We were immediately seated and greeted warmly with a bottle of cold water. They were good about checking to see if we were ready to order with reminders that their daily happy hour was ending at 6pm. We ordered the oysters, grilled oysters, chicken wings, nigiri, spicy edamame, and gyoza. Everything came out great. They were, however, not the best so I would not want to pay full price. My favorites were the chicken wings with its super crispy skin and sweet but savory sauce, and the oysters you can't go wrong with. I also got the lychee martini which was decently strong. Azumi is such a great place for a romantic night out. The ambiance is beautiful- intimate, warm, and perfect for date night. My boyfriend and I decided to try the omakase for dinner, and we loved every single item that came out. Each course was absolutely delicious and presentation was exquisite. The service was just as impressive. Every server was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable without being overwhelming. To top it all off, we were treated to complimentary sake at the end of our meal, which was such a nice touch and tasted amazing. My friend and I went to Azumi for happy hour on a Thursday, and overall it was a chill vibe especially if you are going for drinks. They offer happy hour daily from 3-6 PM, and on Thursdays they have $2 martinis from 3 PM to close, which is honestly such a steal. We had the lychee martinis and they were SO good, easily the highlight of the night. I would absolutely go back just for those. A small heads up: it does get crowded, so the earlier you arrive, the better. When we got there, they had actually run out of menus, so we borrowed one from our neighbor until they were able to bring us our own. It was not a huge deal, but definitely a sign that happy hour brings in a crowd. They also mentioned they were running behind at the bar. The happy hour menu is on the smaller side, but the portions are fair for the price. We tried the chicken gyoza, Brussels sprouts, chicken wings, crispy rice, and the crunchy salmon roll. Everything was solid and tasty. The Brussels a d Gyoza were like favorites! I would not recommend going during happy hour if you are starving and looking for a full dinner. I don't know how I was sleeping on the HH here. Definitely fills up on the patio- no reservations for HH so try to get there early. They do a special in thursdays with the martinis which apparently gets real packed. Good deals and options on the hH menu- and of course you have to get the lychee martini! Ya know no. This place is located in highland Village and they share valet eith like 3 other restaurants. I dont like to use the valet service because they literally park your car im a dirt lot. Like what am I paying for?? We had a reservation for 7. It took 10 mins to seat us... our waitress was pleasant but lordddd was she slow. I just want to say WOW about azumi. We went here for happy hour on one of my last nights in Houston. We were just so impressed with the service, the ambiance, and the quality of the food. For happy hour you're truly getting a bang for your buck with their food and drinks. We chose to enjoy their oysters (fresh and Rockefeller), nigiri, spicy tuna crispy rice, spicy tuna roll, and the flaming king crab roll. The best thing was the spicy tuna maki and the crispy rice! So flavorful and fresh! The king crab roll was the only underwhelming item... for the price I don't think it's worth it. For drinks I enjoyed a lychee martini which was delicious! My husband got some whiskey on the rocks but they put something carbonated in it and when he asked, they said that's how they do on the rocks so we're not sure what was going on. I've been hearing sooo much about Azumi's HH from 3-6, but specifically the $2 lychee martinis on Thursdays. I'm sooo happy I visited because it didn't disappoint. The ambiance of the restaurant and patio is very inviting and warm. We arrived at 5pm and it was an hour and a half wait so definitely be there before 3. We were still granted the HH for drinks but not food, which was odd. I ordered the drinks which has a max of 4 for the HH special. They are on point! For food, we ordered mainly starters such as the oysters trio (10/10), Brussels (8/10 because they're flaky vs cut in half), shishito peppers (10/10) and the yellowtail tuna roll (7/10 because it was too much avocado). They're happy hour is not better at all and they have a few options to go off of this. Shrimp was amazing. I came on Thursday night. They're known for their $2 lychee martinis on Thursdays. I don't like the flavor of lychee lol so I skipped those and got a whiskey sour with an egg white. It was well balanced and tasty. We