My friends and I visited The Parish for lunch after hearing good things about it. We ordered the Cajun chicken wings, fried okra, Parish Grilled Cheese, Classic BLT, French fries, a Firework cocktail, and beers. Overall, the food and drinks were good, and the restaurant itself was clean with a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, what should have been a pleasant lunch ended on a very disappointing note. When it came time to pay, our group split the check. Together, we left an 18% tip for our server, which we felt was fair for the service we received. As we were leaving, the server stopped us near the entrance--in front of other guests--and asked if something had been wrong because she didn't understand why we had left such a "poor tip." It was an uncomfortable and embarrassing interaction. We politely explained that the total tip was 18% and even walked through the math with her so she could see how we had calculated it. Instead of simply accepting the explanation, she told us that if we wanted, she could call the manager because they "don't welcome people who don't tip well." At that point, I responded that the comment was extremely rude and that we would not be returning. We haven't been back since. It actually took me quite a while to write this review. On another occasion, I mentioned this experience to the bartender at a nearby bar after she had recommended The Parish to me. She told me the same owner operates both businesses and said she would pass the feedback along. I don't know whether that conversation ever reached the owner, but it encouraged me to finally share my experience publicly. It's unfortunate because the food, drinks, and atmosphere were enjoyable. However, no customer should be confronted at the door or made to feel embarrassed over what was, in fact, an 18% tip. The food was pretty good. We loved the gator bites and crab cake. The wings were good, come with sauce on the side. The drinks were also great and I loved that the menu had a lot of options. The restaurant is pretty small, but they were very accommodating of our larger party, which was much appreciated. Where it fell short was the service. There was a host and 2 waitresses and a bartender. The bartender was really the only one working. The waitresses and host were huddled together most of the night. To the point I got so thirsty from the lack of water on my table I had to go get a glass from the bar. Came up to this area to go to a haunted house, after the haunted house we wanted to have a nice dinner and some good drinks. We found the parish, and we're glad that we did. They were closing soon, so we had called while we were 20 mins away and asked them to take our order over the phone and have it ready for us so we didn't make the kitchen staff stay open past their time, and they actually accommodated this for us! That right there is tremendous service. We ordered wings, which were delicious. Very crispy and juicy. We got a side of Mac and cheese and the skirt steak over potatoes cooked medium. The ambiance of this restaurant is great. We sat outside on the second floor patio. You can sit along the edge of the patio overlooking a gorgeous view. We had such a nice time talking and looking out at the view of the mountains. We ordered the gator bites, cajun chicken wings, buffalo cauliflower, crab cake, and traditional gumbo. The food was pretty good. The buffalo cauliflower was my favorite. But the space and the view is hard to beat. read more

Tonight was our first time going to The Parish. At first the service at the bar kind of sucked. We waited a loooong time to be asked if we wanted drinks. And then after another long wait we were asked if we wanted to order food....only to not have our orders taken. We were about to leave but figured that the place was busy and why not give it a shot. Eventually we were able to order and holy crap you guys...the food was freaking amazing. The drinks were great. They gave us knives to go with our steaks but you didn't even need them. Everything we ordered exceeded our expectations. The place is beautiful. Totally worth the wait. The server that we had a awesome once we were able to get a table. We're definitely going back. We visited New Paltz for the first time from our home in Cambridge, MA, and were amazed by all the lovely independent restaurants and shops. We don't get New Orleans creole food in Cambridge, so we were eager to try The Parish, and we were not disappointed. It was very hard for us to find the place, since we're not familiar with the Water Street Market complex, but eventually we found it at the top of everything. It's a tiny cozy place inside, with several outdoor tables, overlooking the Shawangunk mountains. The service was quite friendly and helpful, and we chose the crab cake, the gumbo, and the mushroom etouffee with shrimp. The spice level was perfect for us: intensely flavorful without blowing our heads off. The food arrived promptly and it was all delicious, as were our local beer and cider. For dessert we had the Bananas Foster and the bread pudding, and both came with exceptionally terrific ice cream. The manager or owner asked us about our experience as we left, and we were pleased to tell him how much we had enjoyed our experience there. The Parish beckons you to sit outside in nice weather, because of the patio space and the fact that it's dog-friendly outside. On warmer days, it's comfortable inside. Get comfy, because sometimes it takes a while for your cocktails to get to your table, but they're well made and worth it. We started last night with a couple of appetizers, their Parish wings and a daily special, fried cauliflower. The