Eek! I wish I read these reviews before booking my car at this Avis location. As others have mentioned, we got there and waited in line for about an hour! This was after waiting at Pier 91 for pickup for over an hour. On top of that, the van could only hold me and my husband (there was another large party), so my parents were stuck at the pier while we got the car. The service at the office was horrible. It was so slow, and they didn't seem to mind keeping their customers waiting. One of the folks in line was waiting just to return a car! When I asked the agents what the address of their office was, they didn't know! I went out to the street to figure it out myself. When I asked what the zip code was, they again didn't know! We went with Avis because they would allow us to pick-up and drop-off the car at different locations with no additional charge. This saved us a bunch of money (it was about $100 cheaper than Alamo). We also chose them because they said they would pick us up from the Cruise Terminal...we didn't know it would turn out to be such a hassle. We only had a short time in Seattle, and half the day was over before we got our car. I did notice a sign in the office that said the office is independently operated. This was my first time using Avis, so I'm not sure how this compares to the other locations. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. If I could give negative stars that would be even better. I had a reservation for 0900 but waited in line for an hour and twenty minutes with only four other customers in front of me. I booked online to save time but the staff moved so slow it was pointless. NO up to date tech in this location (still using dot matrix printers), everything done manually and the staff does NOT care if you wait. The previous day I rented from Enterprise around the corner. I was in and out in under two minutes. Avis wasted and hour and a half of my life I'll never get back. If I could use profanity here I would! Everyone at this branch needs to be fired! I did not have any of the experience that the others have had here! I walked in, had only one person in front of me, who was dealt with very efficiently. We got upgraded to a Mustang! and were off within about 10 minutes or so! The only thing is, I drove the car up to Vancouver and back and got back after 5pm, so I had to drop off the car at the airport, which was about an hour total out of our way, but not too painful. read more

Looks like a lot of people have had the same bad experience. When we picked up the car, we clearly said it was a personal rental and was quoted a price to buy gas from Avis. When we returned the car, the gentleman asked if the rental was business or personal. We replied "personal", and without saying a word, he proceeded to charge us a higher price for gas without explaining to or telling us. When we looked at our receipt, we asked why the price had gone up. He said it was because it was a personal rental so the gas charge was higher, and he would not let us go out and fill up the tank ourselves because he said that he'd already closed the transaction. We asked for the manager's name and he just pointed at the receipt. Then he told us not to bother him anymore and turned to the next customer as we tried to find the manager's info on the receipt, who as it turned out was the lady who had set the original price when we picked up the car in the morning. The next morning we were able to get the price adjusted by the manager, but due to the extremely poor treatment we received, I will never rent from here again. FYI: There's a National Car rental one block away and they even allow after hours returns, unlike this Avis location. read more

The staff here were professional and helpful. However, this place is horribly set up for its operation. My usual experience with Avis preferred is that I just pick my car from the mobile app and drive away, no queues, no paperwork, no hassle. This place however, was not equipped with any of these modern way of doing business and the staff even has to go out and drive the car out for every customer, leaving service time per customer ranging from 20 to 30 mins. There is nothing wrong with the staff working here but Avis, shame on you for setting up rental location with such a low standard and inefficiency. I would not recommend anyone renting from here unless you absolutely have to. Try to come here first thing in the morning by their opening time, otherwise plan a 45mins to 1.5hours of waiting time. read more

Bad experience. First off they didn't have the car for the level we reserved, which normally means free upgrade to a much better vehicle. We got upgraded to an SuV, which only cost us about a third more in gas prices. Yeah it's nice having a slightly larger vehicle, but not at the gas prices these days. I asked for a credit for the extra cost and they refused.. I guess $40 is too much to part with. Secondly, we crossed a toll bridge. They catch your vehicles' tag and send the bill in the mail, but in this case it went to Avis and I was charged the toll plus $3 a day (for EVERY day) administration cost, even though we drove over the toll road one time. I called several different people in the chain of customer service and they said there was nothing they can do. I hate when people try to scam you out of your money. I'll be damned if I ever rent from this company again. Along with all the other complaints, I would HIGHLY suggest not renting from this place or Avis in general again. I've had a hugely better experience with Alamo. read more

Pulled up and was ushered in by a guy in the garage who was highly impatient that I didn't immediately pull into a space in the garage from a busy street. Once inside, the office was packed with a long line. Luckily, since I was dropping off, a guy at the counter asked if anyone was dropping off, so I got to go to the front. However, here I was rudely informed that not filling the tank myself would result in a $12/gallon charge (yeah I knew it was going to be high but THAT high is ridiculous), so I headed back out to fill up. Once back, I had to wait a while in the line because the desk staff was overworked. When I finally was able to return the car, there was some back and forth as they asked me pointed questions about whether I was an authorized driver and threatening added charges despite us having already addressed this issue at our pickup location (in another location). In the end, no additional charges, but not the greatest customer experience here. read more

