We went here for lunch after hearing great things and were excited to check it out. The restaurant has a casual feel and colorful decor, feeling unique to the neighborhood with its open style kitchen and aesthetic. We liked the fast casual feeling, with polite and prompt service. It felt like the type of place where you would order and pay at the register then have a number on the table waiting for your order, which we think may have better fit the ambiance but certainly not a negative overall. The food was fantastic. We split a falafel plate and basar hummus (hummus with ground beef and toasted nuts in the middle). The falafel was perfect, with a crisp but not overly fried bite. They give you the fixings to create your own pita sandwiches, it was delicious but the ingredients felt like they could have been chopped up more for ease. The hummus in the basar was incredible and really a standout as a smooth and creamy dip. The meat was underwhelming, though not bad just a bit under seasoned. Finally, the pita was amazing- soft, fluffy and warm. Everything you could want in a pita. You get 1 pita per meal and can order ($) more. Hummus as a side? Of course. As a dip for carrots and celery? For sure. Hummus as the main course? I wasn't too sure...until I came to Aviv. This is a light filled, cozy restaurant with some tables and a bar you can sit at and watch the chefs work. It's reminiscent of a sushi restaurant where you can watch the magic happen. We strolled in on a Saturday and while it was packed, we snagged a spot at the bar. The server was prompt, took our orders, and dropped off drinks with some hamutzim (pickles with pickled olives/peppers). We ordered the masabacha which was a hearty hummus mixture where the chickpeas aren't fully mixed. We also got the falafel sandwich which was so refreshing to get some fresh delicious falafel that you see being made right there. Both were superb, and we needed to get an extra pita (which was fresh baked, so light, and so good) to help mop up the rest of the masabacha for a great meal. Surprisingly filling, and while you don't feel like you want much hummus afterwards, it's satisfy your mediterranean/middle eastern cravings. To me, an establishment deserves 5 stars if it's the best in their category. For Aviv, it's a solid restaurant and the best (if only) hummus bar I know of, for a well deserved 5 stars. read more

A very solid 4 stars summarized as good food, but high prices. I expected to enjoy the hummus here the most, but actually it was the falafel I liked best. It was crisp, flavorful, and reasonably priced. The high price of the hummus just didn't match up for me. The pita was also quite fat and fluffy, as opposed to thin and dense. I am a regular at The Grinning Yogi and live in south Cap Hill, so naturally I walk by Aviv all the time. It is always packed with people, and eventually I had to see what the fuss was all about. I love hummus, not just because it's f*king good but also because it's pretty workable into whatever weird diet trend I am currently following, and I am lucky enough to have a friend who is equally as excited about hummus as I am. When I write reviews on Yelp, I often comment on the service in a way to explain that, "as long as it wasn't awful enough where it distracts from the food, I'm satisfied." However, this is the first place in Seattle (consistent with the Seattle freeze) where I noticed how exceptional the service was. I really wish I got the name of the woman who seated us because she was such a delight, with a huge smile and friendly attitude. In addition, the server was very friendly and checked on us many times (but not too many times) throughout the meal to make sure we had everything we needed. Color me impressed! We ordered the Hummus Basar as an appetizer. From research it seems that this combination of shredded beef and hummus is a Lebanese tradition, not an Israeli one, but wow was this delicious! Even better than the hummus alone was the pita which was SO soft and warm and a necessary piece to the Hummus Basar experience. I also had a Limonata which was freshly made with mint (NOT the drink from the can which I expected!) For the meal, I got the stuffed falafel with, surprise, hummus and it was wonderful. It looked super ready to explode when it came to the table but it stood together very well. The falafel was not anything special but complimented the hummus well. All in all, really enjoyed my hour at Aviv. It's super well located and the servers are super friendly. Very cute little restaurant in cap hill! Came here with a friend on a Thursday night around 6pm and didn't have to wait. The place is pretty small and only has a 10(or fewer) tables. The menu is also pretty small, and most of the items have hummus in them. I was mixed on what to order because I wanted something with hummus, pita, and falafel. Thankfully, they had two great options to satisfy my craving. I ended up getting the falafel hummus, which came with a generous amount of falafel and lots of delicious hummus. The pita was so soft and pillowy. My friend got the mushroom hummus, and she loved hers, too. The portion size was pretty large and I ended up taking home a few falafels and some hummus. My only complaint is that the prices were a little high for what I was ordering. I thought the prices would be a little bit lower because we didn't order any meat, but I still ended up paying around $22 with tip. Overall, I still had a good experience and I'd come back to try another dish. read more

