Last night, I took myself out to one of my favorite restaurants, ARZO. I was not disappointed! I had an amazing dinner! My appetizers were Feta cheese, mint leaves and flatbread pieces and Mantoo, steamed dumplings filled with ground beef, onions, and spices, and topped with a homemade yogurt sauce and sautéed vegetables (not pictured). Next I enjoyed a delicious bowl of lentil soup (not pictured). My entrée which came with a beautiful salad was Kabuli Palow, a incredibly tender lamb shank marinated in a blend of spices, served with basmati rice topped with carrots, raisins and pistachios. For dessert, I had their amazing coconut cake and a cup of their delicious Chai Mana, tea made with fresh spearmint leaves (both not pictured). read more

This is our first time here and eating Afghan and we are so happy we did. It's a small but clean and appealing place. The service was fantastic. He was so polite and helpful. I'm not sure how this happened but Azro has become our post church lunch spot. For something rather exotic, it appeals to many people. Meat eaters - get the kabobs, veggie lovers - pumpkin and eggplant. There is even a kid's menu with chicken nuggets for those picky eaters. Somehow everyone finds something that satisfies them. We also go in around 11 am so the place is usually empty. However, at noon, this place gets packed! There is a comfortable lounge-y area and regular tables for people to sit at. I've never sat on the lounge for fear I will fall asleep after eating. Soon after we are seated, the owner will bring cubes of cheese, enormous mint leaves (where does he find these...?) and slices of pita. It is a tiny appetizer to get us going. We love the combination appetizer plate. I can't tell you what all the things are but everyone loves the dumplings stuffed with potatoes. I am partial to the green onion one. We also love, love the mandook (dumplings). The wrapper is incredibly soft and it is filled with tiny morsels of well seasoned meat. This is probably my favorite thing on the menu. One mandook tray will definitely fill you up. As for entrees, I love the combination kababs. You get to try a bit of everything. I like the beef and chicken most. I don't like the muskiness of lamb but several of my friends like it. All of these plates come with salad and rice. Try the kabuli rice. It is seasoned and has raisins and nuts. Generally, I have found the rice to always be well cooked. Other dishes I have tried include the chicken with chickpeas and the eggplant. The lamb shank is also incredibly popular with my friends who love shank. It is massive an you will feel quite full after consuming a plate of this. I have yet to try dessert (mainly because Malinalli's is next door). But I will probably be back again and again. read more

I planned a trip to SA partially just to try this restaurant, and it was well worth the trip. The food was fantastic - we had the Aushak as an appetizer, I had the lawangi morgh, and my husband had the quorma. Everything was tasty and the portions were huge! We could have shared a plate! The flavors were excellent. And oh m gosh, some of the best iced tea I've ever had. Maybe it was a lemon cardamom tea? The restaurant has a wonderful energy, too - it is decorated beautifully and there are lovely watercolors from Afghanistan on the wall. The owner was so kind and welcoming. I wasn't expecting to have Afghani for lunch, but somehow I walked into Azro. I'm being a little tough on the stars because the waiter was a little too busy and never refilled my water glass. I was thirsty, come on man, you got everyone else but me. The lunch special was more than I expected and I should have stuck to my usual dish when in a new restaurant, the gyro, but I went with the daily instead. It was a steak and rice combo with salad for $9.99. That seems like that was a fair price, especially for the size of it. If you're not familiar with Afghan cuisine, it's heavily spiced, but not HOT spicy. You will find everything on the menu extremely flavorful and mild, as is normal for this style of cuisine. The service was extraordinary in that our server was helpful, not shy to offer recommendations, and very attentive. He definitely made sure that we had a LOVELY meal. Somehow, the wonderful food we ordered came out VERY quickly but was timed well (I didn't get an appetizer with my meal at the same time). Our tea was refilled the minute it was empty. Our server also let us add mantoo to the appetizer sampler, which was perfect- I was going to order 2 appetizers because I just absolutely adore mantoo. Their mantoo is flavorful and honestly one of the best offerings of the dish I've ever had. Everything in the sampler AND our tea was served quickly and PIPING HOT. My husband had the combo kebab and I had the chicken lawangi morgh. The server made sure our food was laid out on the table so we could share and he picked out the best rice for each dish. The lamb (the only meat I tried from his combo) WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. My chicken morgh was lovely....after tasting the lamb kebab, I almost wish I ordered a lamb morgh. Came here a while back with my guy, we decided to stick to the lighter side and had an appetizer sample plate and grilled beef tenderloin kebabs. Appetizer plate comes with a variety of salads/veggie to share- including a really good white bean Tuscan salad and a beet salad with goat cheese. The