If the option was available, I would have rated them 0 Stars. First of all, I had scheduled to pick up an "economy rental". When I got to Avis, there was not an economy car available for me. They went to pick up a car from another avis location, they locked the place up leaving me waiting outside for approximately 30-40 minutes. They eventually come back and try to process the ford focus so that I can rent it out, but it turns out it had a hold on it "safety recall" I think she said. By now I have been at Avis location for over an hour. The only option she said would be to take the fiat for now, and then come back the next day to grab another economy car that was able to be dropped off at the SEA airport. I come back the next day, and it literally took 2 hours to get the Ford Focus. They are severely understaffed and obviously do not have enough cars on location. And also, I was really displeased that when I got into the ford focus it did not smell very pleasant inside there was remnants of a sticky residue (most likely from a spilled drink). It was pretty bad. But, honestly I had no more patience to go back and complain. I was only in seattle for 3 days, and just having to come back and forth to Avis and the car renting experience was just so time consuming and unpleasant. If there were less than one star I would give it. LONG story short as possible. Left a brand new sports coat on the back seat of the car. Called two hours later to tell them..but they wouldn't answer the phone. Not closed, just wouldn't answer. Tried several times. (Kept records of times) The next morning, called again. They said the car wasn't there, it had gone to SeaTac airport for service. Called there, SeaTac, ..they acknowledged they "had" the car but couldn't "find" the car. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS WENT ON FOR FIVE DAYS?? They have a car, but can't FIND the car. Seriously??? Of course, by the time they found the car, my brand new (just bought it for a cruise) sports coat was STOLEN by an AVIS employee. I have written, and called, you name it, no response from Avis. Bottom line..AVIS has a thief in there midst and don't even care enough to get to the bottom of it. read more

I reserved a car online, and took a cab to pick it up. The guy took my credit card, license, and SSN and then, told me he couldn't rent to me unless I gave him another card. I only had my debit with the Visa which has served me well. So I asked if there was anything he could do, he got hella sketchy and nervous but insisted that there's nothing he could do. Total bullshit. So now I've got to pay $100 to take a cab, cuz I'm stranded without a choice. He tried to pawn me off on some other sketchy company....forget it. DON'T COME HERE! We rented a vehicle for our trip on February 6th, 2012. My memory of how this trip began will unfortunately be engraved with the pompous fat head of Ashon K. This employee went out of his way to be rude, impatient, pushy, and completely uninformative. Simple questions about the vehicle we would be driving could not be answered. They were countered with him typing, staring off into space, and then followed up with barking orders for an upgrade. Again, this one individual managed to ruin my rental experience as well as the start to our vacation that couldn't be made up by the rest of your staff who were genuinely nice and helpful. Way to go Avis! You placed the worst of your lot in the front to represent you poorly. read more

I've used this particular Avis branch several times over the last two years and the service has always been great and the prices are often more reasonable than heading all the way to SeaTac. Note that the base prices are always cheaper at the airport, but once you add in all of the fees and taxes, you get more bang for the buck renting here off 5th Ave. read more

Our flight got in early and when we checked in at 10.30 they tried to change us 65 dollars for the 90 minutes. We were already paying for a full extra day. The company reported explained that if we pId for a full tank we would only be charged for the gas that was used at regular prices . However we had to pay for the full tank that was in the car . They had the wrong car assigned to us a 15 passenger van rather than a mini van. After getting this fixed we went to the lot and there large cargo van . We finally found the mini van but the van was grey not red . We could not find the keys. What a mess read more

AVIS, You only try harder, WITHOUT ANY RESULTS!!! I decided to rent a car for a day with AVIS during my stay in Seattle, this past long weekend (Memorial Day). I am a Avis Preferred member and while booking on Avis.com, this location was marked to provide Preferred service which means, one can pick up the car from the parking lot, without standing in the line. Well, since they are in downtown area, there is no parking lot but actually an underground parking garage where they park their cars. Their folks have to pull up the car before we can hop into them. However, when I arrived at this location, I found a long line that ended well outside their shop. Did not find a separate counter for Preferred service. There only one guy behind the counter who was super slow. Had to wait for an hour before I got to the counter. Never had to wait so long in the line before for a rental car. Get some efficient guys, AVIS. There was a guy in front of me, who had to wait the same amount of time, just to return the car. Poor fella, he could have returned the car at the SEATAC airport and hopped onto sound transit back to downtown. That would have been faster for him. Never again, AVIS. read more

