Maybe it's the other mediterranean food around the square - sajj, sababa that overshadow its red sign, maybe it's the small entrance, but I hadn't tried their greek offerings until recently despite passing this area on Kearny many times over the years. This was one of my favorite lunch spots when I went into the city for work. It's in a crowded street so I can imagine it would be difficult to find parking if you're driving. I always walked from my office so it's never an issue. The cashier is always friendly with customers. There's a couple tables in the restaurant. It's really catered for takeout orders during the lunch rush. Which is great because the food always comes out quick! My go-to order is a large gyro wrap and french fries. The french fries are superb. The best texture and taste. The gyro wrap is also great. It's extremely filling. I usually eat 3/4 of it on a day when I'm hungry. The perfect gyro! I've eaten here a few times now and it's quickly become a go-to when I'm in town. It's (relatively) cheap and (extremely) cheerful, just a great lunch. This most recent visit, they didn't have chicken which was a shame, but the lamb and beef gyro is great too. I did not like my chicken gyro at all.. maybe it's the fact that I don't know what authentic chicken gyro should taste but I didn't like that my chicken tasted rubbery and it didn't taste like real chicken. It tasted like it was made of soy chicken but it definitely didn't have the consistency of real chicken that I would expect to taste. The gyro also felt like it wasn't saucy enough nor did it have any type of unique taste or kick to it even though I did lather hot sauce on it. I'm used to the gyro being warm (or at least the meat being warm) but this gyro was completely cold and just didn't fulfill my expectations. My friend got fries wirh his order of gyro and I thought the fries were delicious and well seasoned so that was one plus. There is a free baklava if you check in! I'd make a terrible Greek. I can't dance, even if Anthony Quinn was holding onto my shoulder as he kicked up his heels on a beach in Crete. My everyday plates are Corelle, so they bounce when you try to smash them. Nope, I'd make a lousy Greek, which may mean you have to take my review of Ayola with a grain of salt or maybe a grain of orzo. But hey, I'm a big fan of the one on New Montgomery where they do something nearly magical with their fries, so I'm not sure why this one doesn't make me want to go "Ooom-pah!" Part of it, I have to admit, is location, as this Ayola stands in the shadow of Baladie on the same block where their gyros wraps are outstanding as you gaze at the mural of Petra. Here you just gaze at the condiment stand. Lamb and beef meat all in one gyros was so yummy! It's my first time that I have a mix of lamb and beef meat mixed together and in a gyros! That yogurt in the gyros was at a good, tasty amount and add that hot sauce they provide on the side, then the combination is perfection! I literally devoured the gyros in 10 minutes. Much better than those puffy pitas from the grocery store. The gyro meat was thinly shaved, though not particular crispy. I imagine they have such high turnover that it doesn't get much of a chance to sear on the spit. Still quite tasty though. The tzatziki was creamy and delicious. A bit too much romaine lettuce; I had to sweep half of it off. Falafel: Perfectly crispy on the outside then firm and grainy on the inside. It was a tad dryer than I like, but still enjoyable. I don't know why I've never tried this Greek restaurant before. But I tried it twice this past week. I tried the gyros platter salad and the falafel. The portions are quite generous. The gyros meat is tasty and the salad tasted great. I couldn't finish, had to save the falafel for snacking on later! :) My second visit, I had the sparta salad--the chicken was just ok, the spices on it were great but it was a bit dry. Me plus hot sauce don't mix well so I had to opt out. However, I did ask my friend if she liked it and she said it was the perfect amount of heat. The workers are always so friendly! Actually, this is where I first tried the new(ish) rice bowls. When I came by one day for lunch, I was having trouble deciding what to order. So I asked one of the workers about the rice bowls and her stamp of approval had me sold. I ordered the lamb/beef gyro bowl, which I find myself craving from time to time. I love the rice! I ordered the chicken shawarma bowl through mealpal. There was no wait around 1pm. They have a counter on the side where you can add hot sauce to your meal/put it in a plastic container that they provide which was pretty awesome. The portion is a nice size of rice and chicken and also came with this salsa - well not really sure what you'd call it, but it has cucumbers, tomAtoes and onion pieces, it was pretty refreshing and went well with the chicken shawarma. I really enjoyed the rice, it was very flavorful and nicely textured. The chicken was nice and tender as well. However, I was not a very big fan of the tzatziki sauce, but that could just be me. This is a solid Greek restaurant by my work. Every time you walk in, it smells horrible and then I realized, it is the smell of lamb. I love lamb but this place reeks of it for some odd reason and I have been to tons of other Greek/Middle Eastern restaurants. The food here is around average but they don't give you much meat. I ordered a lamb gyro sandwich and they gave me a huge and thick delicious pita bread and tons of sauce and lettuce but the meat just doesn't seem as much as the other ingredients. I didn't see any vertical spits but decided to try the small 7" chicken shawerma ($5.95, a 9" is $6.95, add fries and soda for $2.25). The shawerma doesn't come in a lavash wrap and the portion is much smaller than most other places in town (Baladie, Yumma's, Sunrise Deli, etc.). The chicken pieces were a bit dry and not that flavorful. They could use more sumac. The sandwich, served on a soft, fluffy pocketless pita (might be Kontos brand) had lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and a thin and tasty tzatziki sauce. You can also specify whether you'd like it spicy or not. It's a messy meal since the fillings aren't wrapped and there's quite a bit of sauce to contend with. Maybe it helped that I wasn't expecting much, but what I got for a very reasonable price was a deliciously rich and flavorful chicken shawarma filled with tender and juicy chicken, even better than the one from Oasis (which was also good). My colleague also raved about the lamb gyro as well. This is definitely one of the better lunch options in the FiDi. Whatever you order, make sure to take advantage of the turkish hot sauce, some seriously good stuff. When I was a work'n stiff on Market Street, I came here once a month or so for a lamb gyro. They have a loft upstairs and a nice bar. The seats at the bar have a commanding view of the street and the customer area. Below the loft is a giant menu of all the things at Ayola. Pretty girls come in off the street to order their food. They look up at the menu from below and smile. It appears they are smiling at me as in, "Oh! What a cutie you are!". That was the first time it happened and I wondered how it was that a lovely young girl could give a look like that to a sucked out old geezer. Then I figured it all out - she was making a menu selection. Now I go there and just pretend they are all smiling at me. I don't smile back and wave though.... that would be bad form. I have never eaten anything but the lamb gyro's here. When I first came to this place I started eating at the other gyro places. After sampling 3 different establishments with inferior gyros I made this place my one and only gyro shop. There is an Ayola on Montgomery but it isn't as good as the Kearny shop. I was introduced to Greek food when I was on vacation in Montreal years ago (Montreal has the best greek food, no?). Anyway, it's really slim pickings here in the Bay Area (not sure why). Got the combo platter, gyro platter, fries, and baklava. Lady at the cashier was friendly and helpful (ex. when I asked about the platters, she got a to-go container to physically explain portion sizes of how the various items would be distributed in the container). To that end, portion sizes were generous. Food was tasty. I wouldn't say I know Greek food that well, but a housemate who's been to Greece commented that she doesn't know if she's had hummus this good recently - except maybe in Greece.
