10/10 gelato spot... LA has so many good ones, but this is definitely way up there. Got the lychee seasonal flavor and it was to die for. They have a pretty small but really great selection of unique, Asian-inspired flavors. Super expensive (~$10, more if you want to split scoops or get 2 flavors), but worth once in a while/if you're splitting. Next to Dayglow, a coffee shop - super cute environment. Would absolutely come back if I'm in LA.
Well, Awan made up for my previous negative experience... (it was closed). This time, it was open! And thankfully, the helpful employee offered me some free samples, which really shaped my choice. Went with a seasonal flavor. Blue Yuzu! Tart, floral East Asian citrus swirled with blue spirulina (algae!!!). It was perfectly light, healthy, sweet, sour, delicious. Nicely sized, so you don't feel like you're over-eating. Really felt great during, and after eating it.
I got a kids scoop of Pineapple Pandan (Spring Seasonal Flavor 2026) & my fiancé got a double scoop of Vanilla & Salted Caramel. I'm vegan, my fiancé is not. He said he'd rather have this ice cream than dairy, and other vegan ice creams we've had. SCORE! This ice cream was delicious. I tried nearly every flavor! Creamy, cold, soft. Being coconut milk based, there wasn't a background coconut flavor to any ice cream I tried (which was great because sometimes coconut milk based ice creams have the coconut undertone). Perfect ice cream texture. I appreciate that they have flavors that change with the season. I love that each flavor came with a dedicated topping (mine came with a freeze dried pineapple & the salted caramel came with grated palm sugar). This Awan is operated out of a window connected to the Day Glow coffee shop (look for the blue building)! No dedicated parking lot, so street parking only. Outdoor & indoor seating available.
If you're looking for artisanal vegan ice cream that tastes good, then you're in the right place. This location is tucked away around the corner. Look for the blue Dayglow building, and you're in the right place. I came here because a friend recommended it. I had no idea it was vegan until I realized that all of the ice creams were made of coconut milk. My partner doesn't like vegan food but he enjoyed the ice cream. There were some interesting seasonal flavors, but I really wanted vanilla that day. Because the ice cream is made with coconut milk, my ice cream tasted more like coconut ice cream with a hint of vanilla, and very different from typical dairy ice cream that I realized just tastes like milk and vanilla. I'd be interested in returning to taste the other flavors to see if coconut is still the dominant flavor or not. But it's not a place that I would go out of my way for. It's more of a place that I'd drop by if I was in the neighborhood. I'm also not a big ice cream person so take that as you will.
I am not being hyperbolic when I say this, but as someone who has had a LOT of great ice cream in their life, Awan was probably the best ice cream I've ever had. Full stop. This place is a SUPER mom n pop Indonesian inspired ice cream place. You order at a little hole in the wall nook, but there is plenty of open indoor-outdoor style seating next to it. I believe everything is also vegan/coconut based! Now to the best ice cream I've had in my life: the one that ranks above them all is their collab with REM Beauty by Ariana Grande called "LOVE SPELL". It is Gula Jawa and Hibiscus flavored. The floral! The sweet! The hint of tangy! I quite literally experienced sensations that I've never tasted, kind of like Remy from Ratatouille during the synesthesia sequence. I loved it so much I went right back at bought a pint for $25. This is my petition to make this a forever flavor instead of seasonal!!! This was WAY too good of a flavor to be temporary!!! I also got the Satsuma Mandarin. WOW. The little dried slice of orange on top was the cherry on top. Lmao. Perfectly balanced sweet with tangy, and esp as someone who generally dislikes citrus flavors, this was a BANGER. Honestly...I'm still thinking about this ice cream. The flavors are so unique, so much so that I feel that it is quite literally art. I wish there was a location in the San Fernando Valley because I would be there all. the. time. I cant wait to go back!!!
SERVICE - located in West Hollywood slightly away from the busier strip of bars and restaurants - tucked into a corner behind the coffee shop in front - parking available on street or in a nearby lot - seating available in covered area or outdoor MENU - Indonesian inspired coconut based frozen desserts - all vegan/vegetarian - average price FOOD - thai tea black sesame butter crunch (/10): thai tea base with black sesame paste and cornflakes folded in. The combination of thai tea and black sesame are both bitter so when paired with the sweet coconut it made for a balanced flavored dessert. I had also tried the plain vanilla flavor but found it too sweet. WOULD I GO BACK? Possibly. I liked some of the flavors that had more bitter notes but it was not my favorite dessert.
If you're not specifically looking for this place, you will definitely miss it, lol. It's tucked away into a corner (literally) and it's just a take-out window haha. I love how interesting their flavors are, and the girl helping us was so sweet and let us try as many as we liked! We were able to try the gaviota strawberry, dayglow coffee, thai tea + black sesame butter, nekohama hojicha, and shinko pear + ginger. Their ice cream flavors really pack a punch and everything was so flavor-forward (no delicate or mild flavors here!) I ended up getting their strawberry (so basic, but so good and refreshing), and my husband got the thai tea + black sesame butter (I loved the Thai tea part, but the black sesame was too heavy and rich for me, haha). I feel like you can't go wrong with any of their flavors! There's a little area to sit and enjoy the ice cream, otherwise I'd recommend just taking it to-go. Parking here is atrocious, even for LA standards. We came on a weekday night and there was absolutely no parking. While I liked the ice cream, not sure if I'd brave the parking situation to come back, lol.
8/28/2025 First time at Awan. Had it on my must-go-to list for so long! Went on a Monday afternoon. After trying Awan on Melrose Ave, it was closed. There was a note telling me that it will open at 4:00pm instead of the usual 3:00pm, so I've decided to reroute to the one at Huntley Dr., which was a huge mistake! Traffic was crazy and parking is crazier! Finally parked in a neighborhood closeby, which had parking permit signs everywhere, took a huge risk and parked. Sampled a few before deciding. The Awan employee was very patient. NEKOHAMA HOJICHA (Kids Scoop, 3oz) Cannot tell it had coconut in it! Love the creamiess of this ice cream! Very creamy and barely any coconut flavor! The hojicha was from Nekohama and it was a good quality hojicha! SPLIT SCOOP - BALINESE VANILLA BEAN This had a lovely, rich vanilla bean flavor. It has coconut cream in it, but I could barely taste the coconut flavor. On top of the ice cream was sprinkled gula jawa (unrefined palm sugar) which was unnecessary, as I liked the flavor as it was. Love the creamy, luxurious mouthfeel! Simply delicious! PEACH + APRICOT SWIRL This was my favorite! Full of peach flavor! So good! It was a though you're biting into a fully ripened peach on a hot summer's day! Incredibly fruity, flavorful, peachy! The apricot swirl added a lovely apricot zing to it! But most of it tastes like peachy ice cream. Loved it so much, I bought a pint of it. Samples tried: Gaviota Strawberry, Dayglow Coffee, Gula Jawa Salted Caramel, Hibiscus. Out of the ones I've tried, I liked Dayglow Coffee the most. CUSTOMER SERVICE Asked for a few samples and were generously given various samples. Good customer service all around. Friendly and kind! LOCATION / SEATS / PARKING This was an odd location, as it was in a small corner next to Dayglow Coffee. There are outdoor table and seats. Parking is very difficult, as already mentioned. You can park very far away and walk or park in the neighborhood parking, which has permit parking only signs all around. I took a risk and parked somewhere that did not directly have that sign over it, yet it felt a bit risky, as majority of that neighborhood had a no parking without permit sign. Personally, I would recommend a different location. I definitely want to return to Awan, but to a different location due to parking issues.
GREAT ice cream option for people who are vegan, lactose intolerant, or just want to avoid animal fat. This tiny ice cream shop hides in the back of busy Hollywood streets. It's not easy to get to, and parking is extremely difficult in this area. For those who can conquer those difficulties, and find this small place, which does not have its own storefront, you get to enjoy some heavenly and unusual flavors! The night we went there was only one server! She struggled to help everyone who kept coming up to the window while she was trying to take a break! I've never seen an ice cream shop so small and with just one server! Maybe the business is still building! Best luck to them though!
AWAN is an ice cream shop with Indonesian inspired flavors and ice creams are all vegan and gluten-free. They currently have three locations - West Hollywood, Larchmont, and Venice. 4th location in Chinatown coming soon. This is the flagship location for AWAN. [Parking]: Street parking only. I found metered parking spots a block away (Westbourne Dr). [Atmosphere]: This is an actual hole-in-a-wall spot as the walk-up window is located right next to Dayglow coffee shop. AWAN and Dayglow share the seating area together so there's a common space to sit & enjoy ice cream. [Menu]: On the day of my visit, they ran out of all popular flavors like Chocolate Oreo and only had 6 flavors left (out of 10 flavors). The cashier said they will restock flavors in ... couple weeks. I sampled few flavors and ended up with vanilla bean. Kids scoop is 3 ounce for $6, single scoop is 5 ounce for $8, and split scoop is 6 oz for $10. *** Balinese Vanilla Bean (signature flavor made with Indonesian coconut water & coconut cream finished with shavings of gula jawa - an unrefined palm sugar; kids scoop 3 ounce for $6): I could taste a subtle flavor profile, but personally it tasted too dense and overly sweet. I did like gula jawa, but ice cream itself was way too sweet and I actually didn't finish the entire scoop. *** Super friendly cashier, but I prefer other Asian inspired ice cream shops like Wanderlust Creamery (multiple locations in LA) and Kansha Creamery in Gardena.
Wow! this is some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted! They have some very unique flavors. At the time when I came, I got a lavender flavored ice cream. I love that you can check out the latest flavors on their website or Instagram. The staff was very friendly and also patient while my friends and I decided on a flavor. I can't wait to come back and try a new flavor :)

