I'm a big fan of mediterranean food, eat it a lot. I've never had mediterranean food (or any food period for that matter) be this flavorless. I can't say anything tasted bad, because it had no flavor. The kebob, rice, meat pie, even the hummus, nothing. And the meat pie meat was grooooooossssss. Very low quality beef in there, lot of fat and gristle. Also my delivery took almost twice the estimated time. But really I give 1 star here because the food was not good. read more

I've been to Azama for food before and thought it wasok - had the vegetarian plate. the hummus had an off taste that day but everything else was good. went in again the other week with a friend who had two CoupMe's that expired in December. Azama told us we could not use them and that they'd stopped accepting them a month earlier. We tried calling CoupMe but their office wasn't open on the weekend. While we were in Azama trying to decide what to order, we observed two guys going through the same thing we were, with a Restaurant.com coupon. Azama was telling them the site offered the deal and they didn't want to offer it anymore. Basically, these people are completely unprofessional about how they are doing business and putting deals out there. If I show up with a valid coupon, I expect you to offer it. Period. I don't need to hear some bullshit about how you don't do it anymore. If you decide to revoke the coupon, you should set a deadline and notify anyone who has purchased it. Boston is a city, but it's not a great food city - for if it were, it would have the staple of all wordly cities I've been to (London, New York, Berlin, Hong Kong...): the delicious torpedo of joy (that's what she said...) known as the falafel/shawarma rollup. Well... Azama to the rescue. I've had amazing shawarma from Dubai to Geneva, and Azama holds its place. We got free samplers on our first late-night venture into this clean, unassuming place. Unlike Moody's, it's ACTUALLY open till 3 am, meaning you can eat anything off the menu; and similarly unlike most other places in Boston or anywhere, the kebabs are made fresh on the grill to order, the falafel is crispy on the outside, shawarma is moist and well-seasoned, and the desserts are homemade. The kofta kebab is probably my favorite - so tasty and tender. Azama, the owner, is available and amicable at all hours, and his pride shows through in his food. The prices and portions are great - and though satisfying after a drunken night out, try and go when you're coherent and, ideally, famished. Your senses will thank you. read more

I picked up a shawarma combo here recently, my first time at Azama Grill. I don't know if it was a fluke or the 4.0 average star is a joke or all from late night drunken binges with wacked out taste buds, but the food was horrible. The chicken shawarma was greasy, with bits of beef mixed in. The hummus was ok, the baba gannoush was inedible. Everything generally tasted like it was 3 days old, and promptly thrown out within 3 attempted bites. I'm familiar with Egyptian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisine. I don't think any of these applies to what I took away from Azama. I really worry about the people giving this place 3 or more stars whilst sober, and what kind of mediocre shawarma experiences they've had, to think this was good. After a night of hanging out in Brighton/Allston, we've dubbed it AllBright, Hach (our friend in the vid) promised us some awesome falafel and kabobs. We trustingly followed along and glad we did. Recently, I discovered I'm on a neverending quest to find great falafel. Azama Grill has these paintings on the wall in some sort of "old style." Maybe I could throw out some words like "chiaroscuro" or "composition" but really who gives a shit and why do I even feel the need to achieve descriptive specificity on the painting style in a review about the food? They're these evocative ancient-looking paintings that add a lot to the grimy little hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. The falafel is awesome! I actually had two falafel sandwiches in one night. One at Garlic 'n Lemons and one at Azama. I have to say that the falafel was definitely better at Azama. However, the accessories surrounding the falafel may have been better at Garlic n' Lemons. I could feel the crunch of the greens in the falafel at Azama. Now that's sayin' something! I must qualify this review by telling you it's coming from a Jew who has no ties to the Sephardim. I am a pale, weakling ashkenazi whose ancestors hail from the ghettos of Eastern Europe. My stock was nourished on beets and potatoes....but...perhaps somewhere deep within my racial memory lies carnal desire and sensitized tastebuds for Falafel. Falafel sandwiches are so goddamn cheap and I hope they stay that way. It's almost like I can say to my fiance/girlfriend that I would've spent just as much at the supermarket to make the goddamn falafel and it wouldn't have come out as good! I generally reserve hot & dirty for my martini only... So I was pretty displeased with my time in Azama Grill. I got food to go and I was tortured with being in the establishment while I waited for my food. I found out that if I just walked outside I would have been slightly less sweaty. Oh well. Falafel was way over cooked, to the point of it being very hard to eat. Also, I could barely taste anything except cucumbers. I hate cucumbers. I thought it wouldn't be too overwhelming so I let him put