My favorite place for a sandwich in Bellingham, incredible bread ( rosemary ) and fresh veggies and ingredients, they are also excellent when it comes to prompt service and friendly people but some of them can get a little grouchy depending on who is working. Some of the sands aren't huge and they can get pricey quickly so order carefully, but stick to the sandwiches with the jalapeno cream cheese and turkey: super delicious. read more

Four star sandwiches, quite delicious, but it took a really long time to make them. It wasn't very busy, and there was only one sandwich order ahead of us. We sat at the counter overlooking where sandwiches were made and the sandwich-chefs seemed to be moving the speed of molasses. I gotta add two points: (1) In addition to the downtown Railroad Ave location and a small place in south-side (11th St) Fairhaven, the place on James Street is equally good (with maybe easier parking for lunch?). (2) The Soups are typically awesome -- some of the best ANYWHERE. For example the Cajun Gumbo is so full of good stuff (red and green peppers, and sausage, etc.) that the "cup" size has to be served in a small bowl. Other soup specials are almost always exceptional and enjoyable. As has been mentioned, their bakery (now moved to a warehouse somewhere?) supplies several local grocery outlets. Whenever I visit out-of-town friends I take some "real-bread" loaves with me. It's a good place to meet anyone for lunch, as the food will be good -- no worries there. read more

This is one of my go to restaurants for lunch when I'm downtown in Bellingham. The food is fresh, organic and locally sourced when possible which is awesome! I usually get the blt & t with avocado and it's awesome. It's so good that I usually want to come back and get another one for dinner! A student at the WWU info center recommended Avenue Bread as a great place to get some lunch before our campus tour. Great aromas walking in the door! My daughter got a wonderful chunky clam chowder and promptly devoured the accompanying bread. The best part of my turkey sandwich was the bread with it's slightly salty crunch to it. A casual, comfortable vibe with bread art on the walls. Free wifi allowed us toughest some quick business done as well. A great experience. To make it a five star experience, it would have to have a bit better maintenance - cleaner tables, bathroom, etc. read more

Great place for breakfast. Was in Bellingham for a sailing regatta for 5 days and went here every day for breakfast and the staff were the MOST friendly staff I have met in a long time. After day two they remembered our names and our orders and were the most pleasant people to meet in the morning. Plus their food was great! Highly recommend this place. read more

I went there on a Saturday for lunch after visiting the farmer's market nearby. I tried one of their sandwiches as I had heard good reviews, however, it did not live up to expectations. It was very overpriced for what I got- $10 for a dry sandwich with no sides. Also, to get water there, they gave me a cup that I had to fill up from a lukewarm jug so I didn't care for that either. It was also quite crowded at the time I went and was constantly being bumped to move or make room for others to get by. I think I'll look elsewhere next time I'm in the area for lunch. read more

We drove around in circles looking for a place for lunch . From outside looking in, it looked like a busy place, so thought it must be good. We went in and ordered the Turkey melt sandwhich to share. I ordered a cup of tomatoe basil soup and my partner went with a cup of lentil soup. By far the best turkey sandwich we ever had ! The lentil soup was so thick,the spoon stood up by itself in the centre of the cup ! We both enjoyed the soup, the sandwhich, and the atmosphere, and will be back for sure next time we are in Bellingham. read more

I wish I could do separate stars for separate items. I usually get to the Fairhaven Avenue Bread several times a month. Sandwiches are wonderful. Recently I paid $6 for a bowl of their chicken rice soup to go, and discovered it was more like water with carrots and celery in it - very little chicken and rice. Very disappointing. At 11:45, they had a line of 4 people and it took 15 minutes to get to the front of the line. If it's lunchtime, would you not want to perhaps staff up to get orders done for people who are on a lunch hour - or who are picking up a called-in to-go order? 4 stars for sandwiches. 1 star for soup. The service? Boy, maybe if I had been in a chatty mood and I ignored the line of people out the door, 3 stars? read more

The one time I wanted a French dip I went in to Avenue Bread at 4:30 PM, knowing that they close at 5:00 PM I figured I would have enough time. So, I proceeded to order the French dip. Stopped in on the way back home from our weekend in Bellingham. Had the Beast breakfast sandwich on the rosemary english muffin and it was simply perfect. Great combination of flavors. Service was outstanding and friendly. Bakery selection was wide. There is plenty of seating and the decor fits perfectly with the funkiness of downtown Bellingham. Took home a crusty loaf of the sea salt rosemary bread and a six pack of the rosemary english muffins to enjoy back at home in Olympia. I give Avenue Bread 4 solid stars for the quality of their food. Been there repeatedly over the past 5 years and have never been disappointed. However, the service at the Downtown store on Railroad has been very lacking of late. I placed 2 orders via Viking Foods a couple of weeks apart, and both orders were wrong, and when I called and spoke with the responsible party, he clearly didn't take it very seriously. The person I spoke with today claimed to be the "manager at the moment" and I believe he is the same person I spoke with the last time my order was wrong. This time he tried to blame it on Viking Foods, which was not the case. Viking Foods on the other hand, corrected my order and refunded my delivery charge, even though it was not their fault. Thank you Viking! Not sure I'll be ordering anything from Avenue Bread for a while as I am very, very disappointed. I hope the customer service person I've been dealing with is educated on how to handle customers better. read more

Awesome Eggenues & savory pastries! They normally have at least one vegetarian soup of the day, if they have not run out, which I have not found one that wasn't delicious - pumpkin corn chowder (yummy). The fresh bread is wonderful and I love their english muffins. read more

This review is for the James St. location. I agree with other reviewers that the downtown location is dark and dirty. I used to like to eat here, but now feel it is overpriced with poor service by the counter girls who are stuck in a haze of Bellingham's hippie's who have money and tip. In the real world they would be at Taco Bell or out of the job. I'm disappointed that the prices have been raised and the free chips with your sandwich are dropped. The soda fountain is always weak, and no matter how often I ask for no pickle on the side of my sandwich, it is always on the plate dripping pickle juice I do not want on my sandwich.
