Visiting Houston to celebrate my mother in law's birthday and decided to have a beautiful dinner at Azumi. The location is prime, right in the heart of the River Oaks Galleria luxury mall. We had a reservation which made things go smooth for us. We were seated and immediately helped by the staff. All the staff was friendly and communicative . For example, we got some sushi for appetizers and the sushi came before our drinks so our server didn't fail to inform us that the bartender was backed up. Due to the fact that she communicated, we were not even bothered by it. Now let's talk about the drinks in question. We had a couple alcoholic drinks as well as the two non alcoholic drinks on the menu. The cucumber non alcoholic one was fantastic! The other one was missing something as it felt very dry. The alcoholic ones were good, no complaints there. As previously mentioned, we started with sushi as appetizers and we tried 3 of their rolls. We tried the San Roll, Tuna Tataki Roll and Spider Roll. The whole table collectively agreed that the Tuna Tataki Roll was the best. Flavor, consistency and presentation it was just the star roll for the table. I will return just for this roll single-handedly. Now for the mains: 1. My sister in law started with the Wagyu Yakisoba; noodles and meat, nothing to complain about but also nothing special. She wanted something classic and simple and that's exactly what the Yakisoba delivered. 2.My mother in law tried the giant prawn; Beautiful presentation. After the first bite she was hit by a multitude of flavors and aromas that took her by suprise in the best way. She said it tasted divine and the combinations of flavors are well thought and put together. 3. My father in law tried the branzino (no picture attached as that shot didn't come out properly) ; I recommended the branzino as you can never go wrong with it anywhere you go and he was so happy I did. Cooked to perfection with an amalgam of flavours and sauces that just took it to the next level. He was really impressed with the quality of the fish. 4. My partner had the lamb chops; Now most of the plates have a decent amount of food in them while the lamb chops just felt like an appetizer, not a main. For a big man, he basically inhaled the lamb chops before we even dug our forks into the rest. Wish there was at least 3 or 4 on the plate. Taste wise they were divine hence why we are asking for more lol. 5. Now last but not least, my plate was the Surf and Turf Cortado; Beautiful presentation with half a lobster and steak on the bottom. The lobster was just lobster but the steak stole the show for me. I shared a piece with my whole table and everyone agreed it's probably one of the best steak bites they've ever had. It was melting in my mouth and the sauce on the bottom just complemented both the lobster and the steak in a grand way. Collectively we all agreed that the spices and sauces are really what put Azumi on the Top 10 places we've eaten for the whole family. The chefs have found the best way to cook and complement fairly simple ingredients. In the end; my mother in law was also brought a birthday dessert which was so nice! Almost a five but the management was a five star class act for sure. Granted some of my party were tough customers with opinions and not used to the fact that Japanese restaurants tend to serve stuff when it's ready and not generally in any order. Oh well. Food was delicious. The sides and apps were decent size but mains were more "small plates" size. When some of our group wasn't happy, the manager worked super super hard to please and make things right and remained professional and smiling. Dessert on the house wasn't necessary but so delicious! Literally the best sushi I've had outside of Japan! So fresh and full of flavor. I went on a Sunday during lunch time and had one of their specials. I literally loved it! My friend and I decided to stop by for a late night bite since Azumi closes at 12AM. The design of this restaurant is beautiful all around, inside and out. We were greeted by their lovely staff at the host stand. Service was great, managers and staff members constantly checking up on our table. Onto the food, the Shima Aji nigiri and the Flounder Crudo were the only memorable items. For the sushi, you're only allowed to order by nigiris in pairs. Which is odd, since usually the cheaper restaurants do that. I wanted to order the Kamatoro which was $44, however my friend didn't. So customers can't order 1 piece but can order 3? Seems like they just wanted to make a sale off 2 pieces minimum. All of the nigiris were dress very well though. Extremely overpriced. They added a cake cutting fee and facility fee, which was not communicated when we sat down. When we ask them to clarify why and what these fees were...it made us more confused. They will add a cake cutting fee if the staff had to cut our friend's birthday that she brought...luckily our friend cut the cake to avoid us having to pay $5 for the cake fee. They added a facility fee, which is only written on the lunch side of the menu. When we asked for clarification what that fee was about, they were silent. It's really greedy of people to add these ridiculous fee. read more

