My husband took our 2005 Subaru Outback here after we purchased it used to get it checked out and get a list of what all needed to be done on it. The car wasn't super well-loved, if you know what I mean, so we knew it would need some work. He was at AWD for several hours (he made an appointment) during which time they were not even looking at the car. When they finally did pull it in to take a look, they came back with an eye-watering estimate that included a full transmission rebuild! We were shocked to hear this, as the transmission was one of the items we were not concerned about. The car has a manual transmission with a short-throw sport shifter, and we had no issues with it at all. They did list off a few other things, including some oil leaks we were pretty sure were there, but the transmission quote really threw us for a loop. We took the car to another shop, Hackler Transmissions, to get a second opinion. We've taken a prior car with a manual transmission to them, and trust them. Hackler popped in the car, took it for quick spin, took a quick look under the hood, and told us it didn't need a thing done to the transmission. Everything worked fine, no issues. Also, no charge from Hackler for taking a look. We took the car to another shop to start having the engine work done and it did need a reseal, which AWD mentioned, so they were right about that, which is why they get 2 stars instead of one. Bottom line, though, is they were shady and dishonest about the transmission, and wanted to charge close to $3,000 for a rebuild it didn't need. Needless to say, we will never come back and will not recommend AWD to anyone else. Oh, and the shop we now go to has a Subaru enthusiast as one of the advisors, and he mentioned he did not trust AWD with his Subaru, either. There are too many dishonest auto shops in the world, it's a shame that AWD is choosing to be one of them. read more

I heard about these guys from co workers and seeing other cars they have done. They gave me the best quote by far and gave me no b.s answers to my issues. I got major gains in my stage 2 and the shifter is a dream, sway bars were the cherry on top. The owner spent forever tuning my car to get every notch of power and smoothness imaginable. Took my 2012 WRX to AWD tuning for professional tune while there discovered a fuel pump was needed had AWD tuning to do the install they was reasonably priced on tune, install and parts. They have a nice guest waiting area and was very knowledgeable about my Subaru WRX. My only complaint would be they put my used fuel pump in my cars front floorboards and it leaked some fuel I had to remove my floor mats a couple days to air out I would definitely recommend this shop based on my experience. These guys went out of their way to save my trip. I was travelling across country in my Porsche coupe replica with Subaru turbo engine and had some electrical issues that wouldn't let me start the car. As far as a shop was concerned, I was a big headache. I had a one-off car, electrical problems, with no wiring diagram, and the fault was intermittent. All downside for a shop, eh? Well let me think of what I can write about this business. There are basically one of 2 "go-to" places in DFW for Subaru and Evo performance and maintenance. I wont mention the competitor, but I will say that AWD is the choice for performance enthusiasts in the metroplex. Keith the owner is a expert for tunes, and sends them all around the world to owners. I like that the customer waiting area includes an xbox, leather couches and is fully carpeted. Its kind of like staying at your own house! AWD hosts 2 dyno days a year that you can get a HP number on your car for $40. Thats a good deal for 3 pulls, plus they throw in lunch for free. I have only had to use them a few times, but I would say that Keith and Mary are honest, ethical and professional for what they do. The location is a little difficult to find, and parking is a pain, but it's worth it. Check these guys out for sure. read more

Keith is the man, that should be stated first. I have basically a stock Subaru, they treat me like I am spending 10's of thousands of dollars when in reality, I am spending a few bucks for repairs. I don't think their prices are rough, this is my second visit there. They're patient and I think my money is being well spent on service. If you have a fancy Subaru, or just a "normal" one like me, do your self a favor and take your car here! They don't appear to take days off, this also helps us 9-5 guys/gals make it in on the weekends. read more