it on, but the cucumber to falafel ratio was about 50-50. Fail. This is not the worst falafel I've ever eaten but its pretty close. I began by placing my delivery order on Yelp, but decided to just call them instead. This was because I wanted to add goodies into my mixed shawarma rollup and, since their goodies are not listed on their menu on Yelp, I thought it best to just speak with somebody. Guy #1 answers the phone, brashly gets my phone number and address (I need to repeat digits over and over again), and then abruptly hands the phone to his colleague, without warning. Guy #2: "Where exactly do you live?" Me: "I just told you exactly where I live." Guy #2: "Well, that's kinda far for us. How big is your order?" Me: "Order is just for me. By the way, I'm within your range on Yelp. I should have just ordered on there, but I wanted to make life easier for you all..." Guy #2 (I paraphrase): "Wait, are you sure you are within range on Yelp?" Me: "Um, yeah, I'm sure [then I briefly explain how Yelp's delivery system works]... But I am obviously a huge inconvenience for you all..." Guy #2 [after silent confirmation of my prior statement]: "Well, I can recommend a place closer to you that also does delivery." Me: "Well, I know that place, and I also know that they deliver, but I called you for a reason... Anyways, forget about it." My coworkers and I went here for lunch on a Friday at the insistence of one of us because he had tried it at 2am one night. This was in spite of the fact that we love Garlic n Lemons just down the street. I think most reviews are clouded by the fact that people have the drinking-out-late munchies, because it did not live up to the hype. First off, any place that is EMPTY on a Friday at 12:30 is suspect for me. There was just one guy working the place, taking orders and preparing our food. He was quick considering there were 7 of us. The chicken shawarma was spicy but not eventful. It was missing the garlic yogurt I had come to expect at GnL. The "Egyptian Fries" were just steak cut fries with heavy salt and pepper with a dollop of warm mayo. Not my favorite. The worst part for me was how filthy the place was. The glass on the display counter was streaked and dirty and the sides of the cabinet had stains and streaks from top to bottom. The lowest part of the case had the dirt of 10 NE winters caked on it. The sneeze guard over the food prep was also heavily stained and dirty on both sides. It really made me wonder how clean the kitchen was and what might be going into my food. I think other reviewers must have beer goggles when they come into this place drunk and hungry because it was disgusting. Worst people to deal with. RUDE, ARROGANT and by that I mean everyone at the stores. I dealt with them twice. Once in-store and the other one for delivery. Initially the delivery was suppose to made in 45 minutes which took an hour for the person to call me just to tell that the food will be delivered in another 15 minutes. I ordered delivery at 1am and the food that arrived was absolutely delicious! The beef and lamb roll-up had a generous serving of juicy meats and I liked that there was not too much fat or gristle in it. The tabbouleh was flavorful and addictive. My fav spot in Boston to eat. CHEAP - Big plate of food for 11-12$. Beef/Lamb Shwarma is really good. The only competitor this place has as far as I'm concerned is Garlic & Lemons on Harvard Ave. Highlights - The Shwarma plates are generous in proportions and served over rice. Always comes with Hummus and a Salad Specialties that may be overlooked, but that this place does REALLY well - Baba Ghanoush - Charred Eggplant Puree with Tahini. It's a really good dip that goes well with Pita Ful Medames - This one....damn man. It's like possibly the best Bean dish I've ever had. I find it difficult to describe, but they pull it off very well. It's basically slowly stewed beans in this amazing sauce. Not sure what's in it. Butter+Tahini? Some spices? I would suggest getting both together with a Shwarma plate + A side of extra pita. Oh and the garlic sauce. How did I forget the garlic sauce. Hmmmmm, I just don't understand the hype. Certainly not meriting 4.5 stars on yelp. I visited for lunch with my boyfriend and we ordered a range of items off the menu. Lamb schwarma, chicken schwarma, baba ganoush, egyptian fries, cucumber yogurt salad. The chicken was sketchy to say the least seasoned with 'unusual' flavors, & not in the good sense of the word. The salad had an artificial sweetener taste to it and the fries look like the kind cheap diner's buy frozen in huge quantities. We had plenty of leftovers, none of which we bothered to take home. I can understand how this place might survive as a food stand but not as a restaurant. Overall, Azama was nothing to write home about. They make their money by selling drunk kids overpriced crap. Twice I went in around 1am (not drunk, just hungry) and was first treated very poorly by the staff, I then proceeded to order. As the last word of my order came out of my mouth, the rude guy behind the counter handed me a roll-up. **I know, thats the fastest service ever, which is completely possible because they were able to read my mind and know what i was going to order before i even walked in the door. I repeated what i ordered and he assured me that was what was in it. FALSE. When I went in the next week and the same thing happened, I called him out on it and was called a liar. I first