Oh, Oren's I missed you. This was a go to spot for everything in college: casual weekend dinner, big celebrations, date night. I haven't had it since I left the Bay so when I saw it was across the street from the cocktail bar I was at I knew this was gonna be my post-drink dinner. Of course I had to go with the classic hummus and pita, but this time my friend put me on to the hummus sabich which came topped with hard boiled egg and potato. What sounds like an absolutely wild combination is actually so delicious and makes this dish much more filling than the classic hummus. We also shared the shakshuka. I ordered the beef kabab pita through DoorDash. Before the discount it was $21.85, which is steep for a pita, but I landed a 45% off promo on orders over $20 that made the math a lot more reasonable. The sandwich itself delivered on every bite. The beef was well seasoned, and true to the name, it was packed with hummus throughout, no skimping there. The pita held everything together without falling apart, which matters more than people think with DoorDash orders. What stood out almost as much as the food was the packaging. It's clearly designed specifically for pitas, with a tear-away section that converts the box into a holding container while you eat. Not sure if this is just how the food is packaged in general or something specific to delivery, but either way it's the kind of detail that tells you a place actually thought about the eating experience instead of just shoving food into generic containers. The restaurant is decently sized, cute, and super casual with indoor and outdoor seating. We were seated immediately and well cared for by all workers. My best friend and I split the Hummus Chicken and Australian Lamb Skewers. The hummus chicken was good and well seasoned with lots of hummus. The skewers were fine but only came with a few pieces of meat which were tough to cut into but were tender. The rice was fine but not too soft and the veggies were alright. Picked up food from this location. The pita was amazing and the red pepper hummus was very good (but I like Obour Foods hummus more.) I didn't enjoy the cheese bourekas as much as I thought I would. The ordering was a little slow, as the take out counter seemed really busy with both in-person and online orders. But once I ordered, my food was ready in less than 10 minutes! I got the hummus bowl with chicken and a side and pita. The hummus is absolutely delicious, the chicken was so well marinated, and the pita was clearly baked fresh. I came in for a weekend late lunch, and had an excellent dining experience with service and food quality. The restaurant was pretty quiet, with plenty of indoor seating. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu as well as the kitchen processes. This was particularly helpful as I am vegetarian and I have celiac (strict gluten-free), so I worry about cross-contamination. They were very well aware of celiac, and how to make appropriate accomodations (e.g., separate area in kitchen, pita heated separately). I got the roasted vegetable skewer with muhamarra, jaffa-style hummus, and gluten-fre pita bread. Each component of the dish was wonderful! The gluten-free pita was soft, warm and fluffy. The muhamarra was a very unique dip; it was savory, red peppery and creamy. The hummus was thicker, and fresh with some pine nuts. The meals are on the pricier side, but I had no issues with any of the flavor! Overall, excellent choice for a nice mediterranean meal. However, a few days later I went for take-out, and ordered a gluten free pita sabich (eggplant) sandwich with a side of fries. Unfortunately when I got back to my hotel, I discovered they had given me a chicken sandwich instead. Due to distance and time constraints, I had to discard the sandwich, and ate the fries. I've never had trouble finding a table during dinner hours. If you're looking for a good wine deal, Oren's has Wine Down Wednesday, where wine is 50% off. If it's your first visit -- especially with a group, I highly recommend starting with the sampler, which comes with six spoonfuls of various dips. The dips are packed with flavor and pair beautifully with the soft, fluffy pita bread. One of my go-to orders is the hummus bowls. If you like lamb, the lamb hummus bowl is excellent: the meat is well-seasoned and incredibly tender. The chicken skewer is another solid protein option. But my experience this past weekend ended up being a bit lackluster. The servers and support staff were nice, but the guy who seated me was less friendly (from his more formal outfit, maybe he was a manager). It's possible that he was a bit overwhelmed as they seemed a bit under-staffed at the time I came in. After waiting at the entrance unacknowledged for about 10 mins, the family of 7 behind me ended up walking out, but I was hungry, so I waited patiently by the entrance. Upon being seated, they offered water and a small side of pickled cabbage. It was nice to nibble on something while looking at the menu, though I probably wouldn't have gone with something so sour as a starter. Nevertheless, once I ordered, the food came out pretty quickly. The pita was was warm and initially soft, but ended up drying a bit quickly, which happens when places re-heat "older" breads. The hummus was decently smooth, but could have used a bit more garlic or seasoning. The Israeli side salad I got was old - the tomato, cucumber, and onion cubes in it were all mushy. And the beef and lamb kebabs were small, dry, and tough - probably from being over-cooked. While I appreciated that everything was not too salty, all of the food could have used a bit more seasoning. Maybe this is done to appeal to a wider palate. I was hungry, so this did the job as a relatively balanced meal compared to other options nearby. Mint lemonade was yummy. The only downside was there was too much hummus for the two small pita breads they give you.