I'd previously posted my experience with AWDTuning on the iwsti.com forums, but those posts seem to have disappeared completely. I'm wondering if they didn't ask for an admin to take them down. I'm writing this review to share the single worst experience that I've ever had with a tuning shop. This was in 2010, but the staff seem to be the same and it bears repeating since there's another more recent review with a similar experience. Like many deployed soldiers, I spent my deployment saving my money and doing research for a complete car build. I chose the best parts and based on my research I thought that I'd chosen the best tuner based on the high praise in reviews of AWDTuning. I was on the fence between them and another tuner in the area but they were cheaper so I chose them. I learned a harsh lesson about getting what you pay for. I was doing a full service and suspension build with coilovers, brakes, wheels, tires, etc. I had a 2004 Subaru STi and I also wanted to get the hubs swapped from 5x100 to 5x114 to get a better wheel selection. This required switching out a sundial gear and changing out the axles because of the splines. I asked the owner during our emails if they knew how to do this and I was assured that they knew what they were doing. I'll give Keith the benefit of the doubt and assume that he really did know how do to it. However, when you take your car to AWDTuning, you may not have Keith or an experienced Subaru mechanic working on your car. I had all of my parts shipped to them right before I returned from deployment and they had advance notice for when I was bringing my car in, so they should have made sure someone experienced was available for my car. When I brought my car in, their shop was absolutely packed with Subarus and Mitsubishis and they were filling the lots outside. At the time I thought it was really cool that they had a couple of rally cars that they were prepping for Pikes Peak, but those cars would turn out to be my downfall. After my car was completed, my excitement for the build died within the first week as I was left stranded by the work done by AWDTuning. My radiator hose had a hole rubbed in it because whoever installed it left it rubbing against the fan-belt pulleys. Luckily I had a friend that drove me on a 2 hour round-trip to Austin, which was the only place that had a hose for my car in stock on such short notice. Once the hose was replaced, I took my car to another mechanic friend's house (known on the iwsti forums as scby_rex) and that's where things got really interesting. Upon closer inspection, there were countless issues with the work that was done on the car. There were bolts across the engine that were loose and pieces like the reservoirs weren't even attached. They were just hanging free. The coilovers were also installed incorrectly. There was even a trailing arm bolt that was finger tight! If that bolt had come off, I could've been in a serious accident! If that wasn't enough, my differentials began fighting themselves at low speeds because they installed the hub swap incorrectly. Keith offered to fix the car if I brought it up them again, so I did. I made the round-trip from Fort Hood to Plano, TX to give them one more chance and I was having the same differential problems within a week of them working on it. I had to take my car to another shop just to undo the work done by AWDTuning. There are still plenty of reviews praising Keith and AWDTuning and I'm not saying that they didn't have a great experience with him. Potential customers should know that at the time that I had my work done, they were partnered with a Mitsubishi shop. I can't prove it, but I suspect that an employee from the Mitsubishi shop worked on my car instead of a Subaru mechanic because they were massively overloaded and trying to push those two rally cars previously mentioned out the door in time for Pikes Peak. Regardless of who worked on my car, the negligence that they exhibited in their work was beyond unacceptable and outright dangerous. I paid them over $2000 for the supposed quality of their work and what I got for it was far worse than if I'd just done it myself. If you choose AWDTuning, you're rolling the dice on your car. You might get Keith and have an exceptional experience. Then again, you might have a Mitsubishi mechanic, the secretary, or whoever happens to be standing around at the time working on your car. If that's the case, be prepared to receive a car that was thrown together as quickly as possible with absolutely no professionalism or consideration. They won't verify their work and they'll let you drive a dangerous car away like they did in my case. Since you don't know what you're getting with AWDTuning, I would recommend anyone planning a tune to stay far away from this business. read more

Keith, Mary, and Frankie were the most hospitable, professional, and friendly group of folks I have ever had the pleasure doing business with. Answered all of my silly questions, gave me an awesome tour of their engine building facility, and really made me feel at home. I had a challenging tuning project for Keith, and they took excellent care of me and my STI. They did not try to up-sell me on anything that wasn't truly needed, and tailored a plan that suited my needs and my budget. Even after hours at 10pm, when my car had a fluke issue, they were talking to me and helping me through it. Had a motor built, received it with loose bolts, double their time estimate and double their estimated cost. Had 2 misdiagnoses before they found the issue (told me "no issue" and "spun rod" before telling me 2 days later they had blocks/owners confused and mine was a loose bore. did not break down entire block prior to quoting me upgrades, resulting in mandatory parts. Charged for the same part twice. Had to call from a different number to get an answer twice. Poor record keeping, a tech (not Frankie) that did not check his work, and poor customer service, even after admitting they messed up. read more

I have been a long time AWDTuning customer and since day one 4 years ago they have been my second family. Keith did work on my first Subaru and it ran great. Now I actually own his wrx that started the whole gig! The work AWDTuning does is phenomenal. Every bit of performance work on my car has been done by them, and the motor has seen now 3 turbos and has never seen lower than 280awhp, then 351, and now 335. Its daily driven, daily beaten on, has 31,000 miles and runs as great as the day I got it. Ive NEVER had any issue with anything the team there has done. They are the only place I will let touch my car, and would recommend them to anyone looking to enhance their daily ride, or just keep it up to shape! read more

Where to start? What a horrible experience at AWDTuning. I took my built 2004 sti there for a tune. The shop was overwhelmed and didn't get to attempt to start my tune until sundown. AWDTuning then informed me they heard "piston slap" and weren't comfortable tuning the car. So what do I do? Ask them to build a completely new motor and tune it. Months later they finally finish the build (without a road tune because Keith's back hurt.) Car would barely run with A/C on. It was like it was never driven off of the dyno. Zero driveability. Whatever, I take it home because they have had my car for months. Motor lasts not even a couple thousand miles and blows a head gasket. I know I don't trust the build or tune so we start over. Come to find out the whole motor was built with the incorrect size main bearings. The install was half-baked at best. Loose clamps and bolts everywhere. They plumbed my air oil separator completely wrong which was pressurizing my crank case with full boost. Heck, they even wrapped wires they were trying to shield from heat with highly conductive metal conduit. My friend who put me on AWDTuning also got a tune. They tuned his car with the fuel pressure regulator unplugged! They admitted they saw the line and just capped it! Horrible experience. Nothing worse than a tuning shop that has no mechanical knowledge. read more

