I have to admit, I am going to be biased here because just about any bar that serves Belgian beer is going to be top notch in my books! And if that does get my point across, just know that Belgian beers are amazing, and in turn those who carry them are amazing. And unlike other Belgian beer joint, this place doesn't tend to be crowded. Last time I was here, my gf and I sat at the bar... we wanted some apps, and they had a pate special vs. a pate app on the menu. I asked which is larger... I forget now which the waiter suggested, but he did say it was a large amount and I would be happy. His hands showed something the size of a football, I was excited!!! Ended up being a thin slice of patè about 4x5 inches if that!! And like two small piece of bread. I was very disappointed by this. Now, which to I give more weight to... Belgian bar with room to enjoy your beer, or small quantity patè? Hmmmm. Im going to be frugal here and give it a 3 stars (though I'd like to give it 3.5). read more

Tucked away on the UES between 2nd and 3rd lies a fabulous little Belgian cafe known as B. I've been wanting to check this out for quite a while, and was quite pleased that I finally got to last night. My friends and I had already had dinner (and lord only knows how many pitchers of Coors Lite, ewww) before we came here. Our party dwindled down, so those of us who remained decided to try the oft-seen but never before tried B. Cafe. I'm not much of a beer drinker - usually only at happy hours and kickball events, but I just LOVED the beers here. My previous experience with Belgian beers was limited to Stella and Hoegaarden, so I was excited to try something new. Great variety to satisfy ever beer drinker's palate. I just fell in love with the Kasteel Rouge - cherry flavored and sweet, almost like a wine in some ways. MMM. Pretty good deal for $8. If you are overwhelmed with all the choices (as I was), ask the bartender for a suggestion. You will be satisfied. Exposed brick walls, narrow bar area, and dim lighting make this a great spot to go on a date or just with a few friends. Beers range from $6 (Stella) to $12 (or maybe more). There is dining in the back which, unfortunately, we did not try, but from the look and smell of things, I know I will have to return for dinner one day! read more

If it weren't for the waitress jedi mind tricking me into giving up my "outside" coffee, this would have been a 5 star rating. I don't know how it happened, but next thing you know my perfect cup of steamed milk & sugared "outside" goodness was gone. Other than the thievery described above this place was amazing. Great brunch, probably the most delicious eggs benedict I've ever had. the hollandaise was perfect, texture, color, everything. Just perfection over perfectly poached eggs, runny yoke, solid whites. Friends had the mussels and burger. We ordered the waffle to split. Amazing! The waffle was crispy, yet fluffy accompanied by nutella, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream. So freaking good! The beer selection is great. When you ask for a Chimay, the bartender will ask you which one. Gold, Red, or Blue label? They have them all. So good! Naturally, they have an assortment of Belgian beer. I got the special for dinner... it was Swedish meatballs. They didn't call it that, but that's what it was. The meatball gravy and the Belgian frites went perfect together. While eating, the bartender, a tall slender Belgian man with a teal shirt, was accosted by a former customer. She seemed very loud, American, and unhappy with some prior service she received. She was, dare I say, "bitchy", claimed that there was an extraneous beer on her tab, which she would have gladly drank (plus 4 more) if only it had actually materialized, and threatened to write a "bad blog" about the experience. The slender teal-shirted man tried to deal with her coolly, while she seemed quite insistent about being placated right that instant, and was angry that there was no manager present. The cool teal-shirted man said "but we are a team here" as she melted down into a yet more epic conniption fit. The whole experience made me look at myself in the mirror, and resolved to be a kinder, gentler Yelper. As she stormed out, the Belgian guy apologized to me for her existence. Been here a few times now - both dinner and brunch. Not really blown away either time (and not particularly satisfied either). Service can be pretty rude and inattentive at times, which really bugs me. Mussels in wine was really missing the mark for me (perhaps I've been too spoiled by my delicious "flex" friend down the street). I found this place one weekend afternoon while I was waiting for my iPhone screen to get replaced in the neighborhood. I don't know much about beers, but was feeling adventurous after I saw the sandwich-board outlining