Avenue is a great space, small and trendy with a nice bar. But overall, it was just OK. It is between 2-3 stars. Nothing special. Cocktails:: mimosas $8 and bloody Mary's $12 which were in align with the rest of pricing in the area. Brunch: The menu was very limited for brunch, but a huge drink menu. We had the biscuits and gravy and it was overly salty and a very small portion (2 small ones) for $14. It comes with potatoes and eggs. The menu was a bit misleading - I would recommend a larger portion or change the menu to read Biscuits, Gravy, Eggs and Potatoes. Our other entree was a breakfast sandwich for $12 (eggs, bacon and toast) - it was expensive, it was worth $7-$8 at most. Service was good, nice people. It's taken me some time to finish this review because I honestly just couldn't find the right words to express my disappointment without coming across vulgar. I've marinated for weeks, simmered for days...still, I'm speechless. Pardon my abbreviated delivery however, it is the only way I can handle this establishments service. *Clears my throat* Ok here goes nothing. Unfortunately, Avenue Restaurant won in a coin toss for Clayton Restaurant Week. I say unfortunately because the entire experience was completely and utterly unfortunate. The server (who's name I do remember but will refrain from indicating) was either half-sleep or just having an off day. On the rare occasions she did show up to the table; mostly she wandered in a totally different area, she'd forget what was requested, i.e. water without ice, napkins, whipped cream, empty dishes and simply asking how the food was. Personally, this was my first visit, I felt unwelcome and neglected by this terrible service. It took so long to place our initial order, then it took sooooo.... long to get the first course we thought we better put in second and third right away. I'm not a server but I do know that when serving set course limited menus it is best to get the entire order, courses 1-3 at the start of the dining experience so that it flows accordingly. I was so irritated by the poor service I didn't enjoy a bite of my food or even take in the ambience. There were a couple notables at Avenue: Genie, a doll who recognized a pile of dishes on our tabletop and stopped while in route to attending to her own guests tables to remove them before the roaches gathered. Paul was another employee was a life saver as he made sure our food was brought out, asked if we needed anything and located our "actual server" when she was missing in action. I asked to speak with a manager and explained in great detail how I felt about the service. Bryan, head chef asked what he could do but did not seem genuine in my opinion. Five stars for the food! This was, no joke, the best butternut squash soup I've ever had. Could the trick be using no cream? Really? Amazing. For the main course, I had the boneless beef short ribs mustard crusted with red wine sauce. Amazing, except the mustard flavor was inconsistent, which I was glad for. Most of the bites was without the flavor, and the couple bites that did were very overpowering. Simple green beans that accompanied, and the potato cake, were simple and yummy. The server seemed a little off. Seemed annoyed at first that we came in without a reservation (we'd all flown in, dropped our things at the hotel, and basically turned around and went to dinner. We dined at Avenue before attending John Lithgow's one-man performance at the Touhill, on a Saturday night. The D's had been there before, but Ms T and I were first timers. I had checked the menu on-line before we went so that I would have some idea of what I wanted. At first I thought the menu was limited (and I am the one who complains when the menus are too large). But after really analyzing it, I found plenty to choose from. In fact what I found was a restaurant that has focused on a smaller menu and does a very good job with what they serve. All of the food was excellent, well-seasoned, attractive and delicious. As an example, Mr D ordered Roast Breast of chicken. Sounds boring right? It was beautiful and he commented on how juicy and flavorful it was. It was sliced like you might see a grilled lamb or pork tenderloin and was served with mushroom risotto. Ms T had Schnitzel which I sampled and found to be very good as well. It was moist and flavorful, clearly not something deep fried, but properly seasoned and lightly paneed. It is served with asparagus and a potato cake. Ms D and I both were attracted to the Provencal Beefe Daube. I have been hungry for Beef Stew this winter and this was considerably better than the batch I recently made. The beef was well braised to perfect tenderness without being turned into crumbles or shreds. The vegetables were tender, but not mushy and the stew was very flavorful. It is served on fettuccine. I could certainly order any of the dishes that we had on this night, again. And there are more things to try. I really liked Avenue and am going to award five stars for this experience. I don't often do that for an upscale place on the first visit. I really could not find anything to whine about. Although not divey in price range it was not a budget buster either, for what we had. And......it was refreshing to not have to listen to a holier-than-thou, organic, local, gluten free, free-range sermon. Everyone does it, so it is no longer special or a selling point. This was my first time eating here and I can honestly say that it was nice. I loved the atmosphere and the decor of the place. It was my best friends 30th birthday and it was a good place to have it at. I was very shocked and impressed that the chef came out and spot to us and asked us how was everything. That was the highlight my night, I think more restaurants need to do that. The food was excellent and the only thing that botheres me was that my boyfriend and my food took a long time to come out. 3-3.5, but b/c of all the low ratings I felt incline to round up for this restaurant across from First Watch. So the space is beautiful and it has outdoor seating, but for numerous reasons - it is never never full. There is a bar with one TV, but it isn't big compared to the restaurant. 1) The bartender is very very friendly - so I can't speak to the other horrible reviews on service. He was attentive, the food came out on time, and he checked in with me either though the bar was full. 2) The food is meh and good on some items. 3) Happy Hours until 6pm. $5 house wines, $5-$10 appetizers 4) The brie fig tomato jam sandwiches -sounded amazing, but it isn't anything I would not have done in my alma mater dorm room. It was 2 pieces of very underwhelming bread with brie and a side of what I thought would be amazing homemade jam- and it was dehydrated fruit/tomatoes? It just wasn't worth it as a paid appetizers unless it was something on the house. 5) Meh on the Happy Hour French Dip w/o Dip sandwich 6) I did like my small gnocchi appetizer as a light entree. It was actually perfect and the gnocchi was not overly heavy. 7) Bolognese was good - but the homemade pasta was the highlight over the sauce. 8) Apple turnover made in-house with all the homemade sorbet/ice-cream was decent - but not large enough to share. Met a friend here for dinner. She had been staying nearby to visit family & highly recommended this place for every meal. The waiter was very personable and the dining room comfortable. Had the schnitzel which was okay and I passed on dessert, which my friends said was exceptional. Would go again if I was in the area, don't think I'd make a special trip. My husband and I were in the area a couple of weeks ago, and we ended up being taken out to lunch here at Avenue. From the reviews and what I saw at other tables, I regret not ordering brunch, but I have no major complaints about lunch, either. Father-in-law had a burger and salad; it looked to be on the dry side, but he seemed pleased with it. My husband ordered the chicken caesar salad and he said it was good, but not the best he's had. I had a portobello sandwich, and it was probably the best option of the three-- it actually had too many toppings which made it fall apart, and it could've used a more flavorful sauce, but the portobello was cooked perfectly and the brioche bun was very good. The coleslaw had an interesting flavor to it. Not my favorite lunch, and I'm guessing there's better options in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't turn down a repeat visit. read more