My story with AWD Tuning goes like this. I brought a old stock Subaru forrester in for a head gasket replacement. This was a $2300 job. I had only owned this car for a short time and it had really high miles on it. Keith informed me that the engine in it was not the original engine. So I really don't know how many miles ,or what condition, the engine was in. None the less they did the job and sent me on my way. Eleven months later ,the timing belt broke ,and left my son stranded on the highway. Being a Sunday ,I had the car towed in to my usual shop ,and they diagnosed the problem ,and said the head needed to be pulled again. I had the car towed back to AWD to have them look at it. Keith checked it out, and said the timing belt was installed improperly by a technician that was no longer working for them. Even though the shop only has a 3 month warranty, and I was 8 months past that, they went ahead and fixed the car, and made it right. This saved me over 2 grand for having to repeat the same work over again. Its not often that you find a shop willing to stand by their reputation and do what is right even if its not under warranty. Its to easy to find a out ,and create a reason not to do a job. Keith and the shop had the integrity to own the problem and to do the right think and fix it. I had my 2016 wrx 2.0 dropped off here after my motor blew. It was a hassle of a build with my motor being built from IAG and that it blew up for some odd reason, and the other shop involved was in NH. It was just a headache, but these guys handled it with professionalism and ease. Kirby dealt with all the emails that I sent them for updates and kept his composure the whole time. Mary took care of staying on IAG to make sure parts arrived on time. Keith was the master mind behind the beautiful stage 2 tune on my car now. This bunch is extremely knowledgeable and will not steer you wrong. From getting my motor shipped to giving me the blue prints for a solid stage 2 build, and steering me away from some lack luster parts, these people can do it all. There's no place else I will be taking my car. I don't care where I'm at I will make the drive to flower mound just for the level professionalism here. They even let my son play with some die cast cars while I paid for everything. Definitely going above and beyond. I could not be happier with my experience here and I will be advertising for them with some AWD Tuning decals and telling everyone that asks about my killer experience here. My experience here was terrible. I took my first owned suburau wrx sti here for a repair. I bought it from a guy who upgraded everything at Cobb. I decided to take it to awd since they were more affordable. I was going down I-20 and all of the sudden I heard a terrible noise then a big white cloud of smoke covered all lanes of traffic. I was worried pulled over and noticed oil in the coolant. Awd wasn't very responsive and took their time. I finally got a call back and they told me to come in for a sit down so we can go over my options. They told me that I blew a piston and a rod. They recommended that I upgrade to forged pistons and rods. The lady asked me if I would like to see photos of the inside showing I blew a piston. I told her no and I trust you guys. I couldn't afford to fix it so I sold it taking on a 9k loss. The guy who bought it from me on Craigslist was a machinist. He wanted to turn it into a rally car since I already had most of the parts upgraded. He called me a week after I sold it to tell me it wasn't a blown piston in fact it was just a blown turbo. We are sooo Fast and Furious after taking our WRX to AWDTuning!! Fast to sell the car after they repaired it and furious because we had no choice but to sell it. This is by far the worst business venture we have ever pursued. We paid $9,000 for a mediocre engine build. We dropped the car off in the summer, and didn't get it back until the winter. When we got the car back it had missing/loose screws, heat shields and brackets; an empty coolant reservoir and our car battery, which they said needed replaced, was just thrown in the compartment. They misdiagnosed a wiring issue and in the long run the wiring issue 'magically' disappeared (which ended up supposedly being the battery instead). The price also had gone up 18% and without notice for necessary repairs. Mary (one of the principal owners) said she was handles the authorization calls to customers and she failed to call us to authorize the repairs because she was dealing with personal family matters. Our motor heads were sitting in a queue AT ANOTHER SHOP (even though they tell you they have a machine shop in house) for two weeks so there was no intention for them to call us. They are apologetic over the phone and admit fault, but all is forgotten in person. They are not very personable and VERY unorganized. Their files are just in stacks on the floors/desks and it took them 20 minutes to locate our paperwork we asked for a copy of. Our build was mistaken for another customer's and they never had their stories straight. We thought it was all over but after about 3 months, the car started leaking oil. We still had warranty so brought it back up there and apparently it was the power steering system that was leaking which they said they do not even touch during an engine overhaul. The power steering reservoir was always full, but the motor had to be either bleeding or burning oil. We had to put motor oil in every 3 weeks to keep it filled. At least while it was there, we had them put the shields and brackets back on and they threw in a battery tie free of charge. I had other shops tell us that the motor was leaking oil, but AWD stated otherwise. The short block they built did look solid with no leaks, but the work on the refreshed heads is questionable. According to Mary, they have gone through 3 to 4 different shops for head work and it makes us wonder why? As stated above, they advertise an in-house machine shop, but if head work is needed, it cannot be done there. They are quick to reach in your pockets to get more money, but they take no ownership in there workmanship, nor do they care about their AWDTuning brand. I am sure they are capable of building a 10 second car, but it will probably take them half a year to build it with plenty of misdiagnoses along the way. We cut our losses and sold the car in fear it would fail. The limited liability form they ask you to sign protects them from any wrong doing whether they are at fault or not so if you do business with them, I highly recommend you have them WRITE OUT the terms you decide on or take your business elsewhere. They over-promise and under-deliver. You have been warned. read more