The ice cream was alright but definitely overhyped. It wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to the buzz. For the price and all the hype, I expected something more memorable. Nice a little place in Weho, and great customer service. read more
Perfect for those who are lactose intolerant! My friend brought me here because he claimed that this was the best coconut-based ice cream because it didn't taste like a typical dairy free coconut based ice creams. I didn't believe him until I tried the various samples (don't be afraid to taste a few samples even if there is a line, which there always seems to be at night!). I was blown away by the rich creamy flavor and nearly non-existent coconut taste. My chocolate Oreo ice cream tasted like creamy, rich chocolate with generous Oreo chunks! A little goes a long way because of how rich and filling the ice cream is. There is also a bit of seating outside but it can be hard to find a place to sit when it's crowded. We came on a Wednesday night to a line of maybe 8 people and managed to find seats. read more
I wanted some dessert after lunch and found AWAN on Yelp. The location is super hidden, so I can confidently say that I would've walked past it if it wasn't for Yelp. The man serving us was incredibly nice. He let us sample almost all the flavors and was super passionate about vegan ice cream and the ingredients used. Cara cara orange and blueberry pie (4/5): Great presentation with a small slice of orange and blueberry crumble respectively. Both were tangy and tart had incredible flavor and texture. I had a great time sampling the different flavors, but my honest opinion is that it was pricey and extremely sweet and I did get kinda thirsty towards the end. read more

