I've had a super positive experience here! I first came in as I was interested in a macaw that was organized. Mandy educated me on birds over multiple trips, and ultimately steered me toward a sweet Amazon who was a much better fit for me. She cares greatly for the birds and vets potential adopters carefully- with the special emphasis that they must pick you, and it must be a good fit. Plus, they have many birds in sanctuary, ie not up for adoption- that were rescued from abusive situations. She does so much to keep them safe. Twice a day it's vacuumed and bird trays changed- it's very clean considering how messy birds are! Also, I love all of the selection of bird toys! read more

Updated review: Mandy is now texting a minor confronting her for my "scathing" review. How disgusting of a human. They need to be shut down immediately. The birds look like they're in distress, plucking, dirty, and not well kept. Mandy and who I assume is her husband were so rude when saying hello to one of the birds they go "that's a female, females don't talk.. that's a female". I didn't care if it was or not I'm showing a bird attention. When I mentioned I had cockatiels they were shoving toys down my throat for me to buy when I was not looking to get any. We were looking at a 24 year old sun conure and she was selling him for $600. She wouldn't lower the price and said they usually go for $1200!!!! What a lie! I have visited AZ Exoctic bird rescue on several occasions ! They were friendly and professional. I was amazed that all the cages of the rescue birds were very clean, along with food dishes. Anyone who has birds knows how difficult it is to keep cages and food bowels clean. A very special place for our feathered companions. Plus they let the bird choose its person. Which bird lovers know is very important for the bird to have a great environment !! Plus you can buy food and toys at a reduced price. And they do grooming for a donation. Clean, no offensive smells. Owner welcomed me and asked that I sign in for liability purposes and sanitize hands. Several people were cleaning, feeding and talking to the birds. One bird was being ornery but assistant was gently telling the parrot ' pretty girl'. I fell in love with the tiny, colorful zebra finches and was told they cost $10 bucks. Something to ponder. Trying to take a major Mitchell's cockatoo or she already had her without trying to find the proper home. I had a Major Mitchell's cockatoo stolen from me 3 years ago in Phoenix. She was recently found flying in a park, and the breeder was called, who later called me. The breeders number was clearly listed on the birds legband. Mandy had posted in a Facebook page, that she's had the bird for several years. If this is true, why did she never call the number? The other option is that she never had the bird and was trying to get a free bird from the situation. I messages Mandy about this and she quickly blocked me. I have been working with animals for years and I have never seen this level of lying/ stealing. If you actually care about your birds, don't re-home them to this business or buy products from a person who lies and or steals. I'm so happy my parrot is back with me (no thanks to Mandy and her shady business practices.) Also, my birds nails were very long, like a year of no care long, Mandy if you did have her, you do a bad job at caring for birds. read more

I've really enjoyed coming in here every time I've visited. The owner loves birds and is very knowledgeable. Although I purchased my cockatiel elsewhere, I wanted to come and see what the store was like. I received fantastic help from the owner and she even sold us a cage she wasn't using for probably a third of what cages that size go for. I am a first-time cockatiel owner so I really appreciated her help choosing toys and food he would enjoy. They also offer grooming and boarding services which is a plus. I spoke with Mandi several times before visiting the store. As someone who showed dogs, it is extremely important where you place your pup or rescued dog. The same exists for birds. We as breeders of dogs or rescued birds are aware of where we place them. Is *our* responsibility to find a suitable home. All of Mandis negative comments that you profess to be true are not my experience at all. Mandi, yes Mandi that evil mean woman is only a woman who cares about her birds. As a business, she can refuse service to anyone. Apparently, she refused the negative comments. Let me reassure you of one thing. When involved in animals of any sort. Theres a language, body language from the animal and a new owner. If you dont understand "bird", please dont tweet bulsht about Mandi. read more

