The former West Alley BBQ space in downtown Chandler was later taken over by a new concept called Back Alley BBQ in late 2025. Both restaurants offered super BBQ food but today's review is on my lunch experience at Back Alley BBQ. Country music played in the background as we sat at our nice table for four. High tops and communal tables were able up front by the mini stage but incoming patrons ended up sitting in our area toward the back. When I inquired about items that had no onions or garlic (SIBO diet) the kind, concerned server went back right away to ask the cook. I know that these two spices are IN everything having to do with BBQing but that didn't stop me from seeking out lunch here. Two sides-Roasted Poblano Coleslaw $4 and Beef tallow fries $4 is what was suggested. In spite of the absence of meat I had a delicious lunch! The coleslaw was tender yet the cabbage was crisp and the fries were cooked well and were fresh, fresh! I like the taste, when salt melts on the potatoes when they are hot! Came here for a family for my brother in laws birthday and dinner was delicious! We got a little bit of everything and it was all great! Visited on a Sunday afternoon and sat outside. It was pretty slow Sunday, which I actually didn't mind. They had fans with water misters running, which was a nice touch and made the patio much more comfortable in the Arizona heat. Our waitress was super friendly, attentive, and did a great job throughout the meal. Our beers took a little longer than expected because the keg had run out, but she kept us updated and made up for the delay with her great service. One of the highlights was the family combo pricing. We ordered the 4-meat combo for $29 so we could sample a little bit of everything. The turkey was easily the star of the meal!! juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The pulled pork was finger-licking good and reminded me of Mexican carnitas so much that I almost asked for a tortilla! The brisket was a little dry but still decent. The jalapeño sausage, however, tasted a bit old and wasn't my favorite. For sides, we tried the poblano pepper coleslaw and mac and cheese. Both were okay but could have used a bit more flavor. The cornbread also seemed a little dry and tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. We also ordered the Scorpion Smoked Wings. Despite the name, they weren't spicy at all, at least not for my taste buds. The atmosphere was relaxed with country music playing, creating a laidback BBQ vibe. The cold beer, friendly service, and affordable prices definitely added to the experience. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. The service, pricing, and a couple of standout meats make it worth a visit, but there are other BBQ spots around the Valley that I personally prefer. Came by on a Tuesday evening around 7pm. Not too busy as there were only a few other patrons. Open air seating options were nice. Straightforward menu. Ordered brisket, pulled pork, jalapeño cheddar sausages, pork sandwich, with sides of Mac and cheese, potato salad, beef tallow fries, creamed elote, and cornbread. Food came out somewhat quickly, however, a lot of it was pretty dry. The brisket was the only "tender" protein. Sides were decent, except for the cornbread. The cornbread was so dry, we couldn't even finish it. Overall, an okay meal if you just needed a quick BBQ fix. Our waitress was great and attentive throughout our meal. Nothing extravagant about this place, waitress was super nice and attentive. I got the brisket sandwich and it was alright. In my opinion if you have to drench the sandwich in the spicy sauce the meat isn't very seasoned and good on its own. The biggest complaint is the side Mac. For a bbq place I thought the Mac n cheese was gonna be so complimentary to the brisket but boy was I wrong. It was a plate of plain Mac, no cheese, no flavor, plain ale dente noodles. Okay wow wow wow! This California girl loves visiting Chandler. The people and the positive vibe... and the BBQ at Back Alley Bbq wafting into our hotel room. Last night we had some bbq here for dinner. We came hungry and tired having driven 5.5 hours from San Diego! Hannah the bartender had her ginormous Rice Krispie treat ready for my husband! lol and we ordered succulent bbq brisket sandwich and I ordered the tender flavorful pulled pork. We ordered some yummy sides of creamed corn ( never see that on the menu in San Diego ) Yowza!!! Beyond incredible! And the baked beans were so Smokey and delicious! Also had a piece of cornbread with honey butter that knocked our socks ( or flip flops) off! The food was great!! Our server was sweet Julia with an upbeat attitude, like all the staff!!! Seriously the entire staff makes you feel welcome and seen in a world where people have disconnected. Amazing personal customer service, they remember faces! Gentle breeze on our back and the dude smoking some brisket in the back, bringing in pounds of smoked hearty deliciousness through the back door from the alley. Bravo! This place is my new favorite BBQ stop. My friend and I stopped in here last Saturday just out of the blue. All the staff was super friendly. We were able to sit in the patio that had nice tables with umbrellas. Inside was clean and carried a nice vibe. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with the potato salad. It was so good. The bun was super soft and did not get soggy. Pork was moist and tender. Potato salad was very flavorful. I ordered a brisket sandwich to go for my husband. He said it was the best sandwich he has had in a long time. We will be back!!!! The only down fall is if you sit on the patio the bees come. One stung me on my butt I will still sit out there again. I used to LOVE this place when the previous owners had it. The brisket used to be melt-in-your-mouth amazing, the atmosphere was fun, there was dancing, live music, and it actually had personality. The new owners kept the same look but somehow managed to remove everything people actually loved about it. The brisket was tough, dry, and honestly barely edible. I spent a ton of money expecting the same quality and left wondering how this place is still calling itself barbecue. And why remove the stage and dancing area?! That was half the reason people went there. Now it just feels like every other generic white-owned country bar in Chandler with overpriced food and zero soul. Slow service and it was t even busy. We were recently enjoying