I ended up giving this place another try and the sushi was great! I got a bento box and the seaweed salad and crab salad were generous portions and perfectly seasoned. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The only downside I have is I tried going a third time today and they were closed. I checked their instagram beforehand and there was no post about them being closed so I thought it was safe to make the journey over. Sadly, they had a closed sign at the window. Totally understandable that things happen with small business. It would just be nice to have a heads up online so we don't waste our time coming out here to not get what we came for. read more

I just accidently tried the best sushi. The buttery soft salmon, quality is top tier. The service is so sweet! Friendly and quick. While there isn't anywhere to sit it's a quick walk up to pick up and go. Very highly recommend read more

Take out sushi! This spot is so cute! For a quicker way to satisfy a sushi craving, this is for sure a great option. If ya blink, you may miss it. Located right next to a small movie theater, and mostly recognized by the A-frame sign out front, is a walk up window to place your order. Food is made fresh while you wait. Took about 10 mins and my order was ready. Although 4th street can get quite busy, I was able to find parking right in front. Quality little place and prices are affordable. read more

A pickup window sushi joint for your takeout guilty pleasure? RetRoll recently replaced Hippea...and while I was so sad about the change because i loved those falafels, I recently decided to give them a shot during their sushi happy hour and I was not disappointed. I did ask the owner whether he would do an omakase for a budget, but he instead gracefully offered to help me order. I ended up going over budget, but it was worth it. I do wish their happy hour had a few other options (i.e. $2 off any roll) instead of the few rolls they offered, but nonetheless-if you're looking for some takeout sushi, definitely grab some sushi from here. They have a bunch of specialty rolls, as well as some classic ones. I do remember wishing they had a more classic yellowtail roll when I ordered, but either way don't let that deter you. This is a great takeout spot for sushi. Despite missing Hippea, I'm glad this neighborhood spot has come in to take its place and hopefully it's here to stay! read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Very good quality sushi in an unassuming tiny storefront. While I do miss Hip Pea dearly, I must admit it's nice having a good casual sushi option on 4th St convenient to me. Too bad the two couldn't coexist. I guess Jounetsu Ramen further west on 4th does some rolls but I haven't tried them so can't speak for their quality. The hubby and I decided to get some dinner here on a weeknight and got: Ultimate Roll - basically an omakase roll. The chef asks what you like and assembles something. I told him I was totally open and to make whatever. He asked if I liked eel (I do), and he came up with a roll with an eel base topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, crunchy tempura bits, masago, and eel sauce, which I asked for light (I hate goopy rolls). I was very pleased with this roll--it had good quality fish as well as good sushi rice and was assembled with care. Veggie Roll - fresh avocado, cucumbers and carrots with the aforementioned good rice. Simple, but well done. These weren't cheap, but I'd say reasonable for the quality. I'm looking forward to trying more of their offerings soon, like their poke bowls! The hubby was hoping to try some of their other vegan sushi that looked interesting, but according to the chef they weren't doing very well so he's discontinued them--bummer! At least most of the standard vegetarian options are vegan anyway. As with Hip Pea, just the small outdoor tables if you want to eat there--not the best on cold days, so I imagine most people get stuff to go. The chef is very personable and really cares about the food and customer service. I wish him the best and hope this place will be able to stick around! read more

A few friends and I went to check out RetRoll Sushi Long Beach. Food was yummy, service was great, for a small take-out restaurant. We had placed our orders online, it was ready in the expected timeframe. The owner was very friendly and professional. We were blessed with a nice cool evening breeze too. So glad to have a sushi spot on 4th street :) It's located next to the theatre & art du vin wine bar. I got the ultimate roll which is basically a roll they customize to your liking by asking what fish + sauces you like/don't like. I also got a spicy tuna roll which was tasty and classic. Everything was fresh & I waited about 10-15 minutes for everything to be ready. It's a walk up window so be prepared to eat it to-go! Absolutely love this place! There are a few seats outside on the sidewalk during business hours, but mostly a grab n go type set up. The wine bar next door lets you take the sushi there, which makes for a perfect combo! John takes great pride in his work, and it shows. His food to absolutely wonderful and I'd recommend it to anyone in the area. My favorites are the Ultimate Roll and the Salmon Avocado Roll. read more

