This place is the best bakery in San Diego and one of the best in the country. We go to them for cakes for all of our special occasions. The cakes are beautifully done, taste great, and are reasonably priced. The daily pastries are very good - relatives from out of town always ask to come here for the meat pies and cheese and guava pastries. Coffee is great. The sandwiches don't amaze me the same as the pastries but are still decent. Just writing a review makes me want to go there right now! read more

I recently discovered Azucar in my quest for a red velvet cupcake. I found them on Yelp, along with other cup cake places around San Diego. They have the best red velvet cupcakes and cafe con leche. So good, we went there 2 days in a row. It is about a ten minute drive for us, but well worth it. They have a great selection of treats, sandwiches and coffee. Everything was great here, especially the sweets! I ordered the dulce de leche macchiato...delicious! The Cuban sandwich was also really good and the brownie and cookies I took home were amazing. I planned my morning specifically to visit this cafe/bakery. Funny thing is that I've walked past this place several times and had never gone in. It wasn't until this past week that my coworker spoke of the delicious scones and the dulce de leche macchiato. Everything was delicious. I bought a guava and queso pastry for a morning snack, then ran it off, supposedly, to have a scone for later. I also bought another two scones to have for breakfast today and tomorrow, which means I'm going to have to run a lot more BUT well worth it. The only disappointing part was that I was actually expecting a latin person to be working the counter/register. I am half Panamanian and love guava and maybe I wanted to share that with someone other than myself. Definitely worth the visit but be prepared, you might have to wait a little. read more

I found this place thanks to Yelp.com. I went here yesterday after a walk around Pt Loma and OB. Thank goodness we had been walking because I am sure we consumed a ridiculous amount of calories from the oh so tasty pastry. Along with our breakfast pastry I had tea and my friend had a coffee leche. Both were delicious. So before my friend headed out of town, we hit this place up again for breakfast this morning. Just as we were walking in, a guy was putting some delicious coconut cake in the display case. We had to have it. I think it had guava and something else in it but I really don't recall. We also ordered the Cuban toast which was originally what I came in to eat. The toast is grilled with nutella spread in the middle of the bread. OMG! So yummy but nothing could beat that delicious cake. They also had some awesome looking key lime cupcakes but my waist line will have to wait another day to try those. Also they have Cuban sandwiches, but the lunch menu doesn't start until 11:00am so those will have to also wait for another day. Thanks Yelp, this was another great find! read more

No bueno. This venue is busted. Literally- the sign to their entrance is broken and shattered. So, not a very good first impression. Inside, the pastilles were uncovered, out on the counter with gnats flying around them. The cookies were busted looking, as well. There's a dusty floor and one busted table on it. Was a little disappointed by my experience, perhaps I was expecting a bit much, I am Cuban and just moved here from Miami a few months ago where there's a Cuban pastry shop on every corner. So when you get a little home sick and decide to drive an hour in San Diego rush hour traffic from San Marcos to try to get some authentic Cuban snack your sure to find yourself disappointed by this extremely Americanized version of a Cuban pastry joint, I do understand that perhaps since there's not many Cubans in the area you would try to appeal to a larger clientele by offering more common sweets and options but when 90% of your menu is America and the few truly Cuban options taste nothing at all like the real thing you should probably consider changing the genre of the place, I mean all in all the place seems like a nice pastry shop just don't come here expecting a taste of Cuba because you will be sorely disappointed. read more

I was so excited to try this place. I am half Cuban, so I love to support my community. First, I wanted to say that I don't like writing negative reviews. I work in the costumer service industry, and the one thing that goes a long way is being friendly to costumers. The lady that took my order was so rude, and to be honest the whole staff was not warming. I had to greet her with a smile and asked her how her day was doing. When I had asked her questions about certain items on the menu she was very short. I did not feel welcomed at all. I gave this place 3 stars mainly to do with their costumer service. The service made me not even enjoy my food, so I could not tell you if the food was good or not. I will not go back there again. I don't live in the city of OB, but every time I go I always have a good experience. The town is friendly as ever, it is too bad this place did not reflect on the rest of the community. read more