tried the Brussels sprouts, oyster trio and a hamachi sushi roll. The brisket sprouts were terribly greasy. Rather than whole or even halved it seemed they pulled the leaves off one by one Md fried them and then drenched them in suave. Skip this. The oyster trio came pre dressed and the flavors weren't my cup of tea so I'd prefer thy were plain but the oysters themselves were good and played beautifully with dry ice. The sushi was my favorite. We sat at the bar so bartender was our server. She wasn't very attentive and it took a lot to get her attention for everything we needed even when she wasn't busy making drinks. The ambience of the place is great. The flavor was good and they were well roasted, but there were barely any full brussels sprouts. It was mainly just the leaves. (5.5/10) The crispy calamari was not crispy sadly, and a bit bland. The sauce was a spicy mayo that helped the dish, but I would not get this again. (4/10) The hamachi maki roll was nice! The fish was fresh and I felt like it was very comparable to other hamachi rolls that I've had before. (7/10) The chicken wings had great flavor. My only complaint was they they were not crispy at all. The meat was tender though and overall a decent wing. (6/10) The lychee martinis were STRONG. My boyfriend made a reservation for this place for my birthday a couple weeks ago. Parking was easy. You can do valet right out front, or park for free in the garage behind the restaurant which is just a very short walk away. We came at around 7 pm and were promptly seated. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant which was nice because we were able to enjoy the music while still being able to talk. After sitting down we were not greeted for about 15-20 minutes. After this we had a waitress approach to let us know our server would be right with us. We didnt see anyone for 15 minutes after, so we flagged down the manager who was very apologetic and took our drink and appetizer order immediately. We started off with lychee martinis and an order of shishito peppers and brussels sprouts. This is my go to at any sushi restaurant. I like to start off with greens. Both dishes were great! We were fighting over the last shishito peppers on the plate LOL. After this our waiter finally came to our table and apologized sincerely. Its important to note that after his apology we received great service and he really tried to make up for it, and we really appreciated that. We shared a lot of dishes here but here are the ones that stood out for good and bad reasons: Spicy Yellowtail roll (3/5) - it was 70% avocado. Dont skimp out on the fish yall. Azumi roll - super fresh and flavorful. My favorite roll of the night. Kanpachi and hamachi pieces - very disappointed in these since I love yellowtail, but they had no flavor aside from the garnish on top. Chicken Kushiyaki - Ok so I normally would not order chicken at a sushi restaurant, but my boyfriend insisted on getting this and wow I am so glad. A nice crisp on the outside but tender on the inside on an aji amarillo sauce that was amazing. Get the chicken! They brought out a little dessert brownie for my birthday and it was very cute. Located on the westheimer facing side of the River Oaks District, the premium location is paired with a premium feeling experience. You can park in the garage if you're in the mood for a light walk before or after, but there is valet here too. The inside seating is spaced well enough apart as to not feel crowded, and there's a large traditional bar and a separate sushi(I'm sure there's an authentic name) bar to sit at as well. I appreciate the business being open for lunch and offering some lunch parings to get things flowing for newcomers. Our server was eloquent and knowledgeable about the menu, not overly chatty, but very polite. The menu had plenty of options, and balanced the act of having enough things to choose from while not overloading the amount of reading you'd need to do. Food was on the experimental side with the Crudo and cold prepared dishes. Pear foam on the scallop was interesting and tasty combination that I hadn't tried elsewhere. All the seafood was fresh and neatly prepared. Rolls were less exploratory in flavor combos I'd say, I didn't see the intention of trying to do something entirely new like with the tiraditos. Lots of hot entree type plates you can get into as well. My lone gripe was on the bill where a 3% facilities fee was added. Maybe there was a disclaimer on the menu that I missed, but this is Anti-Patron at the very least. What's the purpose here? This is on top of a meal for 3 that was $400+. I came on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday dinner. This