RetRoll is some super delicious and clean sushi. The location is perfect for a quick pick up and stroll, and the staff is friendly and attentive. We were just there on a busy Fourth Friday and found the staff to be very patient and helpful. I spend a lot of time working in Japan each year and sometimes I find the American versions of sushi to be overly complex and involving ingredients that really are not found in Japan. RetRoll is authentically clean and tasty. They are located right near the Art Theater and steps from loads of interesting shops. Oh and we recently discovered they deliver to the wine bar next door. #perfection read more

Fills the sushi void that existed on 4th street. Simple menu done very well. The tuna sushi was melt in your mouth fish quality; absolutely delicious. The Hawaiian roll was very tasty and the chefs choice roll was customized according to whatever you want pending availability. This was great to give some variety. It is set up as a takeaway window, but they had 3 tables on the sidewalk which we ate at and made for great people watching strolling retro roll. Caught a movie next door afterwards for the perfect date night. read more

This is a wonderful little sushi spot on 4th street, Retro Row. I was craving sushi and was able to quickly place my order through the Toast app. The avocado caterpillar roll was delicious and it tasted so fresh. The person at the window was really nice and I can't wait to stop by again. There are a few tables right outside in case you want to eat there. I'm vegetarian and really enjoyed their veggie rolls! It was quick and super tasty. Will definitely eat here again. And I also liked that he didn't throw a bunch of plastic utensils and stuff in there automatically because I hate single use plastics. He was very conscious about the order. Hand rolls came out: Rock & Roll roll- baked scallops with avocado and rice ... very dry no sauce on the scallops or in the roll. Geisha roll- snow crab with avocado and rice. Good amount of snow crab but again dry with no sauce in the roll. Shrimp tempura roll- shrimp tempura with rice. Decent shrimp tempura roll. Glad I tried it but there are much better sushi places I'd rather go to.

What's funny is that we've both lived around Long Beach forever and somehow never fully connected with Oho despite hearing good things about it for years. We had randomly stopped in one afternoon recently thinking we'd just split a roll and head home, but the food ended up being so good that we kept ordering "one more thing" until we accidentally skipped dinner entirely later that night. That experience was good enough that when we found ourselves trying to figure out dinner again yesterday, Oho immediately came back into the conversation. We got there early evening and the timing was perfect. Busy enough to feel lively and like you were out for the night, but not so packed that service slowed down or the room became chaotic. The pacing of the meal was honestly one of the best parts. Dishes came out steadily without crowding the table, and everything felt very natural and relaxed. The tuna crispy rice was fantastic and a little different from the usual presentation. Perfect crisp on the outside, almost caramelized, with really airy spicy tuna on top that reminded me more of a tartare texture than the heavier versions you sometimes get elsewhere. We also had bluefin tuna, toro, salmon sashimi, a spicy scallop roll, and the Extreme Crunch Roll with light eel sauce, which ended up being surprisingly balanced and not over-the-top despite the name. Even the iced green tea stood out. Bright green, almost cloudy, super refreshing, and honestly exactly what I wanted with sushi. Service was excellent both visits. It felt very team-oriented behind the sushi bar and on the floor, which kept everything moving smoothly without feeling rushed. A couple practical notes: parking is easy overall, but the lot is shared with the motel, so just be mindful where you park and try to stay closer toward the restaurant side of the lot. Also, this feels much better suited for couples or small groups than large parties. Four people would be ideal. Six is probably pushing it unless the restaurant is unusually quiet. Really happy we gave this place another shot because it ended up being one of the more satisfying sushi dinners we've had in a while.