wings are uniquely spiced - if The Parish doesn't already participate in the annual Wing Wars competitions, I think they ought to, I think these are winners. This was followed by the buttermilk fried chicken. It's made the way my mom had always tried to make it, but hers never came out this good. The chicken was delicious, but the batter is heavy. I was not a fan of the collards, I thought they could have had more flavor. The hush puppies were super-moist and even better when dipped in the spicy mayo. The name that beckons New Orleanians visiting New Paltz... of course we had to go! The inside is extremely tiny, dark and inviting, but they had us at the outdoor patio. A storm was coming and we didn't care because the night was gorgeous and you don't get no mountain views in New Orleans! A really nice hostess warned us that a storm was coming and there was no room inside, so we knew we had to be quick and not linger, like typical New Orleanians, for drinking is one of our city's great pastimes. And trust me, anyone would be inclined to spend the better part of the evening on that patio, drinking numerous glasses of whatever wets your whistle. I really loved it! So, just drinks for us and I can't comment on the food. The menu did nothing for me - just like most Cajun/Creole restaurants in New Orleans (it's just not vegan-friendly cuisine), so The Parish has authenticity going for it in droves! Came here yesterday with my husband for dinner. We wanted to try something different. The food was really good. The service needs a lot of work on! So first we were going to walk in, and the lady who I assume was the manager told us "No, we're all booked right now until 8:30 with reservations". Then we walked away, went back to our car. I decided to call them and book a reservation. I don't know if it was the same lady who answered the phone, sounded like her, but who knows. The older lady goes "oh yeah we can book you for 8:00pm". Like we were just there at 7:30, and were told they were booked for another hour. All of a sudden there's a table...smh. Anyway, so we were seated with menus and water. Our waitress took forever to come back and take our orders, until I think she saw me roll my eyes. Honestly. She took our order. The wait for food wasn't bad. As soon as we got our food, the waitress never came back to ask if we wanted anything else, or even ask how the food was. When it was time to wrap up our dinner, the waitress was no where in sight. I needed a box to take my food to go. I saw her, I flagged her down nicely, I said "Excuse me Miss". I waved my hand for her to see. She literally just walked by our table. At this point my husband had it. We were being ignored and it was clear. They took forever to give us the check, take our money to cash us out. Numerous people including the manager walked past us. My husband took the clipboard and went up to the register. He said they're just standing there like they're all high and in outer space. The manager lady didn't even come by to ask us how the food was or anything. But she went to talk to the people behind us. Oh I forgot to mention the ambiance, but I'm sure people who are reading this get the picture. The ambiance is trash. I guess if you're not from there, you get ignored. Horrible, just horrible experience. Never again. I had much better experiences at other restaurants in town. If the manager of the restaurant is reading this, do better! I tried to order takeout tonight, and spoke with someone who said they would be only taking orders for the next half hour due to it being Mardis Gras, and that they would be getting busy. She said I could call back with my order, and I agreed to call back within 2 minutes. I tried to call back over 100 times during that half hour, and all I got was their answering machine that said to call back during normal business hours. It was very frustrating! My adult daughter and I went to The Parish for lunch after the craft fair on Labor Day. It is a lovely, quaint bar with great views and atmosphere. We were immediately greeted by Laura, the bartender. She was very helpful and attentive in giving us suggestions for drinks and appetizers. She made us the most delicious cocktails. We ordered the Sweet potato cakes, Cajun wings and Buffalo cauliflower. (I do know that everyone is short staffed, as I am a server/bartender as well, but our appetizers did take 45 minutes to come out.) The Cajun Wings were amazing. Suggestion...try them naked, they don't need sauce or dip they are that delicious. The blue cheese on the perfectly roasted cauliflower completely enhanced the dish. We enjoyed the Sweet potato cakes but they were lacking in texture and flavor. They needed a grated component, similar to a hash brown and there was no indication of jalapeño as described on the menu. They were tasty though. Overall, a great place. The burgers and po boys looked amazing. We were too full to order any, but will in the future. We would definitely return. read more

I give the wings a 10 as they were big, juicy and delicious and the sauce was served on the side so you could out just the right amount on each wing. Unfortunately the cajun food was not very good at all. The gumbo took 30 minutes to arrive and was absolutely tasteless which seemed impossible considering that it seemed to have all the ingredients. Perhaps they forgot all the spices? Likewise, the shrimp and grits was simply three shrimp smothered in garlic over grits w/o any seeming concern for the amount of butter on the dish. It was almost uneatable. Great location, but I think I'll stick with the non-cajun dishes as they completely missed the mark on the two cajun dishes. read more