I thought I already scored when I moved to San Diego and then I found this place. I've been there five times and this last time I brought my Cuban friend with me. And it will be the last time I go. Growing up with Cuban food my entire life, I have a taste bud for authentic Cuban pastries. I order typical pastelitos, croquetas, and cafe con leche. I was so enthusiastic to show my friend this place. As soon as we arrived, the cashier Laura walked to the back. We waited and then she approached us. With no eye contact, she asked what we wanted. Exactly that, what do you want? Okkkk. I proceeded to order. She said there were no more cheese pasties and then after our order was complete, one of the staff brought out more. 1 ordered 7 croquettes and three were smashed that I couldn't eat them. No crackers either! My friend being the Cuban that he rightful is brought to my attention that she handled a rag, our cash, and food without changing gloves. She is ruthless! I've never seen someone hate there job so much. I about wanted to lose it at this point. He said, I don't want her to make my coffee because she can care less about this restaurant. He was right. Someone else came out and I asked her to make our coffees and the coffees were good. Authenticity is there but diminishing when food is served poorly. The hot sauce is a nice touch but that is a Cali thing. I am embarrassed to bring friends here. I hope Azúcar considers who they hire. Oddly enough Laura looked like the oldest staff member and the most immature in customer service, unpleasant, rude, inconsiderate, UNSANITARY and a bad look for this restaurant. Later in the evening I went to Havana Grill near La Jolla. Let me tell you, that place has it going on and the staff are all on point and all cared about the food and representation of the restaurant. They sell pastries with real smiles, try Havana Grill. I'll later write a review of my experience there. I hope Azúcar prioritizes customer service once more or people like Laura will tarnish this little Cuban presence in the sea of taquerias. read more

There is nothing I don't love about Azucar. The concept is great - Cuban flavors with a French patisserie presentation -- and the creations they come up with are unbelievably unique. A few of my many favorites include the raspberry scone with passionfruit icing, the guava and cream cheese pastries, the meat pies (only $1.50!), the key lime bars, the Turron de Havana chocolate-hazelnut cakes, and the Cinque Leches dessert. Hmmm! (I may be addicted.) The cakes make really great little gifts because they're exquisite, delicious and all around $6. You tend to get a lot for your money here. Plus, the staff are all super friendly and Vivian, the head pastry chef (who owns the shop with her husband), posts photos of her adorable baby girl. We even had them do the cupcakes for our wedding -- double chocolate and red velvet. I love supporting a local, small business that absolutely deserves all its success! read more

We just returned from San Diego where we discovered this great little gem of a place. It wasn't packed, but there was definitely steady traffic in and out of the place.The pastry case looked amazing with lots of unique options. I would have had one of everything if possible! I went with the Key Lime and white chocolate scone: hands down the best scone I have had in ages. The chocolate was subtle and the brightness of the key lime was the star. I also got a guava/cheese pastry to go. By far the best I have found outside of Miami. Hubby got a quiche that he really enjoyed and something else to go...can't remember what it was called (maybe a cheese roll?) and he liked that too. We both had a Cafe con leche. It was good and served promptly. My one "gripe" would be that it seemed to take awhile to heat up my hubby's quiche...I think the person on the register got distracted and no one else stepped up to the plate to take care of it. Someone else we spoke with said that she recently had one of their mini-cakes and they were amazing. We will definitely return on our next visit to San Diego. Great authentic Cuban coffee with leche. The cupcakes and pastries are very delicious and authentic as well. They have a wide variety of treats. The seating isn't the greatest but good enough to get by. I also sampled the Cubano sandwich and let me tell you it was the best I've had in a long time, maybe since my visit to Miami. This is as good as it gets on the west coast folks. The only downside I can see is that they don't offer Cuban bread since authentic Cuban bread is Made with Lard.....ahhhh we are in Cali people....what did you expect? Cuban cigars??? read more