the pretty awesome selection. The outside sign says 'Belgian Cafe', but the actual name is the 'B. cafe'...why? I dunno'...It seems very authentic. Hoegaarrten $6, St. Bernardus $12, if they have it. The Belgian beer selection is without peer. The menu is full of interesting dishes, but I always get the 'Belgian burger' and a few beers. The music is always piped through an ipod, loaded with odd European music. The fries are really good and served with mayonnaise and 'mayostard'. Excellent mussels-- a must-try! We went for brunch and sat in the outside courtyard... perfect for a sunny day. The eggs benedict were divine, one of the best hollandaise sauces out there. And with more than a handful of premium Belgium beers to choose from (both on draft and bottled) that are served in playfully unique glasses, this meal was huge on the fun-factor scale. Came for a quick upper east side brunch on a sunday and it did exactly as advertised. I had the spicy lamb sandwich with frites, which was exactly as advertised--nice and spicy. It came on a nice roll and was served with frites (along with 3 dipping sauces). it is a small cozy (albeit dark place) and the service was good. Overall, not a great dining experience. While our waitress was great when we arrived, she was completely inattentive once our order was taken. Food was great but we were over charged and my frites were way over done. The worst part was a busser spilled an entire glass or water on my husband. They were more concerned with the floor than anything and, while the busser apologized, no one asked my husband if he was okay. It may not have looked bad because it mostly hit his lower back, but it seeped into his shorts, soaked through to his boxers, and he was uncomfortable for the next hour. THREE AND A HALF. This adorable little Brasserie is set below-street level on a quiet avenuue across from a school playground. We arrived on a Sunday at 11:10 am and were seated immediately (even though Yelp says the restaurant didn't officially open until 11:30). The inside atmosphere was quiet and romantic. Just the sort of place you'd like to visit after church or with that special someone or long lost friend. We were escorted past a long, wooden bar with speciality beers, through the small, comfortable seating to an outdoor patio seat. This was perfect as this past weekend the weather was not so bad. The carpeting was more like a faux grass which absorbed water so ladies, be ware: and do not set your purses on the ground if it has recently rained. This relaxing, green patio was enclosed and was surrounded by a natural wood (like, sticks) fence that made the feeling a little more rustic and removed from the city. We were quickly served our coffee and orange juice and our order was taken promptly. The wait for the food was the exact opposite. It took almost 40 minutes to get our eggs benedict and croque madame. No bread or snack was brought in the meantime, so we were left alone to conversation and coffee, but luckily, neither went dry. Around 11:30/11:45 the church crew arrived and the cafe became crammed with big tables of New York families all trying to talk over one another (not being from New York or having a loud family, it's a little hard on the ears, especially coming from a long night out on the town). Not the restaurants fault, so just know that once the church crew arrives, your romantic breakfast (outside) is over. The Croque Madame was fantastic. The cheese was perfectly melted over the ham smothered by a perfectly fried egg all piled on top of a thick slice of baquette equivalent to a piece of Texas Toast. It was served with a side salad and balsamic vinegrette that I am determined to match. The Eggs Benedict was one of the smallest I've ever seen (which, for me, is great as I am a small person and don't need to eat my body weight in protein) and it is served with french fries (frites) and three dipping sauces: miracle whip, ketchup and chipotle mayo. The hollondaise sauce was smooth and creamy and the eggs were served on an english muffin. A lighter version to a normally very heavy dish. Everything is a little pricey, to be ready to shell out at least $15/person before including alcohol. When we were walking out of the restaurant around 12:30, there was a line of patrons waiting out the door and on the street corner. The tables had all completely filled. It clearly is a popular brunch destination and I can see why. read more