want to say THEY ARE EXTREMELY NICE AND PLEASANT, but please don't hate me! I thought Azama was A-OK, and I definitely would go back if I was in the area. I came here on Christmas day and Azama was open. I entered the restaurant and immediately fell in love with their music that sent me on a mini nostalgic trip back to Morocco (they're Egyptian). I came here HUNGRY and ordered the CHICKEN SCHWARMA PLATE, 2 EGYPTIAN TEAS (one for my friend and I) and an appetizer of EGYPTIAN FRIES. CHICKEN SCHWARMA PLATE: Decent. I'm happy the the rice was a lot BETTER than other places that I have been, but I felt the chicken and salad that came with it lacked spices. Overall I felt it was just a smidge too small for ~$7 EGYPTIAN FRIES: Came HOT, CRISPY with a nice SPICE to it. There was also some kind of dip that looked like butter, but (to me) didn't really have a taste to it. EGYPTIAN TEA: VERY VERY VERY GOOD!! One of the workers came over and brought us a pot and set up our tea for us by adding sugar, stirring and serving us. VERY VERY VERY NICE!! I loved the tea. For dessert I wanted to try a bit of everything. Their desserts are all $1.49 each, and you get one piece. I think it's nice that if you want a lil' suttin' suttin' after you eat, the desserts are priced just right for ONE piece that'll hit the spot. Don't go crazy and try to sample each of them (like I did--EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ALL GOOD), because they're not a bakery T-T and it'll rack up your bill at $1.50 a piece. OVERALL: I strongly recommend the tea. The fries are done nicely, and are crispy, so no need to worry about getting soggy fries. I'm really shocked by all the praise for this place. I got a shawarma roll up that was dry, bland, and disappointing. The place isn't expensive, but I probably wouldn't accept a free one from here. As a Chinese-raised American who discovered Middle Eastern food for the first time as a student in Montreal, Middle-Eastern food has been, and currently is my go-to food. I persistently sample many different restaurants and menu-items, always on the lookout for something new to blow me taste buds away. Visiting Boston for the weekend, I was highly curious to see what the particular food-scene was like out here. Upon entering Azama Grill, I'll admit to being initially skeptical with the minimal and near-drab interior. I placed an order for the Azama Combo: sampler of falafel, chicken/beef, cucumber salad, tabbouleh, baba ganoush, hummus, served pita. I struck a conversation up with an Azama employee named Nour. He said he was once an Azama customer who would come for "baba ganoush by the spoonful and the kebabs". As we talked about the food, and how he would make everything from scratch, it was clear that he was not only friendly, but passionate about what he did. My food came, and this is where the real review begins. I think the best way to go about this is to look at each element of the combo separately. Falafel - Molded, shaped, and fried ON THE SPOT. The golden brown exterior was crunchy, but easily gave way to the moist, steamy interior. The Falafel was well seasoned, and had an impressive texture as well. Chicken & Beef- The rotating spit gave off an audible sizzle, so I ordered both, because I couldn't make up my mind. Both the chicken and the beef had a nice sear on the exterior, and were tender/moist. However, it was too salty for my palate. Cucumber Salad- The cucumbers were fresh, possessed a satisfying crunch, and was all-in-all a refreshing side which complemented the main elements well. Tabbouleh- The Tabbouleh was ok, nothing special. The parsley was probably chopped and re-chopped which created a texture resembling my own home-made attempts at Tabbouleh. It could have used a touch more lemon juice, and possibly mint/green onion. Baba Ganoush/ Hummus- Delicious, both were just amazing. Smooth enough to emphasize the creaminess, but possessed enough texture to retain the identity of the original ingredients. An additional (+) to the Baba Ganoush, I just loved the taste of roast eggplant...well done! * Hot sauce- A special mention to the hot sauce. Its packed heat, but also intense amounts of flavor. I used an entire small side cup, and needed more - just that good. On a whole, the meal was incredibly memorable and well-balanced. My favorite part is that the sides like tahini, hummus, baba ganoush, hot sauce, all came with the meal at no extra charge. The price was incredibly cheap at under 10$ (for both chicken and beef) and came with a desert on the house. To those familiar with Montreal Shwarma, this is on-par with the all-popular student pit stop, Boustan, and even rivals some of the higher-end middle eastern restaraunts Iv'e eaten at. Do not pass up this wonderful hole-in-the wall restaurant for its modest exterior. We tried lamb kabab...which had so much flavor and was fresh and juicy..chicken shawarma was excellent..LAMB CHOPS was the highlight..ive never eaten so tender,fresh,juicy chops..i have finally found an authentic middle eastern food.. The last time I was there, sitting across from my boyfriend, I loudly (and apparently seemingly apropos of nothing, according to him) proclaimed: If you live in Allston, and you haven't been here yet, YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE! As a hummus fan, Azama Grill is definitely a must go place for me. Their home-made hummus and chilly sauce make everything tasty. I had the kabob plate and the