beef tenderloin was good- made with quality meat, seasoned well and made for a filling, flavorful dish. Beef itself was served over rice, seasoned with dried fruit and nuts. I didn't care for the rice, though. Dish seemed to be missing the grilled vegetable side from the menu listing. Service was polite but difficult about giving recommendations, décor is more upscale than the restaurant service or cuisine. We were staying at a hotel near the San Antonio airport and were looking for a restaurant that did carry out. We found Azro on Yelp. We ordered the Bolanee as an appetizer. It is an Afghan version of an Empanada. As I have had the potato ones before, I decided to try the leek Bolanee. Also we ordered the Aushak, Afghan ravioli stuffed with leeks floating in a yoghurt sauce and with a layer of ground beef cooked in spices. The third dish was a chicken Quorma cooked in a garlic sauce with vegetables. As a rice dish we ordered the brown rice. The Bolanee was good, a little greasier than those I had before. The Aushak was superb! The chicken Quorma quite different than other Quormas we had before but it was very good. The brown rice was a true delight. It was cooked in cinnamon or all-spice, it was very different and delicious. We had the Afghan flat bread but with the portions being so large only ate one piece of the bread. read more

Ruh roh Azro. My first time trying Afghan cuisine - thought I'd make a slight detour from my Raj-ma-Taj Indian food tour. Definitely worth trying and I look forward to trying some more. Hit the Ramadan rush as I was a little behind schedule; was still seated and served relatively quickly. Started with chai and an app... Yogurt, mint & cucumbers with their flatbread very similar to Naan. Definitely a good portion for only one person - could not finish it nor the Naan before the combo plate arrived. The seasoning and cooking was exceptional... flavorful and no dry overcooked meats. And definitely opt for their "brown" rice. My understanding was it's rice mixed with the drippings or such. Regardless it was very flavorful on its own. Lastly had dessert. Couldn't decide on which one so I actually chose 2! Their version of baklava ( served in 2 wedges) and a milk custard (Ferni) with rose water and various nuts and spices. They were both very good. The prices are around $12 a plate but you're definitely getting an authentic experience so I'd say it's well worth it! My biggest problem with most mediterranean/Persian/afghan restaurants that serve kebabs is that the meat is almost always overcooked to the consistency of cardboard or rubber, making it hard to chew and devoid of flavor and juices. This place knows how to grill their kebabs right. Usually lamb is mostly easily screwed up at other restaurants, but even the lamb here was tender and juicy, which has happened ZERO times in my experience in SA. I have tried Jerusalem grill, turquoise grill, pashas, darna, Moroccan bites, zaytune and none of those places treat their grilled meats as well as Azros. Yes, the food is expensive, but if you've ever eaten at a Mediterranean restaurant then these prices aren't exactly jaw dropping because you should usually expect to pay around 11-15 per entree for this kind of food. FOOD: 1) Combination plate: $15 for combination of kabab-e-morgh (white meat chicken marinated with spices), kabab-e-gosfand (marinated lamb chunks),kabab-e-kofta (ground beef marinated with spices), and kabab-e-qaburgha (lamb chop). Comes with a side salad which is nothing impressive but, I mean, who cares about the salad anyways. I recommend the brown rice, it is cooked in a broth which adds so much flavor that you can probably just eat the rice by itself and be completely satisfied. The only thing I wish was different is more lamb chops! They only provide one for the combination plate but 2-3 pieces of all the other meats. I know lamb chops are expensive but for 15 bucks I think they can afford to put on two. All the meats were grilled to perfection, my favorites being the chicken and the lamb chop. 2) Quorma: $12 for the curry, rice, and side salad. The portion of curry was pretty small for the price, but the idea is really unique. I have grown up eating the Pakistani version of this which I absolutely love, and this was a great twist on that. It's not anything you could find at a typical Mediterranean/Persian restaurant. The Quorma and other food under the "Entree" section is unique to afghan cuisine and definitely worth trying. So don't play it safe, take a chance! Even if you hate it, at least you tried it. 3) Mast Wa Badrang: around $3.95 I believe under the appetizers section. This was the only thing that was kind of a let down. I usually love yogurt with cucumber and mint, it's something I order at Indian and Persian restaurants a lot. However, this didn't quite have the flavor I was expecting. I wish there was more mint and spices in the flavor profile, which would really kick it up a notch. Some lemon, cumin, and garlic would go a long way I think. The ambience and service are both great. Our server was polite and quick to make recommendations, which is always helpful! I almost ordered the white saffron rice, but he insisted that the brown rice tasted a lot better with the combination plate (same price) so I decided to trust him. He was definitely right and I was impressed that he made that extra effort. We sat on one of the tables but there's also carpeted floor seating to the side which was already taken. I love the concept of eating on the floor because I grew up doing it, so it's something I would recommend as part of the experience! read more