This place is so good! I do not live close enough to go regularly, otherwise I would be there every week or at least ordering takeout. But I always look for an excuse to stop by. Overall we liked the food. It was not as revelatory as we had been sold on by some friends, but it was solid. Aviv is hilariously located next to a 7 eleven, but a quick glance at the welcoming entrance and you'll be enticed to at least check out their menu. My friend and I had scouted it out in advance though, as it is dangerously close to my house and found the menu to be well priced. It's a small space but very brightly colored and has a warm energy. The kitchen is open and behind the bar seating. At around 5:30 on Friday, it was surprisingly not busy. The staff was all very friendly, even locating my precious Star Trek pin that had fallen off. The menu is small, but there wasn't a thing on there that didn't sound delicious. We got Malus ginger beers, which were the best I've ever had despite the intimidating label. I opted for the basar hummus and my friend got the plated falafel, all of which comes with the hamutzim and some of the fluffiest pita I've ever seen. Every flavor was so familiar and yet so new that the meal was a pleasant surprise. Because of the newness, I was at first offset by the soft flavors of the hummus and shawarma beef, but quickly found myself finishing it with delight. I also tasted the falafel, which was much bolder but every bit as wonderful. Lastly, though a small part of the meal, the pickles are absolutely not to be overlooked. I'm so glad this place exists. I love the vibe. I love the vintage T-Slam music (can't help it, I grew up on it). That said, I don't think it's up to the same standards of other American-run Israeli restaurants I've been to: * Menu is surprisingly basic/generic. It could use more variety and creativity, e.g. a daily or monthly special? * A nice touch on the deli hummus could be to top them with chickpeas and olive oil/etc, as our neighborhood hummus joint did in Tel Aviv. Esp. when you're already paying $1/oz! * It's surprisingly pricy for what you get -- even compared to Israeli restaurants in NYC. If you're paying $13 or $14 for hummus ($16-$17 after tax/tip), there shouldn't be an extra charge for some chickpeas on top and another charge for schug. * As others noted, the masabacha has been outright nasty. Not sure what happened. The Israeli culinary scene is a special thing. I hope that, like Portland, we get some good competition in our Israeli street food scene, capturing more of that specialness. Would I taking my friends here if it were in Tel Aviv? Afraid not. But we're in Seattle, so I'm glad we have this place. read more

Right across the street from Kaiser, this restaurant is tiny, hip, and very cute. I came in for an after work dinner with a Friend on a Friday night. The space is tiny, but there is tons of natural light, which makes for a happy and fresh ambience when you walk in. We were told to seat wherever we liked and ordered from their small menus printed on paper. I ordered the falafel, plated, with a ginger beer. My friend ordered the basar hummus with a ginger beer. The service was quick and our food came out looking as beautiful as it smelled. We immediately appreciated that the pitas were warm and fluffy, dipped in the nutty & creamy hummus, followed by a tangy & delicious pickle = heaven. I don't remember the brand of ginger beer they served, but it was the best I've had! This is a welcome, healthy, and affordable addition to the Capitol Hill neighborhood. We passed this spot a few weeks ago before they opened and couldn't WAIT for the opening! My Israeli boyfriend is extremely opinionated (I mean what Israeli man isn't ) so the bar was high. It's a small space, but very clean and cute. We came at an odd hour, 4pm, but the place was completely full up - with more Israelis, so we knew it should be good. What we ordered: -Hummus Masabacha, half creamy hummus/half warm whole chickpeas topped with garlic and lemon juice -Hummus Basar, which is a spiced ground beef topping -Falafel in tahini We didn't order the Hummus Pitriot (mushrooms) but a serendipitous mistake in the kitchen meant we now had 3 hummus plates for 2 people.....and we managed to eat it all. The standouts were the perfect pitas, falafels, the tahini sauce, hummus pitriot, and the service, as they were all extremely gracious despite the challenges of opening weekend in a family run restaurant. Everything was very authentic - from the tools they used to spread the hummus and make the falafel balls, to the free opickles and olives. A new restaurant in the northern part of Cap Hill next to some other heavy hitters. Luckily, they serve as a unique offering in this area with the Israeli menu. The establishment is bright, modern, and breathes postivitiy. The staff take on the same characteristics, which is saying a lot since we came close to closing time. I'm appreciative of their friendly service. The place makes amazing falafel! I'm always on a hunt for the perfect compacted chickpea ball and Aviv is definitely some of my favorite. It was seasoned well. The outer shell cooked to a crispy, dark golden brown while the inside displayed bright green hues from the herbs and maintained a slight mushiness. You could tell it was fried at a temperature and rate that allowed for a excellent execution. The pita bread was equally as delicious. Baked to a lovely, pillowy softness and served fresh which complimented the tahina and hummus. I could have eaten ten more. The tahina was lightly salted to bring out the natural flavors of the ground sesame seeds. The side of pickles is a must. Ok, now I'm hungry for more.