Scooped some of the Gaviota Strawberry and was not disappointed. It tasted like some of the most rich and fresh strawberries that I have ever tried. They mentioned these were from Harry's Berrys, a small independent organic family farm out of Oxnard. Instant thumbs up. A little on the pricey side, but the flavor makes it worth it. read more

AWAN's icecream left me speechless! I ordered the green glow matcha and valencia orange flavors. The novelty and intensity did not diminish with each sequential bite. Instead, it made me crave the next bite even more . And the best thing about it is that everything is lactose-free!! Besides cups, they also sell flavors by the pint. If you are unfamiliar with a flavor, employees offer samples. I was told the flavors rotate every few days or every week. Seating: There is 1 bench outside the store and a table nearby. No indoor seating available. Parking: Street parking only. Neighborhood parking requires permits. Tip: AWAN is a bit hidden, so look for "DayGlow" which is the coffee shop next door. read more
NOTE: Visited on 3/12/22. Miraculously found parking right away (it's WeHo, after all). It's around the corner and down the little stairs. Located next to Dayglow. I love establishments that serve food out of windows - previous iterations of Bang Bang Noodles, the Win~Dow at Venice, Holy Basil... there's just something about strolling up the window and ordering some of the best food in the city. Add Awan to the list, as it's the most exciting ice cream shop to open in LA in quite some time. Awan means "cloud" in Indonesian and that accurately describes the feeling and texture of the ice cream. The biggest challenge with most vegan ice creams is figuring out how to have a thick consistency due to the common usage of coconut water and/or coconut cream as a substitute for milk. Out of all of the vegan ice cream places I've had, only Awan and Hug Life have been able to circumvent that difficulty and I would say that Awan does it in an honestly impressive manner. It's creamy, manages to avoid being icy, it's aesthetically pleasing, and yet still has its own unique mouthfeel as you're eating it. I can't explain it exactly, but it dissolves on your tongue like fresh powdered snow hitting a warm surface. We were allowed to take as many samples as we wanted to (we were also the only customers at the time, so definitely no pressure nor any rush) and although each one was delicious in their own right, we settled for the blood orange and sapote. Now while the blood orange was great, the sapote single-handedly took this from a 4-star establishment to a 5-star one. What is sapote, you ask? It's a fruit that has multiple variations - most commonly black and white. It's native to Mexico and Central America and the texture is relatively smooth and the taste... the taste is wonderfully unique. It's like a rich and creamy mix of banana and something citrus-y like pineapple. Since the ice cream at Awan has a coconut base, the blending of the flavors is PERFECT and if this happens to be there when you visit, do yourself a favor and sample it. It's simply some of the best ice cream you can get in LA. Finally, as a warning: certain flavors do rotate (like the sapote) so check their website or IG or call in to find out what they currently offer. read more

