I've heard so much about this place and finally was able to walk in unexpectedly. I'll give them the fact that I came in 30 minutes before closing on Sunday but still the service was pretty bad. I waited at least 10 minutes for them to heat up my Cuban toast and butter biscuit. Funny thing is the biscuit was cold by the time the toast was ready. Neither of them were much good. I didn't try any of the sweets so I don't recommend staying away just because of my review but don't set your expectations high on the speed of service! read more

What a gem! Azucar is a Cuban style pastry shop and cafe with beautiful and delicious sweets and savory sandwiches. I had the guava and cheese pastry, warm out of the oven, kind of like a gourmet toaster strudel with the most unique guava filling. There were a variety of other Cuban pastries, as well as scones, cookies, cupcakes, and more American-style treats-- all looked amazing. My boyfriend got the Cubano sandwich with a side of plantain chips. It was the perfect pressed sandwich with pickles, ham, shredded pork, yellow mustard and cheese. We went to Miami and never found a Cuban this good! According to my bf, "The pork was so tender and the sandwich just melted in your mouth." Best Cuban we've had yet! Absolute BEST chocolate croissant ever. I've lived in OB for a while and haven't had the chance to check out Azucar until today and wow I've been missing out. I arrived at 7am when they opened & the pastries were all fresh and warm. The staff let me know that the pastry chefs arrive at 5am to make everything. I love a fresh croissant. You can definitely tell the difference when it is made fresh that day. Not stale at all. I plummeted from passionate to pissed off at Azucar after my recent visit. On my 1st visit I had fallen in love with the pistachio passion fruit macaroon. So on my 2nd visit I invited my mother and a cousin to lunch. My cousin and I ordered Cubano sandwiches for $7.50 each. Then I told the staff that my mother is gluten free, and could they just make her a salad and add either turkey or pork to the salad for my mom? The guy answered brusquely, "No, we can't do that." I stared at him, dumbfounded and silent. I felt we'd been verbally slapped. My mother felt awkward so she said she would just have a gluten free sweet for lunch. Really, Azucar? You have salad and turkey and pork on your menu, but you couldn't put them together so my mom could have a gluten free lunch?! I should have walked out and taken my mom and cousin somewhere else for lunch. We all felt awkward as we had already ordered the 2 Cubano sandwiches so we stayed. My poor mom had a gluten free dessert and Cuban coffee for lunch and nothing else!!! My cousin and I wouldn't order the Cubano sandwiches again. They had too much cheap yellow mustard (see photo), and not enough pork for $7.50. The spices didn't quite work together. I've had bigger and better Cubano sandwiches elsewhere for LESS money! I spent a bundle since we tried a variety of sweets as well as Cuban coffees and the 2 Cubano sandwiches. And yet when I asked for sauce for my Cubano they said no, it only comes with the plantain chips! Then they said they would have to charge me. For a teaspoon of the sauce which came for free with my cousin's Cubano & plantain chips. Since I ordered my Cubano with salad instead of plantain chips, mine didn't come with the free sauce for some reason. This is nonsense. When a returning customer brings you 2 new customers and buys lunches, Cuban coffees, and several sweets, you don't need to act stingy with a squirt of sauce. YOU CLEANED THE GLASS INSIDE THE PASTRY CASE WHILE THE PASTRIES WERE STILL INSIDE THE CASE! Why would you do this? We watched you do it. You thereby exposed the pastries to possible contamination. We had already eaten our pastries by then, unfortunately. )-; If we had known this is how you clean, we wouldn't have ordered any pastries. There were 3 of us on my recent visit, and we didn't feel too welcome, even though there were very few customers. I went out of my way to come here, but ended up apologizing to my mom and cousin for putting them through this! The staff of 2 mentioned a couple times that the owner wasn't there during our visit. I got the impression that the staff aren't allowed to make decisions without the owner. But this can be frustrating to the staff and to customers. I love this bakery. Been here a few times but my boss lives down the street and will sometimes bring in some goodies. I have tried their Cuban sandwich, brownies, mojito cookies, guava cheese rolls, regular cheese rolls and salted toffee oatmeal cookies. I've been to Porto's in LA and Azucar's cheese rolls are comparable, maybe even better. Their salted toffee oatmeal cookies are addicting. I love the contrast of the salt on top with the sweetness of the toffee chips. I'm sure they spring crack on there too because it is THAT addicting. I like eating dessert and to find a place that specializes in Cuban pastries, I had to give it a try. It's in Ocean Beach, a part of town that I don't venture out to much, but glad I did yesterday afternoon since it was such a beautiful day out. The decor of this shop is cute, I like the spring lime colors, the plasma TV menus on the wall and the glass display that has all the dessert for you to drool over. We shared the Artemisa, a coconut cake with chunks of pineapple, Malibu Rum custard, sweet cream all wrapped in coconut shavings. Oh yeah, we also had the Champagne with chocolate and two iced coffees all for sixteen bucks. It