I randomly found this place on yelp and decided to go. I got the "boat paddle" which is a beer sampler, you get to pick 4 draft beer . Don't remember what I got but they were good beer! For food we got the grilled calamari, mussels-madrid, chicken stew and fries.. It was all very good but alot of work on the mussels haha I got lazy after a while but it was good and love the broth.. Good food with a Belgian/French twist- I wouldn't go out right and say it's truly a Belgian resto- at least not for brunch. They have the standard brunch fare, which means eggs, (Belgian) waffles, and the like. I made a reservation for 4 for 2:30 on New Year's Day for brunch. Unfortunately, 2 of our friends were running late, and one of the hosts (a guy) was giving us issues about not letting us sit down. I mean I understand they could have sat others, but there was no point in making us wait considering it was late and there was no one else really coming in (but lots of people at the restaurant). I hate that restaurants do this. Finally, ANOTHER hostess asked me and my one friend if we wanted to sit. Other than this, the service was fine- nice, and polite. EXCEPT our food took freaking forever to come out. Like 30+ min- not sure why. My coffee (meh) and freshly squeezed OJ (yum) came out quickly though. It costs you though- $5 for the OJ and $3 for the juice. Onto the food: i ordered the egg sandwich, $12, which sounded different. It was scrambled eggs with onion, Swiss cheese, avocado, with lots of Belgian mayo on a French baguette. Sides were greens with balsamic, and crispy yummy Belgian frites (very good- which came with a palette of mayo, ketchup, and mustard- I only barely touched the mayo- it wasn't artisan mayo like the traditional Belgians). I didn't eat much of the bread because I'm a dieting (a bit, ha) but I had a few bites. Pretty good. The sandwich parts were good- esp the avocado. But nothing mind boggling. The greens- fine. I wish they'd put the dressing on the side. The best thing was the frites. My other friends got the eggs benedict florentine, which was the traditional fare with spinach. Came with no salad, but frites (you can substitute). I think these were $12. My other friend got an omelette with spinach, and feta. She liked it. It all seemed like normal brunch just with higher quality ingredients and a fancier Belgian twist. On decor: it's bigger than it seemed with a heated back patio and downstairs. You can eat at the bar. Otherwise, it's whatevs- fancy pub like. There's another location on the West side- not sure what that's like. I don't know if I was wowed enough to return. This is a cozy spot, good for a local drinking spot. We happened to go on a night that Hurricane Hannah had everyone running for cover and looking for a restaurant on the UES without a reservation. I was happy to remember to try B. - it turned out to be warm, dry and the food very inviting. Of course, Belgian beer abounds - and is most definitely the thing to order. B. Cafe serves all their native brew with proper steins and glasses. I started with the butter lettuce salad which had bacon and blue cheese chunks and dressing. It was really presented well, the lettuce sweet and tender, but with too much dressing for my taste. We also had the endive salad which had sauteed onions and a red wine vinegar dressing. Again, a little heavy on the dressing. I had to have the moules frites. The mussels were steamed in beer, garlic and onions, and served in a large pot. The mussels were good, but I would have preferred a tomato based broth instead, because the broth was bitter, and did not lend itself to dipping bread. The fries were good, served with mayonnaise, ketchup and a spicy sauce. The dining area is dark and romantic, and I understand there is a garden in the back. Perhaps when the weather is better I can check it out. The bar also looked inviting and I noticed a bar menu which sounded worthy of checking out too. Can't wait! read more

Gooo Belgium! We have only been here twice- but it has been twice in 3 days. The bar is beautiful and the bar tender is so informative about all the wonderful Belgian beers. My personal favorite is the Kasteel- a cherry flavored beer with 8% alcohol. After 2 of these I started singing along with the french music playing. The bar food has been good thus far. My bf got the bitter-ballen which are tiny deep fried meatballs. And I got the pot of pickles which are actually a plate of pickles. All in all the experience has been wonderful and we are going back for dinner after we save some money. Imported beer can add up quickly so drink wisely. read more