I had an upsetting experience at Avis. I needed to rent a car for 2 days for some local driving. I was told that I should plan on returning it full, because there would be a hefty charge if I did not. I drove it only 31 miles, dutifully bought 1.2 gallons of gas, filled out the form, told the clerk that I had done that, and left with the receipt. The next day I glanced at the receipt and saw an extra $13.99 with some comment about 75 miles. I called and was told that if I traveled less than 75 miles I would be billed $13.99 for gas. I said that I had returned it full, and was told that it was required that I show the receipt for gas (which would prove nothing since I could have put 1.2 gallons of gas into my wife's car. I said no one had told me, and the clerk said it was on the contract (the one with the tiny print) that I had signed. I said I told the clerk when I was returning the car that I had filled it, and he did not ask me for the receipt. The clerk's supervisor supported his position that without the receipt they could do nothing. I was ready to take my complaint to a higher level but found my receipt, faxed it in, and decided to write this review instead. read more

They kept insisting we could fit in a smaller vehicle with our luggage and be comfortable but that was totally a no go. I would have been having to sit on top of luggage with a arm draped over driver, leg over passenger, and same over luggage in back. But they were really nice and eventually were able to provide us with a larger vehicle which was nice and comfy. The suv was in great condition and rode well. read more

This was an unbelievable poor experience. I have rented a number of cars for work and almost always it is a standard non-descript experience and interaction. However; this Avis has some of the rudest employees with which I have ever interacted. The pick process was slow, inefficient, and poorly run, but overall not a zero star experience. The drop off was! Nestor, the associate asked the usual drop of questions about mileage and the gas tank. I checked the tank before returning the car and it still read full. While I had not filled the tank within the last mile of the return it was not long since I had. He would not stop arguing with me that the tank truly read full. He finally would not sign off on the car until proving that it was not "completely" full and told me to watch him fill the tank. He was able to get almost one gallon in so then proceeded to call me a liar about saying the tank was full. While I guess it wasn't "completely" full the meter on the dash read full and I am pretty sure the over 400 miles to empty the next driver would have received would have been sufficient. I would never rent a car from this agency or honestly company again after experiencing how they treat their customers. read more

When I returned the car the attendant in the garage took the car keys and told me to take the mileage inside and they will give me a receipt. Seriously!?!? What car rental company makes customers go to the front counter to turn in the vehicle. Back in line I go. Wait, wait, wait. Finally I just told the front desk staff the miles and left. And the agent was so rude I had to wait in line, mind you I had 5 luggages as I was getting ready to go on a cruise. After about 20 minutes to find out that no they did not offer shuttle just today,that day. I was then charged a late fee because I waited in line and there was only 1 person working on a Sunday. PREDATORY. If your credit check is declined (after you have paid them online, of course), you will be charged a no show fee and then not given a refund. You should not have to hire a lawyer to read their terms of service, which apparently contain a provision that in the event of a car not being rented to you, they'll keep your money unless you beg corporate for it back. The guy working the desk told me I had to call corporate to get a refund, even though he sitting around doing nothing. It's been a week and I'm still $100 short of what I paid, because of a 'no show fee' (even though I showed up). Take your business elsewhere! There are lots of rental places nearby, and Enterprise isn't nearly as scummy. read more

I have rented from this location a number of times over the years and always had good service. For my most recent rental on 09/18/10, the first car they gave me smelled like smoke. I went in an complained and without hassle provided me with a different car. The rental agent was also very helpful pointing that I could return the car the Airport if necessary to avoid a second day of rental if I could not get back to the Belltown location by 5pm. He also pointed out that if I went less than 75 miles to make sure I present the receipt for gas otherwise Avis would automatically charge me. While I may not agree with all of Avis's policies, the agent made sure I knew how to avoid the extra charges. read more

When this place is busy, there is just no way for them to handle business. It took about an hour to pick up a car, which is totally unacceptable. I had the car reserved for 10am, showed up at 10:10, and my rental agreement shows that they printed it at 10:47. However, it was at least 10 minutes after that that it took for them to actually get me the car, fill it up with has, and hand it over. In addition, they don't offer preferred service at this location. The whole point of preferred service is that when your preferences and cedit card are pre-verified, you don't have to go through a whole dialogue with the desk, saving everyone time. When asked about this, they said if I wanted preferred service, I could go to the airport location, which in Seattle is a long way away. When it's not busy, this is not a bad place, but they can't handle any increased volume. There were about 15 people in line, and it took 40 minutes to deal with that. Staff was very impatient, easily get irritated if you ask them more than two questions when we went to pick up our car. And they didn't even bother to explain to us why they didn't have the minivan we reserved. Their collegues at the airport location over-estimated the amount of gas needed to be refilled since we were running out of time and didn't fill up ourselves. The meter indicated slightly less than 3/8 empty, but they just marked 1/2 empty. It's supposed to be measured by 1/8 increment. We got charged more than $130 for leaving the gas tank 3/8 empty. read more