is a very cute, upscale sushi restaurant near Highland Village. I ordered a lychee martini (which I heard are $2 Thursdays during happy hour). For the price I paid (like $18), it wasn't my favorite. Azumi is located in the upscale (and gaudy) part of River Oaks, in the same general area as Steak 48, and Le Colonial. Parking is available in the adjacent parking garage. The interior is very modern and well staffed. The menu is reminiscent of a few other upscale sushi spots. We focused on the cold and nigiri options. Generally, the presentation of the dishes were top notch and the quality of the fish seem decent for the rolls and nigiri. Really enjoyed their scallop and Uni, both were fresh and presented well. The toro tartar was decent, the toast a bit too rich but the ingredients were nicely put together. The flounder crudo was a 5/5 but the scallop tiradito was a bit of an odd dish. Pricing is also in line with other higher end sushi spots. Overall, it was better than expected for a sushi spot in the River Oaks area. It's a bit glitz but the sushi is solid. This district has a good amount of foot traffic and a decent amount of food/drink choices to chose from. Azumi is front corner of when you turn into the area. Great for drop offs as the parking garage is right behind the center and easy to access. Coming into Azumi, you'll find a very elegant and decorative facility. It almost feels as if this place was built exclusively for evening time. We were seated next to the bar and tucked in the corner. The menu isn't as extensive as I thought but it still had an adequate amount of choices. The waiter was attentive at the beginning of our stay and took drink/entrees pretty quicky (Took a long time to bring our check at the end...) I ordered the sake and it came in a sniffer ($14) . That's a first for me as I sipped it through out my meal. Unfortunately the waiter took it away when i had half a sip left. Maybe I shoulda just finish it off or the waiter shoulda just left it there (It was rather dark, so maybe the waiter didn't see it) I ordered the chirashi bowl ($29) and it was very nicely set out with different color fishes, roe and decorative leaves to make this bowl eye popping. Delicious overall. The amount offered was decent too. For $29 it better be. Overall, this place is just OK. Perhaps its what I ordered, or the elevated pricing for just slightly above average food. You can find the same stuff for a better price elsewhere. Not saying Azumi didn't do a good job, but I expected more of an experience, rather than a transactional one. Azumi is a one and done. I went here for a fun little date night and overall had a good time. I liked that they had a little coloring page and crayons for kids and non alcoholic options for drinks as well. I got to try the matcha colada which was good but a bit sweet. The food overall was good but a touch over priced for what it was. I guess in that area it lives up to expectations. I tried the chirashi bowl and yakisoba, both were delicious and great tasting. I think the part that annoyed me the most was it took forever to finally get the check and close out. We got the New Year's Eve special as well as the sweet corn and the fried rice with short rib. Both of the a la carte options were absolutely amazing and I would order again in a heartbeat. Restaurant is very nicely decorated. It is quite noisy though, especially in the bar at happy hour. I ordered nearly every item on the HH menu plus some from regular dinner menu. Stand out item: crispy rice apps with spicy tuna or avocado - both options were delish and only $2/piece during happy hour!! The daily nigiri options were tuna or salmon - both good, though they are only slightly discounted for HH while regular menu reasonably priced so not a big price difference. Branded as a new, modern, elevated Japanese restaurant, Azumi opened in 2024 in the ritzy River Oaks area of Houston. My brother knows how much I love Happy Hour (HH) deals, so he suggested visiting Azumi before their happy hour ended at 6pm. The happy hour let us sample a variety of their dishes, and for the most part, the food was really great. My flight came in on time, and by the time we reached River Oaks, it was closer to 5:15. Azumi is one of the front spaces for the River Oaks District shopping center, with the parking being free (just needed to make sure you remember where you parked, since it's a big indoor multi-story garage). It was very humid outside, so was grateful we could find seats at the bar, since HH is only valid for outdoor patio and bar seating. The bartender was also our server, and he was a bit overwhelmed during our visit (especially since we ordered the majority of food