all good things in downtown Chandler and headed our way to what we thought would be West Alley BBQ & Smokehouse (WABS), one of our Valley's top 10 fave 'cue joints. It didn't happen! We discovered Back Alley BBQ instead. With little to no interior changes other than stage location, some colors, furnishings, signage and 'brand new' smoking pits, the space is about the same - not so is the cookin'. What we found not to be the same was the BBQ offerings. WABS was Tennessee-style BBQ and Smoking style, but West Alley is modern-style, smoke-fused, Southwestern, Texas-style. Their one-page menu actually offers a considerable amount of selection. From Smoked Brisket, Turkey Breast, Pulled Pork, Sausage, Sandwiches, Sausages, Bowls; lotsa Sides, potato salad, coleslaw, mac n cheese; cornbread and beans. From the bar end they offer Cocktails, Draught and bottled beers, and apparently kick up some Live music too. I decided on the Brisket Sandwich pretty well prepped decently smoked, tender and mildly seasoned with a not overwhelmingly delish Chipotle aioli, along with nice pickled red onions, a cheese sauce on plain toasted bun, sided with pretty darn good, rootin' tootin' Cowboy Beans. After admiring what Shaun O'Neale and Ken Davis did to the place, we went on to try out the new bbq digs. We started with a couple of well-prepared Prickly Pear Palomas, and I settled for a 22oz Modelo Draught, nice and cold! We all shared a dry overly sugary tasting Sweet Cornbread that missed fluffiness and texture. My Wife and Sis opted for the Pulled Pork Sandwich, which was very moist and tasty, but lackluster in smoke or seasoning, sided with a pretty good potato salad. One can tell they recently opened... first Yelp only has 36 reviews, yet 241 on Google - positive ones too, but my disappointment ended up not so much with the food, but the service needs some help -servers need more product training, company knowledge, menu item details and attention to table patrons. First time in since the change from West Alley BBQ. Saturday afternoon that was pretty quiet.we were there for an Early dinner and World Cup viewing. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We ordered Sausage, wings, potato salad and cornbread. Everything was delicious, the smoked wings were best I've had in a while. Cornbread brought up the rear, a little hard but still eat it all. Went to Back Alley BBQ for lunch and we were very happy with the food and service. I ordered the Brisket Sandwich, first time I've ever had cheese or onions on brisket, but it worked well, my only critique is that the toppings took away from the true taste of the brisket itself. The meat was very tender with a good but not overpowering smoke taste. My co-worker ordered a 1/4 lb. each of the pork, brisket, and sausage. He said all the meats were very good and I noticed a nice smoke ring on them. Overall they clearly know how to smoke meat and I look forward to trying more. read more

Went for dinner around 6pm on a Friday night. Was pretty empty inside. You order at the counter, cafeteria style. We ordered the 4 meat platter and chose brisket, pulled pork, cheddar jalapeño sausage, and st louis style ribs. For sides, we got mac & cheese and bacon potato salad. They also give you a piece of corn bread. They weighed every item to make sure we were given no more meat than we were supposed to have (this process took an awkwardly long amount of time). Once we got our plate, we had to tell the cashier every item we chose (on the tray sitting in front of him). We paid and found a table outside. The brisket was good, very tender. Although it got cold very quickly (likely due to the slow service at the counter). After trying this, we were pleasantly surprised and excited. The pulled pork was underwhelming. The ribs were had a flavor we didn't love, but they were fine overall. The sausage was decent but nothing special. As for the sides, the mac & cheese has a kick to it. Which was not advertised anywhere so I was disappointed by this. The potato salad was their second best item, behind the brisket. The corn bread was free, thank god. I would have been disappointed had we paid for it. The restaurant ambiance itself is great. They also had live music being set up as we left. Our first experience couple of months ago was wonderful!!! Last night, we went again with some family members from out of town and it was horrific! The food was bad, no other way to put it. This was an amazing experience! We were in the area taking pictures and the smell is what led to me looking up what was around. I can say I made the right choice stopping in. We went in on a Sunday shortly after opening. They have plenty of parking in the back as it's right next to a parking garage. We walked in and were immediately greeted with a warm welcome. The employees were all super nice and helpful. They have a pretty straight forward menu. We got the 4 meat sampler and a half rack of ribs to share. All the food was amazing. The ribs were full of flavor, the brisket was perfectly cooked with good char and still juicy, pulled pork was amazing and the jalapeño sausage was amazing with the good BBQ sauce. Their spicy and regular BBQ sauces are also amazing. We could not decide which ones we liked best. The smoked turkey was a bit dry but good flavor. The cornbread was amazing, and the Mack and cheese and cole slaw were also a hit and all the fixings paired well with the meats. We also got a hot honey cheesecake and enjoyed it later that night and it was to die for! The restaurant has plenty of seating with a nice patio in the back next to their smokers! My wife and I were visiting our son and his family in Fairview a couple weekends ago. Every time we come to Nashville we insist on trying out a new barbq place. Nashville is known for good barbq. Over the past couple of years we have visited several places. One Saturday night I didn't want to drive back into Nashville, so I looked for someplace closer. I found a cute little town called Chandler with Back Alley BBQ. WOW!! This was quite a find. The place was very clean and well managed. The food was very fresh and smokey. I enjoyed the ribs, burnt ends and coleslaw. The cheese grits were unbelievable and save room for the banana pudding. My wife loved the brisket and green beans. I wish we had something like this in Denver. I look forward to seeing my granddaughters again and a visit to Back Alley BBQ. Great food and worth a visit. read more