So wait, let me get this straight...you can't adopt a bird unless you agree to bring it back every 6 weeks so they can mutilate it's wings? WTAF? What that tells me is they only really vette potential clients by distance, NOT suitability, and then clip the birds wings as an insurance policy! Beyond irresponsible. The moral black hole of wing clipping aside, it's lazy, and makes AZ Exotic Bird "Rescue" just another pet store, albeit with a service contract scam, not a true rescue. Add to that the multitude of poor reviews on Google, Yelp and FB going back a few years mentioning the unsanitary conditions, the stress level and rough handling of the birds by staff does nothing to make me rethink that assessment. I have been supporting this business for about 3 years now. Not only do I purchase my food, toys and treats for my flock from Mandi I also have purchased a macaw from her. The reviews are all over the page here, however I can only post my experience., which is wonderful. This is a welcoming establishment. I have always felt welcomed to visit the birds , browse around to check out new toys,treats etc without her hovering over my every step but asking periodically if I was ok which I can appreciate. These are rescued or surrendered birds which means they likely have some sort of issue or have been neglected. Mandi has always been upfront and straightforward about any short coming they may have , or not. Which I also like. When you leave there with your purchase you can feel good about it. I visited this bird shop again when in the Scottsdale area. They did move from their previous location in Tempe. I think they are doing a fabulous job here as well. The birds are happy and the place is very clean. They know their stuff and suggested some seed mixtures I can give my bird to try (he's very picky, but he's liking it!). I wasn't going to write a review but I am very upset about my experience yesterday. I called to speak with a woman who knew my father. My father had 5 birds from this place, and passed away last week. I live in Maryland, but made a promise to my dad to care for these birds! The woman put me on hold for ten min to come back and say I need approval from the woman who surrendered them! What?! So a stranger can adopt them but I have to have approval from someone who gave them up to keep my promise to my dad? I understand I would have had to pay for boarding until I arrived in Arizona, but I was more than willing to do so. My dad had a lot of trust in this place and I am so incredibly saddened and disappointed that this is the outcome. read more

Called in to ask about their macaws and pricing . The manager had me on speaker and I could not hear her . I did mention this to her and she said " well I'm getting ready for a doctors appointment, what do you want ?" I then said " ok....and proceeded to ask her what their prices range for their rescue macaws" she replied back with " we don't give those prices out until the bird or a bird picks you " when I started to ask another question she hung up on me .... I've been in a few times and each time I'm met with scrutiny. All I was doing was buying bird toys and yet I walk out fuming because the care my bird receives was not enough to this woman. My bird eats fresh veggies daily, no pellets because of his corn allergy, and is almost never in his cage for more than an hour during the day. But yet, that's not good enough and I don't know what I'm doing. I need to feed my bird seeds, peanuts, fruits, fortified pellets, and give him toys that he could potentially choke on. And not that toy, that one isn't a good choice... this giant one that's more expensive is great. He also needs sand perches cause nothing says "fantastic bird owner" quite like foot sores. And the birds. These poor birds. There are barely any truly enriching toys in their cages, the poop hasn't been scrubbed off in months (just lining changed), and they look stressed beyond repair. One day I has asked to see a smaller bird species and the moment she opened the cage door, the bird was markedly scared. Running away from her, I would too, because instead of asking for a step up, she manhandled the poor thing and it was ferociously biting. She handed him off to me and asked that I hold him tight and close... Uhh no. I let him hold on to my hand and let go of his body and he had an instant change in his demeanor. He even stepped up for me without fuss. The "adoption fee" is not an adoption fee, it's purely for the cash. A lovely hand raised and hand tamed baby cockatiel is $200-$350 depending on color mutation. A cockatiel here is $400, is it hand raised? Probably not. Hand tamed? Maybe after a few weeks of reacclimatizing it. This is not a rescue. It's a bird store. It has no business being a rescue. Yes, people drop off their unwanted birds, but by no means are they being rescued. This place is just the middle man, a glorified Craigslist. read more