on the HH menu). But he was pleasant enough with absolutely no attitude, which greatly helped. We ended up doing three sets of orders, all before 6 to get the right pricing. Miso Soup ($4) - a decent size bowl of rich miso soup, with plenty of seaweed and tofu, and served at the most enjoyable temperature. Eastern Oysters (raw or baked, $2 a piece, minimum 3) - ended up getting 15 raw, and 3 baked. I didn't like the mayo based sauce on the baked. But the raw was great, sweet and a decent size. It was served with a smoke effect produced by some dry ice in a small pitcher. Spicy Edamame ($4) - decent amount, but they were small. The spicy glaze on the shell was good. Crispy Rice Sushi ($2 a piece, minimum 3) - this was really good, with choice of spicy tuna (got 9 pieces) and truffle avocado (3 pieces). The crispiness of the bottom of the rice, with the tenderness of the fish made for great bites. Maki ($8 a roll, with choice of hamachi, spicy tuna, and sake (salmon)) - not particularly fat, but a decent amount of pieces. We got two of each. nigiri ($4 a piece, choice of tuna or salmon) - this was good, definitely prepared well using well-marbled pieces of tuna and salmon, with a well-seasoned rice base. We had some problems with the following not coming to us in a timely manner. The kitchen was backed up for the chicken wings, and the other items our server just forgot to place the order. It was rectified, and we ate them last, while we were getting pretty full. 6 piece chicken wings ($2 a piece) - these were some of the biggest chicken wings I've seen, and it was really well prepared, almost Korean style with the same glaze and very crispy skin. It's a steal at $2 a piece, and could be the base to fill you up. Gyoza ($8) - came with three pieces. Skippable. Tuna Lettuce Wraps - ($8) - another skippable item, just two small square of iceberg lettuce with a few cubes of good tuna in each. Calamari ($8) - this was good, well prepared with a very light outer matter, and cut into smaller pieces for tenderness. No tentacles to keep the greasiness down...good choice for squid lovers. I did get two HH drinks: Lychee Martini ($9), Two Moons ($9). So my suggestion for the happy hour: Use the chicken wings to fill up enough, then use the oysters and crispy rice sushi to satisfy your seafood cravings, ordering in waves. It wasn't too busy inside, which made the spotty, non-optimal service OK. The food did seem to be served as soon as it was prepared, so just need to eat it as soon as it is delivered. Pricing was correct the first time, and payment was a snap. And the dining environment was really elegant and refined. Definitely should be on the list of Houstonians (and visitors) who really like Japanese food in a classical environment. read more

Came here for lunch on Tuesday. You can't miss it as it's located at the front of River Oaks District. There's free parking in front, so no need to valet if you can snag a spot. To start off, we had edamame, miso soup and the yellowtail & serrano crudo. The miso soup was good, and I also really enjoyed the crudo. We ordered the kinoko maki, spicy yellowtail maki, four gunkan, chutoro nigiri, aburi sake nigiri, and seared engawa nigiri. I liked the kinoko maki, it's served with mayo on the side (my favorite condiment). Unfortunately, the spicy yellowtail maki has too much avocado. I'm not a fan of it when restaurants bring out all the nigiris out on one plate. You can tell that the seared engawa and aburi sake nigiris were sitting for a bit, so I couldn't say they were good, but it's decent... I liked the chutoro nigiri a lot, but it's always loved. The foie gunkan had to be my favorite piece, however, since it all came out on one plate, the seaweed softened a bit. The foie gunkan has a great texture profile with the rice crispies they added for a bit of crunch. I still highly recommend it. As for service, I was sat immediately. Not very many cooked sushi choices. I ordered the spider roll and the spicy edamame. The presentation of the spider roll was elegant. Its flavor was decent. The spicy edamame was good. My friend ordered the flaming king crab which arrived with a fire presentation. It was good, but expensive ($34). Happy hour starts at 3pm and only qualifies if seated on the patio or bar area. So we had to move tables to take advantage of the happy hour menu. No sushi was on the happy hour menu. My friend ordered the wings and calamari from the happy hour menu. She said, both items were delicious. All waiters were efficient, friendly, and made sure we were well taken care of. Our water glasses were never empty and finished plates did sit long after completing. Around 4pm they dim the lights to