Dined at the East side location. Really cool atmosphere, cozy and dimly lit. If you're a Belgian beer lover [like so] you'll definitely appreciate this place. Started out with the Boston lettuce salad covered in a thick, tangy blue cheese dressing- decent, but overpriced for the smaller portion they gave you. Pretty sure you can't go to this place without having the mussels. From the variety of 6 we ordered "Madrid"-- saffron, white wine, chicken broth and "Garlic & Beer"-- Hoegaarden/shaved garlic. With seemingly strong ingredients, the two were essentially interchangeable. The mussels themselves, however, were fantastic. **If you're sharing with friends I'd recommend having a tomato based one like the Provencale AND a wine based one. I've been going here since they opened, and have never had a bad meal there. ever. great belgian beer selection. great moules frites. i especially like the hoegarten and garlic ones - i had the madrid ones last night and they were also very yummy. the frites are crisp and perfectly cooked and come with mayo, ketchup, and a spicy mix of the 2. we usually need to get extra of the 3rd sauce. i just wish the orders of fries were bigger. cause i'm a pig for good fries. they moved a few items off the main menu that are still on the bar menu, do not miss the bitterballen, which are tiny meatballs, breaded and then fried, and served with mustard. yum. i said yum and i meant it. they also do a tremendously good hamburger and a really nice beef stew. it used to be a daube (beef cooked in red wine) but now they have a more tradition flemish one cooked in beer that is delicious. they make belgian waffles for dessert that are nothing like what you get in a greek diner. they are so light and crunchy, they seem to disappear in your mouth as you are chewing them. i noticed that they expanded that to 3 serving styles now, plain w/ sugar, w/whipped cream and chocolate sauce, and w/ vanilla ice cream, berries and chocolate sauce. how can you go wrong? enjoy read more

Went here for brunch and it was so delicious! We got a the B Cafe Waffle for the table, which comes with vanilla ice cream, berries, and chocolate sauce and it was so on point. I'm told they make their waffles with imported flour from Belgium. I also got the Eggs Benedict Classic, which comes with ham. So so so yummy! Terrific food and dessert!! :) We visited the place around 8:00pm. We ordered 5oz. Beer sampler, and it was good enough to enjoy a variety of beers you can't taste in norm. We ordered a grilled salmon to share and the food was amazing! The salmon was served with steamed spinach with creamy source. For dessert, we ordered a waffle with blueberry source. It was so crispy that I was confused of eating a cookie. :) but I couldn't help but to indulge the perfection of the taste. Overall, the experience of Belgium restaurant was fantastic!! We popped into this little gem on a rainy Friday night and it is THE perfect spot for a good beer! They really know their beer here and while I am not a big beer drinker - I actually enjoyed their Belgian dark beer! Matt had the B. Cafe burger and I had the chicken Waterzooi stew. The Belgian style Moules Frites were THE BEST thing and served with mayonaise & mustard on the side :) yumma. We also treated ourselves to the Belgian waffle for dessert and it was so/so- we are not big waffle people and it tasted a bit dry to me. The ice cream served with it was amazing though. Fresh fruit on the side and real whip cream topping which Matt enjoyed. The best thing about this place is their beer selection. They boast over 30 Artisan Belgian beers. We especially enjoyed the Leffe Dark and the Chimay blue. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the staff was VERY friendly. Great service experience here. We also liked the quiet/ relaxed rustic feel; on a Friday night the music was not blaring and we could actually have a conversation and just mellow out. Just what we were looking for. The best thing is that it's in our "hood" in the UES! Love it- a true gem. Came back again on a Friday night around 10pm and the place was packed. Drinking the beers on tap is certainly the way to go- $6. I had a GREAT dark in a bottle (since they were out of dark on tap) called Trappistes Rochefort #10. I found this spot because my kids took me here. Very nice, interesting menu, friendly service and moderately priced for the UES. The food is great. Save room for the waffles on the dessert menu. Went to b cafe this past weekend for a late lunch and definitely enjoyed it. The place itself is a little tight, but so are most restaurants in this part of town. We split a chopped salad and a steak sandwich. Definitely could have skipped the salad. The sandwich however was great and totally enough for two people when you consider the fries and the salad that come with it. The fries are out of this world and they give you a few dipping sauces to play around with. For dessert we topped it off a waffle and ice cream and chocolate sauce...PHENOMENAL... Only issue i'd say I have is it can be pretty tight and there seemed to always be a wait for the bathroom which is mid-dining room. Had a burger for lunch which was very tasty. The pommes frites were my favorite part of the meal (besides the beer) My brother went with the Steak Sandwich and also enjoyed a couple of Hoegaarden's. This place has a really cool ambiance to it, made me yearn for my days is Brussels. We