When the novelty of a bird wears off, or owners realize their bird is not going to talk, merely squawk, or an owner no longer wishes to accessorize their home or office with a bird, the AZ Bird Rescue comes to well, the rescue. Birds also end up at the the Bird Rescue when owners due to death or illness are no longer able to care for them. A really wonderful place. It was my first trip there but not my last. All of the birds looked healthy, well fed, and relatively happy (considering some were rescued from horrible situations.) Yes, there are some birds with plucking problems and other behavioral issues. But this is not a pet store but an actual rescue. I have my eye on a sulfur crested cockatoo they have there to become one of my flock. I have several birds myself. As far as the store prices were great, lower than a corporate stores and I am very happy that the profits go back into helping the birds in the rescue. I give AZ Exotic Bird Rescue two thumbs way up! They don't try to price gouge their customers because it's a specialty pet (bird) shop; and, it's a bird rescue! What more could you ask for. :) If you don't have birds, it's fun to visit and spend some time loving on the rescues that are housed there while they are waiting for their forever home. Who knows, maybe you'll be moved and want to take a feathered friend home or, at the very least leave a donation to help keep Mandy and those who work and or volunteer there up and running. read more

I moved in very close to this shop and was very taken by it. Great people doing a great thing, great birds given a second chance. Because I am in such close proximity, I swing by as often as possible to see my friends Murphy and Diego (Birds, not people). If I had my own home I would take Diego with me in a heartbeat. Anthropomorphism is an amazing thing to experience with these winged buddies of mine. I just moved out here on impulse about two weeks ago and am working hard to, well, find gainful work in my field. You see, having a bird is more responsibility than many believe, so having at least a medium sized place where bird chirping is not an issue is very important. I hope to take on one of these birds eventually so hopefully my current endeavors end successfully. The staff here is great, the birds are great, and the environment itself breathes life into me. It's a wonderful experience to see such simple operations working to do good in the community without turning into a money making machine. I hope that the funds they do retain last a long while, as a place like this closing down for anyway would be a big downer for the community. Mandi at Exotic Bird Rescue is AMAZING! I had an emergency situation with a neighbor who suddenly fell ill and was unable to return home for an extensive length of time. I had no knowledge of birds and was in a panic on what to do with the bird having already been home alone for 2 weeks. The minute I walked in the door, Mandi greeted me and immediately pulled the bird from the travel tote to evaluate her condition. Mandi not only knew all about the breed, off the top of her head she knew how much the bird should weigh and the food needed to bring the health to what it should be until her owner was able to take over. I was so thankful to find Mandi - I truly do not know what I would have done without her. read more

This facility is beyond atrocious. The owner, Mandy, is quite rude, and when we brought our bird in for boarding, along with the food we wanted him to be given, Mandy accused my mother of stealing the food when there was only half in the bag and she realized it was not even sold in the store. That should have been a red flag but we disregarded it. I picked my bird up after a week, and found that his feet were quite sore after the grooming we had requested. We had had our bird groomed in other places before, and this never happened, but now my bird topples over and can't stand from pain, with his feet being warm from inflammation. In addition, his beak is agitated, and again, we've had his beak groomed at other facilities before with no issues, and now he is constantly favoring it. This place has no business calling itself a bird rescue with its horrid treatment of both people and birds. read more