transition to dinner. I tried the miso soup, spicy edamame, avocado roll & vegan maki roll all for a whopping $20. Totally worth it. They accidentally messed up my order because there's a veggie roll on the HH & a vegan roll on their main menu and they were so efficient with correcting it. The staff is all so kind and accommodating. I like the bar set up, very warm lighting and intimate but ample room for seating. It wasn't too busy around 5p but it was a Monday. Very good Japanese restaurant! Sushi was extremely fresh and delicious. Me and my wife went around 8 pm on a Wednesday when it wasn't busy and the ambiance was amazing! Very relaxing aesthetic. Waiter was amazing and provided a ton of Information for every question I had. Prices were what you'd expect. Came for a birthday dinner with friends. Made a prior reservation, a card is required for 7+ individuals, but the reservation process was fairly simple. Upon arrival on the day of we were sat until half or majority of the party was present. The ambiance and service here is great, a very quaint, warm atmosphere. We went to a private event involving a Bluefin Tuna Carving. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne and some passed crispy rice nigiri and other hors d'oeuvres. There was also a table serving two sakes - one full bodied and the other lighter. The main event was the tuna carving. We were greeted by the sushi chef who explained the process and shared the honored guest was 260 pounds and was from the Mexican Baja. The time to breakdown the tuna was probably 15-20 minutes. Once the massive fillets were removed the chef and sous chef broke it down further into the size and shape we are familiar with seeing behind the glass at a restaurant. Sashimi was passed along with some wooden spoons to scrape along the bone structure of the remaining carcass to scoop some wonderful toro. Came here for happy hour, specifically for the $2 martinis on Thursdays. This was my first time here and I'll def be back!! I had the crispy avocado truffle rice, the chicken wings, and the grilled oysters. Everything was a 10/10. The martinis were strong and delicious. The service was good and even though it was busy, I was still well taken care of. They have a nice patio and inside seating as well. Wow. It's Chinese new year and nothing. The pea flower Martin was a great short pour. And didn't have the magic of the color change that's you use the pea flower for. The food that we started with was so less than. It was all we ordered. Not sure how you mess up edamame!! Ask for the check and say a wonderful 3% restaurant charge. So I asked what it was for. And was told it was for the restaurants. I was under the impression everything was for the restaurant. Then I was told it was an optional charge. It doesn't go to the staff it's just a charge. I came here on a Thursday afternoon for their Happy Hour menu. It's located in the River Oaks District, so there's a few free parking spots and a free garage. There's also valet parking as well. If you're wanting to try their HH menu, I'd definitely recommend coming right at 3PM or making a reservation. By the time my friend and I had left it was packed! The Happy Hour menu seating is available for the patio, high tables & bar only. The service was great, had an attentive server and quick service! Grilled oysters: sauce was good and overall was a good dish. Shishito peppers: I would pass on this next visit. Flavoring was good, but not a huge fan of shishito peppers. Crispy fried calamari: A dish that I would definitely pass. The calamari tasted a bit bland and wasn't as crispy as other restaurants I've tasted. The dipping sauce also tasted just like mayo(?) to me. Crispy spicy tuna rice: One of the highlight dishes! Perfectly crispy and the spicy tuna was fresh and delicious. Hamachi maki roll: Good! Not much to say, I think this is hard to mess up and it satisfied the craving. Lychee martinis: $2 martinis! Really cannot beat this and it's a reliable, delicious drink. Chicken wings: second favorite dish! Flavoring was good, but wished that the wings were a bit more crispy. Brussels sprouts: I would pass on this next time. Was more like a thin crispy Brussels sprout chip rather than the whole Brussels sprout. Flavoring was good on this dish, but I got tired of the taste after a few bites. What can I say other than the food is amazing. Let's not forget the happy hour everyday from 3-6pm. Thursday are $2 lychee martinis. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Very attentive to guests. The tuna rice crisp was amazing we ordered 4 orders. We chose to sit on the patio which after the rain was fine. Not to crowded. Definitely will be my go to spot.
