My friend and I ventured to the Big City to do a bit of shopping and planned to return to Kerrville in time for lunch. But as usual, we dallied along the way, it was nearing noon and our last stop was in the same mini-mall as Azro. We're both familiar with Middle Eastern but not Afghani in particular, so decided to drop in. No photos from me this time as the lunch was unexpected but there are many excellent ones contributed by prior reviewers. The owner brought us menus an took our drink orders. My friend remarked that he had an extremely kind face and I had to agree. He and his family escaped Kabul about 30 years ago at the beginning of the Communist occupation. But there was no bitterness, no "poor me," just a man who accepted the circumstances as they were and, as many immigrants have done, turned hardship into success. A look through the menu provided some familiar and some foreign delights. Knowing that if a restaurant can handle the simple, very familiar dishes well the more complex ones will follow suit, my friend ordered Kabab-E-Morgh (chicken) while it was Kabab-E-Kofta (ground beef) for me. We both ordered mint tea. With the tea we were treated to a complimentary appetizer. Extremely simple--chunks of feta (or similar) cheese, toasted pita slices and mint leaves. "Make a sandwich," he said. When I took a bite, those simple three ingredients yielded a multitude of flavors. It was one of those dishes where the individual ingredients and the dish as a whole can be tasted at once. Very rare, but there it was. The tea was excellent; delicately flavorful and sweet. The sugar had been added while brewing, much like the Indian chai masala. Soon the entrees arrived. The meats were served on a mound of basmati rice and tiny squares of pita, with a small salad and a vinegary dressing on the side. We split the meats between us and dug in. I dipped a piece of chicken in the dressing; really nice contrast, but I preferred to reserve the dressing for the salad. The chicken was moist and extremely tender; it was breast meat which can over-cook and dry out within 30 seconds. That the small chunks were cooked perfectly reveals a deft hand in the kitchen. The basmati rice followed suit. It was flavored with meat juices and had just a bit of tooth-feel; I could have eaten just that rice and gone away happy. Being a long-grained variety, this isn't the easiest thing to do but again the chef came through. The salad, while very simple, came alive with the dressing. Mixing the lettuce with the rice amped up the flavor of both. Lastly, I tried the kofta. I feared it would be dry throughout, as I've experienced in most Middle Eastern restaurants. I took a bite and wonder of wonders--it had an excellent exterior char but the interior was moist (think medium) and the flavor of the spices shown through. Those of us who have cooked for a living can well appreciate the expertise involved in achieving this. I looked across the table and my friend was chuckling. She said, "Your eyes rolled back in your head and you were making yummy sounds." Guilty as charged! For dessert my friend ordered Baghlawa, similar in appearance to baklava but with much more flavor. Three nuts--almonds, pistachios and walnuts--were used and the syrup and tasted of citrus and honey. The flavors were intense but not overly sweet. I ordered Shir-Yakh, a rosewater-flavored ice cream but unfortunately it wasn't available. The owner suggested I would be just as pleased with Ferni, a milk custard similar in texture to panna cotta but flavored with rose water. And pleased I was! I had to fight my friend for my portion as she loved it too. She relented when I gave her my "abused puppy dog eyes." Yes, I resort to such things to get more--don't you? My profile headline reads, "Always Hoping for Serendipity," and finding Azro certainly qualified as one of those rare times and we'll certainly return. Do your palate a favor and pay them a visit. The owner is very friendly he greets you, remembers your face and he is very great full you come back to his place again and again. Appetizer we had mantoo in which consists of beef dumplings seasoned with herbs and spices very well season and delicious. Badenjan Chalow-sautéed Eggplant stew cooked with onions and lamb on a bed of rice. This is an amazing dish full of flavor of herbs and spices. This is a succulent dish and highly recommended Dessert: gosh-e fil: thin phyllo dough with sugar and pistachios. Semi sweet, but delicious. Excellent food, perfect portions, perfect seasoning - can't say enough good about this place! If Afghanistan has comfort food, this is it! The owner serves you and is very kind, explaining all the fabulous food his wife cooks. They must have an awesome grill in the back, as hubbie's lamb kabob was cooked perfectly (I had to take a bite). I had the Kadu Chalow, delicious chunks of sautéed pumpkin with mint and a bit of yogurt. Prices are very reasonable, too. If you like Pasha, this is a must try. Be warned, the servings are not like Pasha but the flavor and quality is better. If you've been to Pasha...then you know what I mean. We were on a visit to San Antonio and decided to try Azro. From the minute we walked in, Amir was very attentive and friendly. We had a lot of questions and he was more than happy to help. We are adventurous eaters but hadn't had Afghani food before. When we asked Amir for a suggestion between a few dishes, he gave us a strong recommendation based on what is the most typical in Afghanistan. It did not disappoint at all. We ended up ordering Mantoo, a type of meat stuffed dumpling, as our appetizer. We loved these. The filling was seasoned very well without being overpowering. We ate them all and could have had a few orders of those as our whole meal and left satisfied. As our entree (we shared an appetizer and entree for 2 people and it was enough), we had Kabuli Palow. The lamb was pull apart tender with a savory, seasoned rice. We devoured the whole dish and were so pleased. The food was great. A few things that stuck with us: 1) Amir clearly has pride in the food he serves. 2) The food definitely has a homemade feel to it. Amir told us that his mom is the one in the kitchen cooking up the food. Overall, I would totally recommend this to anyone. Returned about a month later with family and friends (11 people) to celebrate a milestone in my life. Once again, everything was excellent. Amir made excellent suggestions for both appetizers, entrees, and desserts. He even arranged the meals so that we got to experience it as a family style meal so that everyone got to try everything. Lamb chops were succulent. Lamb shank was amazing. At the end they even brought out a special off-the-menu item (apple marmalade) that was incredible. This was my family's first time eating Afghan food and they were all delighted. Even those skeptical of the concept were well-pleased and they are now looking for other Afghan restaurants where they are located. But, if you don't have the skills or the time to cook at home, like my dear mother does, then Azro is the kind of place you can go to feel like a mom or an aunty or a nana cooked for you. And that's what makes this place inches from heaven. Azro is an odd beast: romantic yet homey. It's a good place to take a date, yet also a good place to find homemade ethnic food. The menu offers delectable selections regardless of taste. From kabobs to stews to fried specialties like sambosas (better known to most of us as samosas) and bolanees, oh you will find something. I highly recommend trying a meat-based or vegetarian stew with rice, which is a staple in Indo-Pak-Afghano-Persian cuisines. I had the kadu chalow, which is pumpkin stew served with rice and a yogurt sauce. The sweetness of the spiced pumpkin stew nicely compliments the earthy nuttiness of the seasoned yogurt sauce and the basmati rice. On the next visit, I look forward to treating myself to a kabob dish, which is probably done similar to the Persian style, rather than Indian or Turkish. Before I review the food, I would like to appreciate the interior decor. It's very authentic afghan style and it definitely improves the whole experience. Food was delicious and prices are very reasonable as well. I tried the appetizer sampler with aushak. Loved everything in the sampler and the yogurt sauces that come with it are simple but delicious. I also had Uzbeki Rice with Lamb Shank which was very flavorful and it had carrots and raisins in it. Lamb shank was cooked to perfection. Very tender and falling off the bone kinda meat. Personal preference: I think brown rice should look brown as well and dark brown taste the best. Uzbeki Palaow rice were brownish white. But no big deal. Loved everything I tried.