The Cafe con Leche ($2.75) was wonderful. It is very close to what I am used to having in Miami. I tried the Artemisa Coconut cake ($5.75) which has a pineapple custard center and is covered with shaved coconut. I love coconut this dessert was enjoyable. Azucar is a wonderful,yummy place to explore. They have a vast selection of tasty treats to try. Pick a favorite, then pick a new favorite! The raspberry passion fruit scones are absolutely amazing, as are the pasteliltos (not sure I'm spelling this right). It's so nice to take some time to enjoy their coffee selection with their pastry selection. Azucar's desserts are also wonderful. Everything is made with quality ingredients and with a heart-felt passion for the food - you can see it, and taste it. Our family likes to bring home individual desserts for our birthdays, sharing the different pastry selections, trying new things. It also helps to avoid having a giant cake you can't or don't want to finish when the birthday is over. Their sandwiches and quiches are amazing! There's truly something for everyone here. If you need a bakery that has delicious cake, hassle-free ordering, and open on Sunday- this is the place! I actually found Azucar on Yelp, because I was looking for a bakery open on Sundays. Most bakeries are closed on that day, and if you needed a cake for Sunday you had to pick it up the day before and store it (not possible in a standard refrigerator if you're cake is huge! Right?). I contacted Vivian,chef/owner through e-mail and got a prompt response. I told her what kind of cake we had in mind for my daughter's 18th birthday, and we scheduled a taste test for the vanilla cake w/ passion fruit cream and strawberries. My daughter loved it! We went with that flavor for the first cake and for the second, the chocolate cake w/choc mousse and cocoa bean brittle. Both cakes were a hit! I think the thing that impressed me the most was that we spoke to Vivian, the chef/owner- the person who was actually going to bake and design the cake. At other bakeries, you meet the people taking orders and that personal touch is just not there...We're going back to AZUCAR for future cakes! read more

