain so, to me, he extraction procedure did hurt a little bit. But hey, no pain no gain. She kept apologizing to me during the process because she knew it would hurt a little bit. But the pain went away within a minute and the mask afterwards cooled down my face. A plus for the very short head and shoulder massage. Looked at the mirror right after and I was very surprised! Not only was there no redness, my face was less puffy than when I walked in 2 hours before. Joanne then talked to me about what I was using on my face daily and recommended some remedies. Bought some of her products for some follow up and healing procedures. 6 hours later and my face is still glowing. Make sure you make your reservations way ahead of time! I got lucky this time given that I only called today to try to make an appointment and someone had just cancelled her appointment. Yes, the price is a bit higher than some other places in Chinatown, but for what you get and the immediate results, it is well worth it. Will definitely be going to Joanne's from now on. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Joanne for almost a decade and her service is something that I cannot miss each time I am in town. I have tried many fancy luxury spas in Paris and throughout Europe, there is no one better than Joanne. She has an in depth knowledge of skincare - I trust her more than a dermatologist! Joanne treats all her client with such personal touch, as if you are her one and only customer. She calls you to remind you about your appointment. If you are late, she is there waiting patiently with a nice cup of tea or water- to ensure that you lay on her bed in a relax mood. And as she starts to do her skin regimen, she will give you an update (both pros and cons) of what is necessary to achieve the best results of your skin. I would also like to highlight that Joanne uses the best products in the market- and the scent is usually divine! Everyone needs an edge in life, especially on the health side as we get older. Joanne and Ivy are one of my secret weapons. I'm the type of guy who's not very diligent with skin care. Cleanser, exfoliator, mask, toner, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen...it boggles my mind. I just want my routine to be efficient, simple and effective; like an electric toothbrush. Apparently, I was getting it wrong with just cleanser. Who knew washing my too face too much can be bad. I've only gone for facials to maintain my "T zone". Joanne and Ivy put a lot of care into their work. While the dozen plus products and techniques they use escape me even though they explain each one, my favorite parts are the facial massage and waking up to the warm head massage after falling asleep waiting for the mud mask to do whatever masks do. Best of all, I now have a lazy 2 step routine that works for me. They deserve this review even if means it might be harder for me to make future appointments. In my never ending quest for the perfect skin care spa, I stumbled upon a little gem known as Crystal Palace Beauty (thanks fellow Yelpers!!) I stopped getting facials about 2 years ago after my usual facial spa switched management & employees, and they were clear they didn't care about my business even though I was a long time customer and had purchased packages from them. My face was going bonkers a few months ago, thanks to the ever changing season, allergies, stress, bad diet and lack of sleep. I needed help, and I needed help fast! I went on Yelp and found this place with all the glowing reviews. Gave them a call, and to my disappointment, the next appointment which worked for my schedule was a little more than a month away. Nevertheless, I still booked that appointment and haven't looked back since. Joanne and her assistant Ivy are two of the most awesome people I know. What's great about this place is that the facials are customized for your needs, and Joanne always do an examination of my face before starting the service and letting me know whats going on and if there's any special care I need to do. While Joanne's facials are on the pricier side, I feel like I certainly get my moneys worth. Best of all? The extractions don't hurt!! I saw a difference the very next day, and my face have vastly improved ever since going to Joanne for facials every month. Sometimes, she would be so busy that I have to wait a month and a half for the next facial (again, because of my schedule), which always bums me out a little bit. Still, I always look forward to going to Joanne because its so incredibly relaxing. Some Dermalogica products were also introduced and recommended to me, but Joanne was not pushy at all in trying to sell me the products. I did purchase the serum & toner that she recommended. She works with me in the sense that she will advise on how to use the products that I already have with the products that she sold me to get maximum benefits out of the two. With that said, I really enjoyed using the products that she recommended and have repurchased when I'm running low. I found this place on a whim and must say that the experience was pleasant. They scheduled me in on a busy Saturday. My cab driver and I had a pleasant conversation on the way, and it trickled into a massage experience. It was a difficult massage and the masseuse did not cut corners. She really engaged with any tension in the body with full force. This may not be for everyone, and I certainly was in pain, yet she was very giving and attentive to the body's ailments. I don't know yet if I want to re-experience that specific massage, but I might want to try a facial because I can tell the owner enjoys her work and Chinatown is the best backdrop! read more

