I work right across the street from Baba and have been staring at this place everyday since I transferred to work in Carlsbad. I finally popped in today for coffee. Cute place, felt laid back and beachy and they had quite the selection. I mean coffee, food AND alcohol?! My kind of place. I didn't try their food but I did get the blended Horchata coffee. Little pricey, but it was freakin refreshing delicious, and it gave me just the kick in the butt I needed to finish my long day. Great honey / ginger chai! Delicious avocado toast (their gluten-free bread is awesome). The staff is super helpful and friendly, and the vibe is great for hanging out or doing a little work. Ok, i admit -i went there 12 minutes before they closed- so maybe part of what i'm about to say it's because of bad timing. But... This was a bad coffee experience and the baristas literally mocked me in front of my face. I wanted a drink with RASPBERRY flavoring, which is a pretty common flavor for coffee drinks. Many coffee shops have a raspberry mocha on their menu, and if not, raspberry and vanilla are the most common. Fine, they dont't have raspberry flavoring. But the baristas don't need to stand right behind the counter in front of me after i order talking about how weird it was. I wanted a flavor, and they don't have it. That's no big deal. Talking about it loudly on the other hand is a huge deal for customer service: "RASPBERRY???? who ever heard of that before?" Next time, why don't you wait 10 minutes until the customer leaves before you make fun of them?. Now i'm home 5 mins later getting ready to throw away the iced coffee i got. There are outlets along one wall, but when it gets crowded, you'll want to make sure your computer/devices are charged if you have to sit elsewhere. There are also some outdoor seats with umbrellas for shade. The music was a blend The coffee selection is good. I've had an americano and turmeric latte here, and they were both delicious. i try to hit each and every coffee shop when i come into a new town and i see that there is a great offering of real coffee shops, and not chains. This was a great little spot, i appreciated that they also offer craft beer with the craft coffee and if i had been paying more attention when i ordered, i would have certainly tried the espresso shot with the stout that they suggested. Coffee and food was good and I really wanted to like this place but customer service accounts for so much when you are competing with so many new coffee shops in the area. I ordered my coffee and donut and managed to eat my donut before ever getting my coffee. My drink was given to one of the customers who was sitting next to me. An obvious acquaintance of the employee but even after the customer pointed out that she already HAD her drink the employee shrugged her shoulders and said, Oh you can just keep it! The avocado toast was a waste of money. The toast crust was hard as a rock and the toasted bread was rubbery. This awful bread was topped with a generous amount of avocado and way too much black pepper. Maybe there was some salt too, but I couldn't taste anything but pepper. I understand we're in a pandemic and I've been giving grace to all food establishments because they are doing there best. I visited Baba when restaurants were first given the green light to re-open (before the outdoor dining mandate). My friend and I were waiting for a table at Shorehouse Kitchen and walked over and decided to share a fresh squeezed mimosa. It was delicious but it took them 20 minutes to make it. Too long in my opinion especially since it wasn't crowded but again, they had just re-opened and we understood they were still trying to figure out how to operate under new rules. No big deal. This morning my husband and I decided to head out for something different other than our go to Peet's and I remembered Baba. The girl at the front was flustered, she was trying to take our order while also speaking to the owner or manager at the same time. We ordered two cappuccinos and before we could add food items, she gave us our total. We clarified we wanted food (avocado toast and almond croissant) and she finished the transaction. Once she gave me my card back, she walked away. No mention of where to pick our food up or asking if we wanted a receipt. Btw- , a 15% gratuity was automatically added to the total per the sign at the register. We got our cappuccinos which is why they got two stars, they weren't bad. I ordered a medium but was given a small, annoying but not worth making an issue out of. Then we waited for a substantial amount time for our food. Turns out they gave our avocado toast to someone else and there was no mention of our almond croissant. When I asked how much longer it would be, it was obvious I annoyed the girl by her curt response before she quickly walked off. She finally yelled that it would 10-15 more minutes. By this time close to 30 minutes had passed from when we ordered and given It was clear we were inconveniencing them by asking where the food that we paid for was, we were over it. My husband cancelled our food and asked for our money to be refunded. There was never even a fake apology for the amount of time we waited or the fact that they gave our food to someone else. read more

Updated review: Baba has really grown on me, especially after exploring more of the coffee houses in the area and even surrounding areas. I changed my review from 4 to 5 stars. I've had multiple drinks and eats now, from snacks to sandwiches and I have to say it is one of my go-to's now. Especially if I need to escape and get some work done. I stand by my previous statement of how comfortable the environment is, and have even taken advantage of the blankets they have to offer! Yes.. blankets. They've won my heart. Service is great, environment A+, so is the food. Win all around. Previous review: Only visited once, but comfortable, hearty or simple breakfast options. Donuts, cookies, and pie for breakfast, you pretty much win me over. This zen coffee shop is a great place to grab a delicious cup of coffee and just hang around. You can work or study in peace, read a book, or catch up with a friend. No matter what you choose, this place was as quaint as a caffeinated library! On a calm Friday afternoon, the alleyway between Baba Coffee and the restaurant next door was soothing and peaceful. There's a touch of muted intimacy just sitting there, and letting the sun rest on your back for a bit. Not sure how much hustle and bustle there would be on a typical Saturday, but I suppose I just lucked out. The coffee itself was fantastic! I got myself a cold brew, which was smooth and strong, that was pleasantly refreshing on an August day. They even used crushed ice - which, in my opinion, adds a certain dimension to any iced beverage. The only down side is that they used too MUCH ice. Literally 2/3rds of the cup was ice, so after a dozen or so sips, you're relegated to a sad cup of quasi-frozen water. But other than that little hiccup, this place was a definite gem! read more

Today I stopped by off of a recommendation from a friend. I have been in search of a good lox bagel for the whole 3 years I've been in North County and today I finally found it!! The lox were extremely fresh and had such great flavor.. The heirloom tomatoes were so juicy and paired perfectly with the everything bagel and capers. If you're looking for an awesome lox bagel definitely go to Baba's! I got the iced Tropical Passion Fruit Tea and it was so delicious with fruity notes that are so refreshing. Had to get my car fixed and decided to walk down and try this place while I waited. Service was the opposite of friendly and actually felt uncomfortable with how snooty the girls behind the counter were. At first they were too busy talking to even acknowledge me. Drink was good but for a medium Chai, almost $7 for a drink was steep. I would normally not really mind paying that price is the service was at least good. With so many coffee shops around, don't waste your time here. Go somewhere where the people are actually nice and happy to have your business. read more

Okay hear me out-- The ambiance is perfect. I came here on a rainy day and it felt like I was in a goddamn Twilight film. Loved it. Got their hot chai tea-- It was pretty good! I go to a lot of coffee shops to work and their chai is up there as some of the best. Now... Their food is a different story. I ordered their breakfast sandwich. Their sign read "egg and cheese on a bagel." Hell yeah. It's dropped off at my table and I'm left speechless. The egg is sliding off of the bagel like a slip-N-slide. The bagel is untoasted. That's odd. As I'm readjusting the egg, I see speckles of black covering the whole sandwich. Pepper. Not a humble sprinkling. A fucking snowstorm. I took a bite. Not only is the untoasted bagel like wall installation in my mouth, but the pepper is unbearable. I eat the whole thing cause I'll be damned if I don't finish a meal. But guys, I was fighting for my life. I was coughing from the sheer amount of pepper. I'll be honest, I feel like it was just an off day. But man, I've never forgotten that sandwich. read more