ended up sitting at the bar but since it was just the two of us this was not a problem for us. Went here on a Tuesday evening with my folks and boyfriend for a nice dinner. My boyfriend and I had just been to Belgium so we were excited for the Belgian beer list (which is quite extensive) and all the traditional dishes. The server was very knowledgeable about the beers. I knew I wanted a classic sour ale and she did not steer me wrong. My mother wanted a nice dark stout similar to a Guiness and she was equally pleased with what the server recommended. We each ordered an app, and they were all fabulous. The cheese croquettes tasted just how I remembered them from Belgium. Soft and creamy on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside. The meals were enormous! I ended up taking half of my sandwich home. That being said, the duck club sandwich is TO DIE FOR. If I keeled over right there I would have no regrets. The bread was buttery, the duck was cut nice and thin, the egg was perfectly fried, and the cheese was oozy and stringy and delightful. I totally did not want to share. Oh and those french fries! They are clearly double battered/double fried. They have that amazing crispy outside that McDonald's wishes they could create on the cheap. I may not have been able to finish my sandwich because I finished my fries. #noshame. I can't even remember what everyone else had I was too focused on my amazing sandwich. I think my boyfriend had the pork belly. It smelled good. I was too busy being nose deep in duck though to care. Mmm....Frites I love Frites. But that wasn't all that was tasty here. The potato pancake/lox was super tasty. My dinning partner had the burger. Tasty. The Frites were tasty & the pink dipping sauce (one of 3 - mayo, catsup & spicy) was really tasty and spicy. The belgian endive salad was REALLY good. The dressing was almost sweet. And the desert. Wow. I ate too much before that, but how do you say no to a belgian waffle with ice cream and berries and whip cream and chocolate (correct answer - YOU DON'T, especially when it's accompanied by Belgian Hot Chocolate). Reading this, I realize it looks more greasy & sugary than it was. Everything was fresh & yummy and not at all greasy - even the frites! Think European chocolate & fried things, not American Hershies bars and Mickey D's. Even after moving out of UES for two years now, I still come back to B Cafe for their ever fulfilling brunch. This is my go to stop whenever I'm finished running in Central Park and end up on the east side. Service is always friendly and food is consistently delicious. Portions are super generous. I love everything Belgian: beer, chocolate, moules, frites, shawarma and even Irish coffee. The beer selection is typical Belgian beer list but a few major items missing like lambic, my beloved Saison IV, but they did have some solid trappiste brews for reasonable prices in 'merica. So the food overall was ok. No one at our table was feeling moules and frites, come to think of it, no one in the restaurant had the pot and shells...odd. One in our group got the seafood gratin though and he said it was delicious, but missed the soup base. (he's also a chef at Nobu, just wanted to mention that randomly). I think it's safe to say we were disappointed by the duck club sandwich. It's more club than duck. The duck breast slices were so thin, I forgot we were having it. It's heavy though...probably from the thick buttery bread. Now, I had the skirt steak under the "Big Plates" section on the menu. Damn, they don't lie when they say big plate. The steak was literally a foot long, 2.5 inches wide and about 3/4 inches thick. Big piece of meat and cooked to perfection. I wanted to try the meatballs but the restaurant was scared to serve it to me cause I'm allergic to apples (there's an apple compote with it). I can't guarantee I'll be back, but the beer list was solid enough that I'd go there on a whim if I was in UES with no where to go. This has been on my list for a while now and we finally went on Saturday night. We made a reservation , but didn't need one as the place had lots of open space. The insides is dimly lit, romantic and had a hidden feel to it. We ate in the back garden, which is super cute and also very romantic. The beer selection was amazing (sadly i couldn't drink any), but they also had a good wine and liquor selection for those of you who are also glutards. The food was amazing and blew my expectations out of the water. We started with the grilled calamari, which was cooked wonderfully and was served in an olive oil based sauce with spices. Very tasty I got the Provençale Moules Frites - the muscles were HUGE! I mean these are some of the biggest muscles I have ever seen. They were very fresh and all opened so I was able to eat every last one. They were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The fries were also delicious. Crunchy and large and served with 3 sauces. My bf got the scallops, which came with 4 large scallops, the best mashed potatoes I have ever eaten and asparagus. