YES if you are a hummus lover than this spot is for you. This is the real deal. It's a very casual place with dynamite food. It's a unique & kind of awesome experience to get to watch your hummus being made right in front of you. We ordered the masabacha dish and the sabich. The masabacha was the best hummus I've ever had... My mouth waters thinking about it. After you've had warm perfectly blended flavorful hummus it's hard to think about eating the sorry-excuse-for-hummus they sell in the grocery store. The sabich was AWESOME. I'm not generally a fan of eggplant... However I didn't know it could be prepared like it is for the sabich. Ridiculously good. I loved the egg in the sabich as well. It's so much more than just great hummus. It's easy to tell that a lot of thought has gone into picking each of the ingredients. We had a couple of hummus bowls and falafel, everything is made with love and it's easy to tell. I actually feel their prices are too low given the attention to detail but maybe that's their strategy as a new business. Service is excellent and everyone was super friendly. I can't believe it took me so long to walk up the hill and check out Aviv. A recent meal here was one of the most memorable I've had on Capitol Hill in quite a while. Our group of four snagged the last empty table at 8 PM on a Saturday, but there was plenty of bar seating available. As usual, the smaller your group, the better your odds. Everyone in my party got either the hummus basar (with ground beef and pine nuts) or the hummus falafel. Both came with pita and a red chili-based spicy sauce on the side, but you can order additional sauces for a small fee. The food was all uniformly outstanding--the hummus was creamy and nutty and overall very well-balanced. The ground meat was great (well-spiced), but the falafel really stole the show. That has to be possibly the best falafel I've ever tasted. Portions are definitely enough to fill you up (don't forget that hummus is pure protein), and prices are very reasonable given both the quantity and quality of food you get. Went inside with high expectations but came out feeling very underwhelmed. [Ambience] The restaurant is super cute with various colors. I loved the cozy and friendly ambience here. [Food] I ordered the Falafel Pouch, Sabich (deep fried eggplant pouch), and Falafel Hummus. Falafel Pouch was extremely dry with not enough sauce. Beginning to middle part of the pouch was too heavy and dry because there was not enough sauce. It tasted very mediocre as it was just the flavor of some lettuce, a mouthful of falafel, and bits of pickled veggies. It was just veggies left in the bottom.. Sabich was better, it was definitely more saucy with various flavors. The boiled egg definitely blended those flavors together. However, I thought there were too much of pickled veggies and the major flavor was tangy. They should reduce those flavors and add more eggplants or something. Some bites were very good though. The biggest problem of these pita pouches are that the bites don't taste even. Tahini sauce did not have so much flavor also. Pita was very fluffy and good. Now to the Falafel and Hummus, the falafel was tasty. It almost tasted meaty. However, Hummus tasted bitter at the end. In my experience, this bitter taste from hummus has something to do with how they process the beans. I know what a good hummus taste like and I was very disappointed at what I got from a "hummus bar." [Price &Service] This place is pricey for what you get. This is one of my favorite Israeli restaurants in the United States. If you're looking for a nice casual Tel Aviv hummusiya vibe, this is it 100%. Before even seeing the food, entering this place is like walking into a store off Dizengoff street. From the chairs to the art on the walls, to the beer selection (featuring Goldstar lager), this place FEELS like Tel Aviv. The food makes it so much better. The hummus is good Israeli style hummus (creamier and more tahina than Arabic style), and all of their toppings are great. I especially like the hummus basar and the hatzilim (fried eggplant). Who knew hummus could be so smooth? The reviews don't lie! This is some delicious hummus. The menu is pretty small and if you don't like hummus you might not want to find another place. Unlike most middle eastern restaurants, they charge for extra pita and the prices overall are on the steep side. The hot sauce is not spicy and had a weird flavor that didn't impress me (you typically would have to pay for it but the owner was nice enough to give us some because the food took long to make its way to us). They would have 5 stars from me if the prices had been a little lower. The restaurant is small and cozy with a nice ambience. Service was good even though it took a while for our food to come. Overall I'd recommend checking Aviv out. Be sure to check whether the restaurant is open before heading there. It was closed for Yom Kippur when we originally planned on trying it. read more

Wow! Aviv Hummus bar is a favorite of mine and it's luck that I don't live closer to it because I'd be there all the time! Their food is best enjoyed in the restaurant as it's warm, fresh & doesn't taste quite the same when heated up. I've tried a good number of items on their menu as all but one item on their menu is vegetarian & I've loved everything I've tried. Their falafel is soft and fluffy and not dry and hard like many falafels from other restaurants I've tried. I love that you can watch them make falafel fresh if you sit at the bar.