The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is that the food while good, was pretty average. But the service. Wow. I had a friend's surprise party thrown here and the staff was PHENOMENAL and SO KIND. We overstayed our welcome a bit past the closing time and instead of rushing us out (like most restaurants would) they let us enjoy the time to finish celebrating our friend. I had called like 15 places to make a reservation for a large party and no one else could accommodate. Avenue Restaurant has been my " go to" restaurant for the past 14 years . Consistently excellent food . Well managed. Owner/ chef out greeting customers when time allows .Many long time employees that are genuinely friendly and knowledgeable . Parking is a breeze with the Clayton parking lot across the street. Bartenders are always knowledgeable, amiable and pour a heavier than normal drink imho .Nice gregarious group usually at bar at night. Rarely a crowded bar .They serve breakfast during the week and it " blows away" what nearby First Watch has to offer . Imho Excellent morning " power " breakfast place .Note in morning, City of Clayton does not check meters til 8:45am ,so don't waste your money on expensive Clayton meters . Same thing after 4:45 p.m during week. No worries on weekends. read more

Great new addition to Clayton. Bryan Carr has combined the best of Pomme and Pomme Wine Bar and the synergistic effect is x 10. For the first time in a long time, I wanted to order everything on the menu because there were so many good choices. Ended up with Mussels and cassoulet which were both amazing. Avenue even has good bread which is lacking at a lot of places in town. The place has a tremendous amount of energy. The service can be a little slow so don't go in expecting McDonalds service. Go there to dine and hang out. The Bar has sports on so there's really something for everybody. The wine list has good selections and fair pricing with something at every price point without a telephone book of choices. I tried the Grilled Ham & Swiss which hit the spot on a cold day. They use nice thick slices of Ham which brought a classic sandwich to the next level. The fries had a nice seasoning on them that I couldn't quite place. I liked the atmosphere here, while they can hold a good amount of people there were different sections making it feel smaller than it really is. Great addition to Clayton, I will be back! read more