hit the spot, I enjoyed the Artemisa, it wasn't too sweet, I took bites between the chocolate dessert, which was a lot more dense and sweeter. The iced coffee was refreshing and kept me cracked out the remainder of the afternoon. They do need to improve on the cleanliness of their bathroom though. When I went in there, they ran out of toilet paper and when I was in the middle of taking care of business, the lights shut off in the windowless bathroom! Yeah, I found it comical after I found my way to the light switch next to the door, but how was I supposed to know it was on a timer when it was already on when I got in there? After reading Meagan D's review, I decided to try this place out when an out of town friend wanted to hang out down in OB. Since it was a holiday, their hours were limited. I went to the website and we were intrigued by the pictures of the pastries and desserts. So after having fish tacos at South Beach Bar and Grill, we made our way up to this place. It was empty and we thought they had closed earlier because of the holiday. The glass cases were stocked with the most interesting sweet things. I ordered an Artemisa - Cuban rum cake, malibu coconut custard, rum flamed pineapple, topped with coconut and dried pineapple chips and a flaky guava pastry...I couldn't help myself, if I can't be in Hawaii then I'll fake it, even though this place is Cuban....and a cappuccino. The partner had the key lime tart, and Deb had a chocolate chip cookie. We thought everything was pretty damn tasty. This is a sugar addict's dream! Some of the choices are a lot more interesting than Heaven Sent or Extraordinary. I would definitely make my way out to OB for this place. In spite of some of the crazies, this place is worth it. After we ordered, we sat outside in front, and people just started coming out of the woodwork. The place was crowded by the time we left. Chocolate hazelnut crunch - This was not on the menu at the time, when I was there they were only open for about three full days. I think they noticed how stupidly happy all of these desserts made me, and someone from the kitchen brought out a small tasting of this dish. The chocolate on top was smooth, velvety and rich, but it was also infused with the nuttiness of hazelnuts. What I enjoyed about this was the wafer crisp on the bottom, which was chocolaty, crispy rice and also had a bit of a nuttiness to it. Two layers, each with its own unique flavors and textures, together made for an excellent dish. I ended up buying one of these to go and consumed this later in my room. It didn't have a name, at the time, but judging from the responses and description on the website I think it is now called a Turron de Havana. Seriously this thing is dangerous, I had asked if they would be willing to ship it to me priority overnight in the bay if I bought one... They can't yet, but I guess it means I had better come back soon and fix this addictive craving! read more

So I just finished my second piece of Cuban Rum Cake from Azucar. I have another piece saved for later. I had one yesterday too. Ok, that's a lie. I had two yesterday, but who's counting.... It's soooo good. I ordered the Cuban Rum Cake with Dulce De Leche filling and Coconut Cream Cheese frosting for my boss yesterday. I should've ordered it for myself, considering I ate the majority of it. Of course while I picked up the cake, I HAD to order the guava pastry, the guava and cheese pastry, the raspberry scone with passion fruit filling, AND a ham croquette for the road. The cake was $38, and then with all my goodies, the total came out to $41. Not bad at all. Definitely stop here if you get a chance. While it is bright and cheery, I have not had a chance to sit and enjoy a leisurely coffee. I will try to make that (plus a sandwich) my next visit. My first encounter with Azucar came as a very nice surprise at the office. Someone brought me a delicious raspberry scone with passion fruit icing last year and since that first bite (I can't reminisce without my mouth watering..)... I have had this place on my radar. I'd stalk the Yelp photos and covet all the delicious looking treats - waiting for the day I would be in the neighborhood. How fortuitous that a few months later my new eye doctor would be located next door to Azucar. I tried a small variety of pastries, all of which were good. CRAYNUTS Mondays 12 NOON Cronuts make people crazy and Azucar's CRAYnut support this food trend. As a lover of sweets, donuts, and carbs I had to make this fabled croissant-doughnut lovechild mine. Came in Monday for lunch around 12:30 PM & there were exactly 6 craynuts left after a guy swooped in before me & bought 6 to go. I was surprised to see that in addition to the green glazed craynut there was a chocolate variety so I naturally couldn't pick & got both. (Oops!) ****Food: Ordered the Cubano pressed sandwich ($7-8) (pork/ham, cheese, pickles), a coconut craynut ($4), & a chocolate craynut ($4). The sandwich was served with a mixed green salad which helped balance the saltiness of the sandwich. The sandwich was good but if I were to order it again I would probably take out the pickles bc I'm not a huge pickle person. The craynuts were both covered with cinnamon sugar, yummy, & had an element of surprise in each. The coconut craynut had a light custard inside & was topped with their mojito glaze & toasted coconut. The chocolate was my unexpected favorite because of the chocolate custard inside that I could probably eat alone. *****Service: The service was quick and friendly.