vegetarian plate, combined with the lentil soup, it was really a big satisfying meal. I highly recommend their dessert which is not something you can get anywhere else. I was happy to see a Shawarma place on Harvard Ave, however, as someone who knows what Shawarma and Middle eastern food should taste like, Azama is not very impressive. They need to work on making quality food, that's really what matters. Everyone who opens a Middle eastern place has an opportunity to do better than all existing places in Boston, but somehow Azama did not capitalize on that opportunity as far as I'm concerned. The kitchen quiet honestly is almost three-quarters the place! This leaves customers squeezing very uncomfortably. Can you please make your spaceous kitchen smaller and extend the customer/seating area? The tall seats do not help either. I prefer to sit in a small table facing and chatting those I'm eating with. Desserts are just not worth the price. Blunt, old and not fresh at all. If you want to do better, listen to those who are giving you honest advice and are grading you 3 stars or less. read more

It eliminates the need for a White Castle or a late-night Taco Bell. All things taken into consideration, Azama Grill is a 5-star godsend. I love the people who work here. They are the nicest and sweetest people in ALL OF ALLSTON. Service is mind-blowingly good. On Food: The vegetarian falafel is a party in my mouth. I think the vegetarian sampler plate is ok, but definitely not as good as any of their wraps. I'm also a HUGE fan of their Egyptian coffee. My boyfriend thinks their fries are to-die-for. Although I do like the fries themselves, I'm not a huge fan of the mayo they put on it. I agree with another review that this is a bar-goers paradise, eliminating the obligatory but unwise late-night trip to McDonald's or White Castle in favor of something more flavorful and satisfying. But I disagree with any review that says this place is only good if you're drunk at 1:30 in the morning. Luckily, these reviews are few and far between. Part of what makes this place so good is that it has ALL the trappings of a mediocre post-bar munchie spot--cheap, located in Allston, open till 2 am, counter service--but manages to transcend them in favor of high quality, flavorful MIddle Eastern food. My go to is the Beef-Schwarma roll up. They cut off a hefty portion of meat, throw it in a saute pan with some sauce and grilled vegetables, put the whole thing on pita, add some salad and yogurt, after paying 5.45 plus tax you're good to go. It's a good amount of food, but not soo much that your first thought upon receiving it is:quantity over quality. If you want a bigger portion, pay a little more and get one of the plates. You'll get your entree served with rice, egyptian salad, and tahini sauce Their Egyptian salad is great, the hoummos is delicious. In my opinion, both the Chicken Schwarma and the Falafel have been slightly less consistent (the've been a little dry in the past). But overall, I'm blown away by how flavorful the food is, especially for the location, and especially for the price. I've also noticed that a lot of the negative reviews are based on delivery. I was hanging out with a friend of mine who had to give a quote on a job in Allston. It was lunch time and I am not familiar with the area. We drove along Harvard Ave. and I saw this little shop with a very cool sign. I didn't want pizza or a sub, so when I noticed that it was a Middle Eastern grill, I wanted to try it. As soon as we got in, I felt like we were in an Egyptian cafe. Cool music, cool artwork, and a very nice aroma! I got a falafel while my friend got a chicken shwarma. The guys working behind the counter were very friendly and actually said hello and thank you.... good start! Even the owner introduced himself and made us feel very welcomed. How many times can you say that? Now, to the food. My falafel was incredible! TONS of delicious spices, fresh veggies, and chicken. My friend's shwarma looked soooo good and he gave me a piece. WOW was it good! Chicken was moist and fresh as well...... so I got one too! I had room in my stomach but just barely. We got a baklava to go and we split it in his truck. YUM!! I'm hoping that my friend has another job in Allston because this is the place for our lunchtime digs! Definetly recommend this place for GREAT FOOD! read more

I'm not usually one to go out of my way to make a poor review, but in this case I really feel it's necessary. I went to this place based on the outstanding reviews from other yelpers, and I gave it 3 chances before finally deciding to write this review. On all 3 occasions that i had a shwarma roll up, the meat has not come directly off the rotating rotisserie, but rather some unknown location, after which it was reheated in a pan with some pretty nasty looking liquid. Each time i have asked for some a little more tahini sauce on my roll up, which has resulted in an angry look from the guy making the sandwich. The salad thats put in is mushy and not very flavorful and the meat itself is gristly and chewy. Ok I'll stop with the criticism. The prices ARE quite reasonable for the quantity of food. But, if you want my advice, pay a little more and go to Rami's or Garlic and Lemon, both nearby and worth the trip. Even if you're wasted and walking home from the bars and it's the only thing open that late, I would still think twice before you make this your drunk munchies selection. read more
