Recently tried a new deli I had been seeing on Instagram -- Baba's Deli NY Style Subs, located on Pacific Coast Highway just west of Hawthorne Blvd in the south end of Torrance. They offer a wide variety of subs, with both preset combinations and a build-your-own option. In addition to sandwiches, they also have homemade salads like tuna and chicken, along with classic sides such as potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw. My wife and I ordered a couple of different sandwiches to try. First up was the Reuben, which can be made with either pastrami or corned beef. They were accommodating and split it for us with half of each -- a nice touch. They use Boar's Head products, so you're getting premium-quality meats and cheeses. The Reuben was served on squaw bread (by request) and loaded with a generous portion of meat, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing. The meat was almost shaved and incredibly tender. The only minor downside was that it leaned slightly dry -- a bit more dressing or mustard would have brought everything together better. Still, a strong 10/10. Next was the Italian sub, which was also well put together with generous portions of meat and cheese, plus lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Very solid. We also ordered a medium potato salad. It was good, though more average compared to the sandwiches. The staff was very friendly and willing to assist with your order, then bring your order to your table . So this gem of a sandwich shop popped up on my social media. I'm a sucker for a good sandwich so I saved the post. I went back to it a day later and didn't even realize that it was close to where I live, so I decided to stop by on my way home. Late afternoon 4/20/26. I never noticed it because you can't really spot it street side. The entrance is on the other side of the building and a bit hidden. Anyhow, I found it ok. Walked in, was greeted promptly and found the place to be nice and clean! Steve greeted me and asked how he could help. I was getting a few sandwiches, one of which Steve recommended (Hot pastrami). Bad bad not bad good. League average honey mustard. Bad combo. Way too sweet when it's honey turkey and honey ham, flavor profile too light. Inconsistent if you look at other pics. Good roll though. I relied on Yelp to find a deli in the South Bay Area, and based on all the great reviews I decided to check out Baba's. I went with the Monster, cajun turkey meat, roast beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, jalapeños, avocado, honey mustard and cajun mayo on dark sweet wheat bread. I substituted the American cheese with pepper jack, and instead of the dark sweet wheat bread I went with a French roll, and no onions. Baba's uses premium Boars Head meats. The sandwich was loaded with meat and a perfect ratio of toppings. Loved it. I called in my order, and it was ready when I arrived. I'd definitely go back to try the other sandwiches on the menu. If you haven't been here before, I recommend that you first try Baba's Deli #1. It's an excellent introduction to what they offer, perhaps with some nice features you don't get at other sandwich shops. The sandwich includes turkey, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, onion, pickles, honey mustard, and mayo, on a sweet dark wheat bread. Everything comes together perfectly! Of course, there are other sandwiches, different variations of subs, and I've not had a bad one. The sandwiches are on the large side, so if you're starving, one sandwich will fill you up, or you can put aside the other half for later in the day (or split it with someone). If you, or someone in your party, is not in the mood for a sandwich, there are several different salads to choose from, but I'll be honest and admit that given a choice between a sandwich and a salad, a sandwich wins every time in my book. While most of their business is take-out, there are a few tables inside if you want to sit down. The owners have always been very polite and very willing to change up a sandwich if you need to make a minor change. At long last, a sandwich place in Torrance that I can frequent! I'm a huge fan of sandwiches, and it's been really hard to find a reliable place to go. Mama Says just doesn't do it for me, New York Deli went WAY down in quality, and Board & Brew is fine, but it's not something I seek out. And now that Jersey Mike's has sold out to Blackstone private equity (https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/19/food/jersey-mikes-subs-sale), I have already seen the quality decline and cost cutting in effect. Another chain going down the drain, along with Subway and Togo's. I found Baba's a few months ago, saw the positive reviews, and took a risk. I've never looked back. It's a no-frills location, with only seating for about 6-10 people. But this was meant to be a take-out place, so they focus on the food inventory and freshness. The sandwiches are surprisingly affordable, mostly between $11-14. Compared to Jersey Mike's, it's about the same price for a higher quality sandwich, and they LOAD IT UP with meat and toppings. I go here about 3-4 times a month, have tried almost every sandwich, and it never disappoints. It's a bit hard to find at first, but it's worth the discovery. The ingredients are high quality and fresh, the owner is very friendly, and they always try to accommodate little requests. For example, I wanted to buy a sandwich for that day, and save one for the next day, which I wrote in the notes. They all of the meat, cheese, and lettuce on, but separately wrapped the tomatoes, pickles, onions, and gave me mustard and mayo packets to keep the bread dry overnight. The dark sweet bread is excellent, but it doesn't go with everything. It's soft and sweet, so there are some sandwiches that call for a really nice sourdough, or a crusty french roll, but definitely try out the dark sweet bread! read more