Came for happy hour plus their $2 martini thursdays. We sat outside, and even though they do have fans, it was still incredibly hot, but that's just what you get in Houston summer. Along with the lychee martinis, we tried the spicy tuna crispy rice, brussel sprouts, sake maki roll, and calamari. The brussel sprouts were a good little sharing portion. I'm not sure if they made the maki roll 6 pieces because we were a table of 3 or if that's just the standard piece number it comes with. The calamari was a smaller portion than expected considering it was in the $8 section. Overall though the food was yummy. Some of the happy hour prices aren't that great (namely $4 per nigiri piece and $4 for miso soup which we didn't get because of those prices), but it's still a nice time to try their food/drink and enjoy the vibe of a pretty fancy restaurant. Additionally service was a little slow sometimes in terms of our server coming to get our orders, but they were pretty busy at the time so it's not a huge deal. read more

We went here for valentine's day and the restaurant was ok but our server was great. They had a set valentine's day menu that was $85 per person which seemed like a good deal. It came with an appetizer (that i didn't get a picture of), a selection of 5 pieces of sushi chosen by the chef, an entree (we chose the cod and the teriyaki steak), and desert. If we came back we would probs skip this and just do the sushi. The appetizers and the cod entree in particular were kind of bland and really the star of the show was the sushi. The food was really high quality, but I think bc of how many people were in there it took a while to get each of our meals out to us. Expect to spend quite a bit at the restaurant, most pieces of sushi sat at around 8-15 a piece. The ambiance of the restaurant was ok. I would have liked it more if they weren't playing very loud dj-esque house music during our meal which was imo a bad decision for a valentine's day dinner. Decor was a beautiful mix of modern decor and traditional Japanese decor. Absolutely enjoyed our Valentine's dinner! First of all, our server was amazing. I forgot her name, I think it was Mo or Noelle. It was one of those, I remembered at the time but can't recount. Now for what ya'll are really wanting to know about. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS! Everything we ordered tasted great and we would order again especially the Surf n Turf roll. The sushi chefs handled and cut it all well. You can tell by how they looked they had precision which is very important when it comes to this type of dining. Drinks were tasty, some were a little strong but for us that's how we like our drinks so no complains but for some that are a bit more sensitive, just a forewarning. Vibes and design of the restaurant was well done. I absolutely enjoyed the aesthetics in the restaurant. It was altogether cohesive with the plating of food, vibes and I can tell the type of atmosphere the owner was trying to deliver. It was sophisticated! The only thing I would note that was a bad experience was the hostess. I think they (probably the head hostess) could take note on delegation of responsibilities. They had two iPads and 3-4 other hostesses that night but only one person was checking people in, figuring out where to sit guests and taking guests information down. Which made waiting long (just to check-in) and eventually got crowded in the lobby since a ton of couples started lining up. They could have at least one of them start checking in other guests even if that means they tell us "I have you checked-in, please give us a moment as we check on your table." I totally understand the head hostess wants to be completely in charge so it won't create an issue when there are too many people start sitting and gets confusing. From my experience it tends to happen but would advise to trust your colleagues to help in some way instead of taking all the responsibilities. We didn't even get greeted until after we were already there for 10 minutes. Just remember the hostess is the first impression of the restaurant and can easily affect the experience of the guest. Stopped in for a new years eve dinner after visiting the iPIC and were pleasantly surprised. The service was friendly and the manager stopped by to check in as well. We tried a yellowtail serrano crudo, a couple of rolls and pieces, miso soup, and a beautiful unfiltered sake. All of these were great and would order again. We had hoped to try some less extravagant rolls but they were removed for new years. The restaurant is very pretty, very hip. Lots of young money customers. There was a live DJ spinning some great music, although a little loud. It's a little pricey but with the area, I feel like they could've charged more. I'd recommend the Lychee Martini, the calamari and the spicy tuna crispy rice. For appetizers, the chicken dumplings are good and straight to the point. For an entree, the cod was probably one of the best i've had and the wagyu fried rice was chef's kiss. As for the sushi? I'd try the flaming king crab roll. Service was extremely slow--we waited close to 30 minutes before anyone even brought out our first drinks. A couple of my friends came specifically for the $2 lychee martinis that were being promoted, but by 7pm they were already out, which was disappointing given it was still early in the evening. On the food side, the appetizers were solid. I had the chicken gyoza, and the tuna crispy shrimp --no complaints there. For sushi, I got the yellowtail roll which was just okay, but I did try the tuna roll and spider roll and those were definitely better.
