After seeing great reviews of this place, i decided to try it for the first time. However, i was not impressed. Bear in mind that im the type of person that enjoys eating only raw fish at sushi restaurants and i rarely opt for fully cooked rolls. I felt that most of the rolls contained mainly crab meat, but they were all a bit more expensive to my liking. The seasoning is so light combined with the butter and tangy ponzu sauce is a unique blend of flavors that go sooo well together I. First time here, walking in not that impressed but got seated at the bar right away. The first server was a support guy, nice but English not his first language so I had to make my drink order a couple times. Our actual server arrived, Asian lady, very nice and a lady on the move, no wasted action, always picking up and dropping off items. Really excellent service for the rest of dinner. Even the young support guy picked up on her vibe and picked up his game. We go out a lot and good service is critical, especially at 25%+. The sushi was REALLY good! Not an awesome experience. Extremely slow service. I ordered online at 7:05pm. I was told the order would be ready at 7:30pm. I traveled to the restaurant and en route I received a text that the order would be delayed until 7:40pm. Upon arrival at 7:20pm I went to the togo order window and rang the bell, no response. At approximately 7:35, someone opened the window and asked me if I wanted to place an order. They were clearly unaware of my online order as they needed to go find the ticket that had been ignored. Awesome Sushi! What an experience to say the least. I came on a rainy night and it was bumping inside. Bumping to the point I saw the employees taking shots of alcohol with some of the guests. I don't know how professional that is... I raised my own concerns about food safety handling raw fish when under the influence. They were drinking quite a bit while I dined there. I ordered 4 rolls: Caterpillar roll Awesome roll Crunch roll I feel so lucky roll One order of egg rolls Milk tea Mango lemonade I did not try the caterpillars or crunch roll to comment on them. Neither the egg rolls. But the egg rolls say 4 pieces... they cut two regular egg rolls in half and called it 4 pieces. I had the I feel so lucky roll and I thought it was pretty good. It tasted like a saucier crunch roll. Of course the spicy mayo and eel sauce combo is a fave so it turned out really well. The awesome roll... is definitely for those that like sashimi. It's fish in and out so very very fishy. Nothing wrong with that. It just was not my forte. I had to def add ginger and wasabi to swallow it done. There was not really much flavor overall, just the texture and flavor of fish. I didn't finish the awesome roll and they took it off the bill. I thought that was really nice of them to do. The milk tea & mango lemonade were way too sweet for my liking. I thought there was definitely way too much sugar in it. Dial the sweetness back and I think they both would be really good. Always great to visit this local sushi spot. This restaurant is in my local sushi rotation if I'm ever having cravings. Services is always great, staff is always friendly, sushi fresh and yummy. It is on the small side inside as it shares the same space as a repair shop next door. Music is just about right to be able to hear your own conversation. She is so funny, kind, and just such a sweet lady that made her customers have a great time. The service here is very attentive and friendly and fast. The Brilliant roll, salmon on a spicy crab roll, is a perfect combination of flavors. Their California roll is excellent. Their nigiri is very good. All the rolls and sushi pieces are fresh and flavorful and the rice for the rolls perfectly textured and prepared. The hamachi kama is subtly seasoned and perfectly tender and flavorful. This tiny corner restaurant, close enough to the airport and far away enough from the noise and frantic traffic is an ideal respite. The lunch specials are excellently priced. Ordered one of their specials which included...teriyaki chicken, rice, salad, gyoza, spicy tuna roll and miso soup. Tuna was fishy (could not finish), gyoza was ok and chicken was a bit tough (could not finish). Miso soup was delicious! $1.00 for spicy Mayo (flavor a bit bland). Was it a glitch? A long time sushi staple in Long Beach (since 2009), Awesome Sushi has a large menu, centered around their fresh fish, but also having selections for the non-sushi eaters in your party. There are quite a few lunch specials listed on their current and well designed website (check out the 'about us' tab), which is why we stopped in for lunch on a Monday afternoon, soon after their opening at 11 am. It is located in a free standalone building, with a dedicated lot of plentiful parking. Interestingly, they have remnants of a walk-up/pick-up window in the front (was this building a hamburger restaurant in a prior life?), and with the tinted glass not allowing you to see inside, we thought maybe they were either closed or only doing carry-out. But we found the nearby door, and once we entered, were greeted very warmly by the hostess/waitress and guided to a table for 4. There isn't too much seating inside (maybe 8 tables), so could see a wait during dinner time. The menu is large, with a lot of options on a 2 sided laminated 8x14 sheet. We got some ice water, which gave us time to peruse the menu. We placed our order, with the appetizer coming first along with the soup and salad, and then main entrees soon after. By using the Yelp check-in, we got 2 pieces of complementary Mochi ice cream. Spicy Edamame ($6.95) - A generous amount, well-seasoned. 2 Item Combo ($15.95 for lunch): beef teriyaki, white fish tempura. Comes with white rice topped with furikake , pre-dressed romaine lettuce salad, fresh cucumber pieces, miso soup. Everything except the soup came in a bento tray, with each compartment filled. The beef was sliced strip steak, generous in quantity and decent quality. The white fish tempura was OK...bit greasy and needing to be eaten right away. It had been topped with various maki sauces, which made it a bit soggy. Probably not the best representation of what they can do with tempura. Seared Tuna Lunch Bowl ($15.95 only available from 11 - 3:30 M-F): Came with 5 thick slices of ahi tuna, nicely seared and seasoned on the outside, very raw on the inside. It sat on a bed of white rice, along with various greens, and a lot of homemade onion strings/straws. The dish was expertly put together, with the preparation of the fish top-notch. The fish quality was good...it's been a while since I've had seared tuna, and this version reminded me that I needed to go back to it whenever I can. Salmon Collar ($10.95) - first time having salmon collar. Have had tuna collar and yellowtail collar before, so wanted to see what the salmon version would be like. It was good, tasted like a salmon steak, except it was a bit more crumbly. There really wasn't any nooks/cranies where you could grab the best tasting fish pieces. Mango, strawberry ice cream mochi. - it was cutely decorated and was a good bite or two to finish off our meal. Service was excellent and full throughout, and the check was given and paid at the table. The value was top-notch. As my wife and I were leaving to walk back to our car, we remarked to each other: "THAT was really good"...made the rest of our day that much better. read more

This place is indeed awesome. Came on a late Monday evening and it was busy! Almost all tables were full. We were seated right away and started browsing the menu. There's a large variety of options, but I went straight for the specialty rolls. I ended up getting 2 rolls, one XOXO and one love your smile. Both were fantastic. They came out quickly, and tasted fresh. Overall I had a great experience here and would come back. It's not really cheap, but good sushi places typically aren't. For a reference point, our total was almost exactly $100 after tax and tip. Together we had 2 bottled beers and 4 specialty roles. The restaurant is a bit tight and a little cramped, but the food more than makes up for any discomfort. I'd definitely consider coming back here if in town again. read more

Ordered for the first time through door dash and was pleasantly surprised! The to go packaging was great and handled with care. Everything stayed warm and crispy. We got two rolls, egg rolls, spicy edamame, mixed tempura, and a chicken bowl. I could eat that spicy edamame every day - good flavor but not too spicy. The mixed tempura was also great and would order that again. I'm pregnant so we got the crunch roll and the NY roll. The steak on the NY roll was lightly seared on one side and raw on the other so we took it off and cooked it to be safe. The miso soup was also very good and not too salty. I don't think I would order the chicken bowl again though. While the chicken was good quality, the sauce congealed and was unappealing and had a bit of an add flavor to it.