However, the spots are a little small compared to the large SUVs and vans parked there. So if coming at a popular time, be prepared to park far or feel like you're able to scrape the SUVs parked next to you. We ordered quite a bit: spicy Pad Thai, Bang Bang Shrimp, Pad See Ew, mango sticky rice, and of course the Thai tea with the popsicle. I'll give credit where it's due. The Bang Bang Shrimp was easily the best thing we ordered and was absolutely delicious. The Thai tea popsicle also lived up to the TikTok hype, although the actual Thai tea itself was on the sweeter side. If you love sugar, you'll probably enjoy it. My biggest complaint with the food was the spicy Pad Thai. The flavor was great, but it came with what felt like a whole chicken farm and a cameo appearance from the noodles. I ordered Pad Thai, not chicken with noodle garnish. The Pad See Ew was also noticeably salty. Now you're probably wondering why I'm giving this place a low rating if most of the food was decent. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the meal. When it was time to pay, my aunt was figuring out how much everyone needed to Zelle her since the restaurant only allows a maximum of two cards for split payments. While we were trying to do the math, our waiter stood over us watching the payment screen like he was supervising a final exam. He was clearly waiting to make sure a tip was entered. My aunt politely asked him to give us a minute, and thankfully he walked away. Maybe when you see a family actively calculating a bill, that's your cue to...actually give them a minute. Keep in mind we also tipped 20% despite all this. Throughout the meal, he did stop by our table, but it rarely felt like he was checking in to make sure everything was okay. If anything I felt rushed. He also gave off that "customer service smile" that disappears the moment you stop looking. The cherry on top for me happened as we were leaving. We had been sitting on the outdoor patio talking for a bit after paying, which is pretty normal for my family. Before leaving, I went inside to ask where the restroom was. The guy and girl behind the bar looked at each other, laughed, and then asked if I was a paying customer. Keep in mind, I was literally holding a to-go bag with leftovers from the restaurant. I responded, "Yeah, I just finished eating," while holding up the bag that made it painfully obvious. Only then did they tell me where the restroom was. Nothing says "valued customer" quite like being interrogated about whether you actually ate there while carrying your leftovers. It's unfortunate because the food had some highlights, and the restaurant itself has a cute atmosphere. But the service made it feel like customers are viewed more as transactions than guests. Between hovering over us during payment and questioning whether I even belonged there after spending money, I left feeling more unwelcomed than satisfied. I'll happily support a restaurant that appreciates my business instead of making me feel like I have to prove I earned the right to use the restroom after paying for dinner.

Another 10 minutes had passed and we were still missing my mom's roll, so we let the server know and he mentioned he forgot to put it in and it would be out shortly. While waiting for our food we weren't checked on or receive water refills when asked. Finally we are served my moms roll and another 5 minutes later the correct protein for the bento boxes. We were barley able to eat together as the first order was dropped off 30 minutes before anyone else in the party got their food, my skewers are cold, the bento boxes receives the wrong protein which we are then charged for a 3rd one, late order on a roll that arrives when the majority party is almost done eating. During this time other tables were receiving their food and service aside from US. Time to pay the bill and we notice the void of one bento box but then another added on and charged us more, we complain AGAIN to the manager this time who is checking us out for the bill he mentions they understaffed and busy but as I recall he left to go to to the liquor store. LEAVING behind his knowingly understaffed team with a busy restaurant on Mother's Day . I will say the food was delicious and great service from the cooks/sushi chef THANK YOU to the chefs for working hard making our meal they did a great job.

We got there early evening and the timing was perfect. Busy enough to feel lively and like you were out for the night, but not so packed that service slowed down or the room became chaotic. The pacing of the meal was honestly one of the best parts. Dishes came out steadily without crowding the table, and everything felt very natural and relaxed. The tuna crispy rice was fantastic and a little different from the usual presentation. Perfect crisp on the outside, almost caramelized, with really airy spicy tuna on top that reminded me more of a tartare texture than the heavier versions you sometimes get elsewhere. We also had bluefin tuna, toro, salmon sashimi, a spicy scallop roll, and the Extreme Crunch Roll with light eel sauce, which ended up being surprisingly balanced and not over-the-top despite the name. Even the iced green tea stood out. Bright green, almost cloudy, super refreshing, and honestly exactly what I wanted with sushi. Service was excellent both visits. It felt very team-oriented behind the sushi bar and on the floor, which kept everything moving smoothly without feeling rushed. A couple practical notes: parking is easy overall, but the lot is shared with the motel, so just be mindful where you park and try to stay closer toward the restaurant side of the lot. Also, this feels much better suited for couples or small groups than large parties. Four people would be ideal. Six is probably pushing it unless the restaurant is unusually quiet. Really happy we gave this place another shot because it ended up being one of the more satisfying sushi dinners we've had in a while.