I just wanted to write an update to my previous review of AZEBR. This morning, one of my cockatiels (that we adopted from the rescue) decided he didn't want to climb down off the perch to reach his morning scrambled eggs. So he threw himself down the cage and hurt himself. There was a couple of tiny drops of blood. To me it was the end of the world. My son and I were nearly beside ourselves with worry for our "baby". As it is right before payday we were short on cash and a trip to the vet would be impossible unless the situation was dire. So we called the rescue to ask questions. Tyler tried to walk me through everything I needed to do over the phone. He could sense my growing panic at what I needed to do so he and Curt hopped in the truck and came over. I live far away from where they were, but they didn't care. They knew the bird needed help and that I did, too. :) The showed up, handled the situation (it was very minor) and calmed an anxious mommy and son down and gave us tips in case this happened in the future. Does this sound like a rescue that doesn't care? That's after money and ripping people off? No, it does not. The guys got NOTHING out of this trip. I even offered gas money since they had to come so far and they turned it down. They said that the birds well being is what mattered. They didn't have to come. In fact, they could have just said to call a vet because they weren't vets. But they care about their charges - even after they find a forever home. And because we have a relationship with them, they care about the bird's new family as well. Seriously, you can't find a better place than the AZ Exotic Bird Rescue. These guys CARE. read more

Tyler and Curt are extremely knowledgeable and take excellent care of the birds. Tyler and Curt also do an excellent job of continuing to support the birds even after adoption. We have used them as a resource on behavioral questions and we bring our birds back to the rescue for beak and nail trims. I have adopted several birds from AZ Exotic Bird Rescue, I purchase all my toys there and I purchase my bird food from them. I have worked with AZEBR for years. They have a wealth of knowledge and could not be more helpful. Curt and Tyler could not take better care of their birds and they are so helpful and kind to work with. I would encourage anyone looking for a bird or bird toys and food to go see them. The food is fresh and the prices are as good as going directly to the people who supply to most of phoenix (I wont mention the name but I have shopped both places). The rescue is clean, they take every precaution be sure the birds we adopt are happy and healthy. I cannot say enough good about these guys. I am shocked to see a bad review and would have to chalk that up to a person having a bad day. They are the best. I am a customer for life. read more

I went to visit Arizona Exotic Bird Rescue in Scottsdale, Az.. I had a bad experience with the previous owner and wanted to meet with the new owners. I was totally impressed how they have turned the rescue around. The birds are well taken care of and attended too. The owner knows all the past history of the birds and is very knowledgeable in the care of each individual bird. My dealings with the owners Tyler and Curt have been very positive and I would recommend visiting. They have a huge selection of birds to choice from and the low prices on food and toys are great! They also have started a bird club which meets once a month and is very informative and educational. read more

i came into the store today and the staff that was there was very helpful, kind and seemed to really care for these birds. however this is 3 weeks in a row I have been in and nobody was there on a Wednesday to groom my bird. I have been promised many times that Tyler would be there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to do groomings but never seems to follow through. I am very disappointed with the fact that the owners of this store never seem to be there, its only the volunteers who are unable to do groomings. read more

I went there thinking to adopt a bird and said so as I greeted the lady at the front desk. From that moment on she was rude and condescending to me. Maybe she thought I was a poor bird owner because I have mixed sex birds in one cage? I am not a breeder and have never sold any birds for profit. Also, if that was my goal why would I go to a rescue or ("gasp!") I could just breed my own? Since I was there already I walked around to say hi to the birds. Most of them had feather plucking issues and some of the cockatiels appeared unhealthy. I am not sure if they were rescued that way or if they are stressed from being locked in the cages all day. Otherwise the place was clean. I wish this place was more welcoming. Since I wasn't allowed to adopt a bird there I ended up going to a pet store which is what the rescue is trying to discourage. It was a very disappointing experience. I hope the owners reevaluate their (non-profit) business plan to be more educational. read more

this is a response to Annie S. that claimed she saw "bed bugs" in the rattan furniture. First off they weren't bed bugs. and 2nd if you go back you wont notice that furniture there.. You must realize I am sure, that they are non profit, and most likely this was donated furniture. At any rate I believe you have had a horrible experience but I think you should go back and give them another chance. They would not take a complaint like that lightly and I would have said something. The owners are very aware of the birds histories, and are very good at what they do. In my opinion this is a top notch organization, and the people who volunteer work very hard while they are there. You wont find any birds mistreated there and personally if you want to rescue a bird, Why wouldn't you want to keep an open mind. read more