Well, at least this was paid for by gift cards. The drinks were fine. My wife found a Chardonnay, and I a Manhattan. That's where the fun sort of came to a halt. The apps were ok. The mushrooms over the baguette, is solid. The French Onion Soup, was melted cheese on top of water, but hey, it's freakin cheese. The short ribs that my wife loved in the past under different owners, now tasted like my nana's roast, and nana was a horrible cook. My ham and cheese sandwhich tasted like something I would get in the pre-made section at Schnucks. Fries that came with it, I ate them all. But the worst part, was the side our waitress recommended. We were sold an artichoke and veggie mix sautéed in butter. You could sautée my shoe in butter and I would eat it. Instead, we got out of a can artichoke something, where it had been soaked in vinegar. Not only had our waitress lied, or been lied to, but now I am forced to buy more booze to get this shitty taste out of my mouth. We still pressed on; mainly because we are a couple of fat asses, and this was free because of the gift cards. We ordered bread pudding. The look on my wife's face after eating this was similar to what I see after we have sex. A look that says, "well, it wasn't horrible, but I might not do that again until I get really drunk". Arrived early for our dinner party of 6, and made new friends at the bar while we waited. Fantastic ambiance. Excellent selection of appetizers and main courses- especially unique ones. Our group shared 5 appetizers before dinner and much to my delight, I relished them all. Even my super picky better half enjoyed them. Dinner was a culinary delight. I went with Steak Frites- always a classic. Dessert: Apples for Olivia with the homemade ice cream never disappoints. Service: I liked that the service was just right. Wanting brunch without an hour wait my bf and I decided on Avenue. Only a 5 or less minute wait for a table 12:30 on a Sunday. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the mushroom and spinach omelet witch comes with potatoes and fresh fruit. Took about 30 minutes to get our food. They must have been short on potatoes as they only gave us about 6 pieces. The fruit must have sat under a warmer because it was warm and not that "fresh". The omlet and service won the 3 stars. read more

SHOCKINGLY INCREDIBLE BRUNCH! I'm giving this a 5 star brunch review (my dinner experience was less than thrilling). I stopped in here with a friend last weekend and had a truly wonderful experience. The waitress could not have been more fantastic, and the biscuits and gravy were actually some of the best I've had at a St. Louis brunch venue. We couldn't even hear the people at our table. Terrible! But the restaurant is good - so eat inside. We stopped in early on a Friday night with our two kids, aged 6 and 3. We were seated immediately and told about the specials. My wife asked if the server recommended the steak frites ($36) or the chicken ($24). He said the chicken was incredible, and he was right. I had the sea bass special, which was also excellent. The mushroom risotto was creamy and delicious. The kids meals were brought out early, which was greatly appreciated. For dessert, the banana chocolate chip ice cream was the bomb. Host Your Private Party at Avenue-You Will Be Glad That You Did! We hosted a rehearsal dinner for 75 followed by a welcome party for a larger number of out-of-town guests at Avenue Restaurant prior to our son's wedding in Clayton last month. We could not be more pleased with every aspect of our experience. The food was exceptional--Chef/Owner Bryan was very accommodating during our planning process and was eager to work with us to create a unique and delicious menu that was personal to the bride and groom. He was also most helpful in assisting us with wine selections that were within our budget and complemented the food perfectly. Nathan, the Bar Manager, was quick to respond to our questions and also gave our requests regarding the cocktail party and later reception his full attention. From our first meeting with Events Manager, Vicky Tano, we knew that we were in good hands. No detail was too big or too small for her to address. (This was particularly appreciated because most of the planning had to be done from a distance since we live on the East Coast.) She not only acted as the point person on all things Avenue, but went that extra mile in coordinating our rental of AV equipment and engaging the services of a local florist. The transition from seated dinner to the stand-up welcome dessert/cocktail reception that followed was seamless, due to the "all-hands-on-deck" approach that the Avenue Team employed that evening. We received many many compliments about the "great vibe", "great food", "great venue" and overall "great party" that all in attendance experienced and we could not be more grateful to the team at Avenue for making it happen. read more

Went for Sunday brunch. Waitress was super friendly and we were seated right away, sad part was it took a long time to get our food, waitress had to come back and ask us what our order was because the ticket may have gotten lost, but she was unsure (only reason i am not giving full rating). Noisy environment but it was because of all the guests talking, laughing and being happy so it wasn't bad noise. I had the daily omelet which was bacon, peppers, and cheese and I got the fresh made biscuits which came with potatoes and fruit and I was happy with my choice as it was all fresh tasting. My husband ordered grass fed beef burger and fries, the burger was cooked perfectly and the garlic aioli went well with it and the fries were good too. I was extremely disappointed in this place. I walk in, emailed reservation confirmation and they didn't even have my name down. Then, I find a live bug on my table on its back. It was like a tiny cockroach. I wanted to walk out right away. And when we tried to ask the waiter if he could do something about it, he totally ignored us and kept walking. Not gonna lie, we were pretty loud saying excuse me! Another thing, was there was a standing fan blowing on us almost the whole dinner when it was 65 degrees out. When I got my food, I was impressed but the service was terrible. The waiter didn't even disinfect the area the bug was on when we asked him to, so we did it ourselves.