Joanne is the BEST esthetician I've ever been to. My entire life I had terrible skin. Terrible, terrible, I mean AWFUL! I worked at a fancy spa in LA in college, went all over NYC to every spa from Trump to the Ritz to hole in the walls to giving up. I just knew that good skin was NOT in the cards for me. My boss suggested Joanne and I begrudgingly decided to go. I was already too discouraged to ever have hope. But I went because I thought at least I can get my skin cleaned. The moment I walked in she was engaged. She complimented me on my skin, MY SKIN explaining that it just needs a little help, a little love... but I had a good canvas. I thought she didn't realize what she was getting herself into, but I WAS WRONG! She worked miracles! She gave me instructions and products that did EXACTLY what she promised. I was amazed. She checked in on me. Made herself available to answer any questions. She promised in a few months I'd walk around without make-up. I explained I haven't done that since college, maybe even high school... But she assured me that I'd be so proud of my skin I wouldn't want make up over it. She was RIGHT! My skin is incredible! Her business is thriving with a loyal client base because she has great customer service and knowledge. Only advice is to research the products she sells and suggests to you. It is marked up because hey...it is NY retail. Also be sure to agree on what will be done for your treatment and its pricing. I pay 3.5 times more (not including tips) than my old spa and happy to do so...I get great service, products, and the most gentle hands for those (usually) painful extractions. Two reasons 1. My face and neck has been covered in itchy little red bumps since Saturday. It's currently Wednesday. It hasnt subsided. 2. The push really hard to up sell you on both dermalogica products and other treatments. I turned down their eye treatment and hydration treatment four (4) different times during my facial. Her assistant then asks, "Why do you not want these treatments". It's one thing to push, unreasonable to push more than 2x, and completely absurd when you're questioning a client in that manner. Joanne is good, but honestly I'm not sure if the hard up sell or the post facial rash upsets me more. I canceled my next appointment and wont be back. read more

I have been going to Crystal Palace Beauty ever since the owner (Joanne) decided to open up her own shop. I am so glad she did that. She is professional and doesn't talk you into buying her products. Joanne cares about what she does and I love how her extractions are not rough and painful. I've been to places where they try to jam the white/black head out of your face, not pleasant!! My face feels clean and refreshed afterwards at Crystal Palace Beauty. Facials are by appointment only to definitely be considerate if you are late as you push back the person after you. There are only two chairs. Speaking of which, I need to call soon to make my appt to see Joanne. Updating Yelp review from 5 stars to 2 stars on 11/23/15 ..... why you ask?? The surprise treatments that you get during the facial that you never asked for yet you get charged for it. I was expecting to pay $83 dollars for a deep tissue cleansing, but ended up paying $99 dollars? How did that happen? A cool hydration spray is extra $10 bucks, really?? Mist on your face for 1-2 minutes is a rip off. Joanne or her assistant will not tell you that they added an extra treatment so you think that it's part of the facial that you're getting. Cause paying $83 dollars for a deep tissue cleansing is costly enough, especially for Chinatown prices. When I questioned Joanne on the extra cost, she gave a vague excuse that it was just a few extra dollars and immediately tended to another client. Shady business if you ask me. Also, you make your appt for a certain time, yet either she or her assistant will call you multiple times to change the time to see if you can come earlier/later. I know schedules can change to accommodate but when I make my original appt. I like to stick to it... this has happened a few times so it can be very annoying. It's not like I get the extra 10-15 minutes tacked onto my facial appt. I've been going to Crystal Palace for almost 10 years now. It's one of those places that you won't find in any advertisement, but my friends and I would visit Joanne every month. Besides the excellent facials, the tranquility of this place can really let me relax after work. Crystal Palace and Joanne are a Godsend. I've been going for facials here for about 6 months now and Joanne has absolutely transformed my face, which has boosted my confidence. Now I only where make up on weekends for FUN--instead of a way to hide blemishes or pimples. I was fed up with spending money trying products that did not work. I wanted to learn more about my face, what was causing breakouts, and how to better care for it in the long run. After reading some of the other reviews I decided to give Crystal palace a try in June 2012. Joanne began the consultation with a very informative and open discussion and even engaged me and asked me what I was also looking for and gave me several options. She was so kind, sweet, and passionate that you felt confident she knows what shes talking about. She took her time during the session and throughout gave me little tips and info about my face and at home facial care. Ever since that day my life has been transformed. I say Life because once my face began changing and getting better EVEN after the first visit, i began to feel more confident, i no longer hid behind makeup, and my overall appearance improved. I dont have to be shy to hug people close for fear make up will get on their clothing, i can wear alot of white shirts now because no residual makeup, feel free to stroll the area without wondering if ppl are