Came here for team lunch and I was the only vegetarian in the group . So called them up to confirm for vegetarian options and they confirmed that it was available . Many times we decided not to go here thinking that they may not have vegetarian entrées. There was a separate vegetarian section in their menu ( limited 3 options ), but frankly I didn't even expect that here. Also he explained the other entrées in the menu which they can make it vegetarian:) Food was very tasty I ordered Chalow Subzi -kidney beans cooked in spinach and tomato purée. They gave us the complementary two dressings / salsa - red and green spicy : careful with that both are really hot !!! ( I am an Indian who eats spicy food , still it was spicy to me) But I mixed the red dressing / salsa with the Subzi I ordered and it tasted very good ( brought the curry to my spicy level). The curry comes with a salad and rice , but you can opt for naan instead of rice .I was expecting them to have khuboos since they are afghan based, but I was very happy with the naan I got. They also served butter naan and feta with mint leaves as starter. Meat lovers in my group enjoyed thoroughly and they felt That the lamb they had was just tender and perfect ! Oh hot damn. This place was so effing good. The decor is super cute, the service was fast, friendly, and polite, and THE FOOD. I can't stop thinking about it. It's my new favorite affordable restaurant. We had the mantoo as an appetizer, which are steamed dumplings covered in tangy yogurt and garnished with peas and carrots. I know that doesn't sound that great, but I sincerely never knew peas and carrots could taste that great. The ground beef filling was mixed in with what tasted like toasted spices. Essentially, a warm hug in your mouth, which rounded out the flavor or the sauce and garnish. For our entrees, we enjoyed the lawangi morgh, chicken and chickpeas in yogurt sauce, and the Kabab-E-Qaburgha, grilled lamb chops served with grilled vegetables over rice. First of all, everything is cooked to perfection- tender meat, fluffy af mounds of rice (read -HUGE mounds of rice). Something about the Afghan spice makes everything smell warm and inviting. I really wish I knew what the spice blends they used were - clove? Maybe a little cinnamon? Definitely cardamom. Either way, just take me word for it. It's really good. Both dishes come with a tangy yogurt sauce, which again rounded out the warm, toasty flavors of the spice. For dessert we had the Gosh-E-Feel, a thin layer of pastry dough covered in sugar and pistachios, and mint tea, which was a sweet black tea with fresh mint leaves. WHAT TO ORDER: Quorma, Combination Kabab Plates I'm giving this place 5 stars because finally I found a restaurant in SA of this type with great quality meats! AMBIANCE: Upon entering the restaurant, you're hit with a strong but pleasant smell of essence - perfect into getting you into the whole culinary experience. There are plenty of tables and a limited seating area to the side where you can sit in the cushions and on the carpets to enjoy a meal in a more traditional style. Our waiter was also very friendly and gave us great recommendations on the food! FOOD: Every meal will come with a side of pita bread with mint leaves and cheese. Eat them all together - it's a delicious start! Growing up with a backyard of mint leaves, it's always been one of my favorite ingredients. I do wish they gave a little bit more though. ---APPETIZER: We ordered the MAST WA BADRANG which is a creamy homemade yogurt mixed with diced cucumbers and sprinkled with mint. This was my least favorite dish since the flavor profile seem to lean on just yogurt - not to mention, I really wish they gave more pita bread to eat with it. I do understand though that it is something you're supposed to eat with the entree meals. ---QUORMA WITH LAMB ($12): Absolutely delicious and a dish I highly recommend! It is a different dish you would never expect to find anywhere else so if you like being adventurous then this is the dish for you! The only downside is that the portion of quorma comes in a small bowl and seems disproportionate to the amount of basmati rice given. Don't be deceived though - if you have a small appetite like me then the whole dish actually fills you up, but I do wish they served more of the quorma since it was so delicious! First of all, I have to compliment the lamb since this is one of the hardest meats to cook right in my opinion, and the meat was delicious - not too overpowering and tender. The Quorma itself is a curry with onions, tomatoes, garlic, and afghan spices - every bite was incredibly flavorful! ---COMBINATION KABAB PLATE: I tried only the marinated chicken and was incredibly impressed. I've had the meat from Jerusalem Grill, Darna, Pasha, Turquoise Grill here in SA and have always found them to be mediocre and dry. BUT WOW - I had one bite of the chicken and it was absolutely amazing - so juicy and not the least bit dry. I will be coming back to order this dish for sure! PRICE: So upon looking at the menu, everything will be $10+ but don't be intimidated. You should expect to pay these kind of prices at these types of restaurants because of the meat.