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the sauce that covered the plate was very good too. But those potatoes...OMG so so so so good. Everyone should order as a side if they don't come with your meal. Our waiter was amazing, funny, attentive and helpful with food and drink selection. This was some of the best services I have had in a while in the city. After our outdoor dinner we cooled off with one last drink at the bar. The bar tender is also very friendly and knowledgeable. This is one of the gems on the UES. Near my house, went in there only after about 1 year after I moved in the area and I instantly loved it. It's a Belgian cafe with a great selection of beer and the food looks good. Pros: - beer selection, with the usual suspects (Stella Artois, Leffe), but also special Belgian beers such as Kwak, Delerium Tremens etc. - Remy, one of the bartenders, great guy - overall feel of intimacy, seems like a place that will have regulars rather than a lot of new customers 4* because I didn't have the food and the bar it's kind of off the beaten track, but I liked it a lot. One of my favorite european restaurants in NYC. I have stopped here for a dinner maybe 7 or 8 times, and now finally got to write a review. And it is 5 stars, because this place never disappoints. Beware of big portions - they do not mess around, if you ordered appetizers you most likely will be moaning when you see the sizes of your entrees. Great and properly done steaks and Berkshire Pig, wonderful Moules Frites and sides. Sadly, I never had enough space left for dessert, so nothing to report there, but what I'm sure you will have enough space for is beer. Great selection of Belgian Stouts, Ales and Pilsners, including my favorite Tripel Karmeliet. One more great thing about this place - they have a small and very cozy garden in the back open pretty much year-round, with heaters in the winter. B Cafe is a quaint restaurant on the UES. I went there for brunch and they have a unique and delicious spread on their menu. Their egg salads and omelette were delicious. The service was also quick and the waitress was very sweet. Breakfast items average to be about $14. read more

Sat at the bar and had the $15 lobster roll (sliders), pomme frites (w/ 3 sauces) and a draft beer (choice of 3) special. Great food, cozy little spot. I have also been here for brunch. It can get very busy very quickly but we waited the 45 minutes and it was worth it! Very good breakfast foods and blood mary. Service was excellent both times! Came here for brunch today hoping to satisfy a craving for waffles. We thought this place would do the trick being Belgian and all. Boy were we wrong, unfortunately. The place was packed despite being tucked away down a side street so it hinted to us for hopeful yumminess to come. We had reservations so we were seated fairly quickly. The decor seemed old village pub with all the wood. Very quaint. There was also a back patio which I imagine must be very pleasant during the warmer months but with the door left open today, the whole restaurant froze! The menu has wonderful options with most leaning towards the obvious Belgian side, i.e. mussels and fries. I spotted the Belgian waffle fairly quickly which was to be served with a scoop of ice cream and a chocolate sauce but the specials menu offered a waffle stuffed with BACON and two eggs! Score! My other half went with the other special which included a waffle topped with a chicken stew (odd but he was feeling adventurous). Food came super fast and when I looked at the plate placed in front of me, I could see how that was. My sunny side up eggs were hard boiled (probably precooked and left under a hot lamp). The bacon was good but how can bacon not be. Unfortunately, the star of the show was a flop! Waffles should come crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a lovely golden tan. My waffle was Amber brown and had the texture of drywall. Drywall! I was so disappointed. Each bite cut the roof of my mouth. I asked for syrup to help soften the waffle but to no avail. You really can't resurrect a five day old waffle (might've been!) to my dismay. My guy said the best part of his meal was probably the side salad it was served with. Sadly, it was the only good thing. I looked around and people seemed to be happily chomping away on the omelettes (foolproof) and wished I'd gone with one. Overall, the ambience was good and they seem to Offer a ton of Belgian beer options but I wouldn't go out of my way (walk 8 blocks lol) to try it again unless I fancied some mussels to try. read more
