While enjoying another beautiful San Diego Saturday in Pacific Beach with the family we decided we needed to get away from the crowds and find a little afternoon treat. After a quick check on yelp, I saw that Azucar wasn't too far out of the way and had recently been recommended by a friend. We made the short ride down the congested coast and were able to find parking within a reasonable distance...not always an easy feat in OB. Azucar is a nice little shop on the corner of Sunset Cliffs and Newport. It has a nice style to it and a tempting case full of delectable desserts. I contemplated the Senor Peanut; salted peanut caramel, cookie crust, peanut butter mouse and bittersweet ganache; but opted for the Banofee Cheesecake instead. This one was banana cheesecake topped with caramel and almond toffee bits on a vanilla shortbread cookie. It was on the smaller side given its $6.00 price tag, but not being incredibly hungry or feeling the need to devour 500 unnecessary calories, the wife and I decided to share. The kids opted for a dog shaped cookie and a brownie. After adding a bottle of water, it came out to just over $11. The cheesecake was quite good and is definitely something different than you will find at one of the many cupcake shops around town. The price might be a little on the high side for what you get, but won't break the bank either. Next time I'm in the area and looking for a little caloric splurge, I'll probably stop by to see what other tempting treats I see peaking out of the case, but probably won't be driving across town to fill a craving any time soon. read more

Scrumptious! I absolutely looove this place. Today was the first time I went there, and I was not at all disappointed. I ordered a couple of things: Turron de Havana (Hazelnut praline crunch, milk chocolate mousse - chocolate hazelnut glaze, and choco puffs), The red velvet cupcake, and the mojito sugar cookie, along with a peach iced tea. I ate the Turron de Havana right away because it looked way to good not to eat, and I saved the cookie and cupcake for later so I took it to go. The dessert, was amazing I wish I had endless amounts of it. And even later in the day after dinner, I tried the cupcake and it was moist and delicious. I split the cookie with my brother and he enjoyed it as much as I did especially because it was different than other flavors. All in all, this place is great. I usually get their brie/ginger sandwich, but I finally tried their España sandwich (potato omelet with manchego cheese on amazing bread) and it was incredible. Cutest dessert shop around! I split one of the leche cakes with my mom and we fell in love with it's richness and flavor! You can definitely tell that these desserts are made with love. I've been here a few times. I love the options. Every staff member is good at knowing ingredients and check for everything in case of allergens. They have everything for every taste bud. My favorite was the carrot cake with no nuts! They have some good cheese pastries but get there early bc they sell out sometimes. Nigiri Plate is a great option which includes Chef's Choice if premium nigiri , spicy tuna or salmon roll and miso soup. Our favorite specialty rolls are R U Kidding Me, Stardust and By the Border. We needed to kill time waiting for Newport Optometry to finish my husband's glasses and found Azucar next door. You walk in and there is lively music playing and fresh decor. You immediately see a case of very beautiful "fancy" desserts which catch your eye immediately. On the other side you see pastries and breads which are great companions for tea or coffee. My husband ordered a cafe con leche and loved it! We also ordered a honey almond bun and a pastry with guava and cheese. The pastries were great, I would definitely come back to try more. I went in today to purchase a few treats for my boyfriend, to surprise him Valentines morning by leaving some pretty confections on the counter with a loving card. Since I was there so early- 7:05 AM (and I plan on giving him the treats the next morning), I asked the cashier if everything in the bakery was fresh, cooked today. She said yes. I picked out a few cookies, then I got to picking out the strawberry meringue which I saw a week ago on the news channel on tv. As I looked at the cakes and asked about them, she said that they are no more than a day or 2 old. So she was not correct when she told me that they are all fresh baked today the first time. I left really confused how fresh the products I bought are. I explained that my boyfriend loves butter cookies, so I asked which are made of butter or have the most butter in them. She said all of them have some butter, I pursued further because I really wanted maximum butter. She only said that she could ask someone... I said that's ok, I was in a hurry. But that seems like information that she should be able to tell me. I was disappointed in the misinformation and lack of knowledge, but everything looks incredibly pretty. I am dying to go back to try the Espana and Cubano sandwiches with my boyfriend, and have a treat afterwards. The food looks so good that we might make frequent visits. I will update this review after our taste tests. I really want to love this place and rate it higher, just can't right now after feeling I was misinformed this morning. read more

So, for all my LA County foodies, you've prolly eaten a guava cheese pastry from Porto's or have heard of them, since that's what they're known for. Well I finally tried this place & have been dying to eat their guava cheese pastry & I must say, for the record, Azucar is so much better! The pastry is much flakier, their cheese filling is much creamier and there is more of it. I feel like the last couple of times I've eaten one from Porto's, they were skimping in the cream cheese filling. Maybe due to the mass production of them pastries. Anyways, so my review is only based on their guava cheese pastry. I first only ordered one & after I ate it, I went back in & bought 4 more to go. It's that good!! They have a guava only version too. The cafe is small & quaint and the display of delicious deserts looked very yummy. I'm just so excited that I don't have to trek up to LA & wait in the massive line at any Porto's anymore for these babies. read more

Delicious baked goods! There was a line for as they opened, but they have quick service and the line went very quickly. Everything was very good, but my favorite are the salted toffee oatmeal cookies! I was very pleasantly surprised with the desserts here. I didn't think I would like it, truthfully! The teeny cakes, pistachio macarons, and mousses were all very scrumptious. They're a little on the pricey side, but seriously, most independent baked goods usually are (and I'll pay the extra $$ if it means not eating a stale muffin from Starbucks). Who would've guessed that a Cuban patisserie would be so good?? I really wanted to come here for one of my Birthday lunches because I saw photos of their desserts lol. I had the Cuban pressed sandwich with plantain chips. That was really good and filling. The chips were ok though. I also tried their Cuban root beer- for some reason it tasted like alcohol lol...For dessert, I was able to choose two things- so i got the divina and mojito cookie. I had no idea what the cookie would taste like- nothing like the drink...but really tasty. We had to wait for them to bake some more since they ran out of them. It was definitely worth it! Delicious Cuban patisserie. Pros: Their food is consistent, high quality, delicious, unique and memorable. Usually pretty easy to get a parking spot. And their hit sauce is my favorite in the county; try it with the cheese roll. Cons: Service could be a bit faster. Sometimes I'll wait five minutes sometimes twenty five to order my food. I highly recommend the dulce de leche iced macchiato (be sure to mix it before drinking) and pretty much any of their pastries (we bought ham croquettes, meat pies and their potato balls).
