Not sure why all the high reviews, but we have been here twice and have found it to be OK, but will probably not return again because there are better options in the surrounding area. We have been for the awesome hour and the items were cheap, but did not really think the quality was there. Same when we went for lunch, the prices are decent but the quality was not there. The last time the rice was very undercooked, almost crispy and one of the rolls had way too much mayo in it. With the other options in the area, this Sushi restaurant falls to the bottom. read more

Went there for dinner last night. Love the Awesome roll. If u are fan of butter, you have to try it. Save room for dessert, too. Banana creme brulee had perfect caramelize sugar on top of layer of sliced banana and creamy custard. Definitely will go back again. read more

This is a favorite! We went for the first time for my boyfriends birthday in January 2013 and LOVED it. Never judge a book by it's cover. This place doesn't look too exciting on the outside but it's AWESOME on the inside (pun intended, lol). Food is delicious, service is even better and we haven't had to wait more than 5 minutes for a seat. I am super glad this was my first sushi/sashimi experience!! Thank you Awesome Sushi!! This place is the best. They are super friendly and the Sushi Rocks! They even named a new sushi cut roll that they will ad to their menu after a suggestion I made. It's called the C-17(Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Cucumber, and Shrimp Tempura on top with a spicy sauce) Ask for it.. it's the bomb. It should satisfy those that hear that honkin C-17 Military Cargo Jet that flys over the area! I think they need to make it bigger to resemble the Jets engines! The chef and staff are super kind and know what they are doing. Try the ono bowl for lunch and the salad. It's sooooo yummy. I'll be going there almost daily for lunch. read more

Awesome sushi, awesome prices, awesome staff. Thanks to yelp for leading us here. I would NEVER have just dropped in on this place stuck under the flight path of Long Beach Airport, and next to an auto repair shop if I hadn't been so advised. In summary, we ate 12 pieces of sushi, had 4 rolls and I had a beer for about 37 bucks pre-tip. If that's not a deal, I don't know what is. Not only that, but the sushi does not suck. In fact, it's actually really really good. As a side bonus you can reenact the airplane scene in Wayne's World if you get a table next to the window. My god, the restaurant is about 10 yards from the end of the runway and you know it when a place comes in to land...let's just say, I'm not eating here in fog, rain, or any other type of bad weather, yikes. That said, the hostess was really nice and helpful. My wife is not a fan of sauce on her sushi so they put all the sauces on the side. We had Tuna, Yellowtail and Salmon all of which were really tasty. For rolls we had a Green Monster (the sauce is kinda weird, very tangy), Crunch Roll, Bora Bora Roll and the Awesome roll (another weird sauce, but good in its own way). 5 easy awesome stars. My fiancé and I love it here! He's vegetarian and I have been unlucky enough to have grown up not enjoying the taste of seafood. But that's no problem, we both LOVE vegetarian sushi. Awesome Sushi is great because the have a large specialty vegetarian sushi list that are SUPER yummy. On top of everything, Nina and her crew are super AWESOME. Had an amazing time here last night. The food was great - super fresh. Everything was tasty as hell. What made it great was the ambiance and the people. They played great music and everyone was super friendly and jovial. The manager, Nena, is the best!! I have been eating at Awesome Sushi almost since they opened. I started eating Sushi in 1978, back when there was less than 10 places in all of southern California. I know good sushi. The food is always great, especially some of their custom creations. It is small, but the intamacy is nice. I always feel like I am walking into a family members house, as they treat me and their customers with kindness, love, & respect. I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff there. Yes, they get busy, but I know they do their best. They usually have Bluefin Tuna (YEAH!), and often have special fish like Goldeneye Snapper, Flying Fish, Fresh Sea Urchin, etc... Executive Chef Pat even got me fish by request (Jerry, be here friday, I promise I will have it)! When I was under the weather, they always took extra care with me. Saw the good reviews on this place, so my BF and I decided to try it out the other day for a spontaneous mini celebration for some good news we received. We have been skeptical of this place since it is next to the smog shop but decided to give it a whirl anyway. The spot is a lot small than I thought it would be but did notice half way through the meal that there was also outside seating available. We didn't even realize it was happy hour but were excited when we were told about it when we were sat. We ordered the Awesome Roll, Fire Ant Roll and the Yellow Monster. We were not really impressed with any of them. I liked the Yellow Monster the most and that is bad since it is the veggie roll. The Awesome Roll was just way too mushy and soft textured and both rolls were just smothered in the sauces. Besides that the rolls were all falling apart. Finally, we were finishing the meal and the waitress asked how we were doing. We said we were all set and ready for the bill. She then came over and asked if we ever been there before and we told her no. She said to get the happy hour prices, we would have to eat all of the food to leave!!! I couldn't even believe it and then she pointed it out to us, which is written in tiny print at the bottom of the paper. We were fully, plus not really satisfied with the taste of the sushi anyway, so we were definitely not finishing almost another full roll to leave. That is where the 3 stars really come in. The 3 stars is mainly for the waitress for giving us the happy hour prices, since we were not aware of it before we ordered. My bf and I go here on Mondays. We're usually there for happy hour (330-6). I absolutely love how fresh their salmon sushi are. Very soft, tender, and sweet. The actual rolls itself are weaksauce. Actually, they add too much sauce to every freakin roll so all you can really taste are the mayos, butter, etc on it. Meh, stick to the sushi pieces. It's well worth it. read more

After reading all the positive reviews we had to try this place. Sorry to say it was a disappointment BIG time. The place looks more like a cantina than a sushi bar. Service is good and quite fast and friendly. The food however is another matter....all the plates that came out looked fantastic however they didn't taste like sushi because of all the butter sauce. Sushi rice should not be falling apart and tasting like rice pilaf. The Awesome Roll was anything but awesome. The sushi was paper thin and with all the butter didn't taste anything like sushi... Basically any of the rolls that had butter were the same way. After our third roll we decided we needed to leave because the inside of our mouths were covered in fat and we couldn't tease anything further. read more

Loooove Awesome sushi! The people there are amazing, especially the owner Nena. She treats everyone like family! The food is also delicious. They have a great selection of specialty rolls (love the Awesome roll), but they're plain sushi is also delicious for the purists out there, with good sized cuts and a nice clean taste. Unlike most other sushi places, their hot food is really delicious too. So if you have a friend who isn't into sushi, they can get a teriyaki chicken bowl and still have a great meal. Though I was told over the phone that they don't typically allow orders of awesome roll for take out, they advised me to make sure I heat up the butter ponzu sauce.