This place is so worth the hype! I personally have love for fresh coconuts and I could taste the freshness of it. Impressive how creamy it is and for the price, its well worth it. I got the coffee and birthday cake flavor both were good. They allowed you to sample and there's some seating. Street parking was easy on a saturday. The place was kinda hidden, but its beside a coffee shop and you have to go down a few steps. I'd come back here again. read more

I love AWAN ice cream. The flavors are all unique, tasty, and refreshing. My favorites were the chocolate, orange creamsicle, and the strawberry made from Harry's berries. The texture is not as creamy as at traditional cows milk ice cream, but I enjoyed how the ice cream coated my tongue. If no one told me that it was vegan, I wouldn't have guessed it. The only con is that the ice cream starts to melt pretty quickly. There is a bit of an aftertaste that you might not be used to probably due to the coconut milk, but I didn't mind this. Zen, the mastermind chef behind AWAN, keeps it fresh with the seasonal flavors (made from fresh, seasonal, high quality fruits directly sourced from farmers), which keeps all the loyal customers coming back! He also does collaborations with other chefs! For example, I enjoyed the milk tea flavor he created with Mei Lin. AWAN is hidden in a little corner next to Dayglow coffee. There is no parking lot, but I was able to find street parking. read more

I ordered four pints with shipping to Hawaii and my Awan arrived perfect like I'd just picked it up at the shop window! Communication about shipping and tracking was also great. I was able to grab it as soon as it arrived so it didn't sit out in the heat. I'm so excited I can get my Gaviota fix even though I've moved away and will definitely order again! read more

I'm not a fan of vegan ice cream because of the overpowering coconut taste. However the chocolate vegan ice cream at AWAN was delicious and didn't have a strong coconut taste at all. This is definitely one of the best vegan ice creams I've had. The store is a bit hidden, you'll have to walk down a few steps and the in the corner of the wall is a little window where you can order the ice cream. read more
I tried the granny smith & yuzu and the mandarin & strawberry ! This is definitely one of the best vegan ice cream places I've ever been to! They had so many unique flavors (also really loved the variety of Asian fruits) and the flavor of each was immaculate! And the texture was very well done as well, very creamy-- even the fruity flavors! It is on the pricier side but I would highly recommend trying this place! read more

Really glad my girlfriend pushed me towards trying the vegan ice cream, because AWAN was phenomenal. It's a pop-out window located right behind the Dayglow Coffee area with a small stairway entry. Service was very friendly. Their signature flavor is the Balinese vanilla, but we personally liked the fruity flavors (blueberry and strawberry) and the saffron pistachio medjool date and marzipan. We both ordered two flavors (1 fruity and 1 savory base) which worked wonders! And the great thing about vegan ice cream was that I wasn't tired or suffering from food coma afterwards. Only street parking is available, and it is limited because most of the residential area required permits. read more
Awan is tucked away in the corner of Dayglow Coffee. It's hard to find so just follow the signs towards Dayglow Coffee and you'll find it. Apparently their flavors are on a rotational basis so some flavors you see online might not be available in stores (at least for the scoops). They do let you sample the flavors before you buy which is pretty nice. I sampled the vanilla bean and orange flavors and the vanilla tasted a bit like coconut and the orange tasted tart and sweet. I decided to order the strawberry and Oreo chocolate both which were pretty good. Strawberry was a bit sour but paired with the sweetness from the Oreo, it was a good balance between sweet and sour. read more

If you are lactose intolerant (like me) or vegan or just looking for something sweet, I think this would be the perfect place to try! I got the Balinese Vanilla and Muscate Grape split scoop for around $8 (2022/08/20). The vanilla scoop has shaved Gulajawa (palm sugar) on top, which added a slight texture. Personally, I love ice creams with toppings in them, so I really liked that they added the palm sugar on top. It really elevated the unassuming vanilla ice cream. The muscat grape scoop was also good, and tasted sour but creamy. I really liked how the ice cream scoops were creamy despite being vegan, and definitely recommend others to try it out! I found out about this place through TikTok and decided to check it out. Most of their flavors change every week or so, I believe, but if you go on their Instagram, you can see the current flavors of the week. However, it is not entirely accurate. I wanted a certain flavor while I was there that was on their currents on Instagram, but it was unavailable, probably due to higher demand. The only cons are there is very little seating, the price cane be steep, and the location can be tricky. read more
Such an amazing ice cream here. They have Indonesian influences with the ingredients and flavors. It is vegan but they use coconut cream so the ice cream still comes out very creamy. It's kind of hidden around the corner and just a walk up stand but it's a nice little set up. I really love the toppings and you can tell they are very well thought out and homemade, not like the store bought ones most places have. read more