looking at my face negatively--yes life changing. The thing I appreciated most was that she always told you what she was doing on your face each visit, what products she was using, and then confirms with you if this is okay. I haven't found a facialist I love since moving to NYC from LA a year ago...having tried Amore Pacific and a few other high end spas...UNTIL I had my appointment with Joanne!!! She is awesome. The best ever. She really cares and wants to spend time with her clients. After 2 hours or so I left with glowing, even, smooth skin that was less puffy thanks to her lymphatic facial drainage massage. She will give you instructions on how to take care of your skin in between visits and it really does make a difference! Joanne was my facialist for the last three years, during the time I was living in NYC. I can't begin to describe how good she is at her job. I suffered from a slew of digestive issues and stress when I first moved to New York, and my skin suffered from a number of issues including frequent breakouts because of it. On top of that, my skin is very sensitive and I had tried to combat my issue on my own with various products and treatments from other facialists, which only ended up making my skin worse. To be honest when I first met Joanne I was skeptical that anyone would be able to help me. Not only that, I insisted that she not do extractions on my skin because of the negative experiences I had prior. She talked me through her process and her knowledge of skin and skincare products and I finally gave in and let her work her magic on me. Her facials are one of a kind- I've seen many many facialists in my time and have spent varying amounts of money on different treatments. Joanne is so knowledgeable in the skin department and her extractions are not traumatizing and painful, and she does an extremely thorough job. i got a facial here 2 weeks ago (4/12) after reading all the awesome reviews from yelpers , honestly my skin was ok (i have some terrible breakout marks on my chin)i needed a facial for upcoming wedding pictures. overall i enjoyed the facial it was more comfortable than the last facial place i went to. after the facial Joanne recommended dermalogica products.. she really pushed the products even the tinted moisturizer it wasn't until i told her i am allergic to tinted moisturizers and BB creams did she backed off... told me to do my hw and follow the routine that she recommended and WILL call me to schedule another appointment. tried the toner for 3 days my fiancé and i both broke out in red bump stopped using the toner...then today friday afternoon her assistant called me questioned me why i didn't answer my phone and said i have an appointment for sat which i was unaware of yes i have missed the phone calls from random numbers while i was at work I got off at 7pm on thurs too late to call back. she went on and said i have to let them know 48 hours before to cancel an appointment or otherwise she will charge me..charge me what? an appointment tat i did not agree to? i was pretty upset after the phone call that i don't think i will go back read more

I have been taking monthly facials from Joanne and her staff for my July wedding and I had dewy clear skin. Like most posts below, she is really a master of skin and her extractions are not painful and I've always walked away with glowing skin. I've had Chinatown facials before and this is completely different, expect at least an hour and a half of bliss as she will clean, exfoliate, extract, massage your face, shoulders and neck. You are not rushed and there aren't people talking in Chinese in front of you. Joanne will take her time and explain each part of the process for first timers. Whilst you still technically share the room with another person, the atmosphere is very tranquil and clean. I recommend the hydrating facial- love the unique h20 mist that she mists on your skin afterwards! Bring cash and note there may be a cancellation fee so try to keep them informed on all appointments. They will confirm appointment via phone and if you do not confirm, it is considered a cancellation. I'm independently choosing to write this review bc I look forward to coming here each time. I've been here 3 times so far and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I read so many reviews on Yelp and eventually settled on choosing Crystal Palace for all of the positive feedback it has received. There are a lot of businesses and shops in NYC but never really met someone who cares so much for her clientele as Joanne. She and Ivy are both very nice and friendly and accommodating each time I go. They always call ahead about reminders of appointments and was really courteous once when I was few minutes late. Best of all Joanne really tailors her facial therapy to her client's needs. For instance, if there are pimples, she performs gentle extractions and teaches and introduces products that would help clear the skin. She also recommended a lymph massage which she said would help reduce facial puffiness. I've only been here 3 times and noticed a dramatic difference in skin texture and have not had a pimple since which was remarkable since I had a really bad bout of one a while ago. Friends and family have told me they noticed a dramatic difference. It is really pricey and products are expensive but Joanne is conscious about trying to help reduce price yet still preserving the experience and getting the results you are striving for, which she said she will strive to make skin so healthy and even that foundation would not even be needed. The environment is very soothing. She takes only 2 clientele at a time and she takes her time on her clients. The music is peaceful as I'm lulled into a sleep like trance each time.