Perfect first trip to Azucar today. Drink menu is not huge, but they have the most common espresso drinks, including a dolce de leche macchiato, and I'm sure they can take requests. Soy mocha and iced white mocha were delicious. They also have almond milk. Mocha was made with delicious dark chocolate. The woman making it was very careful putting it together, making sure whipped cream was perfect, and the staff was all very friendly. Tried the Divina--white chocolate cake with raspberry and marshmallow-- and it was wonderful. The sweetness came from the fresh passion fruit custard and raspberries- the cake was not overly sweet. Not too heavy, not too light. Also tried the soup of the day-- cream of roasted red pepper-- which tasted very fresh and not overly creamy or heavy. It was bright red (not the light pink that happens when soup is mostly cream) and had texture, not completely homogenous. Very relaxed atmosphere, no rush, and great food and drinks. Came to check out their pastries. Husband had the guava cheese pastry and said it was okay. Not worth the price as he's had it before at a different bakery for a cheaper price and tastier. I tried their Divina dessert and it was actually delicious. A tad too sweet on the passion fruit and raspberry curd for my taste since their was enough sweetness on the white chocolate cake and marshmallow frosting. The white chocolate cake part of the dessert was moist. The whole presentation was visually appealing. Service we received was okay. The lady that helped us was 'stiff' for the lack of a better way to describe her. Or maybe she was just tired. Not once did she smile on our five minutes of stay there. The whole encounter didn't feel warm and welcoming. We're not from SD but we usually spend our summers here and like to try out food spots. The hazelnut dark chocolate Turron De Havana has 3 dimensional texture with right amount of crispness, gluiness and softness in a single bite. The sweetness is on point. I have been going to AZUCAR for several years after my wife and I got a taste for a CAFE CUBANO, or Cuban coffee after watching a food show. We googled Cuban coffee and found AZUCAR. Fortunately for us this place was just over in OB and we are in PB. The first two years were great, awesome coffee and the pastries and other desserts are awesome. We even started meeting friends there and taking our families when they came to town. Here's what's going on now.... The coffee continues to be good and so do the pastries, but, because of the service I think I'm done driving all the way over there. I had 3 back-to-back completely rude services. Last week when my folks were in town I thought "maybe I'll give it one more shot". No such luck. I didn't mention anything to my parents since they always liked it and when we left my mother said "wow, that girl was really rude to us!" This continues to be the pattern. I'm not sure if it is just a couple of the employees so I don't want to say the whole lot is bad. What I can say is that the two girls with dreadlocks act like they are doing a huge favor serving people and that makes me, and clearly my family uncomfortable and unfortunately we will not be going back. I always get the best CAFE CON LECHE at this most amazing place, however yesterday I decided to also get a cup of the Butternut Squash and Sage soup to go........they serve it in a coffee cup to go as well......driving in my car with both my coffee cups I decided to take a sip of the soup......oh my gosh!!!!!!! I'm a Starbucks junkie so imagine my own surprise when I found another cup of coffee to my liking! Azucar is a dream come true for Newport, because unless you want ice cream at the Lighthouse or stale M&Ms at the 99 Cent store, you can't find much else to satisfy a sweet tooth. (Speaking of, some lady asked me to recommend a nearby dessert place while I was standing outside Starbucks the other day. She had a brown tooth. I digress.) I love the iced coffee, which is only $2 and I'm not really sure if they charged me for flavor. Also delicious is the raspberry scone. I tried the little cheese breakfast thingy today which is also good. The most to-die-for-thing, however, is the sea salt chocolate, which sells for 50 cents a piece. Totally worth it. The cuban sandwiches were a bit too much flavor for me (I've tried two) although I am tempted to just ask for the plantain chips that come with it next time. Azucar is the place I go to when I want a GOOD coffee. They can't be beat in OB for their coffee! The little Shop is clean and bright and a great little spot. The peach champagne scone is my favorite thing there and the meat pies are delicious. My guy loved the Pain au Nutella, it's like a crossiant with Nutella in it. The one thing we don't love as much is the quiche, it is just a little too intense and doesn't reheat as well as the other things. The desserts always look beautiful and I love all the seasonal items they have. The only reason they only get 4 is because of the counter staff. I have only had one pleasant experience with one of the staff members. Every other time the staff are either rude, pretentious or screw up my order, sometimes all 3. They always seem annoyed to have to take anyone's orders, they have ZERO customer service skills. There is no "hi, how are you" or "thank you" or "have a nice day" or any other basic manners. I have even heard them snap and snicker at a sweet old lady that dared to ask if they had any more of a particular dessert in the back. They seem smug, like the customers are just lucky to be in the shop or they don't even bother listening to what you order. Last time I was there I ordered 5 premade pastries, not that complicated. I didn't bother checking the bag until I got home because how can you screw that up... I ended up with only 4 things in my bag and one of them was the wrong item. I find this really disappointing as it is such a lovely and wonderful cafe and bakery. You deserve better staff. I suggest either figuring out why they are miserable or have a staff training covering basic customer service principles. It would bring in more repeat customers and the staff would get more tips. I got my wedding cake here this past weekend and it was AMAZING!!!! I found Azucar online since I live in Los Angeles and was planning a Carlsbad wedding, and the experience was great. Vivian was very helpful and easy to get in touch with and the cake was most likely the best I've ever had (and I have a sweet tooth, so that's saying a lot). We got the lemon cake with a lemon curd and lemon cream cheese frosting. It was beautiful as well - a lovely fondant with a brown ribbon on the bottom of both tiers and two delicately placed flowers. I would highly recommend their wedding cakes to anyone! I never got a chance to taste what I was ordering because of the distance, and I was blown away by how tasty it was. Thanks Vivian! read more