Ice Cream: 4.5/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4.5/5 We were craving some cold dessert after eating a ton of pasta and pizza and found this lil hidden gem. It was kinda hard to find the spot but it is tucked away in a tiny window down a few stair steps. We ordered the Strawberry and Passionfruit flavors in the split scoop cup. The Strawberry scoop was really tasty and had a nice gelato-like texture. It was not too sweet but the strawberry flavor was really prominent! :) if you're a fan of strawberry flavors I highly recommend it because this one had more of a natural tasting flavor rather than some artificial strawberry type ice creams. The second flavor we got was the passionfruit! Honestly, this one was not our favorite because it was super tart and had a lot of seeds. If you are a fan of tart and sour sweet palette, I think this one would be perfect for you! The passionfruit flavor was really nice, but we definitely preferred the strawberry over the tartness of the passionfruit. The ice cream comes out looking extremely pretty and they definitely take their time with making it presentable too! I'd also like to note that the texture of the fruit flavors are more gelato-like than the traditional milky ice cream too! I would definitely like to come back and try more flavors in the future. read more

Came across di place on yelp and the reviews brought us to this place! So many good reviews, so it gave me a high expectation. This is definitely a to go kind of dessert, there's no place to really sit and you order from a window. I believe their ice cream is made fresh daily. The workers are so nice and was so patient with us (especially giving us many samples to try) as a matcha lover, I ended up ordering the dayglow matcha and my sister ordered the chocolate. I rarely give 5 stars rating on yelp and when I do is because everything about that place is good! Since this is simply just an ice cream place, not being able to dine in is not a big problem for me. The service was awesome and the flavor and taste of the ice cream was epic! This flavor is unique and a must try! Highly recommend and can't wait to go back to CA and come back to this place! Hoping they will open in other states as well! read more
I rave about this place so much my church calls me Awan ambassador LOL When I first came, I didn't know they were vegan and I also am not a fan of coconut so I was hesitant but when I say trust me, TRUST ME! The texture is so creamy and smooth but so light unlike other ice cream places in LA. My favorite flavors were the coffee and blood orange. The best Ice cream ever! The Pistachio ice cream is a classic favorite, but the addition of saffron, dates, and rose takes this treat to an entirely new level. The rich, creamy pistachio base provides a perfect backdrop for the symphony of exotic flavors. The service is good they offer you to taste different flavors if need be. The ambiance is very cool. Have already been there twice in a week and can't wait to go again. read more

My friends and I went after dinner to try this non-dairy ice cream spot and it literally a hidden alleyway with just an order window. I even almost walked into their kitchen by accident! By some luck, we were the only ones there but usually there's a super long line so we got to try basically all the flavors. They are coconut based and for the most part you don't taste it unless it's a most basic subtle flavor like vanilla. It's super creamy and they give generous portions, plus you can get a split scoop! They change their flavors all the time and they are so unique that I now want to go often just to see what they'll offer. If you want something fun and different for dessert come check this place out! read more

SO delicious! You definitely don't need to be vegan or lactose free to enjoy the ice cream here and I personally thought it was well worth the hype. I got the Balinese vanilla bean and it was one of the most delicious ice creams I've ever had. I also got the Bonnie & Cavallion melon which was also really good, especially if you like melon but for me the vanilla bean really stole the show. The service was great and there is some seating which I'm not sure if it's shared with the Dayglow right next to it or if it's only for Dayglow customers. It is also street parking only. read more

Cute establishment located right next to Dayglow Coffee that can be hard to miss from the main street. The employees are patient while you decide what to order and they do give samples and recommendations. I ended up with Balinese Vanilla and Blood Orange, both of which were 5/5 and incredibly creamy. I now understand the hype! After sampling the Blood Orange flavor which was too much like creamsicle to me I decided on getting the blueberry flavor. Not only was this ice cream super creamy it was also refreshing. Each bite of felt like i was popping a fresh blueberry in my mouth!
