Late night ice cream craving led us here during our trip to SD. Was super happy they were still open when many other places were already closed. So we braved the one-way downtown streets and dodged paid parking lots, thankfully found a free parking space, and walked as fast as we could to Figaro, just in time. Our efforts paid off. We rewarded ourselves with delicious gelato - Chai, Tiramisu, Nutella, Peanut Butter. All great and yummy flavors. I also got me a Brownie Cheesecake - it was good, although a bit dense and firm. I would've liked it a little better if it were softer. They have so many cute and colorful dessert choices. Wish I could have tried more but it was almost 11PM, I didn't want to eat too much sweets. We were helped very quickly, and the line was not very long. in fact, we took longer to decide what we even wanted than it did to get to the front. My friend got the mixed berry, vanilla cake, I got the Oreo cheesecake, and we split the red velvet marquise the mixed, very vanilla cake was phenomenal, same with the Oreo. I've also tried the red velvet cake which is really good. The treats can be pricey but they are so pretty and different- definitely a splurge every once and awhile. Sometimes dessert is a work of art, sometimes it's just something yummy to satisfy a sweet tooth. This visit proved to be more on the artistic side than just sweet. Everything in the display case is absolutely beautiful and I wish I had time and physical capacity to try them all. But alas, I have my limits and had to stick with what I came for-the crepe. The nice man behind the counter whipped up a couple of delicious crepes for us-I had the banana, strawberry and Nutella and my wife had a cheesecake something or other. Very cute speciality dessert spot in North Park with tons of adorable little treats, cake slices and gelato as well. I was ordering for a group and got a bunch of different options, including the Pumpkin, Apple tart, Mango Cheesecake, and Lemon. My personal pick was the classic "Cheesecake" that was shaped like a piece of cheese - So cute! There are a couple seats inside and a little patio out front. Parking is hard to find but that's typical for North Park. Only downside was that there was only 1 person working so service was a little slow. There was only 1 party ahead of me and in total I waited about 20 minutes from the time I walked in to the time I walked out. I scream. you scream, we all scream... for gelato! I prefer gelato over ice cream any day. The owner waited on us. He was patient letting us try a few samples. The guy before us took his time and ended up not getting any and the owner was totally chill. We each ordered a scoop and truly enjoyed out experience. I choose the Tiramiso cake for $47. Brought it home and put in the refrigerator for the next days event. It was never told to me that the "cake" was actually a frozen Gelato dessert so by the morning it had melted inside my fridge. So now I'm dessert-less and out $47 for an ice cream cake and looking elsewhere for a substitute for my event last minute. They neglected to convey the proper information or label the product, about the type of "cake" they had available since all the cake they sell by the slice is actual cake not Gelato. And no other actual "cake"s were available at that time. read more

We walked to Figaro Dessert Cafe after having dinner at an Italian restaurant further south on Fifth Ave in Hillcrest. The map was wrongly guiding us toward the North Park shop which also happened to be on University Ave. I have actually come to this location before when the business was known for "munchies." The space has been nicely upgraded with a modern look compared to a Bohemian theme previously. The menu board on the wall behind the service counter was gigantic. I don't recall seeing a bakery or dessert place list every single item and its price like how they did here. It was rather overwhelming to study the board because of how extensive it was. Plenty of products, including gelato, were on display in glass cases surrounding the counter. We took a seat at one of the few tables inside after ordering slices of the Tiramisu and Mango Cake which was my choice. I ate the Mango Cake first before sampling the Tiramisu since the latter had a sweeter flavor profile. Two blackberries and three blueberries adorned the top of the multilayer fruity cake. The mango topping was smooth and neither tart nor too sweet. The coffee tone in the Tiramisu was rather subtle. Ladyfingers decorated the decorated the edge while large chocolate flakes topped the dessert. These two items each cost just under $10 so they were not cheap, however the quality was very good. read more
